Book One: One Thousand and One Nights
Chapter 3: Through your Eyes
It was silent there. Silent. Still. Devoid of anything useless. Devoid of fripperies. A vision of a past long, long gone... The vista was beautiful – startling because of its strangeness. The improbability of it, sometimes, on more cynical days, made him laugh.
Like an onion skin, Mya-vi-san, Asa-gii thought to himself. Inside the inside the inside... Behind that which was behind the behind...
He was sitting in a green meadow, on a cheerfully checkered blue and green picnic blanket. As far as the eye could see, the hills were covered with green grass. Underneath his fingers, the engineered plant, now an endangered vegetation, crinkled. And above him – blue sky, bright as a robin's eggshells. Far above him, a hawk circled – and in the bracken to his left and right something rustled in the bushes.
Beyond the furthest hill (he was sure it was merely a hologram beyond that point), realistic mountains rose, white capped. Mount Fuji, perhaps, and the geography of this small country before the war to end all wars. Before the rise in technology and urban sprawl – before the Shinsengumi and the Bakumatsu Era... Before... Before... Before...
Somewhere a bird called, and some butterflies rose from flowers to settle on another patch of chrysanthemums. A rabbit darted out – the hawk dropped – and both disappared over the crest of the hill... Drawing his knees up under his chin, Asa-gii sighed in contentment.
It's hard sometimes, Asa-gii thought whimsically. To tell where the truth and the falsehoods lie... Still... here...
In this silence, let me remember... this beautiful dream...
-
“I heard that Lord Mya-vi – the one new in town – has been... around you many times...” Ry-zaa whispered to Asa-gii that night as they snuggled together under their shared bedding.
Asa-gii lay there, back to Ry-zaa, frozen. Uncertain.
What do I say... To admit – no. No. There's nothing to admit.
“What about Lord Mya-vi?” asked Asa-gii with a light laugh, finally turning around to face his close companion. “You want him?”
“He's... nice...” Ry-zaa shifted closer.
In the moonlight, Ry-zaa's blonde hair seemed ghostly... His bright eyes in his fine-boned face were peaked with curiosity. Asa-gii reached out and pulled Ry-zaa closer. Their foreheads knocked against each other gently in the dim light.
“What an odd thing to say,” Asa-gii chuckled. “Is that all?”
“Well... I just... wanted to say that...”
"I'm glad to have your blessing,” laughed Asa-gii. “After all, who wants to discourage a so-important customer.”
Ry-zaa stiffened.
“That bothers you,” noted Asa-gii quietly.
“I'm sorry... I'm so so sorry... I just... I... Even now...”
Asa-gii sighed and gathered Ry-zaa up into his arms.
For a while nothing was said.
“I try hard every day – but it makes me sick. Their eyes.... Their touches... I'm so small and different... To them, I am... nothing... Nothing... It's so different from....”
“I told you not to think of him,” sighed Asa-gii. “It makes things worse.”
“You've never been in love!”
Asa-gii laughed shortly, Ry-zaa wiped away his tears.
“No. I guess not.”
A silence.
“I'm glad. This way. I can be strong. For the both of us.”
“It's not right!” Ry-zaa protested, pulling away. “If he makes you happy, you should go to him.”
Asa-gii's lax hands tightened around each other, he laid back down on the pillow, beckoning Ry-zaa to follow.
“When... when... the Hokado incident happened... you had to say... goodbye to alot of things. Love... is one such casualty.”
Ry-zaa bit his lip.
“But... my heart isn't dead. It isn't. I feel the same feelings for him, as the day that I met him. He -”
“Is dead to you now. As you are to him,” said Asa-gii gently. “I'm sorry. That is the price.”
He drew his arms around the quaking shoulders of Ry-zaa, burying the heavy sobs of the younger courtesan in clothing and quilts. The sadness and the guilt swamped Asa-gii. He bit his lip viciously.
Surely I have no more tears to shed... I am sorry, Ry-zaa for burying your dreams.
-
Somedays, Mya-vi suprised himself. As he stood there in the mirror, giving himself another once over, he grinned and shook his fist at himself in the mirror. This was going to be a great day. Plans, plans... so many of them. Balls he couldn't decline, debutantes which bored him to death, men with no guts or, worse, no intelligence. It was if the people of Court were merchandise in a warehouse. Like whores – prostituting their bodies for the pleasure – with no thought for the morrow...
Mya-vi sighed.
I want... something to last... Something to hold on to.
He winked at himself in the mirror, inspecting his newest addition to his earring collection. The first bunch he had gotten a long time ago. When he was young... when he was fifteen... They had been the rage then – and returning to the city so many years later, it was interesting to see the fashion of metal ornamentation was still in. Looking different maybe... but still the same... Already Tsu-ne's ears were bristling with “spacers” and rings.
So a new Mya-vi, for a new era. A new chance....
He grabbed the synthetic red roses he had bought three hours earlier and posed with them in the mirror. It was a good look. Suit and gloves.
Well... He admitted bitterly to himself. The gloves aren't so much for aesthetics... Still...
With his gloves on, the markings were hidden. Adjusting his perpetually high collars, he ensured that everything was appropriately covered. Purplish-grey suit with black pinstripes. A small nod to the inner Mya-vi which was screaming to let loose ever since he had arrived in Ground-T.
After all, beneath the glitz and the decadence, there was very little freedom. Bizarre behaviour was readily banished – anti-social tendencies were frowned upon – as well as anything like spiritual powers or unusual physical traits. Three days after entering past the city walls – three days of staring had driven Mya-vi out to buy proper shirts and gloves.
No more funky clothing, or irresponsible actions here. No time to run out with Tsu-ne and Hiiro-ki in the fields... There was only politics, technological sessions, balls and...
Asa-gii....
Mya-vi smiled slowly at the memory of the courtesan. He could just see Asa-gii now... Tall. Slender. His pale, unlined face raised – a tiny mysterious smile on his dark red lips. And the pink shadows at the corners of his blue eyes... Unlike his own tattooed pierced body, now lean and muscled due to heavy work in the fields, Asa-gii was pure and soft. Like a virgin. There was no markings on him. And only two piercings... His dainty ears... The long black hair, most often done up in hair pins and exotic skewers...
And he was mysterious. Even though Asa-gii's body had lain bare before him many times now – even though they had lain together for many hours, beyond the required time, Mya-vi felt that he had only just scraped the surface of the quiet courtesan.
Angel... he thought with a smile... Let me surprise you today.
-
When Mya-vi passed through the doors of Names of the Roses, Asa-gii was in the front entrance talking to the short, cute blonde. The younger courtesan seemed mildly upset about something – but under Asa-gii's calm clasp and gentle voice, he quieted. After a moment, they moved apart, the blonde disappearing somewhere further inside the brothel. Asa-gii turned, bumping into Mya-vi who stood there silently watching in the dark.
“Oh...” Asa-gii's lips turned up in a small smile. “Lord Mya-vi... It is good to see you -”
“The pleasure is mine,” Mya-vi grinned, taking Asa-gii's hand and kissing it.
“Ahhh!” The hostess appeared suddenly, her sharp eyes kindling at the familiar face of Lord Myavi. “Ah! Lord Mya-vi! How good it is to see you... I suppose you'll be wanting... err...”
“I'm sorry,” Asa-gii smiled at Mya-vi. “My Lordship suprised us by his early arrival.”
Lord Mya-vi checked his pocket watch.
“Yeah... and not a second too late... I wanted to spend more time with you today – since I'll be too busy to come around for the next little while...” He smiled at the courtesan. “I guess you could say that I'm addicted... or you have stolen my heart...”
Asa-gii received the flowers silently, his slim hands gripping the stems tightly.
“You make me blush, my Lord,” he whispered. “But... I was going out... my off day....”
“Perhaps, I could accompany you then?” Lord Mya-vi grinned, scratching his head, feeling awkward.
To call today WAS a bad idea! You are wrecking his time off. And I'm sure he is a busy person... On the other hand, this week is going to be busy... this is my only chance to meet up...
Asa-gii smiled softly.
“Let me put these away then – we can go together.”
Mya-vi nodded, trying to keep his sudden delight in check. It wouldn't do to be too obvious.
After a moment, Asa-gii reappeared, hurriedly pulling on a tailored fleece coat with faux fur edging. Lightly tinted glass also placed on his nose, Asa-gii looked so different to Mya-vi's delighted eyes.
Natural. As he is. No pretentions...
It was thrilling. And honoring.
They left the brothel silently. Now outside the familiar confines, a new awkwardness reigned over the pair. Silently they passed under the gaudy lights of the love-love hotels and the bars, clubs and trendy hang out spots. Mya-vi could have sworn he saw a couple of familiar faces, but he said nothing as he passed by.
Glancing sideways at his quiet companion, Mya-vi wondered what was going on inside the courtesan's mind. Asa-gii's face was passive, revealing nothing... And already they were in a seedier part of town (if that was possible) – and Mya-vi had long passed places of familiarity. Here, the darker side of Ground-T was clearly revealed. Men and woman with deformations dating back to the genetic mess of the Armageddon... Genetically impossible to heal. But at least they were human...
Mya-vi shuddered remembering the vampire who had hunted him that night long ago outside of Kuroka.
And this is where my angel lives... He stared at several men who lurked from the alleyways, their eyes gleaming yellow in the dim streetlight.
-
To put it mildly, Tsu-ne was lost. There had been a fight in the bar that he had met Hiiro-ki at – and in the tangle of arms and legs, he ended up forced out of the bar-grill and out onto a backstreet. However, his attempt to circle round had somehow gotten confused – and now, here he was – wandering a particularly scummy street. Feeling very out of it, dressed in leather boots, low-riding jeans and a sparkly zip-up over a hot pink undershirt. Jerking around nervously, clutching his black bag close to him, he watched the street carefully before continuing onward.
I'm fucked... but I can't stop. If I stop... I'm gonna be fucked. Literally. And they'd literally kill for this handbag. Hell... I literally killed for this handbag...
Biting his lip nervously, Tsu-ne forged on bravely, keeping to the well-lit parts of the street. He was sure that there were a couple of people following him. Men or women, he couldn't tell. Some of them were so deformed, they didn't even have normal faces.
He remembered his brother's cautionary tones in the carriage.
Uncultivated...
This is what he was talking about? But this is INSIDE the city! Dammit! This isn't supposed to be outside the Fence!
Trying to keep himself from totally freaking out on the street, the young man walked faster.
Hiiro-ki... Hiiro-ki... where are you when I need you?
-
Asa-gii was considering a food stand when Mya-vi finally spoke up.
“You're going home for the night?” he asked, as Asa-gii approached the small street vendor and ordered some strange noodles and meat to go.
Asagi cocked his head.
“You have a better place?”
Mya-vi leaned forward and ordered double, paid for both meals and then grinned at his glowering companion.
“Hell yeah.”
“I see.”
A silence.
Then, Asa-gii sighed. “What?”
“What do you mean, what?”
“You are staring at me.”
“Lots of people stare at you. For good reason.”
“No. I mean. You've been... staring at me. Leering and staring is totally different.”
“Ah. Yes... well... I was just wondering...”
“Hmmmm?” Asa-gii leaned forward and snagged his takeout bag.
Mya-vi followed suit.
“I was thinking how different you are when money is involved.”
Asa-gii froze then swiveled and glared at his customer.
“Who says it's all about money?”
“Nobody,” replied Mya-vi soothingly. He winked. “I like it this way...”
The aristocrat playfully slung an arm around the courtesan. It was heady – to smell that fragrance on his...
Lover...
His lover.
HIS lover.
His LOVER.
Saying it over and over again...
Sounds so good.... But totally unrealistic.
He laughed at his idiocy.
“What now?” asked Asa-gii, brows furrowing. “You seem to be far away again...”
“Just thinking... how you are different. How good it is. How nice it would be for you to come with me. I've got a nice space... We can eat, hang out... sleep...”
He paused, placed a finger on Asa-gii's lips, stopping protests he was sure would come.
“No. Strings. Attached.” He promised.
Asa-gii batted Mya-vi's hand away.
“No strings attached? Somehow it seems familiar – oh! I remember... I've heard this kind of proposition – a million times before! Believe me!”
“I believe you. I believe that every single one of them wasn't even sincere.”
“You have that right.”
“But I'm different.”
Asa-gii raised a brow at his companion.
“Re-ally...”
“For true. Here...” Mya-vi placed the apartment keys in Asa-gii's hand. “There's your insurance. Try me.”
Asa-gii stared at the keys.
The keys...
“Well?”
Asa-gii bit his lip and then slowly nodded.
“Okay.”
“Let's get going then!” grinned Mya-vi. “No time to waste!”
Asa-gii trailed after the taller man, still dazed with confusion. He had said yes against all odds.
Ry-zaa... What is happening to me....
-
He was running blind. Blind and there was no knowing where to go. The blank faces of the buildings, the depressed smell of blood, sweat and dirt filled his senses. And everywhere there was the darkness. Something loomed up – he swerved into the nearest alleyway and kept running, banging into trash cans and old piping... The floor was slanting downward...
It wasn't a floor, he realized.
It wasn't an alleyway either.
It was an old bridge road connecting to a large highway. What had been a large highway... but he was under it now – underneath it – underneath the main street of the city... He guessed that long ago, when the city was rebuilt, the highway had merely become a foundation for the new layer of buildings.... It explained the total absence of light – and the turgid smell of rot and decay. Underneath his feet, cracked pavement and marshy land threatened his steps...
Tsu-ne screamed as the realization hit him.
He was lost in the dark. In the bowels of the city. And nobody who cared could hear him.
