okay.....so this chapter....I don't know what I was on when I wrote this chapter X3
I think I have say it was a few nights of no sleep and trying to stay up with lots and lots of sugar. XD I'm not really sure, cause I mean.... come on. 4,560 words!! ^.^
Anyway, hope you like it.
She didn’t remember much of the flights, just the bustle of getting off, making sure she had her luggage, and then picking something to eat and making it to the next line in time. On the plane, most of the other passengers either slept, watched the in-flight movie (some old drama movie she’d never heard of that they played on each flight), or other personal interests. Nothing really peaked her interest, so she just watched as the sky turn from pink and purple, to twilight, to deep blue-black. Up until she fell asleep she had been watching the clouds drift by around the plane out her tiny window.
There had been one incident. She remembered looking down at the clouds when they suddenly opened up to a view of the ocean some odd thirty thousand feet below them. She went to the bathroom, with the door open (claustrophobic), to sit and slow her breathing. The male flight attendant walked by and went to shut the door unconsciously and Scarlett had to throw her hands out to catch it. The man looked down surprised and squatted to ask if she was alright. She had told him she needed a minute away from the windows and the cramped seating. He left for a minute and returned with a bag for her to breathe in and some water. She looked up and took the items and thanked him. She saw the small jump his body made when he saw her lips and she knew it wasn’t from him thinking she was a true beauty. She looked back down biting her lip and said in a low voice that she’d go back to her seat in a few minutes. He had left her then but every time he walked past her after that he’d look over and stare. She’d gotten tired of people staring at her as she attempted to read one of the books she brought along and went back to staring out the window this time at the stars.
She woke up when she felt the plane leaning into a descent. She looked out the window guessed they were landing in Amsterdam.
Just then a ding sounded followed by the Captain’s voice. “Ladies and Gentlemen, we’re beginning our descent into Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport. We’ll be landing in a few minutes, so sit back and relax, and thank you for flying Monarch Airlines.”
Sighing she turned to the man beside her and asked, “Excuse me. Would you happen to know the time?” The man was wired from drinking too much caffeine during the first part of the flight. He looked at his watched for a moment and whispered “9:17”
She thanked him and turned back to the window. They were almost twenty minutes late arriving. Depending on the wait time in between flights would determine if she had enough time to stop for breakfast or have to wait for lunch. It had been over ten hours since she’d last eaten. As if waiting for a cue, her stomach let out a small gurgle.
She stood to get her bag from the overhead compartment, muttering an “Excuse me” to her neighbor. Once back in her seat, Scarlett rummaged through her bag, her hand skimming the surface of her Zune. She paused for a second debating whether or not to listen to some music to pass the time. Normally is she woke up she couldn’t go back to sleep, no matter how many hours she slept. She pulled a large bag of peanut butter M&M’s and her Zune out of her bag, zipped it back up and stored it under her legs. She turned her mp3 player on, put her ear buds in, and opened the bag in one continuous motion, popping the first candy in her mouth as she leaned back in her seat and turning towards her little window as she waited for the first song to start playing. She smiled as the familiar screaming and wailing of Aiden’s ‘Knife Blood Nightmare’ met her ears.
After the plane had landed it took almost fifteen minutes to leave her seat and make it to the entrance of the tunnel and another five to find someone that spoke English to guide her to the luggage pick-up. She grabbed a pretzel and hot chocolate from the nearest vendor and proceeded to the next waiting line. After finally boarding the plane, twenty minutes late, and waiting another ten minutes, they were finally underway.
Over the next hour and a half, she flipped through her music, listening to Aiden, My Chemical Romance, A.F.I., Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Tokio Hotel, H.I.M., Within Temptation, The Rasmus, Nightwish, Rammstein, The Used and some 90’s techno. Halfway through a bouncy tune, she decided it wasn’t in her taste now and switched back to Aiden. When the plane finally landed it was 11:53 a.m. She stopped and pulled her cell phone out and called the number the man gave her. When someone picked up she asked for Tilo, the manager, and explained what happened and that she’d be a little late. Tilo told her he completely understood and didn’t blame her and said to call him whenever she got there. She hung up and proceeded to the luggage belt. Was it just her or did it seem to drag and take forever? She shrugged and waited. About five minutes of waiting and her luggage appeared. Hauling both big cases off the belt she wheeled them towards the front doors. She stopped outside and waited for a cab to become free. When the opportunity arose she jumped and stuffed her bags in the trunk and showed the cab driver the address.
After he started to drive she leaned back and pressed play on her Zune, turning the volume down to the level of background noise. She stilled wanted to be able to hear what’s going on around her. After about fifteen minutes of driving and ten more minutes of traffic, she finally reached the office. She thanked the driver and paid him, throwing in extra for a tip, and removed her luggage. She looked up at the building. My, it was tall!!
A group of teenagers, five hip-ly dressed guys, passed her and walked into the building, giving her curious glances. She must look like a stupid tourist. Shaking her head she pulled her phone out of her pocket and called Tilo back. He told her he’d meet her in the lobby. After putting her phone away she hurried to a bathroom and proceeded to change and freshen up quickly. She pulled on a pair of black and red pinstripe pants and a black long-sleeved button down shirt and her heeled boots. She quickly brushed her teeth and hair parting it on the right and fluffing it. She folded her clothes and set them in the case along with her black bracelet, and arm warmers, replacing them with a simple thick silver bangle. She did a quick check of her eyeliner and applied some light brown to her eyelids, a tiny bit of blush and some balm on her lips. She really didn’t have time to do the works so she settled for simple.
Zipping everything up, she wheeled everything back to the lobby. Standing at the desk was a tall man, in his mid-thirties at latest, with black hair and a blonde chunk where the style said serious business. He was staring at his watch and the front door. When she came into view, he stepped forward and smiled saying, “Welcome. You must be Scarlett. I’m Tilo, the band’s manager.” She smiled and nodding replied, “Yes I am. Thank you. Sorry for the delay. We had a delay in the flight and traffic on the over here was bad. And I wanted to freshen up before you saw me messy headed with M&M’s on my breath.”
Tilo just smiled, laughed and shook his head, “Not at all. I’m really glad you came on such short notice. I was wondering if you were just going to say no when I talked to you the other day.”
Now it was her turn to shake her head, “No trouble at all. Actually I’m glad you called. I had just finished school like two weeks before that and was about to go crazy from just sitting around not doing anything. I think the house is sparkling from all the cleaning I’ve been doing to keep myself occupied. I don’t like to just sit around. I’d much rather be actively working or helping other than just being lazy and taking up space.” She said as she scrunched her nose up at the thought. Tilo just laughed and held a hand out in front of him saying, “Shall we?” Scarlett smiled and nodded. Tilo was a very easy going, nice man. She could tell she was going to like him.
She turned to get her bags and she heard from behind her, “Here allow me.” Tilo’s arm reached around her and grabbed her clothes suitcase. “Thank you,” she said as she turned to follow him to the elevators. She pulled her makeup case along very gently, not wanting to break or damage anything. Once inside the elevator he hit the number four. As the doors closed, he turned to her and said, “How was your flight?”
She responded, “Uneventful. They played a movie I didn’t recognize so I mostly slept. The last flight I listened to music and ate M&M’s because I knew I wouldn’t have time for a decent breakfast when I finally got here.”
He nodded and asked, “What kind of M&M’s?” She replied with a small smile, “Peanut Butter.” He smiled and said, “Good choice. I didn’t really take you for a plain chocolate type.” She let out a small laugh as the elevator stopped and the doors opened. “By the way, nice earrings.” Shoot she had forgotten to take them out. She smiled and said, “Thanks. I meant to take them out for this but I guess I just forgot.” He smiled and said, “No worries. They show off your personality.” She laughed, “If you wanted personality, you should see the one I just changed out of.” Tilo laughed and stepped out, while Scarlett followed and looked over the room.
The lobby was very nice, but not overly done. The carpet was a nice red, about the color of aged wine, and the walls were off-white. The chairs in the waiting area set nicely against the other colors; the cushions were what looked like black or really dark brown leather, while the wood was oak. The table in front of the chairs was the same oak with a few magazines scattered across the top. A few potted plants were sitting in the corners and one on the small end table between the chairs. A door was off to her far right that she guessed lead back to the offices. A nice half oval oak desk sat to her right, with a woman in her late thirties talking away on the phone. Scarlett didn’t want to seem rude so she turned her head back to the table trying to decipher the magazine covers.
Tilo walked over to the receptionist and started speaking in German. She didn’t understand either of them but the woman smiled at her anyway. Maybe everyone was different over here. ‘Time to test that theory.’ Scarlet turned fully towards the pair and smiled back. The woman’s eyes glanced at her lip but didn’t linger. She looked right back into Scarlett’s eyes and starting talking. The woman asked a question and silence followed. ‘Was she talking to me?’ Scarlett looked at the woman strange and her lips fluttered helplessly. She eyed Tilo and asked, “What did she say?”
“She asked if you wanted to leave your luggage here behind the desk.”
She turned back to the woman smiled and nodded. They wheeled her belongings behind the desk and proceeded through the door. She had been right about the hallway and offices. It was one long hallway about fifteen feet long and three feet wide. There were seven doors, one she guessed lead to a break room, at least one was a conference room, one must be a bathroom, maybe one closet, and the other three must be offices. He started walking down the hall and stopped to open the last door on the left. She had been right about the conference room. Decorated the same as the lobby, it was very welcoming. Four other people already sat at the table, three females, and one other male.
One of the females stopped mid-sentence when Scarlett and Tilo entered the room. Tilo motioned for her to sit in the chair closest to the door. He went and sat beside one of the females, the dark-haired one, and spoke, “Thank you all for being here today. Sorry for the delay but Scarlett’s flight was delayed.” The other four nodded and remained silent as Tilo continued, “Okay now. Let’s get started. We all know why we are here,” he turned to Scarlett, “and I must say Ms. Riddle your portfolio is very impressive. Top of your class. It says here you were the most creative and ‘one of the best students I’ve had in my class in a long time.’”
He stopped and turned to smile at Scarlett, who smiled sheepishly, and said, “I wouldn’t say I was the best in class. I just love to create things. I feel like I’m creating a live painting when I do makeup.”
Tilo returned the smile and looked back at the folder, “Well your instructor seems to think you have an undiscovered talent and has provided a very colorful recommendation on your behalf. The only thing we see that isn’t so great is your age, but that doesn’t matter. Your closer to the guys ages in the band, so that might help with the bonding process. We’re wondering about your talent not your age. It also says here that you worked as a work study student for a small production of ‘Wicked’. What exactly is work study?” Everyone turned to her.
“It’s where a student in college can go out and work in the field of whatever it is they are doing and the school pays them for it. It’s basically a job you do to get your degree and prepare you for the workforce.” They nodded and returned focus back to Tilo.
“Did you enjoy the production?”
She smiled, “Oh yes. I love ‘Wicked’. I know the whole thing by heart. I was mainly in charge of Glinda and Elphaba’s makeup. I’ve never seen so much green in my life till then. Not even at Halloween.” She chuckled as did everyone else. “I also helped with the choreography and singing too on occasion.”
“What is the money for?” he asked curious.
“It’s for whatever you want or need it for. Clothes, food, car payments, gas. Mine went to my extensive makeup collection.”
Tilo and the other certainly looked impressed; Tilo turned back to the others and said something in German. The others nodded. Tilo turned back to Scarlett meeting her curious gaze, and said, “My colleagues and I would like to know if you would demonstrate your abilities. We want to see how well you do on-the-spot.” He smiled apologetically.
She just nodded and said, “Sure. I don’t mind. I will need my makeup case from the front though.” The others seemed pleased by her answer. Tilo nodded at once and motioned for her to follow him. They walked back down the hall to the receptionist. The scene was a little different this time. Everything was the same as before accept now there was five people sitting in the waiting chairs. Scarlett looked closer; they seemed familiar, and it hit her. It was the same group of guys that passed her earlier on the sidewalk.
Tilo turned to her and said, “Please gather your equipment,” and turned back to the waiting men. He begin speaking German to them, motioning towards her once and then to the door. They all together stood and walked through the door. She turned to look at Tilo, curious. He saw her expression and quickly said, “Those are the members of the band this job is for.”
Her eyebrows shot up, surprised and her lips formed an “oh” and she turned back to him saying, “Sorry I didn’t know. You didn’t mention a band name or anything on the phone.”
He gave her the same apologetic look from before saying, “I’m terribly sorry. I guess it just slipped my mind. Anyway they are going to be present for the, uh…..I guess it’s a test. I can’t really think of a better word for it.”
He chuckled and she joined in. “It’s ok. Doesn’t matter what you call it. Who am I giving a makeover to?” Tilo laughed again and said, “Sandra, the dark-haired lady in the room.” She nodded and proceeded down the hall.
Once in the room she noticed they had set a chair up a little ways away from the table but in plain sight so everyone could see. Sandra sat in the seat already waiting patiently. The five men from the other room were seated and watching her, as were the others. The one with black and red hair was giving her a discomforting look. She just hoped they weren’t staring cause of her scar, but they all act like they had been fore-warned. Shrugging it off, Scarlett took a deep breath and wheeled her case over to the side table. She took the plant off of it and set it on the floor, pulled the table out a few inches and heaved the case on it. Dang that thing had either gotten heavier or it was just her nerves.
Her hand rested on the zipper as she turned to Tilo and asked, “Do you want a complete or just the basics?” She turned to look at Sandra, who contemplated for a moment and replied in a thick accent, “Complete if you don’t mind.” Scarlett nodded and turned back to the case, unzipping it and resting the lid against the wall, she pulled the two trays out sideways, and swiveled the stacks back to reveal hundreds of eye shadows. She pulled the bottom casing out and set it on the conference table turning it over four times to be completely open. She turned back to the original casing and pulled the Velcro-ed piece down and laid it on the conference table as well, taking out a packet and zipping the side back up. There were a few whistles and murmurs from all around her.
Tilo just chuckled, “I can see what you mean by ‘extensive’.”
Scarlett turned to towards him and stated, “I don’t have a complete set. I’m still working on getting some more varieties of colors.”
She pulled a clean hair bow off her wrist and went around Sandra to put her hair up. She walked back to the case and pulled out what looked like a long piece of fabric and laid it around the woman’s shoulder’s clipping it to her shirt. The woman gave her a questioning look and she replied, “It’ll help if there’s fallout from any of the makeup. So it doesn’t mess up your clothes.” The woman smiled and nodded. She torn open the packet and drew out a moist cloth. “Makeup remover,” she stated before she got any questions. She proceeded to clean the woman’s face and fanned it dry really fast. Scarlett turned to Sandra and asked, “Do you have your own foundation and powder or know your skin type and color?” Sandra nodded replying, “Dry and ivory.” Scarlett nodded and turned to her foundation case, grabbing a matte foundation that needed no powder and a bottle of moisturizer and a clean sponge. She proceeded with the moisturizer then the foundation. She stepped back to see the effect the foundation played on her skin. It worked perfectly.
Talking to dark-haired woman, Scarlett said, “I’m going to do a casual look; something that you could wear to work, on a date, or just out in town. Is that ok?” The woman smiled and nodded.
She then turned to the case looking through colors trying to decide colors. Sandra had dark hair and eyes so she decided to do gold, brown, a little silver. Turning back to the case she found a matte gold, a lovely bark brown, and matte silver with a little bit of shimmer. She patted gold all over the woman’s eye lids up right above the crease angling it out a bit. Next she took the brown and blended it into the outer corner of her eye, giving her a smoky effect. She lined gold under her bottom lashes about half way over, and a little brown on the corner of the bottom lash line. Then she took the silver and using very little blended it with the gold on the inner corner of her eye and bringing it down to the bottom lash line on the other half, blending along the way so it was very light. She took in Sandra eye for a moment while screwing the lids back on the containers. She put those away and grabbed a white for highlighting her eyebrows and put a little on the silver that made her eyes pop open.
Next she reached for brown eye liner and black mascara. After those were on she turned to the blush, bronzer, and lipstick. A nice shade of brown worked perfectly for the blush, and the bronzer added a little color to her face. Lipstick would be to bright or too dark and the woman had a nice pink tint to her lips already, so Scarlett just reached for a berry gloss and applied it evenly on her lips. Stepping back she speculated her work. Happy with it she reached around and let the woman’s hair down parting it on the right and running her fingers threw it to add some volume. She unclipped the cloth from Sandra’s shirt, handed her a mirror and stepped back to wait for her response.
She stared into the mirror for a few moments stunned. Thinking she did something wrong she opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by Sandra’s comment. “Oh my goodness. You definitely have talent to pull off gold as a casual wear color. Very well done.” She then dropped the mirror to face the others. Scarlett turned to the others to see their responses. Many mouths dropped and eyebrows shot up, clearly impressed.
Tilo was the first to speak. “Very nice, Ms. Riddle. If you would pack your things up and wait in the lobby while we talk it over.” She nodded and smiled saying “Thank you all, again, for letting me have this opportunity.”
After everything was packed securely and her brushes thoroughly wiped, she wheeled her case down the hall and set it back by her other belongings. Her stomach gave a slight gurgle, which she frowned at, wishing she’d had time for a decent breakfast. Oh well she can get lunch soon, but it depended on how long they were going to take to talk. Sighing she opened her carry-on and pull out the M&M’s again and turned to the chairs to wait. She picked up a magazine, not really reading it even though she could, but to mainly look at the pictures.
When she started her second magazine, the door opened and everyone filed out. The four other people, including Sandra went to the elevator and left. Sandra smiled at her one last time before the doors closed. Tilo and the five other guys stood by the door. She tossed the magazine back on the table and stood, twisting her candy closed. One of the guys, the shortest one, snickered at that. She ignored it and continued to stare at Tilo. His face was full of joy which gave her hope. She bit down on her lip as she waited for the verdict.
“Well I guess congratulations are in order.” A wave of shock overtook Scarlett. “We agreed you are qualified for the position and talented enough for it.”
Still a little hesitant, she said, “So….. is that a yes?”
Tilo laughed and responded, “Yes Scarlett. It’s a yes.” Happiness washed through her as she let her head fall back breathed a sigh of relief. Tilo and the other just chuckled. She started forward to shake his hand saying, “Thank you.”
He simply nodded and said, “It was a pleasure interviewing you. Now you said you haven’t had anything to eat yet. Do you want to get something and get to know the guys? We can go over the specifics while we eat. ” She nodded but asked, “Is there anywhere I can change? I kind of want to get back into my comfortable clothes.” Tilo smiled and nodded. “Just down the hall second door on the right.” Saying a quick thank you she hurried to change. Once in the bathroom, she decided not to ruin a new set of clothes and put on her flying clothes. She rubbed her finger over the brown eye shadow to lighten it to a tan shade and added a touch of black on the outer corner. Once everything was folded and put away, she left the bathroom to join the others. When she entered the room, she heard a gasp come from the male group but paid it no attention.
She went to her other belongings and pulled out her black and blue messenger bag. When she stood up, two of the guys had walked over to her, both blonde but one had a mix with brown. The mixed one walked up to her and stuck his hand out, “Hi I’m Strify. It’s nice to meet you. This is Shin. Please don’t mind him he just doesn’t like to speak English very much.”
She nodded and replied, “It’s nice to meet you. Don’t worry about the English part. If I’m here long enough I might be speaking German for you. I started learning a bit over the last week.” Strify laughed and they both smiled. Shin grabbed her clothes case, and Strify grabbed the makeup case, she slung the carry-on over her shoulder. When they got to the others, Strify introduced her to the other guys; the shortest one’s -the one that laughed at her candy incident- name was Kiro, the other two were both tall dark-haired, the long-haired one’s name was Luminor, and the last one with the black and red hair’s name was Yu. She thought these were all strange names but didn’t say anything.
They had to take two trips to get everyone downstairs. Scarlett was in the first group. She saw the look on Yu’s face as the door’s shut; distrust and judging, probably about how she got her scar and getting it wrong. She didn’t let it bother her as she rode down and walked outside. The sun was directly overhead emitting warmth the same degree as her happiness. When they were all together, they got into a sleek, black car and drove to a restaurant; Scarlett chatting happily with Kiro and Strify ignoring the looks from Yu.
