STEFAN.
Stefan arrived at school feeling nervous, scanning the corridor for signs of his music partner. If he didn’t show up…
“Hey” came a quiet voice from behind him.
With a sigh of relief Stef turned around and saw Brian, looking up at him with those huge green eyes. He wasn’t wearing a skirt today, or nearly as much make-up, but Stef couldn’t help but find him beautiful.
“So what are you wearing for our performance?”
Shit. Stefan had totally forgotten he was supposed to bring something to wear for their project. “Sorry I…”
“Nevermind,” Brian interrupted, rummaging through his school bag and producing a silver-lined, black bowler’s hat. “You’d better wear this, I wouldn’t want to look like a freak being the only one dressed up. Let’s get going.”
BRIAN.
Brian couldn’t wait to get to music. He struggled to stay awake during maths, spending most of his time staring around the classroom, catching Stef looking at him a few times. As soon as their eyes met, Stef’s darted back to the front. Brian smiled.
The bell rang and everybody scrambled for the door. “Ready to take this show on the road?” Brian asked, approaching his partner.
Stef looked terrible. Brian could tell he was nervous.
“Look… we don’t need to dress up if you want. I just thought it’d make it a bit more interesting, but… I can understand if it’s not your thing.”
“No, it’s not that. It’s just… I haven’t heard you sing, I don’t even know if you’ve got something planned!”
“Well,” Brian said, looking up at the clock. “You will never find out if we don’t get to class.”
***
Mrs. Jennings insisted on the students performing in front of the whole class and Brian asked that he and Stef going last, to ensure a lasting impression.
The pairs who went before them all performed dull, almost choir-like songs each with one singing and the other on the piano. No guitars, xylophones, not even a triangle. Brian yawned and rolled his eyes, making Stef giggle quietly. It was almost their turn, Brian grabbed Stef by the arm and led him out to a spare classroom.
STEFAN.
Walking into a small, empty music practice room, Stefan wasn’t exactly sure what he was doing there. “Here” Brian said, shoving a piece of paper into his hands. “My lyrics, if you want to know.”
Stef looked down at the paper and read the title; “Nancy Boy”? he asked.
Brian smiled over his shoulder. He had started unbuttoning his shirt and taken off his tie. “Yeah, I think you’ll like it.”
“Wait, why are you taking your clothes off?”
“I’m not,” Brian answered, turning around. He had only undone the first few buttons on his shirt and had replaced his dull brown blazer with a beautiful silk vest. “Well, that’s a lie, I’m about to take my pants off so if you wouldn’t mind…”
It was then Stef noticed he was staring again. He could only just see a part of Brian’s chest, but it looked so smooth and soft, just like the rest of him. “Oh yeah uh sure.” He said, turning around.
Seconds later, Brian jumped up, and grabbed the piece of paper in Stef’s hand. “Let’s go!”
It was then that Stefan realized he hadn’t read any of the lyrics. He sighed, put on his bowler hat, and followed him back to the music room.
BRIAN.
Brian and Stef walked into the music room, met with wide-eyed expressions from their classmates and teacher. Along with his vest, Brian had also substituted his daggy greys for some tight blue sequined leggings he’d found at an op shop.
“Oh, nice um costumes boys,” Mrs. Jennings said, nervously. “What are you uh, doing for us now?”
“I’m playing guitar and Brian will be singing.” Stef answered.
Mrs. Jennings sighed. “Yes Stefan I can see that. What’s your song called?”
“Nancy Boy.” Brian replied. A few people giggled and the teacher shifted uncomfortably in her seat.
“Ok well, when you’re ready.”
Brian waited for Stef to sit down before giving him a nod. He was a good guitar player, Brian couldn’t help but be impressed. His long fingers carefully placed along the neck of the guitar, so much concentration in his eyes. Brian smiled and faced the class.
STEFAN.
‘Oh please be good, please be good, please be good’ Stef thought to himself as he strummed the opening chords of, what he supposed was now named, Nancy Boy. He looked up and for the first time really saw that Brian was wearing. Oh god, he looked good. Better than yesterday. The leggings strangled his legs, his vest showing off his small hips, his perfect figure. Stef shook his head, trying to concentrate, just as Brian started singing.
“Alcoholic kind of mood, lose the clothes, lose the lube…” Brian started.
Stef’s eyes widened as he continued to play. This was not what he had in mind.
“And it all breaks down at the role reversal, got the muse in my head she's universal, spinnin' me round she's coming over me…”
Despite having no idea what the song was about, and even feeling slightly horrified this was also his project, Stefan couldn’t help but be enchanted by Brian’s voice. It was beautiful, smooth.
After another minute of playing, Stef was completely immersed in the song. He was amazed that Brian could write lyrics to music he’d only heard a couple of times. More amazed at the perfection with which he performed. It was obvious the class didn’t know what to think, but none of them could take their eyes off the beautiful singer, Stef was one of them.
The song ended to a dull silence, rather than polite applause like the ones before it. Brian grabbed Stef from his chair by the hand and bowed, forcing him to do the same, then lead him out of the still silent room.
“That was great!” he exclaimed, reentering the practice room he’d turned into a dressing room.
Stef didn’t know what to say. It had lasted all of four minutes, but all he could remember was everything in slow motion. Playing guitar, Brian singing, Brian’s tight pa-“
“So what did you think?” Brian asked, excitedly.
“It was great, I don’t really know what to say.”
“It gets better!” Brian grinned, holding out a piece of paper. “Did you get one of these?” It was an assignment sheet. “We get to write a whole bunch more! Look, we have two months to compose 10 original songs to be performed for assessment. Wow I love this school.”
Stef should have been as excited as his partner was. Afterall, he was always complaining about his creativity being limited at such a boring school, but something was bugging him. “Does it say we have to stay in our same partners?” he asked.
Brian’s face dropped as he took off his vest. “You… don’t want to be my partner anymore? Why?”
“Oh no, nothing like that.” Stefan tried brushing it off. “I was just… wondering.” Damnit Stefan you can control yourself. Yes you find him attractive, very attractive, but that doesn’t mean you can’t work on an assignment together.
“Great,” Brian smiled, untucking his shirt from his leggings, revealing a blue, foot-sized bruised around his ribs.
Stef gasped. “Is that… from yesterday?”
Brian looked down and quickly covered himself up. “Yeah.” He replied, looking at the floor. “Look I uh, never really thanked you for helping me yesterday. It’s just… complicated.”
“Why?”
“It’s not important. Look, I’m really psyched to get going on this project, are you doing anything after school?”
“No uh, yeah sure that’s fine. Look, I’ll let you get changed.” Stef replied. He needed to get out of that room. “I’ll see you after school.”
