When Night Falls(Pt30)
As the car raced through the Irish country side, slowing down long enough to take the sharper curves on the road, then speed back up. Joe would dart around any cars that were in his way, narrowly missing a few on-coming ones already.
Phil, at some point, maneuvered himself around Joe and for some unknown reason, buckled his seat belt, then his own. Injury from a wreck at the high velocity that he was driving would be painful, even for a vampire. Phil mused glancing at the rapidly approaching tail lights of another car. He knew better than to ask Joe to slow down, at risk of being tossed out the door, but he did anyway.
“Joe, c..could you slow down?”
His reply came as a fast jerk of the wheel, sending the car into the other lane to pass the one in front of them. Joe stomped on the brake, white smoke billowed behind them, tires squealing on the pavement. Phil threw his hands up to catch himself on the dashboard just as the seat belt locked in place. The car jolted to a stop and the one they were passing sped by with horn blowing.
“Joe…” Phil glared at him.
Throwing the car in reverse, Joe hit the gas pedal and spun the car around and shot forward again. “He began to fade…l..look for another road going west.”
“OK.” Phil replied. “But we need to get to Sav in one piece, not all busted up because you rolled the car.”
“I’m not go…”
“There…right there…road!”
Joe was turning the wheel before they even reached the road. The car bounced over the grassy area until the tires hit the pavement. Phil rubbed his head where he smacked it on the roof.
“Maybe I should have gotten the jeep instead, had I known that we were going to be doing off road racing.”
Joe glanced at him and cracked a smile. “Another time maybe.”
“Do you know where this goes?”
“It’s taking me to Rick that’s all that matters.”
Phil glanced up at the sky, lightening danced through the clouds ahead of them. “And taking us straight to that storm too.”
“Be quiet Phil. I have to concentrate.”
Except for the whine of the engine and the wind blowing by the car, they traveled in relative silence for the better part of an hour. Phil concentrated on his bond with Sav and at the same time thought of what they might be facing when they got there. He knew that Joe wasn’t thinking of that at the moment.
“If it is any comfort, I can feel him better now. So we must be get….”
Joe swerved on the road again, bringing the car to a stop.
“…he’s not there.” Phil finished slumping back in the seat, then looked at Joe. He noticed his tighter grip on the wheel. “Same for you?”
“Yes.” Joe quickly replied leaning forward to rest his head on the wheel.
“Losing it that fast could only mean one thing.”

Steve paced the cold stone floor, thinking of what else he could do that he hasn’t tried yet. Talking to him about anything to keep him awake, didn’t help. After hours of doing that, he slowly became unresponsive. Steve switched to yelling, that proved pointless in the end.
He was going to make loud noises, but the only thing around were large rocks and a lot of small stones. He didn’t want to disturb any of those, fearing he would move the wrong one, causing them all to fall and block the entrance.
Hovering in front of him, Steve cringed when he felt him inching more into his ghostly world of existence. Before they had decided to interfere, they knew how it was going to end, it certainly wasn’t like this.
‘If you come to this side Richard, there is no turning back, no choice this time, no help from us, no gentle push to send you back to that side. It will be forever. Is that what you want? I know for certain that it is not. You have come too far to give up now. Come on Sav you have to wake up, fight it. Reach out to Joe, he is so close now, you can’t give up.’
Steve’s icy fingers touched his cheek causing him to slightly move away. Doing it again, his fingers stayed in contact. ‘That’s it, come on wake up. Get your foot back on that side.’
“Go…awa….sleep…no pain…there…” Sav rasped around his dry throat. His head lulled back slightly, he jerked it forward. “..ahh…han…hands can’t f.feel…”
Steve glanced upward. The tight rope that bound his hands had chaffed his wrist to an angry red, rubbed raw, several cuts had opened from the moving and weight, as small trickles of blood ran down his arm.
‘Joe is coming, you have to help him find you. I know you’re in a lot of pain, but you have to stay awake and think about him.’
“I w..want…home…Joe…where…Kyle…”
‘Then you stay awake.’ Steve said more firmly.
Propping his head wearily on his arm, Sav continued to mumble incoherently. Steve would fill in the gaps with anything, sometimes yelling again when he would notice that Sav was starting to lose consciousness or touching him to get his attention.
‘Hurry up Joe…Phil, he can’t last much longer.’ Steve though as he glanced around the dark, cold area.

The car sat in the middle of the road, the engine idling smoothly, bright headlights shined across the field. The two men inside the car, sat in dead silence, both deep in thought. Phil stared straight ahead, his vision blurred until he blinked. Joe remained slumped against the wheel, tears of frustration pricked his eyes and threatened to fall.
Phil finally broke the silence, tearing his gaze from the landscape. “It’s almost 40 minutes Joe since we felt anything from him.”
”I refuse to think he’s dead.” Joe sat up. “I would know if he were.”
”How do you know that?”
“I just….would.” Joe eased the car forward. “We’ll keep going in this direction, we both felt him strongly to the west. Maybe if we keep going we will again.”

Armand let the guards limp body slip from his grasp, his eyes glued on the massive structure that was ablaze with lights. He stepped over the body and cautiously made his way to the house. He knew that Joe and Phil weren’t inside, instead they were off chasing their bond with Sav around the country side.
Armand smiled to himself. “You will not reach him in time. If you do, you are as good as dead. Fools, the lot of you.”
Stopping in the darker shadow of the gazebo, Armand’s eyes darted to the silhouette that passed by the French doors in the master bedroom. The curtains fluttered in the soft breeze. “Ah…lovely Amber, you shall be mine soon.” Quickly glancing around the grounds, Armand flew up to the balcony, watching her through the sheer white material.

Amber grabbed the pillow from the bed, hugging it tight against her chest, inhaling her father’s scent that mingled with Sav’s fading one that clang to the soft fabric. Fear gripped her stomach as she danced on the edge of Joe’s mind, felt him lose the link to Sav, his ever increasing despair of not getting to him in time.
Turning from the bed, Amber moved over to the shelf lined with photographs.
Placing her fingers on the smooth glass, she traced the faint outline of the two figures in the picture.
“I read that vampires didn’t show up in photos or mirrors.” Kyle came in to stand beside her, looking at the picture.
“I believed the same thing, until I saw them in this one or the times I would watch Sav fuss with his hair in the mirror.” Amber replied softly.
Kyle chuckled. “He still does that.”
“It still drive’s daddy crazy when he does.”
“What were they doing in this picture?” He asked picking one up.
“We were playing a game of football in the field behind de Brabant Castle. Nobody cared that the field was almost ankle deep in water from the heavy rains, they just wanted to play.”
“It doesn’t look like Joe and Dad were very interested in the game.”
Amber smiled at the memory the photo brought. “No, they keep getting distracted by each other. They were on opposite teams and thought it was the American version of tackle football. We gave up on them of finishing the game and let them roll around and play in the mud.”
“They didn’t take it too far in front of everyone did they?”
“Nothing beyond heavy kissing.” Amber giggled. “It was so funny listening to Sav whine about the mud in his hair or watching them to see who would get the upper hand and be pinned to the ground.”
“I missed that week at the castle, bet it was fun.” Kyle said putting the picture back in its place.
“You were in court with a very important case. Sav wanted you there too, but understood that you couldn’t make it.”
“I don’t get many chances to be with the family, see the interaction between everyone.” He picked up another framed picture of a mud covered Joe and Sav. “Between my dad and Joe.”
“You’ll get the chance to.” Amber glanced at the picture.
“This has definitely been some of the craziest years of my life when I found out that Rick was my real father. Coming to terms with it and finding out what he is…vampires….really crazy.”
“Yeah I guess it has.” Amber replied softly.
“I’m looking forward to more of those crazy years.” Kyle gently rubbed her back, then squeezed her shoulder.
Amber turned into his embrace. “There will be more. I’m sure of it.”
“Such a tender scene between my advisories children…so touching.”
Kyle and Amber jumped apart, turning to see Armand parting the curtains and coming into the room. Kyle pushed Amber behind him.
“Who the hell are you?”
“Armand del Rosa, reborn an immortal in 1262 BC at the height of Ramesses II reign.
“Am I supposed to be impressed with that? Doesn’t work. All I see is an asshole that has tried to destroy my family.”
“So much like your father. Do you have the same desire as he, for the lovely Amber?”
“Don’t be absurd.” Kyle snorted.
“What would Beth think if she saw you in such an intimate way as I came upon?” His gaze went to Amber. “You can’t have Rick, so you take the second best thing…his son.” Armand glanced at Kyle.
“You are crazy.” Kyle huffed.
“Come now Kyle..” Armand moved closer to them. “..you can’t possibly stand there and tell me you haven’t entertained the idea of given into your desire for Amber.”
“No I have not, because I don’t desire her. I love my wife.”
“Many mortal men have said the same thing, but in the end, they can’t resist the pull of seduction. The alluring nature of vampire and her beauty, rivals even that of her mother.”
“My mother was never one of us, she…”
“Died,” Armand finished. “Yes..yes I know that. But not before I had my fun with her.”
“What are you talking about? My mother died in a car accident.”
“One that I caused.” Armand countered. “Mr. Elliott was so grief stricken when he reached her car, he didn’t notice the bite marks on her neck. One’s I put there myself when I indulged myself…before the accident.”
Amber stared at him in shock. “You’ve lied to us so much I don’t believe anything you’re telling me now.”
“Would you like to taste my blood to find out if I’m lying?”
“I’d rather rip out your heart.” Amber gritted between her teeth stepping around Kyle to do just that. He jerked her back.
Armand’s smug smile never wavered. “Of course…Rebecca did enjoy herself, the time we were together…brief as it was. Are you a whore like your mother Amber?”
Kyle swung his fist up, intent on punching him in the face. Armand caught his it in mid-air and squeezed. Bones cracked and popped in Kyle’s hand, the pain sending him to his knees.
“Silly boy.” Armand smirked, then grabbed him around the throat. “You, a mere puny mortal will die and join your father in death.” He jerked Kyle to his feet, holding him above the floor.
Amber fought her urge to rush forward and help Kyle as he tried to drag air into his lungs. He dug his fingers into Armand’s wrist, hoping that he would let go. His eyes darted behind him, to the figure that slowly emerged from the shadows. The glint of light bounced off the gleaming metal of the sword as Nick swung it up in an arch, ready to strike.
“No...” Amber said in a calm, even tone. “.. you are going to die Armand.”
Armand stared intently at Kyle. “You are aware…the muscle reflex in my hand could crush his windpipe. Isn’t that right Nicholas?”
