Chapter 3
Assholes. Goddamn assholes. Each one of them. They’d left him in charge of their clothes while he scanned the shoreline for the woman that had plagued him for the past year. So they could go swimming! He should’ve just come by himself. He’d known it when he asked the guys to come along.
With a grumble and a frown in place, he sat down amid the pile of clothing his friends had left behind and settled in for his watch ‘shift’ as he called it. The sun set and tourists left the beach, retreating to local diners and prime time TV. Still his friends cajoled and teased each other in the steadily dimming light. The moon rose, silver and pure, but not whole just yet. A few more days, he coached himself. A few more days and he would see her for sure. But he would stay until the wee hours of the night in search of her. In the distance his friends were yelling in excitement, someone had made a funny. As they trudged back up to his post, weary from their exertions, he could hear them quietly doubting his sanity.
“I don’t know, Mike, he seems pretty convinced she’s real.” He could hear Ray try to reason with his sibling.
“He probably just had a very vivid dream about a girl that he made up in his mind and thinks it’s real. It’s happened before.” Mikey tried to explain away his accusation. Gerard knew his family worried about him and knew they meant well. But he also knew for a FACT that he hadn’t imagined Taliyah. He could never have imagined what he’d felt for her that night.
“Cut him some slack, Mikey.” Frankie said.
“Why don’t you wait until after the full moon to find out? If she shows up, Gerard isn’t crazy. I don’t think he is regardless. But just wait and see.” Bob’s cool and calm demeanor floated soothingly to Gerard’s ears. Bob knew Gerard could hear him.
“Fine.” Mikey said sullenly. The guys appeared at the top of the bank and retrieved their clothes from Gerard. “When will you be home?” Mikey asked.
“Same as always.” Gerard said simply. Mikey nodded and the guys said their simple farewells as they walked off with Mikey.
He’d show them what was real. When Taliyah came, he would take her home and show her to Mikey and the guys to prove he wasn’t imagining things. But when would she appear? He looked up at the moon, as if looking for an answer.
“Soon.” He heard a whisper in his ear. He smiled to himself. Taliyah was coming. He just knew it.
The next morning dawned fair and bright. Wait; was he still at the shore? He opened his eyes lazily and took in his surroundings. Yep, there was sand beneath his butt and waves in front of him. He’d fallen asleep on the sand, sitting Indian style facing the sea.
Would she come tonight? He hoped so, but knew he had to get home before he was caught. Mikey was probably worried sick. At least he would be if he were awake. He got up and shook out his stiff legs. He walked home as quickly as his impeded muscles would allow and checked the calendar the moment he reached the computer stand. The calendar said two more days to the full moon. He smiled; he could hardly wait!
He spent the night at the beach again; this time he took a sleeping bag with him. He stayed awake as long as he could, carrying it home and stowing it under his bed when he came home at dawn. He showered quickly and grabbed a bite to eat. He took a nap in his bed and went back to the shore when he woke up. Though it was still daylight, he went just to feel at peace. He sat watching the waves and the people all day long, his anticipation growing by the second.
When sunset approached, he went back home and changed into some clothes that he liked and called his friends. He convinced them and Mikey to come with him to the beach one more time. They sat in a straight line facing the waves, not speaking, their eyes greedily devouring the landscape, searching for any trace of the girl. Sunset turned to night with the radiant, shimmering full moon. There was still no sign of the Gypsy girl. His friends started to grumble, but Gerard silenced them, wishing more and more by the passing second that he hadn’t brought them. They didn’t understand the magic of this place.
Close to midnight, the guys had fallen into a light snooze. Only Gerard remained at rapt attention, furiously searching for a clue, anything, to show she might be coming. He looked at Mikey, his head leaning over onto Ray’s shoulder. Movement in the corner of his eye caught his attention. He looked toward the waves to see the source and heard his breath catch, felt his heart still. Taliyah stood at the shoreline, watching the waves. Gerard’s heart thumped erratically as he shook his companions awake. They grumbled in protest but he silenced them by directing their heads toward where Taliyah stood. They took a collective breath and stared at her, at Gerard, and at her again.
“Stay here and stay quiet.” Gerard said as he slipped down the slope toward his long-awaited sweetheart. As he approached her silently, he appraised her. She hadn’t changed much over the year. She wore the same garments she had when they’d met last year, but that didn’t matter to him. She was here. She was really here.
“Taliyah?” he asked, placing his hand on her shoulder. She turned to see him and her eyes exploded in a rapturous light that made him want to never stop looking at her.
“Gerard?” she asked excitedly. “Gerard!” she threw her arms around his neck and he caught her around the waist and swung them round. “I never thought I’d see you again.” She admitted when he set her back on the ground, his hands never leaving her hips.
“I’d be crazy not to wait for you.” Gerard smiled at his private play on words. He knew his friends were shocked. Good.
“Oh Gerard…so many things have happened in this past year.” Taliyah hugged him tightly. He tipped her chin up to search her eyes.
“Please don’t tell me you’re married now.” He said quietly.
“Fortunately, I was too clever to be trapped into marriage.” Gerard laughed at her expression. He would never grow tired of her. He drew off his jacket and placed it on the sand behind her, aiding her in sitting down once again.
“What happened?” he was eager for the tale…and so many other things.
“I simply behaved like a child. You see; parents don’t marry their children if their children act foolish or irresponsible. So I did silly things like forgot to boil water or some other chore my mother would give me. It was rather easy.”
“I’m glad you’ve not been sold to an old man.” Gerard said, squeezing her tightly. “I would have to fight him for you.”
“Oh no, you mustn’t! Please Gerard, you must understand that my people are very old fashioned. I’m meant to marry a Gypsy man.”
“Then I’ll become a Gypsy.”
“It’s not that simple, Gerard. You must be born a Gypsy.”
“Then…run away with me.”
“I can’t do that and you know it.”
“Then I’ll run away with you!” Gerard said. “I have everything I’d need. I could follow you around the world and we could be together that way.”
“Gerard…” Taliyah’s voice had an edge to it. “You know how dangerous that would be for both of us, do you not?”
“I don’t care. I will fight to the death to be with you if I must-”
“Stop it! Just stop, Gerard!” Taliyah yelled. “What part of everything I’ve told you did you not understand?!”
“The impossible part.” Gerard said with a smile. “Taliyah, nothing is impossible if you fight for it. Do you want to be with me or not?”
“You know-”
“Yes or no, Taliyah.”
“Yes, I want to be with you. You know that. I just don’t want to put you in harm’s way. I don’t think you truly understand what could happen to us both if we’re discovered.”
“But you want to be with me.” Gerard affirmed.
“I…more than anything. But if something happened to you, I’d don’t think I would survive long.”
“Taliyah, part of being in a relationship is taking a risk. The risk is greater for us, but I’m willing to take that risk so I can be with you. Are you willing to risk your way of life for me?”
“I’ll risk anything you ask of me.” Taliyah answered, leaning in to kiss Gerard. Gerard’s arms tightened around her small frame, pulling her closer to him.
“Come home with me. You can tell me what to pack.” Gerard said as he broke the kiss. Taliyah smiled.
“You can introduce me to your friends.” She pointed to the cluster of men that were watching us. I laughed and we walked up the beach together, hand in hand.
“Taliyah, this is Ray, Bob, Frankie, and my brother Mikey.” Gerard rattled off the names of the herd of guys. “Guys, this is Taliyah. I told you she was real.”
