Matt jerked awake sometime the next day fighting off a nightmare. He looked around the room, disoriented for a second until he remembered where he was and why. Johnny and Zack were still asleep but Brian and Jimmy were gone. He heard the shower running but didn’t think they were both in there…or they could be, hell he didn’t know what they did when they were alone. He started to lie down again when the door quietly clicked open. His hand darted out and clutched the cool metal grip of the berretta, and when Brian ghosted in he let out a shaky sigh and let go of the gun. Brian gave him a small smile, “Sorry bro, thought you’d still be asleep.” He said quietly. Matt shrugged, “Does it look any better in the light?” he asked. Brian sighed and shook his head, “No, no it’s still bad.” He held up a box of cereal and Matt shook his head suddenly exhausted again and lay back down next to Johnny.
He woke up again when Johnny stirred; immediately he was awake and searching the room for whatever had woken the bassist.
“Chill, Shads.” Jimmy said quietly. He relaxed again and rubbed his face, how could he still be so tired? He shook his head to wake up more and looked up at the window, the sun was still up, but according to his watch it would be dark again soon.
“What are we gonna do?” Johnny whispered. Matt chewed his lip ring, he had a point, they couldn’t stay in Brian’s bedroom forever. Eventually they would either need to get more food or, more likely, the things outside would find them. He sighed and rubbed his temple, he could feel a headache coming on.
“We need to get away.” Matt said looking around the room. Brian slowly shook his head, “It’s everywhere Shads, we can’t just leave Orange County and have everything be okay again.” He said dully leaning back against Jimmy’s chest. Jimmy nuzzled his neck, “He’s right though, we can’t stay here. There are too many of them running around.” He murmured. They all stared at the floor. Inside and outside everything was silent. Matt waited, listening for anything, a siren or a gunshot or a barking dog. Not even the wind disturbed the unnatural silence.
“Big Bear.” Zack said suddenly. His quiet voice made everyone jump a few inches. Once Matt’s heart slowed to a more normal rate he asked, “What?” with only the faintest amount of strain in his voice. The other three looked at Zack curiously too. Zack took a deep breath and started his explanation, “We can go to Big Bear. It’s out of the city, it’s about as out of the way as we can get. Unless you wanna try to get a yacht and sail away from here.”
“It’s the middle of winter.” Johnny said doubtfully.
“Yeah, it is.” Matt said slowly, “It’s the middle of winter and Big Bear is closed.”
“Which means…” Brian started.
“No one’s there.” They finished together.
“Yeah, there’s also a reason it’s closed.” Jimmy said levelly, “The snowstorms block out the road and if you’re not prepared you’ll freeze to death in the night.”
“I would rather freeze to death than become one of those things.” Zack shuddered. Matt agreed, “Then we better get our shit together.”
*~*~*
They worked out what they would need and where they would go until it was too dark in the room to do anything. Brian and Jimmy headed to the basement to get the camping supplies since Brian had most of the gear. Before they pulled the gear out of the various nooks and crannies where Brian had stuffed it the guitarist set his gun down on the cherry wood bar and hugged Jimmy. They were taking a huge risk, the road to Big Bear could be snowed out like the drummer said or the things outside could be up there. He had a fair amount of guns and ammunition, but not enough to hold off an attack indefinitely.
Once they had found every little thing that could be helpful Brian hugged Jimmy’s warm body taking comfort from his steady heartbeat. It was a little faster than usual, but compared to his hummingbird beats it was downright lethargic. “Do you think this’ll work?” he whispered, “I keep thinking it over and there’s so much that could go wrong. What if it’s not deserted? What if it starts to snow before we get to a cabin? If the snow’s drifted too high we won’t be able to get through.” He squeezed his eyes shut trying to put a halt to the swirl of nightmares chasing themselves in his mind. Jimmy hugged him tightly and his world slowly leveled again.
“Yeah, but it’s still your best bet.” Jimmy murmured. Brian nodded and closed his eyes, he couldn’t worry about what might happen, he had to worry about what was going on in the here and now. His eyes flew open and his head snapped up and he stared at Jimmy, “Your best bet? Do Not fuck with me right now Jimmy.” He hissed glaring at him. Jimmy’s arm left his waist and instead cupped his cheek, “I’m not going Bri.” He said stroking his cheek with his thumb. Then he pulled his jacket off, his right forearm was wrapped in gauze, the pristine white spotted with red. Brian stared at the bandage blankly and then looked at his face again with the same expression. Jimmy hugged him again, tighter, “One of them bit me.” He whispered, the words echoed hollowly in Brian’s head. Jimmy’s fingers lightly stroked the back of his neck, “It was by the side of the house, I didn’t see it when I came out.” His lips brushed across his temple in a light kiss. Brian pressed against him shaking, the chill spreading through him didn’t abate no matter how close he pressed against his warm body, his too warm body, his fevered body with its too fast heartbeat.
“I’m sorry Brian.” Jimmy whispered, “I’m sorry.” He crushed Brian against him with all the sinewy strength in his body. Brian felt the world shifting beneath him again and this time it went into a free fall. His breathing was quick and panicky and he clung to the taller frame in front of him trying to erase what he had seen and heard. “No.” he muttered, a tremor shook him and he repeated the word. Jimmy kissed his temple again, “I love you Brian.” He murmured. Brian shook his head and pressed his tear stained cheek against his neck, “No.” he whimpered. Jimmy didn’t answer. A ragged sob tore from Brian’s throat and the only thing keeping him off the floor were the strong arms around his waist and shoulders.
*~*~*
By the time Jimmy and Brian came up from the basement the house was filled with shadows. Matt grabbed two bags from Brian who looked even more exhausted than he had going down. Zack and Johnny were also in the kitchen trying to condense all the food they could find into two large duffels. Matt watched Brian with concern, he seemed to be dragging, his movements were lethargic and his skin had a grayish tint. There wasn’t time though to sort through their problems, they had to get out of town before they were discovered and before more snow had a chance to fall on Big Bear. He kept an eye on him for the rest of the day trying to guess at what was wrong. Maybe the stress was finally getting to him, he could feel himself starting to drag as the hours crept by.
Finally it was too dark to see anything and they retreated once again to the bedroom to get a few hours of sleep before they braved the outdoors. Brian curled up next to Jimmy again and buried his head under his chin. Zack snuggled against Matt before Johnny and the little bassist pouted a moment before collapsing next to him grumbling about same places. Zack snickered and pulled him close, something close to a smile flickered across Matt’s face and he made himself comfortable against Zack’s warm body before drifting off.
*~*~*
Jimmy woke up on fire. Sweat soaked his shirt and matted his hair, his arm throbbed painfully in time with the too fast beating of his heart. His muscles were cramping and his stomach twisted menacingly. Hard tremors shook him and his teeth threatened to chatter, pulsing pain from his head flashed red across his vision. Brian still clung to him though, oblivious in sleep of everything. Carefully Jimmy loosened his fingers, he stirred restlessly as Jimmy untangled himself. Jimmy pressed a light kiss to his temple and stroked the back of his neck gently lulling him back to sleep. He lay there a moment longer with his cheek resting on his forehead listening to his breathing slow again and brushed his lips across his cheek one more time before he silently grabbed the gun and got up.
The house was a maze of shadows that his fever turned into demons, he stumbled to the kitchen swatting at them and collapsed on one knee. His body ached, shooting pains came from the bite and traveled up to his shoulder and spread across his chest. The gun was heavy in his hand and he wasn’t sure if he could lift it again. He could just go back and lie down again next to Brian, when they left he would just stay. He shuddered, he wasn’t becoming one of those things, he would probably be completely gone by the time the sun rose. Shakily he stood again, dull yellow caught his eye and he clumsily turned toward it, his mind telling him it was a monster, it was a notepad. Loose pages spotted the small table it was sitting on, it was the various lists they had been checking and rechecking all day. Tripping over his feet he stumbled over to the table and unsteadily scrawled on a free page before he told himself he had procrastinated long enough and staggered over to the basement.
In Brian’s dream the loud Bang was a horde of the things outside trying to break down the wall. He jerked himself awake and looked wildly looking for where the wall was buckling, but the room was quiet. Everything was quiet. Matt, Zack, and Johnny were up and looking around warily too so he couldn’t pass it off as a dream. Without looking he reached over to grab Jimmy’s hand. His fingers closed on air, startled he looked over and his stomach dropped. Jimmy was gone. He reached for his .375 and again touched nothing. He scrambled to his feet and ran to the door, without checking ran into the hallway. Nothing stirred in the house, the kitchen was just as they had left it, but the basement door wasn’t closed all the way. Before he could take a step closer a strong arm wrapped around his waist and jerked him backward. He yelped and landed hard on his tailbone and then other hands grabbed and held him. He struggled with them, he had to get to Jimmy. Matt crouched in front of him and held his arms against his sides, he stopped trying to get away and stared at him breathing hard.
“Stay.” The quiet command sucked the rebellion out of him. Zack whispered in his ear but he didn’t hear, he watched Matt mutely as he grabbed a flashlight out of the junk drawer and cautiously opened the basement door and made his way into the darkness.
Only two stairs down Matt’s nose was assaulted with the poignant stench of warm blood. He swallowed convulsively and breathed through his mouth. He paused at the turn in stairs, two more steps and he would be able to see the entire basement. He closed his eyes and took another step down and paused again. He wanted to go back upstairs, he didn’t want to know. He took another step and went around the corner.
The light hit the dark stain sinking into the cream carpet, bile rose in his throat and he swallowed thickly and took another step down. One after the other he went down until he was at the bottom, smaller stains speckled the carpet where he stood. He kept his eyes on the ground in front of him as he stepped forward, the cloying smell grew thicker with every step he took, it coated his tongue and filled his nose. He gagged and threw up, chills racked him and he stumbled back a step. His eyes never left the carpet. He stood there, frozen, unwilling to look up and unwilling to run back up the stairs.
He finally took a step forward, and another, and another, until the cream carpet turned to burgundy. He dropped heavily to his knees and at last flicked his eyes up. Jimmy’s face wasn’t anything like they showed in the movies or wrote about in books. Even in death his face looked tortured, not serene, the neat hole above his left eye yawned darkly. His eyes were almost close and his lips were parted the tiniest bit as if he was about to draw another breath. Matt’s stomach rebelled again and he clapped a hand over his mouth, the chills came back. He still looked alive, his face was paler than usual, but it still looked like life was there just beneath the surface.
When the bout of nausea passed he cautiously removed his hand and stared at him, waiting. Waiting for him to sit up and laugh, waiting for him to take a breath, waiting for his eyes to flicker. Waiting.
He reached out and gingerly ran his fingers down the side of his face, his skin was clammy, the beginnings of stubble were rough under his fingertips. His fingers traveled down to his neck and rested lightly on his pulse point. Nothing. His body was still beneath his fingers. He drew his hand back and sat there again, waiting.
His fingers reached out again and finished closing his eyes. When they were a tear slipped from the corner. Warm wetness cut down his own cheeks as he brushed his friend’s hair off his forehead, “Why, Jimmy?” his fingers stroked down his jaw line again and pushed a lock of hair behind his ear. He waited for his answer but Jimmy stayed silent. “Why, Jimmy?” he whispered again. He sat there with him, both silent, just running his fingers down his face.
When the room began to lighten with grey dawn he clicked the flashlight off, Jimmy still hadn’t given him an answer but he needed to get back upstairs. Leaning over he pressed a gentle kiss to Jimmy’s cool forehead and then reached over to take the gun from his limp fingers. There, a flash of white in the gloom. Carefully he rolled his sleeve up some, white gauze spotted with red. He unraveled the bloody bandage slowly, swollen red flesh dimpled by bloody holes that looked remarkably like the dental molds they did at the dentist office. Finally, Jimmy answered him. “Fuck, Jimmy.” He whispered thickly. He pulled the gun from his hand and leaned down again pressing his lips briefly against Jimmy’s. “Bye, Jimmy.”
Before he left he pulled an old throw blanket off the back of the couch and covered Jimmy’s body and then he hurried up the stairs. His three other friends weren’t in the kitchen anymore so he went straight to the bedroom. He softly called to them and then stepped in. Brian sat on the floor with his knees against his chest, his eyes were red and puffy and pain twisted through him again. Zack and Johnny were next to him, neither were asleep though they were lying down, watching him with dull eyes. Matt closed the door behind him and walked the rest of the way in and kneeled in front of him. “Bri, Brian.” He reached up and brushed his hair off his face, his throat closed again. “He…he didn’t abandon you Brian.” He whispered. Brian blinked slowly and lifted his head and then nodded, “I know…he showed me.” More tears slid down his cheeks. Matt gently wiped them away, “We’ve gotta get out of here Brian.”
Johnny and Zack sat up slowly, “We’ll start putting stuff in the car.” Zack announced in a near silent whisper. He took the berretta Matt had run out of the room without and they slipped out of the room. When he got up Matt took his place next to Brian and wrapped an arm around his shoulder. Brian let go of his legs and instead wrapped his arms around Matt’s waist and pressed his cheek against his shoulder.
A/N: I won’t lie, I cried. And as soon as I told myself to suck it up, it was all fake, Linkin Park’s “Leave Out All the Rest” started playing on my Itunes and I started crying again. :`(
Be strong kids! It’s what Jimmy would want! Thanks for reading and reviewing. ^_^
Matt: Yay! I didn’t die!
Zack: Yay! I didn’t die!
Jimmy: Goddammit.
Brian: Ha! Zoooombieeeeee! Ahahahaha!
Johnny: That’s right, kill off the comic relief. Who taught you how to write?
