The room was dark; only Luca’s desk light was on. She was finishing up the rest of the script she was supposed to write. She glanced at the clock. It read 1:21 in bright, blaring red neon letters. She sighed, rubbing her eyes.
That evening had taken so long. She rubbed her arm subconsciously. She was so stupid sometimes. Of course, like the idiot she was, she had forgotten to do the dishes. She got up and stretched and heard a knock at her door. Luca knew that if she didn’t get it, whoever was behind it would be even worse.
She opened it and her step dad came bursting in. He knocked her to the floor and started to kick her in the stomach, no reason behind it. He yanked her up by her hair and slapped her across the face. She cried out in pain, and instantly regretted it. Whenever she showed pain, more was inflicted. He gripped her arms and threw her to the floor and punched her in the stomach. His anger was sated for the time being. Luca was tough, though. She got up shakily and sat on her bed. She had taken this before. When she ran to the bathroom and started puking up blood, then she got scared. She ran back into her bedroom, picked her cell phone up, and rifled through a stack of school papers. She found the syllabus Iero had given her. She looked at the bottom, found his number, and put it in her phone. She pressed talk.
Nothing.
Her phone was out of time. She gave a strangled cry and collapsed on her bed.
She awoke, perfectly not okay. But she was a fighter. She got around for school, and left for the bus on time.
Most of her day was spent doodling in her notebook. Gerard didn’t take notice of her pain or the bruises. Perhaps he didn’t care.
Lunch came and went unfortunately. She went to her classroom and sat down silently, avoiding Mr. Iero’s eyes that seemed to follow her. Before the bell rang, he ran into his room and slammed the door in another kids face, laughing the whole time.
“We are starting with props today, everyone!” He said. Everyone came up with a partner and was given a prop and used it in as many ways as possible. Luca and another girl got a string of some kind. The class was a little on the loud side, but it didn’t matter. Luca was actually enjoying herself. Until the girl decided to play costumer. She pulled Luca’s shirt up a little and the class hushed after the many rounds of ‘Oh my God!’ or ‘Look!’
‘Shit…’ Luca thought as Mr. Iero jumped off the desk he was sitting on, put his hand on her shoulder and steered her out of the classroom and into the hallway.
“Luca, is there something you want to tell me?” He asked, peering into her eyes. She shook her head but stayed silent. “Are you sure? What were those bruises?”
“I fell down the stairs last night. Some of them were from lifting at tech.” She answered lightly. Her voice strained.
“You can tell me anything.” He said. She sighed, knowing she had heard those words someplace else. Gerard had said that, and she couldn’t tell him anything. She doubted she could tell anything to the man in front of her, either. “It’s okay.”
“Thanks.” She said, following him back into class. The bell rang minutes later and she was relieved. Of course, after school came in a hurry.
She was sitting in the theatre in the comfortable blue chair when Iero walked into the room. He smiled and beckoned her forward. “Will you go downstairs into the storage tunnels, open it up, and wait for me? I need some help.”
She nodded, unsuspecting. She took his keys to the downstairs and opened everything up. She was standing in the middle of the tunnel, inspecting the platforms when the raven-haired teacher appeared, keys jangling at his side. There was a slight slam as the door shut behind him and his grin slid off of his face. Luca knew what was coming and braced herself, but it still hit her like a brick wall. “Luca, you need to tell me what’s going on. Is it at home?”
Luca kept her gaze to the ground, feeling his eyes hot on her. “I just fell down the stairs, nothing big. I got hurt yesterday down here, too.”
“Luca, I know you’re lying, and more so about the tech. You didn’t lift anything yesterday. But that’s okay. I can’t force you to tell me something.” He said, struggling to pick up a platform. She went to the other side. “For the time being, help me take this upstairs. It looks like we have something to do.”
When they were done, he watched as she jumped off the stage and went over to Anna and sat down. She rubbed her stomach subconsciously, and he bit his lip. She smiled slowly and started laughing, falling backwards onto the floor. She seemed pretty good when she was with her friends.
Luca cleared her throat and the tech director walked through the auditorium doors, holding his toolkit. “Hi, Mr. Toro!” He smiled at her, his brown eyes laughing as usual. His chestnut colored hair was in its usual disarray. Luca jumped up and followed him and Anna down into the scene shop underneath the stage to build the set.
She left soon after that. She turned around and caught his eye as she walked towards the door. “Bye Luca.” He called, his eyes glittering in knowledge. She waved.
“Bye Mr. Iero.” She said, pressing the door open with her back, keeping the eye contact as long as she could. He smirked before the door shut.
