Part 3

James:

It had been a couple of months since me and Sam had told Ben, Danny and Cam about us. Everyone was fine with it, which was what I was hoping for. The last thing Sam needed was everybody hating on us. We were still taking things slow. The furthest we’ve gone with anything is a slight make-out session. I’m happy to take things slow with him if that’s what he wants, but I can’t help but feel as though we’re more like friends with benefits. Hopefully that will change tonight, though.

I heard a knock at my hotel room door. I jumped off of my bed and answered it, smiling when I saw Sam stood there. He beamed back at me and I stood aside for him to enter. I watched him as he went over to the bed and sat down, bouncing as he did so. He noticed that I was looking at him and started meddling with the bed sheets, avoiding making eye contact with me. Was it meant to be this awkward? I headed over to the bed and sat next to Sam, placing my hand on his and guiding his face around so that he had to look at me.

“Are you sure you want to do this?” A flicker of uncertainty showed in his eyes for a moment, but he nodded anyway.

I leaned forward and kissed him softly, his lips pressing back against mine with the same tenderness. This carried on for a few minutes before I decided to make the next move. My hand started to work its way up his arm and to his shoulder where I started to brush his jacket off. I was surprised when Sam’s tongue met my lips – he doesn’t usually make that move first. Oh, well. I wasn’t complaining. I opened my mouth to allow his tongue access to mine.

I’d started to unbutton Sam’s jeans when he pulled away. He went to stand by the chest of drawers, breathing heavy. Okay, this was getting ridiculous now.

“You know what? I can’t do this anymore,” I said, trying to keep my voice from showing the frustration that I felt. “It’s obvious that you’re not ready for this yet.”

“I know, I’m sorry. I’d just rather stick to the kissing and making-out.”

“I don’t mean the sex, Sam. I mean us.” He opened his mouth to begin to protest, but I stopped him. “It’s okay. Honestly, I don’t mind the fact that you can’t love me more than a friend,” I lied. “just do me a favour and make sure that nothing’s going to be awkward between us; that we can still be the great friends that we were before all of this.” He looked at the floor and nodded before leaving in silence.

I’d tried to be patient… I’d really tried.
