AN: Ero, I'm so sorry to hear you weren't feeling well! Glad you're better now, at least. You are better, right?!?! I just want to send you my homemade chicken soup!
Johnny left the restaurant feeling pleased overall. He had clearly convinced Charity that it was a good idea to be his nanny. His nanny? The nanny for his kids, his kids! That’s what he meant to say.
When he had seen her at the café in those glass pearls, he had known then that she was perfect. When she followed him to the restaurant, he knew he had to have her with him. She would do everything for his kids that he couldn’t do. He could see it in her eyes.
Now he just had to get the house ready.
**
The children arrived three days later. Lily-Rose came bouncing out the car that had picked them up from the airport. Johnny was already kneeling down with open arms. She leapt into them, and Jack wasn’t far behind. The actor held his kids tightly to him, breathing them in.
He had missed them. God, he had missed them so dreadfully. Lily-Rose pulled away and looked straight into his face. His heart almost broke. She was looking for an answer to a question that neither one of his children had said out loud yet.
Where did you go? Why did you go? Didn’t you want us anymore? Weren’t we important to you anymore? Don’t you love us? Please don’t ever go like that again.
“I missed you, Daddy.”
“I missed you too, baby girl.” He hugged her tightly, feeling her tiny heart pounding the same rhythm as his own.
“Daddy, Daddy, I missed you, too.” Jack chirped. Johnny smiled and kissed his son on the top of his head.
“I know. I missed you. I missed you both so much. Come on, let’s go inside and you can see your bedrooms.”
The children skipped upstairs, seeming to be brimming with happiness. But Johnny couldn’t shake the feeling that he was walking on eggshells. There was something the matter, though he couldn’t name what it was. He was waiting for something, for something to happen or be said.
He showed each of his kids their bare, empty rooms. He promised them the chance to decorate any way they saw fit. Lily-Roses’ eyes gleamed at the prospect, and he had to chuckle. Still a woman, albeit it a miniature one.
“And this one is my room.” He pointed to a closed door. He didn’t set any rules about not going in there. He wanted his kids to feel like they could come and find him anytime they needed him.
“And that’s where Maman will sleep when she comes, isn’t it?” Lily-Rose looked up, eyes sharply taking in his every movement. She was searching for the answer to those questions he had felt in the air when they arrived.
“Of course,” he lied smoothly.
After they had explored the house, he gathered the min the living room and ordered some take out. They sat on the floor, eating with chopsticks out of the cartons. It was nice, he thought, not to have to worry about them dropping rice on the rug. Vanessa would have thrown a fit.
“Guys, I have something to tell you.” He announced.
“We’re getting a puppy!” Jack burst in, excitedly.
“Well, we can.” Of course they could. He knew the kids had been dying for one for quite some time now. “But that’s not what I wanted to tell you. You know that I have to work, right?”
“Playing pretend all day.” Lily-Rose wiped some sauce from her mouth, missing what was on the top of her nose. Johnny nodded and gently wiped her face with his own napkin.
“Right. And while I’m a work, you need someone to help look after you. Help you get dressed for school, and get your lunches packed. So I decided to get you a nanny!”
The children were dead silent for a few seconds.
“Won’t Maman do those things?” Jack asked, confused.
“Well, sure. When she gets here. But I need some extra help until then. The nanny is coming tomorrow. Her name is Charity, and I know that you’ll be SUPER nice to her. Right?” he gave them each a serious look. His daughter sighed and poked at her chicken.
“I’d rather have Maman do it.”
“I know, but she can’t right now. This is only until she comes back.” Neither of the kids spoke. They looked dejectedly at their dinners. He didn’t quite understand why they were so upset about this.
“Why so glum?”
“Because she won’t do things like Maman!” Jack shook his head. “She won’t know how to cut the crusts off my sandwiches, or how to put extra cinnamon in the applesauce, or-or how much milk I get before bedtime…” he trailed off.
“We can tell her those things. Charity wants to do everything right for you guys. She wants to make sure you two are happy and healthy, okay?” he opened his arms and gathered his children in.
“What if we hate her, Daddy?” Jack asked.
“You won’t hate her.” He assured them. “I’ve already met her. Do you think I’d hire someone to look after the two most important people in my life without carefully screening them?”
Okay, in all actuality, her Myspace had been private, but at least her default picture hadn’t been anything slutty. And he had found an old Live Journal from when she was fifteen that basically complained about school and her mother. Nothing out of the ordinary. Besides, she wore glass pearls. And he had called the references she left him, and they had all been glowing.
There was just something about her, something about the look in her eyes that made him trust her. And he’d be around for the whole first day anyway, would set up those Nanny-Cam things. Nothing bad would happen.
“But what if?” Jack insisted.
“If you do hate her, then we’ll find someone else. Okay? Can we agree to that? You have to give Charity a try, but if it doesn’t work out, we will find someone else.”
“Okay, Daddy.” They chorused. Johnny smiled. There was no way they could hate her.
