Part 3: The Present
“Holyshit, Tesshi, you’ve got balls! Trying to pick up your mom’s teacher!” Ryo shook his head, chuckling a little.
YamaPi frowned, staring into the fire intently. He’d noticed that the youngest NEWS member had been dancing a little more suggestively, been dressing a little cooler, and giving more seductive poses and looks at photo-shoots. So that had been why. He didn’t really blame the kid. He well remembered being younger, and called pretty and cute. He’d been a little tired of not being taken completely serious so he’d gained a little weight and buffed up. Since then he’d been called cool and sexy, and he liked it fine that way.
‘Mama’ Koyama put a comforting hand on Tegoshi’s arm. “Why didn’t you say anything? I know when we first formed we weren’t that close, but this time around we’re closer. We’d have been there for you.”
“Especially me,” Masuda added, looking hurt. They’d been a duo during the hiatus of NEWS, and close friends. He’d have thought Tegoshi would have at least confided in him.
“Sometimes you need to figure things out alone first,” YamaPi spoke up, glancing at the young singer. “So did you take her to karaoke?”
Tegoshi smiled thankfully, and nodded. “It was raining, and dark by the time the lesson ended. My mom asked if I’d walk Dani home. We didn’t talk much at first, but at her door she said she’d never been to karaoke. I remember feeling so excited, knowing it was her way of saying she’d go with me. This was on a Thursday, and I thought at first of taking her the next night, but decided she’d be tired after teaching a class all day, and then my mom in the evening. So I told her I’d pick her up at ten Saturday morning.”
“You decided on a whole day thing,” Shige nodded, grinning.
Tegoshi nodded. “Yeah,” he smiled. He remembered that day fondly.
The day had been nice, and he’d arrived at ten to pick her up. They’d gone to the market where she did her shopping for food, and he’d enjoyed that. He liked listening to her trying to haggle for some prices, sometimes getting caught on her Japanese, and other times trying to gesture madly to be understood. They ate at a ramen shop, and then brought her purchases to her place. She had a tiny apartment above a small fruit shop. Basically a tiny kitchen and a room with a small box bed against one wall and a small low table for eating at, the walls were freshly painted, and the floors were polished wood. He figured she’d been doing work to make it look a little better. She had watercolours of sakuras on the wall, and he curiously peered into the bathroom while she put the groceries away. The bathroom had a sliding door, and inside was the toilet, sink, shower, but no tub. The rest of the day had been spent browsing shops, having dinner, and then karaoke. There’d been no goodnight kiss, though he’d considered it. Instead he’d walked her to her door, thanked her for a fun day, and said goodnight.
“You dated her after that,” stated Ryo. “Now I think back, you were happier then.”
YamaPi glanced up at the broken-hearted young man. “Now I know why you left early the night you turned 20.”
“That’s right!” Koyama agreed. “He did! So you ditched us for a girl,” he teased.
“Was she at the celebration that day?” Shige asked. “I didn’t see you with a girl there. Your family was there, I remember that, and us.”
“There was a woman with his family,” Koyama recalled. “She had blond hair, and was wearing a white coat.”
“Oh yeah!” Ryo nodded. “Pi and I wondered which one of us she’d go out with if we both asked her.” He flushed and waved a hand as he hurriedly turned to Tegoshi. “Not that we would have.”
Tegoshi shook his head. “It wouldn’t have mattered, she would have turned you both down.” For a moment he flashed his old teasingly cocky grin. Most of the guys grinned back. All except for Masuda, who was digging the toed end of one booted foot into the sand, and not looking up. “Massu?”
Masuda finally glanced up. “I thought we were best friends, but I knew nothing about this. You never once said anything.”
“We never talk about our love lives,” Tegoshi reminded. “And honestly? I was being selfish. I didn’t want to share my relationship with her. Not yet. I was going to later. After we’d spent some time alone together. It was hard enough keeping it secret so the fans wouldn’t know. YamaPi told me once that we could have a private life if we kept it private, and sometimes to do that you couldn’t tell anyone at all.”
Koyama frowned. “Was? You’re not?”
Tegoshi’s jaw worked as he struggled to answer. “Can’t.”
“Why don’t you just tell us at your own pace?” YamaPi said, wanting to give the youngest member time to compose himself. “Meanwhile, let’s have another beer. A bunch of guys bonding while drinking beer and sitting around a fire is a good thing. Yay!” He went to the vehicle, and got out more cans, tossing them to the others until he only had two left. One he held out to Tegoshi. “Go ahead. It might make it easier to talk.”
There were some things he didn’t want to share. Like the night of his birthday, after dinner with his family and a little partying with the guys, when he’d gone to Dani’s for the night. They hadn’t planned for it to happen, it just had, but neither had they regretted it. So he started with after their first date.
……………………
The Near Past
Tegoshi lowered his head to hide his face as the students from her class filed out. Many were adults, trying to get ahead at work or in finding a job by learning more English. There were a few teens that needed the extra help so they could graduate. Once he heard their footsteps fading away he pushed from the wall where he’d been leaning, and entered the classroom. She was alone, sitting at the desk bent over some papers. She obviously hadn’t heard him come in.
For a moment he just enjoyed the sight of her. Her hair was tied back in a sloppy bun, strands sticking out loosely, that one lock falling forward against her cheek. He wished his fingers were that lock, caressing the softly flushed skin. He bet it was soft and warm. Finally he moved forward and put a shiny red apple on the desk.
She glanced up, and he gave a small bow, smiling. “It’s an American custom, isn’t it? Giving an apple to a teacher?”
Dani reached for the apple, and examined it, a flush blooming on her cheeks as she inclined her head in a small bow. “Are you trying to win points with the teacher, Tegoshi-kun?” She looked up at him to see a broad smile on his face. Her own lips twitched, and she quickly peered away, pretending to inspect the apple more closely. When she’d seen him there her heart had sped up.
“Is it working?” he inquired, tilting his head and trying to better see her eyes. “If it’s not I can see if taking you to dinner would work instead.” He smiled at the way her cheeks turned even duskier of a pink. Against her white skin it was like rose petals in cream, and he thought the combination was very attractive.
She lifted her face, looking into his eyes. The corners of her lips twitched, and she leaned forward a little more. “You have that look in those eyes of yours again, Tegoshi-kun.” It only made him smile wider, her declaration. Lifting the apple she sniffed it, smiling, considering whether she should bite into it or save it for later.
His eyes were drawn to the way she lifted the apple, smelled it, and then pressed it to her lips. With a dramatic sigh he turned his back, and went to the windows, looking out for a moment before glancing at her over his shoulder. A smile lit his face. “You got me. My mother wants you to come to dinner tonight.”
She’d been watching him, but now she glanced down, hiding the disappointment his words created. “Oh.” Nodding she started to pack her things in her bag. “Okay. That sounds nice. Will you be home for dinner too?”
Tegoshi inhaled deeply, his heart racing at her obvious disappointment and then hope he’d be there. Last Saturday’s day together had been wonderful. He hadn’t wanted it to end. It was automatic, moving towards her, his teeth worrying at his bottom lip as he made himself stop before he… What? What had he wanted to do? He wasn’t certain. Moistening his lips he spoke softly, “I’ll be there too.”
Her reaction was to nod, but he saw that pale pink flush bloom in her cheeks, and he felt happy for it. He moved forward to offer to help her with her bag, but she rose at that time, and they collided. Tegoshi quickly reached out to grab her arms to steady her, and felt her smaller hands grip his shirt for the same reason. The contact made his nostrils flare, and his heart pound erratically against his ribcage. His gaze was drawn by the way her lips fell slightly apart, his own parting in automatic reaction.
Her skin was soft and warm beneath his hands, and she was a good three inches shorter than he was. It made him feel ‘manlier’ being taller than her, and that was very pleasing. He could stand here, this close to her, all day and not grow tired of it. He hadn’t realized that he was slowly leaning closer to her, his eyes on those dark pink lips of hers, until footsteps at the door startled them apart, and he once again stared out the windows, his breathing harsher, and his hands gripping the sill until his knuckles were white.
What was wrong with him? He hadn’t been raised to be bold like that. What would she think of him now? He hadn’t thought he would be so mindless as to try to kiss her in such a public place, even if they had been alone in the classroom. Tegoshi concentrated on the conversation behind him now. Her voice, at first, sounded breathless and forced, and he felt an absurd surge of male satisfaction at that. The student, a woman who sounded to be in her forties, had forgotten a book she needed for her homework. She didn’t linger, and he was glad of that.
Dani was smiling, gripping the desk’s edge in her hands, trying desperately to sound like nothing untoward had happened. Well, it hadn’t. She wasn’t even sure if it would have. She wasn’t even sure if Tegoshi had been moving closer, or if she’d only wanted him to so she had been the one to move closer! What was she doing? He was the son of a student. The woman trusted her enough to let her into her home. How would she feel if she knew that ‘Sensei Warukaa’ was trying to seduce her child?
The student left with a bow and apology, and Dani smiled and bowed back. She didn’t straighten right away, even when she heard Tegoshi moving closer. She deepened the bow to show how sincere she was in her apology. “I’m sorry,” she whispered thickly. “I have to remember that I’m not in America anymore, and I have to… behave.” She’d been too bold. He was probably very disgusted with her behaviour.
He’d moved to the other side of the desk, keeping the thing between them for propriety’s sake. “I was being bold, I’m sorry,” he said at the same time. Suddenly he chuckled, and straightened. “Ready to go?”
Happy he wasn’t upset she nodded.
……………
The hardest thing had been to leave her and his mother alone after dinner. He went to his room, trying to concentrate on schoolwork, and failing miserably. Finally he gave up, and put on music, finding comfort in it. That’s how it had been for years now. Eyes falling shut he began to sing, practicing some of NEWS’ newest songs. Standing in the middle of the room he shut his eyes, letting his body relax, and sang. He was unaware of the fact that he sang loud enough for them to faintly hear him from the kitchen.
He went downstairs a little later, when he knew the tutoring would be done. As he descended he saw Dani at the door, slipping on her shoes. He stopped at the bottom step, and smiled at her when she looked up, but his smile faltered. She looked saddened, and he automatically neared her. “What’s wrong?” he softly asked.
She shook her head, reaching for the door. “Nothing. Good night, Tegoshi-kun.” She hadn’t known he was an idol, acting in doramas and singing for a group that was fast gaining popularity. His mother had proudly told her when his singing had filtered down, and she’d commented on his nice voice. Why would a handsome young idol want her attentions?
Before he could stop himself he leapt out of the door after her, catching her arm in one hand. What the hell was wrong with her? Where was the warmth he always felt from her? Why was she suddenly distant and cool? His brows were knitted in a frown, and his dark eyes narrowed. “I don’t believe you. Did my mother say something to you?” It was all he could think of.
She looked quickly away. “You don’t even have shoes on, you’ll…”
“I don’t care,” he snapped. Inhaling deeply he spoke boldly. “Dani-chan,” he used her given name for the first time. It was an intimate thing to do, he knew it, but it felt right to say it. “What did she say?”
She faced him, a forced smile on her lips. “You sing very well,” she told him. “I had no idea you were a singer, or an actor.”
His eyes widened. She hadn’t known? She’d had no idea he was a member of NEWS? He felt elation at that. She’d seen him as just himself, and not as an idol. “You have something against singers or actors?” he asked, startled.
“No. I…” What the hell was she supposed to say to him? “I have to go,” she told him, hoping he’d drop it.
Tegoshi never gave up easily or quickly. “Then what is it?”
“Yuya?” His mother’s voice interrupted, and he cursed softly when Dani bowed and hurried away. His mother appeared. “Yuya? Why are you outside without shoes?”
“I was seeing Sensei Warukaa off,” he replied, and entered the house. “I have homework to finish.” He went up the stairs, eyed his homework on the desk, and instead fell on his bed, staring up at the ceiling. He felt like all the progress he’d made getting close to the attractive teacher had vanished without his knowing why or how. Fisting a hand he punched the mattress beneath him, and rolled onto his side.
…………………………………………
The Present
There was a definite chill in the air, and with the sun gone and the sky as dark as the ocean, the temperature had dropped considerably. There was a cold wind blowing off the water, and they huddled in their coats. Cold cans of beer were now held in gloved hands. For a moment the only sounds were that of the ocean lapping hungrily at the sand, and the crackling of the fire as it fed upon the dry wood.
YamaPi tossed another log onto the flames, making them leap and dance high into the air between them. The others, their gazes locked onto the fire before the sudden burst, blinked and glanced up. “So she had a thing against Johnny’s?” he asked, head falling back so he could watch the sparks fly high above them until they disappeared.
Tegoshi shook his head. “That’s what I thought. I didn’t sleep at all that night. I kept comparing how she’d been during our day out together, or in her classroom, to how she’d been when she’d left my place. It didn’t make sense.”
“Most girls would be thrilled to have a Johnny’s interested in them,” Ryo stated.
A fond smile curled up the corners of Tegoshi’s lips, and he cast his friend a glance. “Dani isn’t like most girls.”
“So did you find out why she rushed off like that?” Koyama asked, eager to hear more.
“Yeah, what happened?” Shige prompted. “I mean, obviously you somehow won her over, but how long did it take, and how’d you do it?”
Tegoshi glanced at his best friend, and saw Masuda offer a small smile. That encouraged him. He didn’t like Massu being angry with him. “It took a little longer than it should have,” he frowned, still not pleased that she’d given him the run-around like that. He was the type of man that, when he liked someone, he was focused on her only.
“How long?” Masuda asked, blinking. He knew girls had their favourites in the group. It sounded like this Dani girl had liked Tesshi so he couldn’t understand why it would take so long.
“A few weeks,” he replied, his frown deepening. “It really pissed me off.”
“And obviously still does,” YamaPi teased with a grin, watching the younger male scowl into the flames of the fire they circled.
Blinking, Tegoshi sighed, and then chuckled. “Yeah, it still does. Sometimes I really don’t understand women. To me, if you like someone, and they like you, then you get together. I know there can be some obstacles sometimes, but if you really like each other you can overcome them, or work around them.” He saw some of the others nodding in agreement.
“There were obstacles?” Ryo asked, one dark brow rising quizzically as he leaned forward a little to see Tesshi when YamaPi was between them.
Tegoshi tilted his head, grimacing. “Well… nothing major. I guess she used them as a shield. It almost worked, but she didn’t count on…”
“Your selfishness?” Masuda teased, a full-blown smile on his face now.
Tegoshi laughed, nodding. “Yeah, and her own feelings.”
YamaPi nodded. “It’s really hard for them to argue they don’t like you while they’re kissing you, or for you to believe them.”
Everyone laughed. Tegoshi was grateful that his friends were there. Maybe he should have talked to them days ago. It was difficult, in the darkness of your broken heart where you huddled in misery, to see the pins of light behind you that were just waiting to lead you out with love and friendship.
