The sound check had come and gone, the two bands had all sat backstage drinking and chatting for an hour before the venue filled to capacity, Slipknot had played a blinder of a set and now Hellbound were up on stage, soaking up the still boiling hot Californian summer sun as sweat ran off them all under the extra heat of the stage lights beaming down onto their be-instrumented bodies (Jess could already feel a sweat rash prickling her bare shoulder from her bass strap).
'God you guys are all fucking MENTAAAAAAAAAAAL!' Shouted Jade into the mic with mirth as 5,000 screaming fans all roared their heads off. She looked out over the crowd and just like at every other gig they had done since hitting the big time just three years ago she just couldn't believe this was her life, that they were screaming for her and her band. It was beyond a dream, especially for the little girl whose sole dream at four years old was 'to be happy'..............
She was born Jade Lucia DiMaggio in her mother’s native Sicily on January 22nd, 1974, a happy and healthy 8lb baby. And little did Juliette DiMaggio know as she cradled the tiny infant Jade in her arms that this baby would turn out to be one of the biggest, if not the biggest female rock star in the world. But before that could happen the pair would have quite a troubled path to tread.......... at the hands of Robert Pavey, Jade's biological father. Juliette should have sensed trouble in the air from day one. Her beloved father Carlo had shown nothing but contempt for Robert since meeting the wild Irishman who had captured his daughters heart, and usually Jules (as she preferred to be called) would take her father’s word over absolutely anything, but not this time. This time Carlo knew that he would have to sit back and watch his nineteen year old daughter make the worst mistake of her life, so only she could learn from it. What Carlo didn't know however is just how bad that mistake of Jules' would turn out to be.
What wasn't a mistake was the baby born from the union. Carlo adored Jade, doted on her and in the end longed to hear her gurgles and feel her soft baby skin when Juliette moved back to London with Robert after having Jade at 'home' (Carlo and Juliette's mother, New Jersey born Bernice Shay had separated some years before, with Bernice moving to the UK). Also, having his daughter and granddaughter so far from him under the care of a man he didn't trust made his nerves shake to their very core. Carlo was wise, and smelt the trouble two years before it began, and three years before it came to a head.
To say Robert was fond of the drink would have been an understatement. He drank like a fish whenever he wasn't working as a labourer on building sites across the south east of England, which did nothing for the family’s financial position. With Juliette trying to manage the balance of being a college student studying a diploma in historical art and a full time mother to Jade, things were tricky. Whenever she voiced her grievances to Robert he would wave them away, say 'everything will be fine, you'll see' and take himself off down to the pub to keep the local barfly's company. But literally just before Jade's second birthday things took a massive turn.
Juliette had discovered she was pregnant again, which was no surprise since both of them had been brought up staunchly Catholic, but what did surprise her was Robert's reaction. All of a sudden money was a worry, he could not have anyone or anything else cut into his drinking budget, so decided to take matters into his own hands by throwing his partner down a flight of stairs in a vain drunken hope she would miscarry his babies. An ultrasound revealed all was fine with the twins, and the pregnancy continued, as did Robert's violence. Not content with beating Juliette, he turned his aggression to little Jade, who ended up in hospital a grand total of 15 times because of her father's wicked ways even before she had turned three.
On her third birthday she received many presents from her beloved grandfather, uncles and aunties, and a broken rib from her father kicking her out of his way as she gleefully opened her gifts. To say he was psychotic would be putting it very mildly, and by now Juliette realized she and her three children were living with a mad man, a complete lunatic. Heavy drinking and many a blow to his head from subsequent drunken fist fights had changed him beyond recognition, from a monster to the beast baring the mark 666 himself.
The day it all came to a head was quite possibly the worst Juliette could remember, the day she realized what danger she had been putting herself, Jade, and twin babies Rachel and Marco in. With the six month old twins sleeping soundly upstairs Jade remembered playing outside in their small garden, wondering how her little sister and brother could possibly sleep through all the noise her mummy and daddy were making in the kitchen. Wheeling happily up and down on her trike, used to the arguments her young ears heard on a daily basis it was only when she heard her mother’s blood curdling scream that she went to the back door to investigate, and saw her mother lying in a pool of blood as her father kicked her over and over in the stomach. Letting a horrified, frightened scream escape her tiny lips Jade turned and ran, her sharp-for-a-three-year-old mind remembering her mother telling her 'Mrs Collins will always help you if you need her, remember that sweetie' in reference to their next door neighbour. So off Jade ran, her father soon coming after her. After scrambling through a small hole in the hedgerow into Mrs Collins garden Jade felt relief to see the middle aged lady coming towards the French windows, only then to feel her father's hands around her waist.
'It's okay Jean, she's just trying to escape from going in the bath!' her father had said in a perfectly normal, amused tone as Mrs Collins appeared at the open window. He scooped Jade up and blew a raspberry on her tummy, giving her a little tickle for appearances sake; it was the only time Jade ever remembered him giving her affection.
'Okay Robert, now you be a good girl for dad Jade!' said Mrs Collins as Jade writhed and screamed, still seeing her mother a blood sodden mess on the kitchen floor in her mind’s eye.
'Keep still you little shit!' Robert hissed into her ear as he let himself out of the gate and carried Jade back into their garden, and then into the house. She screamed for her mother who was just about conscious after being stabbed seven times in the stomach, and the next thing she knew her tiny body was being hurtled through the air, hitting the adjoining lounge wall with a sickening crunch as her collarbone and ankle both broke.
Barely able to move and too terrified to open her eyes the next thing she felt was her father’s hands around her throat, slowly strangling breath from her body as he spat and snarled at her. The fear was so great Jade wet herself, only further angering him and spurring him to hurt her further, which he did when he retracted the knife from his pocket and lunged at her once more. Only this time he was stopped, behind him stood the large Sicilian figures of Jamie and Joseph, her uncle’s who with her last few breaths her mother had managed to telephone from her place in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor. Luck would have it that they were just minutes away visiting Bernice.
‘il relativo angelo molto piccolo giusto, smusserà la ferita voi più’ said her uncle Jamie as he carefully lifted Jade into his huge muscular arms. Loosely translated from the Italian dialect he used he had told his precious niece ‘its okay tiny angel, he can’t hurt you any more’. Being a bilingual child Jade just about understood what he had said to her, but the tone he used comforted her even more. He carried her upstairs and put her down on her bed, explaining he had to go and help her mummy and not to worry, her uncle Joseph wouldn’t let her daddy get to her again. She never knew what happened to Robert until a long time after that day, all she remembered was an ambulance coming to fetch her mother, and Joseph and Jamie removing her and her siblings from the house to go and stay with grandma.
A year of freedom passed, and her mother finished her college diploma to begin working at the front desk at a local art gallery while she also studied her BA in historical and modern art, and the children had adjusted fine to life without a father; until one came along that is. Steven Barry was a surgeon who had chosen to take a year away from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Centre position he held and work under one of the most skilled cardiologists in the world who resided in London. After deciding to take a trip around the same gallery Juliette worked at after a long night shift the pair met, and fell in love. This time, Carlo DiMaggio gave his full seal of approval. Any man willing to take on three small children along with the woman he loved without question was a good man in his eyes. What Jade’s eyes saw when she first met him were another matter, something still laughed and joked about to that day in the family. ‘Mommy! The man from the telly is here!’ she has announced upon Steven entering the living room of their home, for he bore an uncanny resemblance to the actor Morgan Freeman. Jade still didn’t know if it was his skilled acting ability or the resemblance to her dear dad that made her such a fan of the Hollywood heavyweight.
And from that moment on, he was her dad, the only man ever to love and support her, encourage every little thing she ever showed interest in, pick her up when she fell and never, ever judge her. The fans approval was one thing, but as she looked down from the stage into the wings to see him standing there, pride bursting from his smile as she sang, Jade knew he was the person she did it all for other than herself.
‘I love you baby’ he mouthed up at her over the thunder of Jo’s guitar.
‘I love you too daddy’ she mouthed back, before her mouth went back to the mic and she bellowed out a loud roar, looking back to see him looking quietly amused as always. It always astounded him that such a fierce noise came out of his little girl, but then with the decibels she used to reach when having a screaming tantrum as a child it didn’t surprise him! Another thing that didn’t surprise him was that from the other side of the stage just behind the PA system another set of brown eyes watched her.
‘Oh I know what that look is all about boy’ thought Steven as he watched Jim watching Jade.
