Jimmy eyed the two demons warily, “Okay, how’s this gonna work?” he asked looking between them. The two glanced at each other and then gave him a toothy grin and leaped into the air and shot toward him. Jimmy put his hands up to block his face and two strong hands gripped him under his arms and suddenly he was airborne. He dropped his hands from his face and opted for wrapping them around Vengeance’s neck in a stranglehold while the ground dropped away from him dizzily. “I’m gonna kill you, I swear I’m gonna kill you both!” he shrieked hiding his head in Vengeance’s shoulder while he cackled.
They flew for awhile but Jimmy’s grip didn’t lax, mostly because every now and then Christ would pull on his leg making him squeal and kick which sent both demons into a fit of giggles. He was bracing himself for another such pull when Vengeance pulled up hard and hovered in the air. Jimmy shuddered and squeezed his eyes shut tighter, “Please tell me it’s not a plane.” He whimpered. “No.” there wasn’t a trace of humor in Vengeance’s voice and he hesitantly raised his head and looked around the sky was actually a very pretty blue but the ground was still a way too far down for him to enjoy that view. He buried his head in Vengeance’s shoulder again shuddering, “What is it?” he made sure he had a tight grip on the demon just in case he thought it would be funny to drop him a couple hundred yards. “Angel blood and demons.” He said tersely. And then he did the thing he was hoping he wouldn’t. He dropped into a dive and Jimmy focused on breathing and not wetting his pants.
If he’d had any ground to stand on he would’ve jumped when the tree leaves brushed his feet. Soon after the solid safety of earth was beneath him and he collapsed to the ground on rubber legs and unhesitatingly kissed the damp soil. “Oh, I’ve missed you.” He whispered sprawling out so as much of him as possible was touching the unyielding ground. “Stay here and stay quiet.” Vengeance ordered. Jimmy looked up and watched him fade to a shadow and disappear silently into the trees. Another shadow circled him and he slowly pushed himself to his knees and wondered if asking a question would be considered too much noise by the demons. He decided he would wait for Vengeance to come back before he did anything but breathe. The circling shadow suddenly became solid and Christ grabbed his wrist in an inhumanly strong grip and pulled him forward. “Come on, something’s happened.” He said a little panicky. Jimmy staggered to his feet and tried to keep up with the quick demon that had a death grip on his hand.
He didn’t know how far they went, all the trees and underbrush looked the same to him but he knew they weren’t just running in circles when the pungent stench of burning trash and something else permeated the air. “What is that?” he asked breathlessly wrinkling his nose. “Demons.” Christ answered not even winded. Finally he dropped his hand and Jimmy’s momentum took him into a small area where the trees had been scorched and the stench of burning garbage was almost choking. In the center of a scorched circle lay a bloody angel. Vengeance was darting around him more shadow than solid making a high chirping sound. Jimmy approached cautiously until he realized the bloody mess was Synyster. He dropped to his knees next to the angel and carefully pushed raven strands of hair off his forehead, “Oh no. No, no, no, no.” he whispered. He pressed his fingers against his neck and felt nothing. He leaned over and listened for breath and swallowed hard when he heard nothing. The two demons were no longer flitting around him but crouched near him watching Synyster. “Okay, you guys know more about angels than me, is there something? Anything else we can check, do?” he said shakily. Vengeance made a low cooing sound and carefully ran his fingers down Synyster’s arm. Christ hopped over and made the same sound and licked the gash on his head. A rasping growl weakly gurgled out of him and Jimmy thought he would cry. “He’s still alive.”
“Not for long.” Vengeance whispered. Jimmy nodded and stared at the angel helplessly, “How do we help him?” he looked at the two demons hoping they had something. Christ licked his head again and nuzzled his cheek when he growled again, “Only healers can fix this.” He whispered licking the wound again. This time Synyster didn’t growl but a gurgling sigh kept anyone from panicking. “Are there any healers in Dimmur we can trust?” Jimmy asked. Vengeance shook his head forlornly, “If they help him Lucifer will find out and kill them. Dimmur doesn’t have many healers as it is, we can’t afford to lose any.” Jimmy carefully took Synyster’s chilled hand in his own, “Okay, what about a hospital? Can you guys fly him or teleport him or whatever to a hospital?” He figured doctors were the earth equivalent of Dimmur and Eldur healers. Vengeance gave him gave him an exasperated look, “And what are we going to tell them? Humans can’t know about us and no earth doctor knows how to set a wing. They’d have to call in a veterinarian as well. And,” he added before Jimmy could tell him to piss off, “nothing on this plane can help him. Any staples or stitches or anything they might put in him would just make him sick and in this state that will kill him.” He leaned over and licked a couple of deep punctures in the arm Jimmy was holding. “Those look like teeth marks.” He said dully. He was out of ideas and he knew Synyster was fading fast. Vengeance licked the area clean and whimpered, “They are. Angel blood is a treat for demons.” Jimmy shuddered and lightly squeezed Synyster’s hand.
“What…what if we.” He stopped and licked his lips but the two demons were looking at him hopefully so he plunged ahead with his idea. “What if we steal a healer from Eldur? Well not steal, how about borrow? Can we borrow a healer from Eldur?” He knew how crazy it was as soon as the words left his mouth but it was out there now and he couldn’t take it back. The two demons stared at him, “You want to “borrow” an Eldur healer? How are you going to make them help one of the Fallen?” Vengeance said shaking his head. Jimmy rubbed Synyster’s hand to warm the skin, “I know it sounds impossible—”
“Not sounds, is.” Vengeance interjected.
“—but do you think they’ll help if we tell them he’s the only way to keep Lucifer from storming Eldur?” he finished. Christ looked up and swallowed nervously, most of Synyster’s face was clean and he could see the painful swelling blackening his ivory skin. “It might work Vengeance.” He said softly, “The worst that can happen is they’ll run back to Eldur and tattle.” He looked down at Synyster forlornly, “And Synyster will die and Shadows will lose himself in madness and probably kill the rest of us before someone cuts him down.” Vengeance licked his lips and looked from his lover to Synyster, “We need to do it now.” He said shakily, “he’s not going to hold out much longer.” He and Christ stood and the air began to shimmer to their left. “If you see Shadows, run.” Vengeance said before they ducked into the portal and left him alone with the dying angel.

Vengeance’s POV
The human was absolutely insane, but his insanity could be the thing that saved everyone. Literally. If Lucifer successfully stormed and conquered Eldur with Shadows it would throw everything off balance. The Dimmur and earth spheres would collide and merge killing millions in both spheres. The wild animals in Dimmur were not meant for the earth plane and could easily kill any human or animal on the plane. Not to mention the demons. Lucifer would probably set the loose on the earth plane to slaughter anyone that survived the initial merge and the Dimmur animals. He shuddered, he and Christ enjoyed a good blood bath every now and then but the blood wouldn’t stop if Lucifer had his way. It was much more fun to harass the humans and make their lives a little more difficult every day.
“We don’t even know where the healers are.” Christ whispered tensely pulling him from his thoughts. Vengeance kissed his temple, “We’ll find them. We have to.” He murmured. “They have to be somewhere close to the Avengers,” he shuddered and felt an answering shudder from Christ over the bond they shared, “because they get hurt all the time in training and in the field.”
“So we just have to find the Avengers and wander around until we see an unoccupied healer, steal them away, try to convince them to save a Fallen, and then send them back and hope they don’t send a fleet of Avengers after us. Sounds fun.” He laughed shakily but Vengeance was glad for it. The blood he had cleaned from Synyster’s wounds churned uneasily in his stomach. They skimmed over the ground as shadows searching for anything that could be an Avenger training field or healer’s hut.
“There Vengeance, what’s that?” Christ took the lead zipping toward a building that had a warm feeling coming from it. Vengeance sped up to catch Christ and slow him down, “Careful!” he scolded gently. He didn’t know what he would do if he stumbled into a room of Avengers. Christ licked his cheek and settled under his wing, he felt much better having his smaller lover close. Cautiously they crept toward the squat round house. As they drew closer they faintly heard someone humming, they shared a quick look and darted forward. Avengers didn’t sing.
They easily slipped in the open door and slithered across the floor. Vengeance could feel his and Christ’s hearts fluttering chaotically. This had never been done before, not even when they fought openly did any side capture others off their plane. The woman was tending to an angel with a deep sword slice in his arm. He didn’t seem to happy about it and sporadically glared at the open door as if he were waiting for someone to appear. Christ reached over and took his hand. They had to move now, if an older Avenger showed up they would know where they were immediately. It would only be a few moments more before the young Avenger smelled them. He felt sick and his hands were numb. Christ quivered next to him and on a silent count to three they darted forward and grabbed the softly singing woman.

Jimmy’s POV
He wasn’t sure anymore if Synyster was still alive but he tried to talk to him and kept holding his hand rubbing it every now and then hoping he wasn’t comforting a corpse. The relative quiet of the woods was shattered when the air shimmered and a screaming woman came hurtling out followed by the two demons. Too shocked to move he sat there and watched her with wide eyes and she scrambled to her feet and actually pulled a short sword and swung it at the demons. The blade flashed brightly and Vengeance howled with pain. That high sound got him to his feet and he jumped in front of the wounded demon, “Don’t!” he held up both hands and turned his head away hoping it wouldn’t hurt too much when she cut his fingers off. He cracked an eye open when he didn’t feel any pain and found her glaring at him. Her long black hair was mussed and tangled in a crown of gold filigreed leaves. Gemstone eyes glittered dangerously; the gold of her eyes matched the soft hued tunic she wore. He let out a soft breath, “Look, sorry for the rough treatment, but we’ve got an emergency.” He said shakily. She still had the sword raised and it didn’t look like she would be putting it down anytime soon. Her eyes darted to Synyster’s prone form and then narrowed. “Call one of your own. Or, don’t bother wasting the energy, every Avenger in Eldur will be here soon enough.” She said icily. Jimmy swallowed, “I know you’re pissed, I was too when they picked me up outta the blue but really, but honestly, this is for the good of Eldur.” The woman’s eyes widened and before she could say anything else Jimmy jumped into his explanation.
“Lucifer has finally lost his mind. He’s created a new Berserker and this angel is the only way we’re gonna get through to him. If you don’t help him soon he’s going to die and we’re all gonne be up shit creek without a paddle.” The sword faltered and then lowered, “A new Berserker? That’s madness.” She said faintly. “That’s what everyone’s been trying to tell him but he’s not listening anymore. Please, you’ve gotta help him.” He pleaded. The woman stared at him and looked down at Synyster before glaring at the two demons still hiding behind him. “What you’re telling me is absolutely insane.” She said with a hard look and then unease flashed in her eyes, “And that might be why I believe you.” She pointed her sword again, “Keep those things away from me.” She ordered. Jimmy turned and found the two demons glaring back at her. “They won’t mess with you.” He promised grabbing their arms and tugging them a few feet away. Vengeance nuzzled his chest without warning and he looked down at him surprised, “What’s that for?” he asked. Vengeance blinked, “You risked your life for me; had she been a colder healer that strike would’ve been fatal.” Jimmy smiled and kissed his temple, “I told you I would.” Christ nuzzled Vengeance’s neck and then pulled his arm up and gently ran his tongue over it. The green eyed demon whimpered quietly but that soon quieted as the blood slowed.
“How are we gonna find Shadows?” Jimmy asked after a moment of watching the woman work on Synyster. Vengeance and Christ pressed a little closer to him, “Lucifer probably has him pinned up somewhere. We’ll have to go back to Dimmur.” Vengeance said. Christ shivered and made a small sound. Jimmy nodded faintly, “Go back to Dimmur and I’m sure that involves avoiding angels and demons that will kill us on sight and then figuring out just where Lucifer has Shadows. I think I’d rather avoid Avengers.” He muttered. They waited in silence, Jimmy hoping the two demons were coming up with creative ways of sneaking into Dimmur and rescuing Shadows.
When the sun was beginning to sink below the horizon the healer stood up. She looked exhausted but she gave a short nod when Jimmy looked at her questioningly. The two demons flitted over to Synyster before he could stop them and the healer jumped away with a small growl. They looked up at her with a hint of apology but were soon consumed with checking over Synyster. Jimmy walked up a little more wary, the demons might’ve been able to dodge her sword but he wasn’t so fast. “You can’t move him until at least sunrise, I would prefer you wait longer. His wing is fragile still and he lost a lot of blood.” She shot a glare over to the two mewling demons who ignored her. Jimmy nodded gratefully, “Thank you and I’m really sorry about the rough pick-up.” He said earnestly. The woman nodded again, “If there truly is another Berserker loose it was well worth it.” There was an underlying threat to her words and Jimmy nodded mutely. Christ and Vengeance finally settled and cuddled against Synyster with twin sighs. Jimmy smiled and then faked an annoyed look, “So where am I gonna sleep?” he asked with a raised eyebrow. Christ burrowed his head further into Synyster’s side and Vengeance raised his head for a second before he snorted and lay down again. Jimmy rolled his eyes, “Little shits.” He muttered loud enough he knew for them to hear. Christ’s body shook and Vengeance cheek lifted in a smile. The healer watched the back and forth impassively. “You get along well with demons.” She observed. Jimmy shrugged, “It’s kinda like people who have poisonous snakes as pets. Once you get past that whole “they can kill you with one bite” thing they’re kinda cute.” The woman stared at him in disbelief, “You are a strange human.” She finally said. This time Vengeance’s cackle quieted the night sounds of the forest and startled the healer. Jimmy thought about throwing a stick at him but didn’t want to hit Synyster. “Go back to sleep lil’ cobra.” He cooed. Now they both snorted and snickered and drew up their wings in what Jimmy recognized as their sleeping positions. Synyster’s lips moved and both Vengeance and Christ sat up in unison and leaned closer. Jimmy ran over and leaned over worriedly, “What’s wrong? What’d he say?” he whispered. The healer leaned next to him looking the angel over with an expert eye. Vengeance pressed a quick kiss to his neck, “Yes, we’ll find your rabid coyote.” He murmured.
The healer shot a look at Jimmy who smiled almost sadly, “Yeah, your cuddly pit viper.” He whispered. Synyster’s lips quirked into a tired half smile. “What are you talking about?” The healer hissed. Jimmy straightened and the demons drew their wings up again sheltering themselves and the sleeping angel. “A long conversation last night.” He said vaguely. The healer stared at him a moment longer, “Well, at least he’s conscious enough to remember that. It’s more than I was hoping for.” Her lip curled, “Keep those things in line, he doesn’t need any more trauma.” Jimmy bristled, “They would never hurt Synyster. The bites are from other demons.” He snapped. The woman took half a step back, “I was talking about the way they’re sleeping, his body is still fragile and his wing is weaker than china. I’m well aware they had no hand in the attack, I can feel the auras of the other demons.” She clarified slowly. Jimmy backed down immediately, “Oh, ah, sorry.” He said meekly. She gave him another long look and then shook her head and the air shimmered as she opened a portal, “An odd human indeed.” And then she stepped through the portal. As soon as she was gone he heard a giggle and then Christ’s muffled voice, “I think Jimmy is ready to fight a healer.” There was another giggle and Vengeance continued the conversation, “Soon he’ll be ready to fight a flightless bird.” They both broke into a fit of muffled laughter and now that the healer was gone Jimmy tossed a stick at both of them. “Flightless birds aren’t anything to fuck around with, emus kill like three people a year and ostriches are just mean and ugly.” He countered. Their small bodies continued to shake with laughter.

Shadows’ POV
The thumping didn’t stop, it had multiplied and he couldn’t get to it to stop it. He was furious. All around him he could see hearts beating see the faint whitish outline of blood surging through veins and arteries and he wanted it all to stop. He would tear them apart and stop the infernal beating once and for all. He gripped the bars and snarled as pain shot through his hands. Now he was angrier. They were all going to die; he could feel the stickiness on his arms and face from the last batch of hearts and pulses. To his right came the flutter of dozens of pulses, the frantic noise drove him absolutely mad. They came closer and with every step the pace increased until it was nothing but thunder in his ears. He roared absolutely enraged, the faint outlines of veins and arteries brightening to a solid white. Something sharp raked down his wing and he spun around searching for the pain and saw only more of the frantically beating hearts. The thunder behind him was suddenly louder and he whirled around again. The thunder was in his prison with him. He roared again and it scattered but he could see the orbs of light making the thunder and he was going to stop them all.
oOo
