‘Jade, just get back on and take him over one of the little two and a half footers, you aren’t concentrating enough to be jumping him over near five foot fences today’ said Bob as he gave Jade her morning riding lesson on her horse Kenzo.
Bob was a very skilled horseman, being the hunt master of the local hunt before such sports had been banned and also competing in semi professional showjumping in his youth had made him an equine authority and someone who Jade was more than willing to learn from as he put her and Kenzo through their paces every morning. However on that morning, just three days after she had thrown Stefan out after his infidelities Bob knew his boss and friends head was not together enough to concentrate on landing her horse over fences of such magnitude. She had fallen off three times that morning because she wasn’t paying attention.
‘Okay Bobby will do’ said Jade quietly as she jumped back up on Kenzo and gathered her reins, moving him into a steady trot then cantering a circle before neatly popping him over a small fence set up in the outdoor arena.
‘And that’s where we leave it, come on down you get again and I’ll go cool him off’ said Bob, tipping the dregs of his stewed cup of tea into the sand as he walked over to Jade and her big black horse and took his reins in exchange for the cup.
‘I’ll go put a fresh one in here for you. And once again I’m sorry, I’m trying to listen to what you are telling me, to sit up straighter and slow him more before fences but my mind................it’s still pretty much elsewhere’ said Jade as Bob nodded in understanding. She knew she could talk to Bob about this, he had been left by his first wife under the same circumstances, he knew what those who had been cheated on by their spouses went through, although he was still actually waiting for her to cry properly over it. The rage had subsided and now his boss was just quiet, not sad or happy, not moody or fair, just........very quiet.
‘I’ve told you, there is no need to apologise I know what you’re going through mate. Listen you go fetch me that tea and I’ll hose down blackie here, go on be gone!’ he said, laughing at the way he was such good friends with his employer he could actually get away with ordering her around now. Jade gave Kenzo’s sweaty neck a pat and walked off in the direction to the house to make Bob another tea, shouting to Alicia if she wanted one too. Her blonde head popped up over the big grey mare Ella’s stable door and she said ‘yes please!’ and with that Jade continued into the house to brew up.
Walking in and washing the cup Bob had been using and pulling another off the wall fixture for Alicia she put both cups down and filled them with the required sugar and milk levels (both white, one with one sugar and one with four for her sweet toothed cousin) and switched the kettle on. Instantly a memory flashed through her head of when she had brought the damn thing in the first place. Coming home to find it faulty Jade had got a nasty shock off it when she had tried to pick it up, and it had been Stefan to yank the plug from the wall and make sure she was okay, holding her as he laughed and she wailed at him that it wasn’t funny. Removing his things from her home at warp speed had erased every trace of him being there, but still everywhere she looked she was reminded of him, and how deeply he had hurt her.
Little did anyone know but Jade had spent the last three nights lying in her bed crying, the space Stefan’s body left behind so cold and lonely she couldn’t bear to look at it sometimes. The first night alone had driven her so crazy at just thinking on what had happened right in her bed that the next morning she ordered a new one and took the one she felt tainted by her husband’s deceit apart and burnt it. All bed sheets included and also hired a decorator to get rid of the red colour scheme in there, replacing it for dark purple and white. It was her little sanctuary, and this time she would decorate it as she saw fit without Stefan’s input and had also asked the decorator to pen in doing the rest of the house when he could too; she wanted it to be a reflection solely of her and Jamie’s tastes.
Once the kettle was boiled she poured the teas and took them out to the two thirsty workers, went in to check up on one of the new rescue ponies feet as he stood happily munching the contents of his manger, gave him some fuss and then went back to the house alone to throw herself into some work. Booting up her computer in her brilliant yellow painted office Jade began looking through contracts and files relating to her latest signings and started the monotonous task of printing and copying everything for them as reference. Since the company was so small Jade had no staff, and handled the record label all by herself, from answering phones to admin, to being the one to go and talent scout and offer label places, it was a sole Jade project for now; and something she was glad of as it took her mind off her current situation. Until she read an email of much thanks from the German band she had signed at the weekend; when Stefan had been upstairs banging the shit out of Martha for god knows how long.
Immediately Jade winced, the mental picture she had painted in her head of them in a passionate tryst flashing to the forefront of her mind and making her feel nauseous. She didn’t consider herself the most beautiful woman alive, but even she could see she was about a thousand times more attractive than scraggy looking little Martha. The woman had a head full of messy dreadlocks that Jamie was convinced she’d seen nits dancing in, had a sticky out nose and sunken looking face, and was about as friendly as a stinging nettle. Was he mad?
This was the hardest part for Jade to figure out. Not so much the fact that he actually strayed in the first place, but his choice of person to be adulterous with. If it had been someone as striking as his other ex Hilde she would have perhaps understood it a little better, but this she just couldn’t get through her head at all. Even when he had called and she had actually let him speak rather than hanging up on him he had offered an excuse, one that drove her even more blind with rage when she heard it;
‘She was there, and you weren’t. I felt neglected by you for so long and it just happened, but if you take me back it will never happen again and.....’ Jade didn’t care to know what the ‘and’ in it all was; she just hung up again on him. He was beyond pathetic, and her? If she ever saw that rat faced little skank again she’d slap her ugly face into a pretty one for her; if that was at all possible. It was just at that moment something sent from a part of Stefan’s past was to interrupt her thought.
‘Jade, Interflora just brought these’ said Alicia softly as she came into the office armed with a huge bunch of pink lilies.
‘I swear if he’s sent these.....’ began Jade as she swung around in her comfy leather computer chair.
‘Then I’ll take them home with me, shame to waste nice flowers’ said Alicia, smelling one of them as she handed them to Jade.
‘Okay deal, but if not I keep them! Whoever sent them obviously knows I love pink lilies’ said Jade as she put them of the desk in front of her and took the card from the plastic holder, opening it as Alicia hovered at the door.
‘Is it him?’ she asked her elder cousin, who had just put her fingertips over her mouth and looked a little surprised.
‘No, they’re from Hilde’ said Jade before reciting the letter...........
Dear Jade,
The only thing that comforted me throughout my divorce was that I thought Stefan had left me for the woman he belonged with. As much as I’ve hated you, I never wanted this to happen and I am so sorry he has put you through the same as he did me. We are both too good for him.
Love,
Hilde x.
‘Oh my god, the lovely, lovely woman’ said Jade as she cried a little. She was so deeply touched by the gesture of kindness it had moved her to tears. Not many people out there were sympathetic enough to send flowers to the woman their husbands left them for on finding out the same had been done to them.
‘That’s so sweet of her, and she’s right. You are too good for him’ said Alicia as she came back into the room and lovingly stroked her cousin’s dark blood red hair, kissing her head too.
‘I have to try and get in touch with her, tell her how touched I am by her gesture’ said Jade. And so she spent the rest of the afternoon trailing the internet looking for a contact for Hilde and emailing her a letter of gratitude and then continuing with her work. Jamie was going straight to her grandparents to stay over for the weekend so it gave Jade plenty of time to catch up on every internet related duty she had before heading over to Jo’s house for a girl’s night in with her and Jen.
‘So then dude, how you doing?’ said Jen warmly as she passed Jade a glass of white wine upon her entrance to Jo’s living room, the lady herself coming in behind her with a tray of deep fried Jalapeno peppers and pizza slices.
‘I’m fine, really I am. You know, the way it ended it had just given me so much anger towards him I don’t even feel that upset. It’ll take some getting used to, but I’m okay’ said Jade with a nod as she sipped her wine.
‘Bollocks, come back from denial Jade, and remember when you look like you’ve had about an hours sleep a night since it happened your friends can usually tell that’s the case too’ said Jen, blowing on one of the chillies before taking a careful bite.
‘Jade we don’t expect you to be sat here blubbing into handfuls of Kleenex, because we know that isn’t the kind of woman you are. But glossing over it won’t help you in the long run. It’s best you deal with it now rather than later hun’ said Jo, looking at her sympathetically. Jade knew she couldn’t sugar coat the way she was feeling to them, so drank about half of the glass of wine she had been given and proceeded to open up.
‘Yes; I’m devastated. But honestly the anger I feel towards him does help. I just can’t see what she’s got that I haven’t!’ said Jade, Jen and Jo nodding.
‘That must be tough, I mean god what on earth was he thinking? I mean Martha of all people! Jade, if he’s that stupid you really are better off without him’ said Jen, this time Jade nodding back.
‘I know, it hurts and a part of me still feels love for him. But saying that I think I was always preparing myself for him to do it you know? Not willing him to, but always having my guard up about it, never letting myself forget how easily he could do it to me too’ said Jade, finishing the rest of her wine and holding the glass out to Jo who refilled it for her.
‘You felt like that the whole time and never said anything to us?’ said Jo in surprise, her hand reaching for her cigarettes as her eyes fixed on Jade.
‘Yeah, yeah I did. It was always there, right in the back’ said Jade as she sipped her wine. Jo got up off the sofa she was sat on and seated herself next to Jade, giving her a little hug.
‘He really is an idiot, and there’s no point dwelling on him so I say lets carry on from it and enjoy our evening girls’ said Jo, clinking her glass of Jade’s and then off Jen’s beer bottle. Jade leaned into her hug and felt so lucky. She might have had the one person who betrothed to be true unto her forever break that vow, but she had two people there for her right then who would never leave. And they were worth a million Stefan Hober’s.
Much later that night, 3am the next morning in fact Jade made her way home on shaky drunken and stoned feet, and felt so much better for seeing her friends. Even though the dull ache that hadn’t left her since she found out was still there, she felt renewed for seeing two of her best friends; and glad she didn’t have to look after Jamie in the morning the state she was in. Tumbling into the house and startling the hell out of her dogs Jade quietened them down and carefully went about making herself a coffee, double checking everything was switched off when she was done and padding through barefoot into the lounge. She lay down on the couch after putting her coffee on the table and felt her eyelids grow a little heavy, and the last thing she remembered was staring at the cup thinking ‘ill have a sip in a minute’ before sleep took her into one of the most vivid dreams she had ever had.
She felt a soft hot breeze blowing against her cheek, and when she opened her eyes she was lying in the middle of the dessert in Mexico, where she had gone on a colourful mushroom enhanced trip almost eight years ago. Getting up off the floor Jade rubbed her eyes and stretched, and then almost immediately heard the same noise she would never forget from before, the thousands of hooves pounding towards her in the distance. Standing still and calm Jade watched the line of brilliant white horses growing closer and closer, and held out her hands ready to feel them pass her as before. This time she felt no fear, just the same euphoric rush she had before as the horses grew nearer and nearer, and then suddenly there they were all around her. The noise sounded louder than a thousand machine guns discharging their ammunition, it deafened her, but what she felt as they all swerved past her, neighing and snorting, it was like everything but that moment had fallen away.
She closed her eyes and just listened, until the sound began to die away and the breeze rushing past her slowed, and when she opened them she saw her father standing there. And just like in the original trip she ran to him, feeling his arms wrap around her, so vivid was the dream she could feel his breath on her forehead as he held her close and spoke the same line that had been with her for eight years-
'Some parts of your future can been seen so clearly right now, but you will have to wait years, and face much sadness for them to appear again' he spoke, following with 'You will find out one day sweetheart, one day you will know, and that day approaches you. Soon Jade, soon’ said Stephen.
‘You never said that the first time’ said Jade as she leant into her father’s chest.
‘Said what the first time?’ she heard Jim’s voice say. She snapped her head up and looked him straight in the eyes and at that moment woke up like a shot in the couch, daylight streaming through the open curtains and a sound of knocking coming from the kitchen door. She got up and ran out of the lounge and down the hall to the kitchen. When she opened the back door, the two brown eyes she had looked into in her dream were staring right back at her.
‘Surprise’ he said, smiling warmly at her.
‘You know, I think I already knew you were on your way’ said Jade, pushing the door open wider to let Jim in.
