***************
His mind sluggishly came back to life as the freeze liquid was vacuumed from his chamber. It took him a moment to realize he had a red alert flashing in front of him; someone was having a serious issue waking up.
He knew it was coming but still when the chamber opened he was so cold he all but fell on his face. He looked around and realized the pilots were out too, that meant something had gone very wrong. The other chambers were screeching out alarms as they did an emergency thaw of the individuals inside. Ignoring the other alarms he stumbled toward the red lighted chamber cursing his frozen fingers.
The Koyra, his chamber was malfunctioning. He was starting to wake up, but the freeze liquid wasn’t draining. He was going to freeze to death and soon. Since people in the hibernation chambers were in a deep sleep their core temperatures were lowered. It was essential the freeze liquid be out of the chamber before the individual regained all metabolic functions or the liquid would drain heat from the body.
He pulled the chamber out into its horizontal position and as fast as his could force his fingers to work he began trying to send the Koyra back under so he could drain the liquid. The smaller man jerked and his stats went into the red. The problem scrolled down the side of the chamber, he wasn’t getting air, something was lodged in his throat or the respirator was failing. James swore and a painfully familiar feeling of helplessness surrounded him. The hatch wouldn’t open with the freeze liquid still in it and he couldn’t get to the respirator without opening the hatch.
“Move.” The husky word left no room for disobedience. Without thinking James stepped away. A bright flash lit up the room and the thick glass sizzled and popped as it melted and the freeze liquid poured out of the hole onto the floor. The Koyra was fully conscious and struggling to breathe. Matt tore the hatch open and pulled the smaller man out. His skin was deathly pale and his struggles were growing weaker. Matt all but dropped him on the floor and pulled his mouth open, he stuck a finger down his throat and the Koyra’s breathing haphazardly started again. He rolled onto his side and vomited and his breathing became steadier. Matt stiffly pulled him close again and sighed; James went to a cabinet on the other side of the room and pulled out two blankets.
“Here.” He said quietly handing the blankets to Matt; he nodded his thanks and carefully wrapped the Koyra in them. Two soft hisses announced Johnny and Brian finally coming out of their chambers. Johnny stumbled out drunkenly and Brian woke up with his usual charm cursing everyone and everything he could think of.
“What the fuck is going on?” He growled trying to move his limbs and fingers. James sighed and pulled Johnny’s small, cold body close, “Chamber malfunction.” He said, “Watch the freeze.” He said waving at the floor. Brian growled and stepped around the greenish liquid.
“That wasn’t a malfunction.” Matt said, James heard fury underlying his words and he looked at him surprised. “What?”
Carefully shifting the now sleeping Koyra to a more comfortable position he pointed at the back of the ruined chamber. James went around and let out a startled gasp, the pump box was smashed. The freeze liquid didn’t drain because there was nothing to pump it out. He looked around angrily for the pilots. They would’ve been the only ones that could’ve gotten in and out of their chambers by themselves.
“I…I don’t think we’re still in space.” Johnny said faintly behind him. James stared at the forward view screen. What should’ve been the blackness of space dotted with stars was a murky darkness with vague shapes darting sinuously through the shadows.
“James,” Matt’s husky voice was controlled again, “get him warm again.” He said when James knelt next to him. Carefully he handed the freezing Koyra to him and then stiffly stood up, “Brian come with me.” He said walking to the back.
“Where’re you going?” Johnny asked stepping closer to James. Without pausing Matt answered, “I don’t think the pilots are still here.”
Brian followed him stretching and flexing his frigid body. Johnny collapsed next to James and looked at the Koyra fearfully, “What happened?” he whispered. James sighed, “I have no idea.” He rubbed the Koyra’s chest with the blanket trying to get his temperature up.
They heard Brian before he walked back into the small holding chamber, “Those cowards!” He seemed to be in the middle of a rant and James rolled his eyes and interrupted him, “Before you go off again, mind telling us what’s going on?” he said sarcastically. Brian leveled him with a cold look, “The pilots are gone, and they had the decency to take both escape boats with them.” He began muttering curses and James swore quietly.
“Either we were attacked or they’ve gone to great trouble to make sure that’s the only explanation people will come up with.” Matt said walking over to James and taking the Koyra from him again and settling on the floor across from him. To his surprise the Koyra immediately opened his eyes when he was with Matt.
“I doubt we were attacked.” He said quietly, his voice was a light tenor and Matt looked down at him and quirked an eyebrow. Moving with a fluidity that made James jealous he sat up and curled against Matt’s side shivering slightly, “If we were attacked the chambers would’ve drained as soon as the weapons were fired.”
Matt nodded slowly, “I forgot about that.”
“How did you do that?” Johnny asked slightly awed. Matt and the Koyra both looked at him, “Do what?” Matt asked. Johnny shook his head, “Not you, him. How did you move so fast?”
James looked down at him and saw his eyes bright with curiosity. The Koyra blinked and then gave him a small smile, “My core temperature is lower than yours.” He said shyly.
“How much lower?” James asked his medical curiosity piqued. The Koyra shrugged, “About thirteen or fourteen degrees I think.”
“My Gods are you serious?” James exclaimed. He knew he was gaping but he couldn’t help it. The Api ran a steady one o’ six point three degree temperature, thirteen degrees below that was a cooling corpse. The Koyra nodded again.
“As interesting as I know this is,” Matt said gently as he slowly stood, “we need to know where we are.” He walked over to the computer console and booted up the other two forward view screens. They didn’t show anything different from the main screen and he sighed. “Zack I need you to run a diagnostic. The engine room looked pretty banged up.”
With an eerie grace Zack stood and joined him at the controls and in a moment a diagnostic screen was up and scanning. James found the Koyra’s familiarity with their controls as unsettling as his quick recovery from the cold. To take his mind off of his actions he occupied himself with checking over Johnny and then getting up and making his way to the cranky strategist.
“You know why they did it don’t you.” He said lowly as James checked him over, he nodded.
“I don’t blame them really. I wish they would’ve woken us up though.” He continued. James sighed, “How believable would it be if everyone but the Koyra survived?”
“Who would’ve cared.” He countered easily. James had no answer to that.
“Matt,” the word was a soft sigh from the Koyra’s lips, “the hull has taken a lot of damage, there’s only a twenty percent integrity left in some areas, and the life support has also suffered some irreparable damage.” He gave his report in a barely audible voice. Matt swore lightly, “According to the ship’s logs we’re quite a ways off course, there was a distress signal sent but it’ll take at least a month for help to get here.”
“Great. So we’re fucked.” Brian muttered. Johnny continued looking at the view screens with a fair amount of apprehension, “Where are we?” he whispered. Matt sighed, “I have no idea. Zack?”
The Koyra clicked away on the console and shook his head, “The ship’s Box was damaged, most of the files have been corrupted. But I think I can salvage some.” He murmured.
“Well at least they were thorough.” Brian growled. James ignored him and went to stand by Johnny.
“Here.” The Koyra said quietly. The view screens darkened and at first they were nothing but fuzz and garbled sounds then the screens cleared and greenish waves lapped the outer cameras, then they were surrounded by green murk. Muted beams of sunlight filtered through the water but as they continued to sink the light faded and they were engulfed in darkness. The screens dissolved into fuzz again and the Koyra switched the screens back to real time.
“Wonderful, we’re Gods know how far underwater on a strange planet and our life support probably won’t last us through the night.” Brian began stalking back and forth as his body warmed more. Matt stayed quiet before he asked the Koyra, “Zack, how much damage have the engines taken?”
The Koyra typed in a command, “Engine One is functioning at thirty-six percent and Engine Two is at fifty-four percent.” He began typing on the console again, “If we run the console on minimum power and divert the power from lights and life support we can get the shield up and use the engines at about thirty percent each.” He looked at Matt and the captain smiled a little. “Get started. Everyone else, grab your gear.”
“We don’t know if we can survive in this planet’s atmosphere.” James said quietly. Matt shrugged, “We’re guaranteed to die if we stay down here.” He said simply. James turned and went to the small lockers and pulled out his clothes and began getting ready to face the unknown.
A/N: Can you tell I’ve been watching way too much Star Trek?
