Chapter 2: This Distance (Moments of light)
Although he woke up to a throbbing pain in his skull, Frank felt comfortable and warm. Opening his eyes he found out why. His head was positioned on Gerard’s soft chest that was rising and falling in a steady rhythm.
The singer was obviously asleep and his left arm was wrapped around the smaller man in a possessive gesture.
Being so close to the other man made Frank’s heart beat faster with excitement and happiness. They hadn’t been so close in a long time – at least it had felt like an eternity to him – and the guitarist wished this moment could last forever. But he didn’t have any hope for that to happen.
One look around showed him that they were in Gerard’s room, the small lamp on the nightstand filled it with a soft, warm light.
Frank didn’t dare to move, almost in fear it was all just a dream and touching it would wake him up. So he just lay there for some minutes and enjoyed the feeling of the warmth the singer radiated.
He knew he couldn’t stay in this position. When Gerard woke up, he’d get angry. He hated it when Frank came too close while sleeping. The singer always kept a fair distance from the other. In public this served to prevent people from finding out about their affair. In private it served to demonstrate Gerard’s superiority.
The taller man was always careful to not let any weakness show so that Frank wouldn’t lose his respect and fear of him.
So the guitarist sighed and tried to move away from his band mate without waking him up. At first he thought he had been successful since the singer didn’t stir. This illusion dissolved the moment Gerard asked in a harsh voice, “You’re heavy, so could you please get off me?”
So he hadn’t been sleeping after all. Like so often before, he’d just observed Frank’s actions. This habit of the singer made it quite difficult for the smaller man to relax. He was always at risk of revealing his true emotions and that simply wasn’t an option. Once again the whole situation frustrated him. Thus he couldn’t hold back from letting the truth slip out.
“It was YOU, who brought me here and draped us like that! So it’s your…”
“Enough! Get off!”
Being shut up like a child bugged Frank, especially when he was right. Before he could think about it, he snapped, “But it was…”
He stopped dead when he saw Gerard’s hand flying towards his face. Frank shut his eyes tightly waiting for the impact, not sure if he feared or anticipated it. But it never happened. After two seconds the guitarist cracked an eye open to see that the slender hand had stopped an inch from his pale face.
Now the taller man moved his hand away from the other’s face and pointed to the guitarist’s left.
“Get off the bed!” Gerard’s voice was dangerously low, the sound of it made a shiver go down Frank’s spine. He was a bit scared but mostly excited.
On the one hand he loved it when Gerard took control, he indeed needed it. On the other hand he didn’t want to get away from the other man.
Frank took a last glance at Gerard’s stubborn expression before backing away.
“You can choose where you wanna sleep, either on the floor or in your room”, the singer’s voice sounded calm and reasonable now.
The smaller man was angry about himself. He knew this was his own fault. He just shouldn’t have answered back. Slowly Frank took his place on the floor. The carpet he was about to lie on didn’t make it any more comfortable since it was rather raw and scratchy. He had the strong feeling that he wouldn’t get much sleep like this, but there was no way in hell to make him leave Gerard’s room.
He simply wasn’t able to sleep on his own anymore. The guitarist needed Gerard to be around him, the sound of him breathing was enough to calm his nerves, even though he couldn’t be really close to the other man.
While trying to find the position that would leave him least sore in the morning, Frank heard the singer get up and leave the room. Since following the taller man when he was already in a bad mood wasn’t a good idea, the guitarist stayed put. He waited patiently and closed his eyes in an attempt to suppress the waves of pain still flooding his head.
Being lost in his own world at the moment, the smaller man didn’t hear the steps coming closer. Suddenly he felt a hand softly brush the hair out of his face. His first reflex would have been to shy away from the unexpected touch but he had learned to resist such urges. So now the guitarist could enjoy the feeling of a soft almost loving caress.
Frank had learned quickly to concentrate on those caressing touches that seemed to happen unintentionally almost accidentally.
“Does your head still hurt?” Gerard still sounded rational. Frank had to listen very carefully to catch the trace of worry in his voice.
“Only a bit”, he lied.
The taller man helped him to sit up a bit and handed him a glass of water and an aspirin. The smaller man took it and compliantly swallowed the pill with some water.
Taking the glass and putting it on the nightstand the singer said, “I didn’t want to hurt you.”
And that was it. There was nothing else to come. No apology. But Frank hadn’t expected one anyway. In their kind of relationship everything Gerard did was right. And where there was no mistake there was no reason to say sorry.
Frank hadn’t looked at the other man since he’d re-entered the room. His eyes had been trained down but now he felt confident enough to meet Gerard’s eyes. The singer’s expression stayed completely bank when he said, “Don’t do something like that ever again!”
The guitarist knew what Gerard was referring to. His stupid actions had lead to the taller man throwing him against the wall. He answered earnestly, “I won’t.”
“Will you be good?”
“Yes, I will.”
Saying that, Frank looked up to the other man with his best version of the puppy eyes. But Gerard didn’t so much as look at him. He lay down on the side of the bed that was further away from his band mate, practically ignoring him. Just when Frank was about to resume his position on the floor, Gerard spoke without turning around to face him.
“You can lie on the bed. But stay away from me! I don’t wanna wake up with your limbs sprawled all over me and a sore back. Stay on your side of the bed!”
He sounded harsh, but Frank had tried to stop listening after the first few words. Of course that didn’t work as well as he’d wished it would. He’d gotten used to Gerard not wanting him too close, but still it hurt him deeply.
Frank was still trying to cope with the fact that Gerard actually didn’t love him, but in moments like this he got the feeling that he didn’t even care about him anymore. The smaller man tried desperately to convince himself that Gerard only used this distance as a means to show him who was in control.
Gerard had turned the light off. Now the guitarist lay on the bed in foetal position and was sulking inwardly because he felt lonely although he was a sharing a bed with the man of his dreams and nightmares.
Suddenly he felt the warmth of a perfect body behind him and a blanket was pulled over him. The long fingers of one hand slowly combed through his black hair while another warm hand softly patted his back.
“I don’t want you to catch a cold”, the singer said lazily. He pressed a warm kiss on Frank’s neck before turning away again.
The moment he lost the contact, it felt like a candle inside Frank’s heart had been blown out. Now he felt cold and empty inside. But the light had been there, this couldn’t be denied.
It was for these moments of light that Frank was holding on.
It took him a long time before he finally fell asleep.
