Chapter Three
***Four years prior to the present day, one week before the American Idol Season Eight Finale.***
“Are you excited? You’ll be handing your crown over in approximately one week!” David Archuleta cried happily as he sipped his drink. The twenty-six year old man who sat across from him just smiled lightly. Wearing the Idol crown had been a wonderful experience for him. He was doing very well, having put out his debut album and touring and now working on his sophomore album since winning Season Seven of American Idol approximately a year before.
“Yes, I’m happy, but I’m also sad. I’ve been the American Idol for an entire year and it’s hard to believe I’m about to give up my crowning to the new Idol,” David Cook replied, stirring his own drink with his straw. He watched the eighteen year old whose eyes were beaming with happiness and delight.
It had been almost a year since the two of them had come out to America that they were a couple and they were still going strong. However, lately, Cook had been getting some very disturbing messages in his mail, both email and snail mail and it rather unnerved him. He didn’t tell David about them because he didn’t want to worry the boy. The eighteen year old had enough on his shoulders, what with working on his own album, which was set to release the following month. He was also preparing to go on his first tour. The younger David had done some touring with Cook to promote some of the singles from his album and now he was going to be going on his own tour.
David smiled at Cook whole-heartedly for a moment and shook his head. He sipped his drink once more but did not say anything for the time being. He knew that Cook felt sad to be giving up the Idol crown, especially since he hadn’t even intended on auditioning for the show in the first place. He’d been at the auditions to support his brother but a producer had talked him into auditioning and look what had become of it. He’d ended up winning the competition with David coming in second. It was definitely a season to remember. Honestly, what had been the odds that the two finalists would both have the same first name? The year before there had been two Chris’ in the finals but David and Cook had them beat. There had been not one, not two, but three Davids in their top twelve and two of them had been a part of the finale. The thought of it made David chuckle as he sipped his drink yet again.
“Don’t worry, you’ll always be seen as an Idol,” David finally said, attempting to reassure his boyfriend of his status. “You’re the rock sound. America never stops loving that.” This comment caused Cook to laugh lightly as he smiled at the younger boy. David had always been full of a positive air. He’d never thought negatively about anything. Not even the first week of the top twelve when he had known off hand that he was going to screw up. But America hadn’t cared; they had voted him safe anyway. It was during that time that David Archuleta had been seen as the front-runner. He was the favorite to win back then. Both David had achieved something that for the other seasons, only one person had ever achieved if any. That was the fact that the two of them had gone all the way to the final without ever being in the bottom three. That was quite a feat.
“You always were encouraging. You even predicted that I would win, despite the fact that you obviously performed better on the night of the final performance,” Cook replied, finally taking a sip of his drink.
“Yeah, but America was completely in love with you by that time. I was done for by then. I knew that they responded better for you.” David looked down at his drink, furrowing his brow in thought. Cook put a comforting hand on top of the eighteen year olds.
“Hey, you’ve still made it big. To be honest, I was so sure that you were going to be the winner. I know there were a lot of disappointed people that you didn’t win,” Cook said. David just shook his head and stared back down at the table. “It’s true. You were seventeen, so adorable, and girls screamed for you everywhere that you went. David, face it, you’re a teen heartthrob.” David couldn’t help but to crack a smile at these words. “You’re my baby face Archie,” Cook finished. David frowned. “What?”
“You know I don’t like it when people refer to me as ‘Archie’. It sounds weird,” David replied shaking his head. Cook didn’t say anything but leaned forward and gently pressed his lips to David’s. The younger boy did not protest but shut his eyes and pressed his lips firmly back against Cook’s, sealing the kiss with passion.
Cook raised his right hand and placed it on the back of David’s head as the two of them continued to kiss, neither caring if anyone really saw them at all. It didn’t matter to Cook if someone saw them. The fact was, he loved David and nothing was going to change that, no matter what happened. David felt the same way but being only eighteen, he was going through that stage where the need of being with someone was very strong. So to him, a public display of affection wasn’t a big deal.
“Well, well, well,” said a voice from behind the two of them. David and Cook reluctantly broke apart and turned to see who had spoken. At the sight of Simon Cowell in the café, David flushed a bright red and looked down at the table. Cook smirked and shook his head.
“Don’t you have something better to do than breaking up people’s private affairs?” Cook remarked. David reached across the table and shoved him in the shoulder, not once glancing up from the table. “What?”
“Don’t be a smart ass,” David muttered and Cook broke out into hysterics. David’s head whipped up and he glanced first at Cook and then at Simon who had cocked an eyebrow in surprise. The American Idol judge had his arms crossed over his chest in that way he often did and he was looking at David with an expression that clearly showed how unexpected he had found the statement that had just fallen from David’s lips. “What’s so funny?” David asked, turning his attention back on Cook.
“You, saying smart ass,” Cook remarked, calming down slightly. “Those are a couple of words I never thought I would hear come out of your mouth David,” he went on to say when he’d recovered himself.
“Likewise,” Simon said. The British man was still looking at David in mock surprise.
“Don’t you have somewhere else to be right now?” Cook asked, glaring at Simon. “You’ve judged us enough. Go back to the two finalists for this season and leave us alone already.”
Simon unfolded his arms and turned a dark eye on Cook. “Someone hasn’t gotten laid recently,” he said simply. If there was ever there was a statement from anyone to make Cook shut-up, it was that one. Cook raised his eyebrows in surprised at Simon. David did the same too. He had been halfway to taking another sip of his drink and the glass was frozen halfway in the air as he looked up from the drink, his eyes wide with surprise. “I thought so,” Simon confirmed. Giving both Davids a smile he gave a short wave and walked out of the café.
Cook and David looked at each other, the surprise still eminent in both of their faces. Neither one of them had been expecting Simon to say something like that to them. What had gotten into him recently? Was something getting under the British man’s skin? Perhaps he was banging Paula. That wouldn’t be a surprise. Honestly, who hadn’t banged Paula these days? Other than the Idol contestants, that was of course.
“That was something I never thought I would ever hear come out of his mouth,” Cook finally said. David flushed an even deeper red than he already was. It was his turn to play with his drink, which he hadn’t bothered to sip. He had merely set it back down on the table and started stirring the straw around in it. “What’s wrong love?” Cook asked and David finally looked up at him, the red eminent in his flushed cheeks.
“He was the last person I would have liked to catch us kissing,” David remarked truthfully. “Honestly, I wouldn’t mind Randy or Ryan or the other finalists or even Paula, but certainly not Simon,” he added shaking his head.
“Don’t worry about it love. Simon’s probably just frustrated that he’s not getting any from Paula anymore.”
“David!” David cried, his face flushing even darker if that was possible.
“What?! It’s true!” Cook replied. He reached across the table and took David’s face in his hands. “Besides, it’s really none of his business what we do. He shouldn’t have barged in and interrupted. We’re not his problem anymore. He really should be concentrating on the finalists of season eight.” David managed a weak smile and glanced down at his watch.
“Oh my gosh!” he cried. “I’m late!” Cook gave him a curious look. “I’m sorry baby but I have to get to the studio. I’m due for a meeting.” Cook’s face fell and David was certain that the older man was actually going to pout but Cook held his face straight. “I’m sorry David, but I have to go to this meeting, it’s important.” David felt bad about leaving Cook in the middle of their date like this.
“I know, it’s just, I miss you when I can’t hold you or even just look into your eyes,” Cook said truthfully. David gave him a small smile as he grabbed his jacket and came around the table, taking Cook’s face in his hands and kissing him gently on the lips.
“I’ll miss you too baby. You are my everything David,” he said as he pulled away from the kiss. Cook smiled at him and pulled him back in for another kiss. The two of them kissed for another minute or two before David reluctantly broke them apart. “I have to go now. I’m already late.” Cook frowned but nodded his head.
“Drive safe love!” he called to David as the eighteen year old headed out of the café. David turned and looked back at him, giving him a smile and a wave. Cook sighed and looked at his drink. He hated being apart from David. It tore away at his insides. He just wanted to spend every waking moment with him. He loved the boy that much. He’d never felt so strongly about anyone before and to be honest, the thought of it slightly scared him but he pressed on with the relationship anyway.
After Archuleta had disappeared, David paid for their drinks and got up from the table. He didn’t see any reason to finish his own drink. He wasn’t really very thirsty anymore anyway so that didn’t really matter.
He smiled and waved to the man behind the counter as he headed out of the café, making his way for his car, which was parked no too far away from the door of the café. He never made it.
En route to the vehicle, David was surprised when someone covered his mouth from behind with a strip of thick black cloth. He struggled against the item, pulling at it with both hands. He was confused, why would someone attempt to attack him in broad daylight where everyone could see them? It didn’t make sense.
As he struggled with the garment that had been shoved into his mouth, trying to kick his legs back at his captor, David thought of the disturbing messages he had been receiving. All of them had warned him to stay away from Archuleta, each one more severe than the last. Though they bothered him, he pushed it away as a bunch of empty threats from an overly obsessed fan of Archuleta’s. Now, he was beginning to wonder if they weren’t empty threats after all. Had the person who had been writing him finally snapped and actually decided to attack him? If so, how did they know where to find him? Were they spying on Archuleta and himself? David shuddered at the thought of such a thing. He hadn’t felt like he was being watched and the eighteen year old had never mentioned feeling that way either so he really didn’t understand what was going on.
Whoever had a hold of him must have decided that they were tired of him trying to get away because the next thing David knew, something came down on the top of his head and he felt a searing pain stem from the spot where the thing had made contact with his head and spread down his body. And then, David Cook knew no more.

***Present day, Peet’s Coffee, four years later.***
“And the next thing I remember, I was waking up in a dingy looking room. I was lying on a cot. My hands were tied together and my feet were shackled. Someone had removed all my clothes and stashed them in a box that I could see sitting across the room. I know my stuff was in there because it was written plainly across the box that it contained my belongings,” Cook was saying now. With each passing word of the pass several minutes, David’s eyes had widened just a bit. He couldn’t believe that just moments after he had left for that meeting, his precious David had been attacked and confined in someone’s house.
“Did you ever find out anything about the attacker?” he asked him, placing a hand on Cook’s wrist. Cook turned and looked at him for a moment before staring down at the table in front of them.
“It was a girl. She was infatuated with you. She was the one who had been sending me all those disturbing messages. She said that she had gone to high school with you before you had auditioned for Idol. She claimed that you were hers and no one else was allowed to have you. All the while, she never once told me her name.” David looked away in thought for a moment, trying to see if he could put anyone to match with the attacker.
For several moments, David wracked his brain, trying to remember those people he had known before he had been on Idol. He had known too many to really pick out who the girl might be and ended up giving it up as a lost cause and just shook his head. “I’m sorry David, I can’t figure out who the girl might be. There are too many in my past that would fit the bill.”
Cook sighed and looked down at the table again. “That’s alright, I don’t blame you for not being able to come up with anything. I think we need to be prepared though.” David gave him and odd look and Cook went on. “There’s a very good chance that whoever she is, she will come after me. This is not over, I guarantee you,” he said shaking his head.
“What do you mean there’s a good chance she will come after you?” David asked him, cocking an eyebrow. It was clear to Cook that he didn’t understand the full situation and he didn’t expect him to. David was an adult now but that didn’t mean he understood every little thing that went on.
“I mean, she didn’t let me go of my own free will. I had to fight for my escape. It is likely she will come after me. I could charge her. I have the evidence to. She wouldn’t want that to happen.” He shook his head again, staring down at the table once more. It was a very heavy moment right then and David’s eyes went wide as he realized fully what this might mean. This girl, whoever she was, was capable of attempting to murder Cook. Now that Cook had escaped from her clutches, there was a definite possibility that she would try to have his life so that he could never rat her out for what she had done. David would be devastated if that happened.
“You can stay at my house for now,” he said finally. “None of the fans know where I live and I sent Emily away for some time. She won’t be back for a few days at least. I’ll talk to her before she returns if you’d like.” He hoped that Cook would agree, although he knew that he might think that with him would be the first place the girl would try to look. Even if she didn’t know where David lived, that did not put Cook in the clear. Whatever the matter, the two of them would figure out something and David would make sure that they would be prepared should she ever find them.
“I’m not sure that’s the best idea David. Your house is the first place she’ll attempt to track down,” Cook said, voicing exactly what David had just been thinking but David was ready with a reply.
“And if she does, we’ll be ready for her when she finds us,” he said in a determined and reassuring voice. Cook looked at him. “Trust me, have I ever been wrong to you?” he asked, knowing that Cook was not quite convinced. Finally, the older man sighed, putting his face into his hands.
“No, you’ve never been wrong David,” he said in a quiet voice.
“Exactly,” David told him. “We are going to make this work and before she knows it, she’ll be sorry she ever attempted to kidnap you.”
“All right, if you’re sure,” Cook said, finally agreeing to stay with David. David smiled.
“I’m sure and that’s the spirit,” he said, smiling widely at him. Cook smiled back but David could tell that it was a rather forced smile for the older man. However, he didn’t say anything about it. The last thing he needed was to start bickering about a stupid thing such as wearing a real smile. It just wasn’t something that was worth arguing over. Besides, he didn’t want the two of them to turn into Simon and Ryan. He laughed at the thought of it.
“What’s so funny?” Cook asked, giving David a quizzical look. David stopped laughing and just looked at him for a moment.
“Oh, it’s nothing. I was just thinking how I didn’t want the two of us to end up like Simon and Ryan. They are always bickering about stupid things,” he told him truthfully.
“And what would be that stupid thing to bicker about?” Cook asked.
“Just the fact that I know the smile you just pulled was forced,” David admitted. Cook just looked at him for a moment before smiling, this time for real.
“Okay, you caught me. I’m sorry, I’m just worried is all.”
“I understand and I don’t blame you David. You’ll be okay though, I promise.”
“I’m finding that hard to believe but maybe that’s because I still remember you as an eighteen year old. It’s hard for me to grasp the fact that you’re an adult now, a fully legal adult. It seems like I’ve missed so much of your life. I’m sorry David.” David put a hand on Cook’s shoulder.
“Don’t be sorry, it’s not your fault that you missed out on four years of my life. Blame that girl. She’s the one who should be sorry and we’ll make sure she is,” he said truthfully.
For the next few moments, Cook just stared at him. David stared right back, the two of them making the connection with their eyes that hadn’t been held for so long. It was obvious that they both still loved each other. Neither had stopped thinking about the other while the two of them were apart.
Than, something that had been waiting four years to happen again happened just then. Both David Archuleta and David Cook leaned forward and their lips met. Instantly, David’s arms found their way around Cook’s neck and Cook brought his hands up to the back of David’s head, running his hands up into the twenty-two year olds short cropped black hair. It seemed the boy hadn’t bothered to change his hairstyle since the last time Cook had seen him but that didn’t bother him at all. He took pleasure in being able to see David exactly the way he remembered him. Except right now, neither man was seeing the other as their eyes were closed.
The kiss was heated and passionate and neither one of them wanted to pull away from the other. If David had his way, he would have ordered Cook to take him right there in at the table in the middle of Peet’s Coffee but he held back. He knew how very uncomfortable it could be for both of them to have sex in public.
“Cook…” David moaned into Cook’s mouth as he continued to kiss him. Oh how he had longed to feel the older man’s lips on his again. It almost seemed too good to be true. He was tempted to pinch himself just to make sure that this wasn’t just a dream. He dreamed of being back in Cook’s arms so many times that it was possible to him that this was not a reality as he was hoping it would be.
“David…” Cook moaned right back and the sound of his voice made David tremble with anticipation. Reluctantly, he pulled away from Cook, his lips swollen from the passion of the kiss and the heat showing in his face. Cook gave him a strange look. “Why did you pull away? Do you not feel right kissing me now that you have Emily?” he asked. David gave him a small smile and shook his head.
“No,” he said. “That’s not it at all. I’m just itching to have more of you and I want to get you home before I start not too care about the public eye too much and have you take me right here on the table.” Cook smirked and David knew he was thinking about how much fun that would really be. He playfully swatted him. “Cook please,” he said. “I really don’t like making my private life public.” Cook laughed but pouted all the same.
“Fine. But we better get there fast because I’m ready to just rip those clothes right off of you and slam you down right here. You know how long we’ve both gone without each other. I don’t know if I can last much longer,” he reluctantly agreed, shaking his head and staring at David with eyes that were dark and full of lust and desire.
“I know how you feel. Now let’s get home before we lose it and I’m talking in more ways than one,” David replied. Cook nodded his head. A part of him found it so strange to hear David talking this way. The younger man had always been so shy about their lovemaking in the past. Then he remembered that David had probably grown up a lot in the four years the two of them had been apart from each other. He still felt bad for missing out on all that time he could have been spending happily with David. Who knew, had he not been abducted, the two of them might possibly be married by now.
Without another word, David got up from the table and Cook followed suit. David led the way out to the parking lot where the two cars, both alike sat together, next to each other as though they were together just like their owners were. David and Cook looked at each other and grinned, each getting into his own car and pulling out, Cook on David’s tail so that he could follow him to his house.
