Chapter 29
Back at Kevin’s apartment, chaos reigned. The gang was arguing about every little thing, all because they were all feeling completely helpless. None of them could stand the fact that they didn’t even know where to start looking for Angel. It all seemed very hopeless. However, when Nick came crashing through the door, looking extremely determined, not to mention happy, everything quieted down. However, the silence only lasted for about 5 seconds, before Nick wambarmbarded with questions, not to mention accusations, because he had left in such a hurry, without giving anyone a chance to go with him. Not that they were particularly eager to be alone with the vampire. Finally it all became too much and Nick growled loudly before yelling,
“Everybody shut up!” The room was once again deadly quiet as they all stared wide eyed at Nick. Taking a calming, if unnecessary breath, Nick continued, “I know where to start looking,” AJ opened his mouth to say something, but Nick simply glared at him before explaining, “There’s a creature, a Brahmaparush, who lies in a cave by the old cemetery. He knows where Joseph is hiding Angel.” Nick looked at the gang as they all started shouting about getting there as fast as possible. How Angel could stand this lot he’d never know. Raising his voice, he once again interrupted, “Think you should know exactly what a Brahmaparush is, before you go charging in there?”
They stared at Nick for a moment before Kevin spoke up,
“Yes, actually I remember reading about them in one of my books. Not exactly a guy you want to surprise.”
Jess looked at Kevin before asking the question they where all thinking,
“Why?”
“They tend to…um…how should I put this…” Kevin rubbed his forehead with his hand before starting again, “You know how vampires drink blood to stay alive?” They all looked at him, the word “Duh!” quite clear on all of their faces, “Well, these guys eat brains to stay alive. And they tend to be quite vicious.”
At this there were Eww-faces all around. Even Kevin found himself pulling a face. Not something he would usually do.
“Alright!” Nick said, “So everyone is clear on the ‘not just barging in there’ part of the plan?” He looked at all the faces surrounding him getting the confirmation he needed. “Great! So here’s what we do.”
The group huddled around the table as Nick explained the plan in great detail, making sure everyone knew exactly what their job would be. The Brahmaparush was a very dangerous breed of vampires, and not one to be trusted, so it was of extreme importance that the group let Nick lead the word. Brahmaparush vampires would just as soon eat humans, as talk to them; however other vampires instilled some fear in them, especially Master vampires. This meant that the gang might see a side of Nick that they might nor particularly like, but it would be necessary if he was to get any kind of information from Fensahuit. Once Nick finished explaining the plan to them, they all moved out toward the cave.
I was starting to lose hope again, even after that little spark I felt a couple of days ago, when I was brought some food. I hadn’t been fed since then. Apparently they wanted to feed me just enough to keep me alive, but not enough to enable me to build up my strength. I couldn’t help but think that it was actually a good plan. It was what I would have done, had en ien in Joseph’s place. A scary thought really. I was realizing how much darkness I really have inside me. I was beginning to understand who I was. There really wasn’t much else to do when you’re chained to a wall. I could understand Joseph’s motivation, a thought that would have scared me before all this happened, but now…now I saw it as a weapon. The fact that I could relate, could actually be the one thing I needed to defeat this vampire. The fact that I understood the darkness that resides inside these demons could be exactly the edge that I had been missing in my previous fights. But all that really didn’t matter much now. As long as I was still trapped I couldn’t use this new knowledge for anything.
Coming to the realization that I could actually more or less understand a vampire’s motives, that I, and probably all humans, have some darkness in me, I couldn’t help but wonder if demons where the same. Maybe, even though they where generally evil, they all had the ability to feel remorse, to love, to be good. You certainly didn’t have to lack a soul to commit heinous crimes. Just think about what some people did without feeling any remorse. Murderers, rapists and child molesters, they where all human, and yet they still had the capability to do those things. I guess good and evil really didn’t come down to whether you had a soul or not. It came down to choices and psychology and environment. The difference between demons and humans must be that the majority of demons choose to be evil, to live by the motto ‘want, take, have’, or they are simply taught to take what they want, without regard to what the world around them might think, while the majority of humans thinks about other people and base their choices on what they have been taught is right or wrong. But where does that put vampires? Vampires were human before being turned, and therefore should be living by the values that they are taught growing up. So why are most vampires evil? It can’t be because all vampires were psychopaths before they were turned. So what is it that makes them loose all inhibitions?
I could feel myself starting to drift off, the lack of food taking its toll. I knew I wouldn’t find my answers today, so I decided that I’d ask Nick if…when…I got out of there. My eyes drifted closed and soon I was lying on the cold stone floor, sleeping restlessly.
