Carrie entered the waiting room and immediately spotted Jeanne sitting alone in the same corner she herself had been seated earlier that morning. Sluggishly she allowed her feet to lead her over to the woman.
“Any word yet?” She asked as she approached her mother in-law.
Jeanne slowly peered up from her lap and met Carrie’s gaze. “No, nothing yet dear, but I’m going to assume we’ll hear something soon.” She tried to speak reassuringly as she looked up at the young woman before her and quickly noted her change of clothes. No longer was she in her previously wrinkled slacks and rumpled and torn shirt, instead she was now clothed in a loose fitting shirt that read Oklahoma on the front and a pair of dark gray sweatpants that hung loosely around her hips.
“Did you eat when you were at the house?” Jeanne asked her out of concern, her motherly instincts kicking in.
Carrie nodded her head and lied. “Yeah, I had some toast and oatmeal.”
Jeanne eyed her skeptically and slowly hoisted herself up out of the chair she was sitting in. “You need to take care of yourself, Care.” She said warily.
“I know, I am, I’m fine.” Carrie replied quickly, moving to take a seat in a chair beside where Jeanne had been sitting.
Jeanne spun around slowly and glanced down at her, deciding to drop the topic of the girls health she quickly switched gears. “I take it my kids and Ashley are here now?” She came to that conclusion when she noticed her granddaughter wasn’t there this time.
“Yeah sorry, I meant to tell you that. It must’ve slipped my mind.” She apologized quickly, “Jason and Alyssa said they’d meet us up here in a bit and Ash volunteered to babysit Lyra for a little while.”
Footsteps approaching loudly from behind caused the both of them to shift their attention towards where the noise was coming from. Carrie felt herself sit up straight in her seat when she noticed it was a doctor finally coming to hopefully tell them about what was going on with Kelly.
As the doctor reached the two women his pace slowed until he wasn’t walking anymore but was firmly planted in front of the two them.
“Ms. Underwood…” He spoke cautiously as his eyes sought out for Carrie’s.
Quickly she pushed to her feet. “How is she? Please, tell me she’s alright.” She pleaded desperately.
The doctor put his hand out in front of him as a silent gesture to tell her to calm down as he nodded his head. “Ms. Clarkson is in a stable condition now-“
“Now?” Carrie and Jeanne questioned simultaneously.
He took a deep breath before he spoke again. “Would you two please come with me down the hall to my office, I’m sure you’d like to discuss this all in a more private setting.” He suggested.
Jeanne and Carrie nodded. “Yes, of course.” Jeanne said calmly, reaching out and taking Carrie’s hand into her own as the doctor led them down the long, wide hallway to his office.
He allowed them to enter into his office before he followed suit, securely shutting the door behind him. Slowly he made his way over to his desk as the two women hastily lowered themselves down into the chairs in front of it. Lowering himself down into his chair the doctor cleared his throat and began speaking carefully. “There’s nothing too major that we’re concerned about, we expect Ms. Clarkson to recover from the accident just fine,”
Carrie’s lips tightened, she was sensing a ‘but’ coming on. “However,” he continued slowly, “when she was brought in to the ER earlier this morning she was unconscious, in fact she is still unconscious.”
Both Jeanne and Carrie listened carefully. “So, are you saying she’s in a coma or something…” Carrie asked cautiously.
The doctor shook his head. “No, we don’t believe it’ll be much longer until she wakes up actually,” he paused and folded his hands on the desk in front of him, “but, there is a possibility of some minor memory loss.”
Carrie took a deep breath. “Meaning she may not remember the crash and-“
“In some instances the patient may not even remember family members, or dates, or even their spouses, but sometimes it’s not that bad. Kelly could wake up and remember everything or nothing at all. It looks like she banged her head up pretty good during the accident.” He explained.
Jeanne cleared her throat before finally deciding to jump into the conversation. “About how long does this memory loss usually last?”
“The length of time varies with every patient, so there’s really no way to pin point that. Like I said, Kelly may wake up from this and remember everything. As of now it’s just an assessment, until she wakes up we can’t be completely sure of that, it’s just a possibility.”
Carrie adjusted herself in the chair and sighed. “Did she sustain any other injuries besides her head?” Even though she assumed her wife definitely had to have had other injuries, she hoped there wasn’t anything major.
Slowly the doctor pushed up from his desk and rested his hands firmly against it for support. “Luckily she did manage to come out of the crash more fortunate than others,” he began, circling around his desk and leaning against the side of it in front of Carrie. “She bruised a couple ribs, which isn’t as bad as it sounds, and it’s entirely better than fracturing them. The air bag in the car seemed to do its job effectively and protect her from much damage. In most cases a lot of injuries come from them.” He continued to explain.
Carrie and Jeanne nodded and waited for him to go on; hoping anything else he told them about Kelly’s condition wasn’t too bad. “The impact from the other vehicle making contact with her door did cause a fracture in her left arm, but other than that she seems like she’s going to be just fine.”
She could possibly wake up and not remember anything and that’s fine? Well, I suppose her waking up period is better than her not waking up at all. Carrie forced a smile as she came out of her thoughts and pushed up from the chair.
She nodded politely at the doctor before reaching out to shake his hand. “Thank you.”
He offered a smile back at her. “You’re welcome, it is my job though. You guys have a fighter on your hands.” He gave her hand a friendly squeeze before releasing it and turning his attention to Jeanne.
“Don’t we know it.” She sighed out in relief as she reached out and shook his hand as well. “Thank you.”
He spoke quickly. “Oh, wait. Let me give you guys my card if you have any other questions or concerns.”
Carrie accepted the card and thanked him again. “Thank you, Dr. Coleman. Would it be possible for us to see her?”
He nodded. “Yeah, absolutely, I’ll take you guys up.” He said, moving with them towards the door and allowing them to step out into the hall ahead of him.

Dr. Coleman paused at the door. “I have some of Kelly’s belongings being held with one of my nurses so I’m going to go grab that for ya’ll. You guys can go in.” He encouraged, nodding his head towards the closed door.
“Thanks.” Carrie said, feeling her throat tighten as she watched him walk off.
She felt herself loosen up some when Jeanne’s hand wrapped around her own. “It’ll be okay, dear, I’m here with you.” She gave her hand a soft squeeze before they both stepped forward to enter the room.
The sight of the usually bubbly Texan before them now was enough to break their hearts. Carrie fought back the tears while she continued to hold onto to Jeanne’s hand for support as they inched their way closer to the bed.
“God” Carrie breathed out, feeling the tears now burning her cheeks. Jeanne quickly pulled her into her arms. “Shh, honey she’s going to be okay.” She promised, running her hand gently up down the younger woman’s back.
“The last thing I…” She gasped out, unable to continue as she clung desperately to her mother in-law.
Jeanne slowly released her from her arms and held her at a short distance by the shoulders. “She’s going to be okay, alright?” She repeated, “She’s going to make bounce back from this, do you hear me?”
Carrie forced herself to nod through her tears. “Yeah,” she managed to choke out.
“Good.” Jeanne said firmly, releasing her grasp on the girl’s shoulders before stepping around her and making her way towards her sleeping daughter.
Quietly she approached Kelly from the right side of the bed and took delicately took her hand into her own. “You need to wake up kiddo, this crazy wife of yours is a mess, and she needs you.” She joked, “And your beautiful little girl needs her momma.”
Dr. Coleman entered the room as quietly as possible. “Sorry to interrupt, just wanted to leave this with you, Carrie.” He said, handing over a small zip lock bag with some of Kelly’s belongings.
With a shaky hand she reached out and accepted it, her eyes locking on the platinum band inside. “Thanks.” She croaked.
“I’ll leave you guys. Visiting hours end at five, but I can allow one of you to stay overnight.” With that Dr. Coleman disappeared out of the room.
Jeanne released Kelly’s hand and slowly backed away from the bed. “You think you’ll be okay to stay here by yourself tonight?” She questioned her carefully.
“Y-yeah, I’ll be fine. Are you heading to the house right now or something?”
Jeanne nodded. “Yeah, I need to get some food in me and I can send Jason and them back in my place for a while.”
“Okay. Um, you can sleep in our room; it really hasn’t been occupied since I haven’t really been home much because of work and since Kelly has been sleeping in one of the guestrooms but…” Jeanne lifted a brow at her suspiciously but didn’t ask the question that rose in her mind.
Carrie cleared her throat before continuing. “I set Ashley and Jason up in one of the guestrooms and set up Alyssa in the other.”
“What about you?” Jeanne asked.
Carrie shrugged. “I can sleep on the couch or something if I even leave here. It’ll be fine.” She assured her mother in-law.
“Well, okay then honey. I’ll send my three replacements and I’ll be back again before five.”
Carrie smiled and nodded. “Sounds good, we’ll see you then.” She replied crossing the room and taking a seat in the cushioned chair beside Kelly’s bed as Jeanne moved to leave the room, leaving the two of them alone.
Breathing deeply Carrie nudged the chair closer to the bed before then taking Kelly’s hand into her own as she set the zip lock bag down onto the stand behind where she was sitting. Gently she caressed the top of her wife’s hand with her thumb.
“I’m so sorry baby, for everything…” she apologized quietly, leaning forward and resting her forehead against the edge of the bed.
She lay with her head resting that way in silence for so long she didn’t realize until she was tiredly opening her eyes that she had drifted off to sleep. Slowly she lifted her head and glanced up at Kelly whose eyes were still shut. Yawning Carrie released the other girl’s hand and stood, stretching as she did.
“Carrie?” Her arms froze in mid air as she glanced back down at the bed; her eyes had to be deceiving her.
