"You came on a good day," Kelly informed Carrie as they walked into the lab.
"Why's that?"
Kelly nodded to the television in the front of the class, "Movie day."
"What kind of movie do you watch in Chemistry?"
Kelly shrugged as they sat at her station in the back of the class.
"Do you always sit in the back?" Carrie asked.
"Why? Do you have trouble seeing? Cause I'm sure someone would swap with us if you need," Kelly replied, standing again. "Hey Claire," she called out to a brunette sitting at one of the front stations.
"Kelly," Carrie blushed as everybody turned to them. She tugged on the native Texan's arm, trying to get her to sit back down. "I can see just fine."
"Oh," she replied, turning back to the brunette who was looking at her questioningly. "I like your shirt," she smiled.
"Like your pants," Claire smiled back nodding towards her pajama bottoms, making Kelly laugh.
"Sorry," Kelly apologized to Carrie, sitting back down.
"Are you always like this?" Carrie asked curiously.
"Like what?" Kelly asked, moving her feet back and forth as they dangled several inches above the ground.
"All burners on, all the time."
Kelly shrugged, "I don't know, but God I'm starving. I didn't have time to eat this morning, and let me tell you, Kelly's belly is about to revolt."
Carrie laughed as the teacher walked into the lab, holding a dvd in his hand.
"Today, we will be watching Superstar," the teacher announced.
Kelly grinned, "You just gotta love the public education system."

"What happens next?" Carrie asked as they walked out of the class. Being the classes were only 57 minutes long, they hadn't been able to watch the entire movie.
"You've never seen that before?" Kelly asked, looking at her as if she were an alien.
"No," she shook her head. "My mom says movies like that have the same effect on your brain as smoking a joint."
Kelly nodded, trying not to laugh, "Maybe I am gonna corrupt you after all."
Carrie raised an eyebrow, but Kelly just shook her head as they reached her next class.
"Ok, so this is your fifth hour class," Kelly explained. "Miss Sandy is real nice, so don't worry."
Carrie nodded.
"Now we have lunch after this, and the cafeteria is right there," Kelly pointed to a couple of doors down the hall. "I'll probably be done before you because Mr. Lonnie is a rather...hungry man, and likes to get there first."
Carrie giggled.
"So, just walk into there and follow the line. Do you have your i.d. yet?"
Carrie nodded, going to reach into her back pocket, but Kelly stopped her.
"That's fine, just give to the cafeteria manager, and she'll swipe it for you. That's how we pay," she explained. "I'll be in there, so if you have any problems just yell, ok?"
"Um, where...where do I sit?" Carrie asked.
"With us," Kelly replied. "I mean, unless you find some hot guy, then by all means go ahead, I won't be hurt in the least."
Carrie smiled.
"So I'll see you in a bit. Have fun," Kelly nodded before turning and walking away.

Carrie looked around the giant cafeteria nervously, feeling as if all eyes were on here. She looked over all the unfamiliar faces, feeling her stomach knot up when she didn't see her perky guide. She then looked to find two different lines formed on either side room. She gulped. Kelly had just said get in line. She never said which one.
Carrie felt as if she were gonna be sick. She turned on her heel, suddenly not seeing the need for lunch, running straight into someone.
"Oh God, I'm so sorry," she apologized before hearing a familiar laugh.
"Hey," Kelly smiled. "What's wrong? The macaroni's not that bad. I mean, sure it bounces, but none of us have died from it yet."
Carrie laughed, relieved, "Nothing. I just didn't see you, and I kind of got nervous."
"There's no need to be nervous," Kelly said, placing a hand on her arm and guiding her to the line on the right side of the room. "Look, Ashley is already sitting over there," she pointed out. "She doesn't bite. I promise. I just had to make a quick pee run."
Carrie nodded, suddenly ashamed of her reaction. "But you didn't say which line," she reminded, trying to defend her behavior.
"This is the line for the upperclassmen," Kelly explained. "But don't worry, it's not like you'll get detention for going into the wrong line or something."
"Oh," Carrie blushed.
"It's fine," Kelly assured her with a smile as they made it to the front of the line. She pulled out her i.d., handing it to the lady waiting. "Looks good," she grinned as the worker scanned it onto the computer.
"You say that everyday," the lady smiled.
"I call 'em like I see 'em," Kelly replied, grabbing her tray and waiting as Carrie did the same. "You see the perk of being a senior is that we get more food," she explained, handing her tray to the worker and pointing to what she wanted. "Thank you."
"How's that a good thing?" Carrie asked, eyeing the food carefully. She wouldn't be surprised if it suddenly came alive.
"When you find something you like, you'll see," Kelly replied, grabbing a carton of chocolate milk. She looked over her shoulder to make sure Carrie was following as she weaved in and out of the tables.
"Kelly!" she heard a name call out.
The Texan sighed, stopping with Carrie beside her as she turned to Stacey's table, "Hey y'all. Good day?"
"Yea," Stacey nodded. "Why don't you and your new friend sit with us?"
Kelly didn't like the way that Stacey smiled at Carrie. She felt the blonde shrink back behind her.
"Sorry, but I already promised Ash and them I'd sit with them," she replied. "But y'all are welcome to join us."
Stacey looked over to the table where Kelly's friends were sitting and turned back with a laugh, "I think we'll stay here."
"Yea," Kelly nodded before turning to walk away. "She likes you," she mumbled to Carrie.
"She looked like she wanted to eat me," Carrie frowned.
Kelly laughed, "Please, that girl? Eat? Sure..."
Carrie smiled, following close behind her.
"She was looking at you like that because she thinks you'd be a perfect addition to her little entourage," Kelly explained.
"Oh," Carrie stopped, looking back over her shoulder.
Kelly watched her carefully, "Look, I know you're new, and you have no reason to listen to anything I say because you don't know me. The truth is, if you really want to make your life easy, you'd go sit with her. She'll set you up with some football player boyfriends, and your name will be on the tips of everybody's tongue."
"And if I stay with you?"
"If you stay with me," Kelly smiled. "You maintain the ability to think for yourself."
Carrie nodded as Kelly walked away, joining her friends. Carrie looked back over her shoulder at the preppy red-head who was surrounded by people laughing at whatever it was she had said.

Kelly smiled as Carrie set her tray down next to her, sitting down, "Good choice."
"I think so," Carrie nodded, returning the smile.
"Y'all this is Carrie," Kelly said, addressing the others at the table. "Carrie, this is Mary, and Lyndsey, and you already know Ashley."
"Hey," Carrie smiled nervously.
"So where're you from?" Mary asked.
"Um, Oklahoma," she replied.
"Why'd you move here?" Lyndsey asked.
"My dad got a promotion," she explained, keeping her eyes down at her food.
"What--"
"Guys," Kelly said, cutting them off. "Let her breathe. Give her some adjustment time. We don't want to scare her away on her first day."
"I'm surprised she hasn't run out of here screaming yet," Ashley replied. "Having to follow you around all day and everything."
"Shut up," Kelly laughed, elbowing her. She turned to Carrie, "This is why having a lot of food is a good thing. Watch this." She looked back at the rest of them. "Macaroni?" she offered.
"Brownie!"
"Chicken nuggets!"
"Bread!"
"Milk!"
Carrie watched as the table was a blur of food with people reaching over each other. Kelly sat back down, her plate stacked with brownies and nothing else.
"When you find something you like," Kelly smiled. "You run with it."
"Is it healthy for you to be eating all that sugar if you didn't eat breakfast?" Carrie asked curiously.
All the eyes at the table turned to her.
"Healthy?" Kelly asked, holding up one hand. "Brownie?" she held up the other, pretending to weigh the two out. "Yep, definitely brownie."
A collective laugh was heard around the table, and Carrie smiled as she turned to her own lunch.

"You finished?" Kelly asked Carrie as everybody stood up to throw their stuff away.
"Um, yea," she nodded, standing as well. "Where do we go next?"
"Well, we go dump this stuff, then we go outside in the quad and just hang out," Kelly replied, guiding her to the trash cans.
After throwing their stuff away and adding their trays to the stack of dirty dishes, they walked to the back of the cafeteria where everybody's booksacks were piled together.
Carrie laughed as Kelly practically dove underneath the pile to find hers. She picked up her own which was on top.
"How'd it manage to get down there?" Mary asked Kelly. "You were here nearly last."
"Mystery of the world, my friend," Kelly smiled, standing back up. A loud tearing sound caused her to groan a second before the sound of several books hitting the floor echoed throughout the nearly empty cafeteria. "Damn it," she sighed, bending down to gather the books in her arms. "I got to go fix this. I'll see you guys later."
The rest of the group nodded, starting to walk away. Carrie stood there, frozen.
Kelly noticed her looking at her pleadingly, "You can come with me if you like."
Carrie nodded, following close behind as the Texan made her way down the hall in the opposite direction of the rest of her friends.
"You know, they don't bite," Kelly reminded.
"I know," Carrie replied softly.
"But I get it," Kelly nodded. "I've been new before. Several times actually. Don't worry. It gets easier."
"I hope so," Carrie mumbled as they reached Kelly's locker. "So, how are you gonna fix that?"
"There's nothing a needle and thread and a bit of duck tape can't fix," Kelly said, pulling the supplies out of the locker and sitting down on the floor, pulling her empty bookbag onto her lap.
Carrie stood there, watching as Kelly set to work, sewing up her bag by hand.
"Where'd you learn to sew?"
Kelly looked up at her with a grin, "When most of the stuff you have is hand-me-downs and tend to fall apart quite often, you learn real quick."
Carrie smiled back as Kelly returned her attention to the task at hand.
"Excuse me! Miss!" a deep voice called from down the hall. "You aren't supposed to be in here! Lunch is outside! The halls are off limits!"
Carrie's eyes grew wide as she watched a rather large man hurrying towards her.
"I-I'm s-sorry," Carrie replied shakily.
Kelly laughed, waving her hand, getting his attention.
"Kelly?" he asked. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't see you there. Everything ok?"
"Yes sir, my bag just ripped again. As soon as I'm finished we'll be back outside."
"Oh, that's ok. Just take your time," he nodded. "And you are?" he asked, turning to Carrie.
"Carrie U-Underwood, sir," Carrie replied.
"Today's her first day," Kelly explained.
"You're showing her around?" he asked.
"Yes sir," she smiled.
"You make sure to listen to her," he commented to Carrie. "She'll set you on the right track."
"Yes sir," Carrie nodded before the large man walked away.
Kelly laughed at the pale look on the new girl's face.
"That's vice-principal Tate," she explained, refocusing on her bag. "Trust me, he's not as bad as he looks. Just be polite, and stay out of trouble and you'll be fine."
Carrie nodded, sitting beside her.
"A lot to take in?" Kelly asked, tying a knot to secure the thread as she finished sewing up the tear.
"Yea," Carrie replied watching as Kelly started to duck tap the inside of her bag where the hole had been.
"Reinforcement," Kelly explained with a smile.
"You've done this before?"
"Not with this bag, but yea," she nodded, pushing herself back up to her feet. She offered Carrie her hand and helped her up as well. "So, the bell's about to ring, so there's no point of going outside. But if you want, I can go ahead and show you to your next class. It's on the third floor, so you'll need the head start."
"Sure," Carrie said, following as Kelly led the way to the stairs. Half way up the second flight, the bell rang.
"Here we go," Kelly said, stopping in front of a door. The sound of students rushing up the stairs could be heard. She noticed the look of exhaustion on the blonde's face. "Don't worry. Two more classes, then you're done."
"Thank God," Carrie sighed heavily.
Kelly laughed, "I'll be here when you get out."
"Thanks."
