Chapter 3 – Lessons Learned
Vin eased back in his seat undoing his seatbelt. The cabin light was finally out and he stretched removing his jacket and made himself more comfortable. The white muscle shirt he wore left nothing to the imagination. His broad shoulders rippled as he stood to put his jacket in the overhead compartment and the stewardess eyed him attentively.
Whispering to the other attendants and gesturing in his direction she smiled brightly at him and gave him a wink. The attention was flattering and not wanting to be rude he smiled and nodded back at her, but the thought in his head was “Not on your life honey.” He surprised himself with just how serious he was with that thought.
“I fucked up one time, and I’ll not go that route again,” he said under his breath. The “fuck up” he spoke of was his involvement with a coworker on one of his films. The affair was brief and uneventful but it sure as hell made every magazine and newspaper in sight. Needless to say Raven was not pleased. After reading about his indiscretion in several tabloids she’d promptly packed everything and anything that even reminded her of Vin and meeting him as his car pulled up, heaved it all out the door at his driver, not even allowing Vin to get completely out of the limo with his “explanation.” He got as far as “honey I can explain…” before the first of his things landed at his feet. The twins were not exactly happy with him either, they looked up to him, and for them this was the ultimate betrayal. It was all Craig could do to restrain his usually calm sibling Christopher.
“You playin’ fast and loose with my sister? Who the hell do you think you are?” Vin could probably have taken Chris and Craig too for that matter, but instead he stood there silent…listening to the sounds of devastation… devastation he’d caused. Too ashamed to even argue back. He was important to those boys, in ways he’d never even imagined and now he’d ruined it. To them he was more than their sister’s boyfriend; over the last three years he’d become almost a father figure to them. He’d been particularly close to Craig and the disappointment and hurt in their eyes was more than he could bear. And then there was Raven. No woman had ever trusted him as she had. Had ever given him the freedom to be himself as she had, and now here she was, tears streaking her cheeks as she cursed his infidelity and her own foolhardiness for trusting him in the first place…vowing to never, ever let him get within 50 feet of her again. He couldn’t think of a single moment in his life when he’d felt lower. So, sitting here now, with the obvious flirtation of the attendant in his face, it was not ego but insight, realization of what he’d almost lost, that had him thinking to himself “dream on sister, cause it ain’t gonna happen.”
It had taken months, literally months; before Raven would even speak to him…take his calls. And surprisingly enough, it had been Christopher who had been the go-between. Vin had called that day, just as he had every day since their breakup and as luck would have it, Chris answered the phone. He’d asked him, begged him not to hang-up just to “hear him out,” and he set about pleading his case. It was the first time he’d had the opportunity to apologize, that is without someone hanging up on him or slamming a door in his face, and he did it profusely. Christopher listened quietly, and then it was his turn to get some things off his chest.
“You need to understand,” he said, “…my sister loves you, God only knows why after what you did, but she does, and that’s the only reason why I’m still on this phone. I love her, Craig loves her, and we thought you loved her, but apparently all you had on your mind was your ego and your Johnson.”
Vin tried to interrupt, “Wait a minute now, that’s not….”
“That’s not what? The way it was? Let me tell you how it was…my sister, my beautiful sister who never did anything but love and support you, crying herself to sleep every night, doubting herself...blaming herself for your bullshit. My sister wondering what it was that she did wrong to make you seek out another woman. And then the worse part….coming to the realization that it wasn’t her, it wasn’t anything she did or didn’t do….it was just that the man she chose to entrust her heart to wasn’t shit! Like I said …I don’t know which part has been worse… her blaming herself, or realizing that she’s been….that we’ve all been lousy judges of character.”
Vin sat quietly; Christopher’s words cut deep, the impact hit home in a way he wasn’t prepared for. This was the first time since the breakup that anyone in the family had really talked to him. Family, “wow” he thought, how easily that word came to him when he thought of them. They really were his family, he had brought this chaos into their lives and now he had to find away to make things right. Usually as soon as they heard his voice on the phone they’d hang up, and if he showed up at the house he got the door slammed in his face. He knew things had gotten bad at the house, he knew Raven was furious with him, he expected that, but he hadn’t known about this.
“I hate to see her like this…,” Chris went on…“she’s miserable.” “Oh yeah, she tries to hide it from us but I see through it, and apparently….obviously you’re the only one who can fix it. Do you remember what you said to that guy in your movie?”
“What do you mean?” came Vin’s puzzled reply.
“You told him, ‘You break her heart I’ll break your neck’, remember?”
“I remember,” he said quietly.
“Well I’m gonna help you, …this time, but you better take it to heart, cause I swear…if you hurt her again there won’t be a bodyguard big enough…are we clear?”
“Yeah man, we’re clear.”
And that was how it started, the talking, the communicating again. Christopher encouraged his sister to listen to what Vin had to say, not to forget what he’d done, but just to listen…for now.
