Thomas was just about to type something, but a flash of light blinded his eyes underneath his helmet. He felt a cool breeze around him, and when he concentrated, there was the faint smell that comes out after the first summer rain. Slowly, the light became less bright, and Thomas opened his eyes. First, he didn’t see a thing, just whiteness. But he could feel moisture on the skin of his arms, and when he suddenly saw where he was, he could only gasp.
The tiny drops of water on the hairs of his arms were a cloud. He had been flying through a massive, white cloud, and the sun was shining upon it, creating a light so intense it was no wonder he had been blinded by it.
He looked below him. Miles and miles of peaceful meadows were about one hundred metres down. When he looked closely, he could see rabbits that were running alongside his shadow, that was thrown on the ground, slowly moving over the low hills of the landscape. There were birds flying above him, beautiful, majestic birds unlike any Thomas had ever seen before. Their wings only moved now and then. The wind was enough to keep them afloat.
This wasn’t a program. It couldn’t be. It wasn’t real, it was far too beautiful to be real, but it could not have been created either. Not in the Grid, at least. It was impossible.
‘What do you think?’ a gentle, masculine voice asked right next to him. Startled, Thomas instinctively twitched and moved away from it, and in the program, he really did move. Unable to comprehend where he was and what was happening, he looked beside him and saw the avatar from before, but a million times more detailed. He was dressed in what seemed to be leather, and his face was concealed by the golden helmet. There were colourful lights visible on his helmet now, and they were flashing in all colours of the rainbow.
Thomas wanted to type, but couldn’t find his keyboard, and suddenly realized he might be able to speak aloud.
‘How did you do it?’ he yelled, and heard himself, not in his room, but in the place they were now.
‘No idea,’ the voice replied. A smiley appeared on his helmet.
Thomas tried to turn around and made a spin of 360 degrees. He could hear a waterfall in the distance. The air was slightly damp on his face. And the fresh smell... His body felt strange, because it was really flying. Unaware of what he was doing, he cried a few tears in pure delight.
‘It’s unbelievable!’ he yelled, spreading his arms. ‘It’s magnificent! What the hell did you do? How did this happen?’
The avatar was still smiling quietly, and he watched Thomas from above when he took a plunge towards the meadow where he let the blades of grass touch his fingertips, soaring just a few inches above it. Thomas, completely caught up in what he was doing, spent minutes flying up and down, chasing rabbits and just laughing and yelling to himself.
‘Hey,’ the avatar said after a while. ‘You wanna see more?’
Thomas looked up. ‘Yes!’ he answered. ‘Yes!’
‘Come on!’ the avatar gestured.
The landscape changed, the atmosphere changed. Flying over the meadows in a steady pace, Thomas could see the hills evolve into mountains, and feel the temperature drop. Snow, real snow, was gently falling on his skin, and when he opened his mouth, it flew in. He felt the ice melt in his mouth, and the sensory overload made him dizzy.
He saw the guy with the golden helmet make a dive into a gorge deep below him, and without a single moment of hesitation, he followed him. Deeper and deeper they fell, and the world became darker. The walls of black rock they were flying through were decorated with diamonds, some of them as big as beach balls.
The gorge became more narrow with the second, until the sky had become invisible, and the ground had closed itself above them. Before Thomas had the chance to feel claustrophobic inside the tunnel, a spiral of burning magma lighted up to show them the way, moving at their speed, always a few steps ahead of them. Its colour changed every second, going from light to dark and back again, as if it was blood going through a vein. And before he even had the chance to prepare himself, they were out of the tunnel and inside a valley filled with more flowers than a human being could ever imagine. Thomas had never known his eyes were able to process so many colours at the same time. He looked over his shoulder. The mountains were distant already, and a thunderstorm was raging in them.
‘We were just in time,’ the avatar said. ‘Come on!’
He gently took his hand and led him down to the ground.
