Chapter 30
Thanksgiving evening
****************
James drove straight to the airport without stopping. Where else was he gonna go but home? His mother didn’t want him - maybe she never had. His brother clearly hated him. The only family member who had any time for him was his sister… No, that wasn’t true. His niece loved him. He just hoped they wouldn’t succeed in turning her against him as well.
James was surprised to discover he couldn’t get a seat on a flight to LA until late, not in economy anyway and he couldn’t afford an upgrade. He hadn’t expected as many people to be travelling on Thanksgiving evening. It said a lot about the state of family life in America today that people couldn’t manage to survive more than a few hours in the company of their folks. That he wt tht the only one should comfort him but it didn’t. It just served to depress him further. Finding a relatively quiet corner in the coffee shop he sat down to study his script.
****************
“Aren’t you going to ring James, Darling?” David’s mother asked. “If he’s missing you as much as you’re missing him I’m sure he’ll be waiting by the phone…”
“Sorry, Mom. Was I being that obvious?”
“Only to me, Darling. A mother can tell…”
She patted him reassuringly on the arm.
“We agreed he’d ring me tonight,” David explained. “It’s easier that way… he won’t have to explain…”
“Oh, Darling, I’m so sorry…”
“It’s not your fault, Mom. I just wish he could be as lucky as I am…”
David sighed.
“I don’t think his parents have ever shown him any real affection…”
*******************
James glanced at his watch. He’d promised to ring David but he’d been putting it off. It was gone eleven where David was. The family would probably be going to bed soon. He couldn’t leave it any longer but he wasn’t sure he’d be able to maintain his composure once he heard David’s voice… But he so needed him right now…
If he didn’t ring, David would worry. He’d know there was something wrong and he didn’t want to spoil David’s Thanksgiving too. There was no reason why David should hav suf suffer on account of them.
He wondered what he should say. He couldn’t lie to David. That was out of the question but maybe he could skip the details… No, that wasn’t fair. David would know he was hiding something and he’d just worry all the more…
********************
“That’ll be James,” David said jumping to his feet as his cell phone rang. “I’ll say goodnight, Mom… Dad.”
“Goodnight, Darling,” his mother called after him as David ran up the stairs clutching the phone to his ear, “Sweet dreams.”
“Goodnight, Son,” his father added.
“Did you see his face?” David’s mother asked.
“I most certainly did. I can’t remember when I last saw him so happy.”
“Me too, Dave. I think he’s serious about this relationship…”
********************
“Hey!” David said into the phone.
“She threw me out,” James said without preamble. “Well, as good as.”
“Oh, my God! What happened? Where are you?”
David could hear noise in the background. It sounded like James was surrounded by people. Had he gone to a friend’s house?
“It’s a long story. You don’t wanna hear it,” James began. “I’m at the airport, on my way home… I didn’t want you to wonder where I was…”
“Oh, Baby. Please tell me what happened…”
“Can we just drop it for now, David? I don’t wanna start blubbing into the phone. Ring me in the morning and I’ll tell you everything.”
“Promise?”
“Yeah, promise.”
“I love you, James.”
“Love you too. Bye.”
********************
“Mom!” David shouted, running back down the stairs.
“What is it, Darling? What’s wrong?” his mother said, hurrying to meet him. “Has something happened to James?”
“His mother threw him out. He was too upset to tell me what happened. I could hear it in his voice.”
“Where is he now?”
“On his way back to LA…”
David was close to tears himself. James needed him. He’d promised him he’d be there for him and he wasn’t. They were 3,000 miles apart. He’d let him down. He should never have let him go there alone in the first place…
“Mom, I have to go to him…”
“Of course you do, Darling…”
“I’ll ring for a cab,” his father said. “I would take you myself but after all that wine…”
“Thanks, Dad,” David said, glancing at the clock in the hall, “but I’ve missed the last flight now anyway. I’ll get a flight first thing in the morning.”
“Then we should all get to bed,” Dad said. “We’ve got an early start…”
“If there’s anything else we can do, Darling…”
“Thanks, Mom. I appreciate it… and I’m sorry to spoil the holiday for you…”
“Don’t be silly, Darling. You haven’t spoilt it. We’ve had a wonderful day but it wouldn’t be fair of us to take any more of your time not when James needs you…”
David thanked his lucky stars his parents were so understanding…
********************
James couldn’t concentrate on his script. He’d read the same page three times now and he still had no idea what the scene was about. The single thought dominating his consciousness was how stupid he’d been to turn down David’s offer. It had been a mistake to visit his mother. All he’d succeeded in doing was ruining everyone’ s day and disappointing his family - yet again. Of course, this was one disappointment his mother was unlikely ever to forgive… He couldn’t go back… He knew she’d never welcome him into her home again…
******************
James looked up from his script to glance at the departure monitor to see if his gate had been announced yet. It hadn’t. He scanned the list of flights already boarding to see if he could work out by a process of elimination which gate his flight would be assigned. The first six listed were the red eye flights to the East coast: New York, Boston, Washington, Philadelphia, Newark and Baltimore. He couldn’t imagine they’d be full. Who’d want to fly back East straight after Thanksgiving? Anyone who’d gone to the trouble, not to mention the expense, of flying all the way out to California would surely spend a couple of days at least…
He looked again. The Philadelphia flight had already started boarding. It was due to leave at ten arriving at six tomorrow morning. Why go back to LA? Fuck the cost, he could go and spend a couple of days with David and his family after all - assuming the invitation was still open. He couldn’t very well ring to check - they’d all be asleep by now. He’d take a chance. One thing was certain: they couldn’t make him any less welcome than his own mother had…
