‘You’re Joshua Bell!’ Louisa said staring at Josh hard.
‘Yes I am’ Josh said holding out his hand ‘hi nice to meet you’
Louisa laughed and shook his hand.
‘Likewise’ she said ‘god I can’t believe how long it took me to figure out who you are and if I’d been paying attention I’d have figured out who you are hours ago!’
‘Well I didn’t drop many clues’ Josh said.
‘Maybe not but anyone that has even a passing interest in the violin knows who you are. God listen to me I sound like a damn fan girl forgive me? I’ve talking unintelligible shit all day’
‘Don’t worry about it’ Josh said in amusement as Louisa turned a bright red ‘you’ve not been talking shit by the way. It’s refreshing to talk about something other than violins and performing’
Louisa slapped her forehead.
‘Oh god and I asked you about your love life!’ she exclaimed ‘Oh god I’m far too nosey for my own damn good’
‘No you’re not you’re pretty good actually’ Josh said stabbing a piece of tortellini ‘you sensed that I didn’t want to talk about it and dropped it’
‘Y’think?’
‘Yeah I do thanks for that’ Josh said ‘’it was entirely a better thing to do than stay at home and drink another three pints of genuine Russian vodka’
Louisa giggled at his Russian accent.
‘Three pints?’ she exclaimed in surprise ‘Christ how are you still walking? If I walked past that much I’d be pissed as a newt’
‘Yeah well that’s a question my youngest sister Rachel asked me this morning’ Josh said dryly ‘I haven’t drunk like that for twenty years and my head has been telling me all day maybe I shouldn’t drink like that for another twenty years’
‘If you’re going to drink that much again it’s probably best to have company’ Louisa said ‘not only is there someone to call 911 if you pass out there’s someone to keep you company as you get pole axed’
‘Sage advice’
‘Nah just drinking etiquette’ Louisa said with a grin ‘maybe it’s just a girl thing. As soon as we turned old enough to drink all my girlfriends and I made a pact none of us would go out drinking alone’

‘When was the last time you picked up your violin?’ Josh asked as their meal progressed.
‘Aw shit six months maybe’ Louisa said ‘in that time I’ve been from Kentucky to Pennsylvania the down to Alabama and Florida. I don’t play unless I have time to dedicate to a particular piece of music. I’ve been working so hard I haven’t had the time or energy to play’
Josh took a deep breath.
‘This might seem a bit forward but d’you want to do some revision together sometime?’ he asked.
‘You’re inviting me to jam with you?’ Louisa asked in surprise.
‘Yeah why not?’ Josh said ‘you can show me your prized violin and I can show you my Strad. You said earlier you want to see one in the flesh’
‘Oh I’d kill to see a Strad in the flesh’ Louisa said with a sigh ‘and yours is famous. My university violin teacher went on about it all the time. I studied with him after I graduated and when you bought it, it was like the Red Sox winning the World Series again’
‘Really?’
‘Uh huh yeah’
‘Have you ever given lessons yourself?’ Josh asked curiously.
‘Oh yeah all the time when I was back in Oz’ Louisa said ‘I got my two eldest nephews into the viola and my third eldest nephew into the violin. Those three are set on making music their lives and plan on auditioning for the Melbourne Symphony once they graduate from university in a few years. Everyone wants to play for the MSO back home it’s the orchestra to play in if you’re good enough’
‘So how come you didn’t go into music yourself?’ Josh asked curiously ‘you clearly have a passion for it’
‘Yeah but my passion for animals was bigger’ Louisa said ‘and my Mum always said to me when I was growing up ‘always follow your heart however stupid it may seem because in the end that’s what tells you what is right’ I could’ve got into music I had the entrance scores but I’m happiest when I’m around animals. Just like I’d imagine you’re happiest when you’re playing your Strad’
‘So d’you have any animals yourself?’
‘Yeah I have now I’m settled in New York’ Louisa said ‘a mix bred cattle dog mutt puppy from the ASPCA shelter I temped at when I first arrived in New York and a Burmese cat. I want to start an aviary too but that’s once the renovations on the house are finished birds are sensitive to stress and hearing the bangs and crashes of tradies on the job would stress them out too much’
‘So where do you live?’
‘Long Island’ Louise said ‘great area just over the east River and not far from queduct racecourse where I’m hoping to get some permanent work’
‘D’you come into Manhattan often?’
‘Yeah most weekends’ Louisa said ‘New York is still new enough to me that I’m still going to all the Broadway Shows and going to the museums. I usually stay the weekend but now I have the cat and dog I only come down for the day. I don’t know anyone here who could dog and cat sit for me so until I do I have to limit my Manhattan visits to day trips’
‘You didn’t answer my question by the way’ Josh said with a wry grin.
‘Oh and what was that?’ Louisa asked mopping up the Bolognese sauce on her plate with a piece of garlic bread ‘damn you for distracting me Bell’
‘Well excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me’ Josh said with a laugh ‘the question was d’you want to get together and as you put it ‘jam’ sometime? Now that I’ve finished touring I have a lot of free time til mid October at least’
‘Sure! Where, when?’ Louisa said brightly.
‘Well if we exchange numbers we can work out details later’ Josh said ‘give it a few days so I can rest up from the tour and we’ll talk’
‘I have a suggestion’ Louisa said ‘how about say next Saturday we meet at Paolo’s in fifth Avenue at eleven AM so I can drop off my viola? After that we can do lunch and discuss whose better Paganini or Dvorák’
‘Neither one is the better’ Josh said ‘both are brilliant composers....end of discussion’
Louisa rolled her eyes.
‘Ha ha’ she said ‘you know what I mean we can discuss the deep and meaningfuls of classical music. I only said Paganini and Dvorák because they were the first two violin virtuosos I could think of’
‘And the two ultimates’ Josh said with a grin feeling himself warming to Louisa with every passing minute.
‘You’re a very interesting person Joshua Bell’ Louisa said after finishing her meal and sipping her lemonade thoughtfully ‘you intrigue me’
‘I do?’
‘Yeah. Normally when I meet people in the park it’s no more than hi, bye or how’s ya day luv? But with you I’ve been going off like a frog in a sock. I’ve never spent half a day speaking to a total stranger before it’s nearly nine o’clock now and we’ve been talking like old friends’
‘Maybe we were in a past life or something like that’ Josh said in amusement.
‘Ah you never know it’s entirely possible’ Louisa said twirling a length of her auburn lock around her fingers ‘but you’re definitely an old soul. Maybe that’s why I feel comfy talking to you. My Nanna reckons I’m an old soul and she says old souls seek each other out’
‘We didn’t exactly seek each other out’ Josh said in amusement ‘I was just sitting on a park bench and you were looking for a place to take some photos’
‘Yeah true, maybe it was fate were both sitting on that park bench at that time’ Louisa said thoughtfully ‘I dunno I never paid much attention to fate or destiny or any of that metaphysical shit. Definitely weird’
‘A good weird I hope’
‘Of course definitely’ Louisa said with a wink ‘I’ve been picking your brain and peppering you with so many questions because I admire you professionally. My university teacher always went on about you and I’m always watching clips of your performances on YouTube’
‘Ah a stalker’ Josh joked.
Louise rolled her eyes.
‘Ha ha’ she said dryly ‘very funny. I don’t even know where you live. I would’ve thought the first lesson in Stalking 101 was knowing where your victim lives’
‘God she’s gorgeous’ Josh thought as Louisa flicked her ponytail over her shoulder and rested her chin on her hand ‘seriously you’re beautiful....maybe it was fate we met’
‘Helloooo?’ Louisa said with a giggle snapping Josh out of his reverie by waving a hand in front of his face ‘wakey wakey’
‘S-sorry I tuned out a bit there’ Josh said sheepishly.
‘Am I that boring?’ Louisa said with a raised eyebrow.
‘No no no, hell no totally the opposite’ Josh said ‘so totally the opposite. If this place didn’t shut at ten I would sit here and talk to you all night’
Louisa went pink.
‘Are you flirting with me Joshua Bell?’ she said coyly.
‘Am I that obvious?’ Josh said going bright red.
‘Just then you were’ Louisa said ‘I don’t mind though. You’ve got a kind soul’
‘A kind, old soul?’
‘Yeah that much I can tell, I may not know you that well but the one thing I can tell about you is that you’ve got an old kind soul. The sort of person who would go to a nursing home and play your Strad for the senior citizens and who would hold up traffic to let a mother duck and her ducklings cross the road’
That made Josh laugh out loud.
‘I have actually done those two things’ he said ‘neither for a long time I’ve been too busy touring and composing’
‘Composed anything recently?’
‘Nah I don’t bother when I’m on tour’ Josh said ‘I never have the time. I usually rehearse, perform a set of shows then travel onto the next destination’
‘No wonder you look exhausted’ Louisa said in concern ‘even the rock stars take a break in the middle of their tour’
‘I’m not a rock star’
‘In the classical world you are’ Louisa said ‘well all the girls I went to university with think so’
‘Oh really?’
‘Yeah even the viola players thought you were king shit’
‘King shit? Hmm I’ve never had anyone describe me as that’ Josh said with a laugh ‘had shithead a few times mainly from my sisters’
‘Yeah but siblings are supposed to call each other names’ Louisa said in amusement ‘Fred, Kurt, Leisl and I tease each other all the time’

Josh and Louisa stayed at Pieces til ten o’clock when the shift manager kicked them out.
‘Look here’s my number give me a buzz and we’ll further organise next week alright?’ Louisa said to Josh after scribbling her cell phone number on the back of her dinner receipt ‘I never turn my mobile off and I’m a night owl so if you ring or text late I’m likely to be up’
‘I look forward to catching up’ Josh said carefully folding the piece of paper and putting it in the pocket holding his Visa card ‘I’ve got a few things to do this week but I’ll probably give you a ring on Thursday sometime’
‘Sounds great’ Louisa said brightly flashing him another dazzling smile that made him feel all gooey inside ‘well it was great to meet you Josh seriously. Personally and professionally. I’ll have to ring my old university professor after next week and tell him I jammed with you he’ll be impressed’
‘Well tell him I said hi’ Josh joked as a taxi pulled up.
‘Ha ha I’ll hear from you in a few days alright?’
‘Sure thing have a safe trip home’
‘You too’
Louisa got into the taxi and with a cheery wave disappeared into the hustle and bustle of Manhattan traffic. Josh stood rooted the spot a feeling of total and utter disbelief washing over him.
He had picked up.
