Chapter Thirty ~ Finally
~*~*~*~
Kurai walked down the street sipping on hot lattes as we window shopped at some of the boutiques. The ride from the suburbs to the city was different. I wasn’t sure it was from the taxi driver's horrible driving skills or the insane drivers that drove like they owned the road. I couldn’t decide which it was.
My cell phone began to chime Britney’s Touch of my Hand and I saw it was my mom. I had forgotten to return her call. I flipped open my phone and placed it up to my ear. “Hey mom! How are you?” I would be doing better if you would return my phone calls. You worry me. “I know mom, I’m sorry, I’ve just been busy being overseas you know? Places to see, people to meet…” “I hope you’re having fun…” “Of course mom. I love it here.” “I thought I saw you today,” “Where at mom?” I asked, stepping away from Kurai. “On the magazine rack…you know, the ones in front of the check outs. They had an article with a girl that looked just like you kissing Michael Jackson…I know you’re a fan of his and all. They said that they spotted them in Ireland of all places. Isn’t that where you are?” “No mom, I’m in Sweden actually.” I said telling a half-lie. “Weren’t you in Ireland honey? Or am I getting mixed up?” “You’re getting mixed up mom. I’ve been in Sweden for a while.” “Oh…Crystal you really need to look at those magazines. That girl looks exactly like you, in every way. She even has the same glasses. It’s scary.” “Well, I will have a look at those mags mom. Perhaps I have a twin in Ireland or something. But I’m in Sweden.” I said, really dreading the fact that I was lying to my mom about this. I really hated lying to her of all people. “Perhaps. So how is Sweden…” “It’s great…hey mom? I gotta let you go, my friend and I are getting cold.” “Is it cold over there?” “Yes mom, I love you.” “I love you too. Be safe.” “I will mom.” “Okay bye hon.” “Bye.” I said as I heard my mom hang up. I closed my phone. “You’re mom saw the tabs too huh?” “Yes, I hate lying to her, because I know she’ll figure it out later then I’ll be in trouble.” “It’s better this way, you don’t know who you can trust.” “I can trust you can’t I?” I asked, stopping and looking at her. “Crys, you could be banging Gackt for all I care and I wouldn’t snitch on you…” “Who is that?” “Only the hottest Japanese rockstar in the Eastern Hemisphere.” Kurai said, her heart swooning. “He’s like your Michael Jackson then?” “Yes. Only he’s not as world renown as Michael is.” “I see.” I said, “So you aren’t going to run to the tabloids once I leave?” “No. What’s your business is your business, no one else’s.” Kurai said, as we continued down the street. I nodded. We roamed all of downtown trying to find that “dream dress.” Finally in the window of a private, upscale boutique, I saw what I was looking for. We went inside and tried on the dress in the window. It wasn’t quite a perfect fit, but the dress shop specialized in fitting so I paid for it and any accessories that I needed to go with the dress. After I was done, I still had over a grand left. Both Kurai and I were tired from walking all over downtown so we grabbed a cab to her car. The rest of week went by fairly quickly. We went to a few clubs together and Kurai introduced me to her group of friends. A couple days before the festival was to start, Kurai and I were talking, our conversation consisting of the clubs in the area. Kurai wanted to hear the music that Michael and I had collaborated on. As I popped the CD into her CD player, my phone chimed saying that I had a message. I looked at it, while pressing play on her CD player. Hey Crystal, This is Will, just to let you know, Kylie accepted the song. It’ll be on her newest album due early next year. Congratulations. I jumped up and down when I read it. Kurai looked at me as if I was nuts. “What the hell is up with you?” Kurai asked, her eyes meeting mine. “You hear this song playing?” “Uh, yeah?” “It’s going to be on Kylie Minogue’s next album!” I said, excitedly. Kurai’s jaw dropped. “Bloody Hell, you’re kidding me.” “No! Will.I.Am…” “From the Black Eyed Peas?!? Damn! You’re lucky! He was there?” “Yeah, him and Michael are working on some new sounds for his album coming up. I was singing this song when he walked in. He observed me and listened to it, then sent the song to Kylie and she accepted it!!!” “Congratulations. Were you scared she would reject it?” “Yes, Will was so confident that she would accept it that we made a bet. If I lost, he would pay for a vacation to anywhere I chose…” “But you won…” “I know, I get to get signed on to Michael’s record label for one album.” I said, dreadfully. “Oh my God! That’s great! You’re going to be famous.” “That’s the bad part though, I’m so unsure of my talent. Michael’s trying to change me.” “Really? Why?” “He says that he doesn’t want me to think so lowly of myself…” “Well that makes sense, I read in a magazine that men don’t like it when their partners verbally beat themselves up. It would only make sense that he wants to change you.” “I guess…” “Crys, seriously, what’s not to like? You are brilliant and even though your not Mariah Carey or Whitney Houston, you’re definitely better than most artists out there. You actually write your own music.” Kurai said, her eyes meeting mine. I nodded. “Perhaps things won’t be bad. I just never imagined my dreams coming true.” “You’re one of the lucky few. Be happy.” Kurai said as she got up from the couch to grab her laptop. My cell phone began to ring. I glanced at the number and flipped open my phone. “Hey baby.” I greeted. “Hey darling, congratulations. Will told me that Kylie accepted your song. I’m drawing up some papers right now for you to sign when I come to see you. Are you excited?” “A little.” I lied, I was bursting with joy. “Just a little? Crystal, I know you better than that…” “Okay, Okay, I’m really excited.” “There we go. So are you excited about me coming to Sweden in a couple of days?” “I can’t wait to see you. Now what is this festival?” “It’s an art festival, they have an art auction for those who can afford. It’s invitation only and those with an invitation can bring one guest.” “And I’m that one guest.” “Yes.” “How are you going to get the invite to me?” “Well, that‘s why I wanted you to get a dress with the money I gave you. Hopefully you did…” “I did, but you can‘t expect me to just sneak in…” “You’ll give one of the gatekeepers a hundred and tell them your with M. Jackson. They should let you in.” “That’s bribery.” “Well, you do what you have to.” “So what else do they have?” “They have a carnival of course. It’s usually for the public, but for the festival they shut it down and only let those with an invitation through. They have the art auction, they have lots of different auctions going on. All the proceeds go to charity.” “That’s cool…why not open it to the public then?” “They prefer that those making over 150 thousand a year attend so that they can become regular attendees…” “Almost sounds like a cult, but I’m not making 150 thousand a year…I’m lucky if I make twelve…” “Say goodbye to that. With your talent, you’ll be making anywhere from 20-40 million a year…” I dropped the phone. I quickly picked up my phone. “What?” “Crystal, that song that you wrote? It’s going to get you a lot of money.” “Dang. How much are we talking about?” “Three or Four million if the album goes platinum. Not to mention if Kylie decides to release it as a single. If she does, you’ll be getting money, royalties…” I went weak in the knees. “Oh my goodness…I need to sit down.” I said looking at Kurai. I drew in a deep breath as I sat down, in hopes to slow my racing heart. “Which is why I need to get you signed on with my label, before Sony, or some other major record label signs you on.” “They wouldn’t do that would they?” Michael must have had me on speakerphone because Will began to laugh. “Crystal, I’ve gotten calls from Epic, and Atlantic asking about you.” Michael said, chuckling. “Are you serious?” “Not to mention Kylie’s people were so grateful. They were about to throw what was it…15? Yeah 15 million to sign you on as a songwriter.” Will said. “WHAT?” I said, nearly dropping the phone again. While AFF and its agents attempt to remove all illegal works from the site as quickly and thoroughly as possible, there is always the possibility that some submissions may be overlooked or dismissed in error.
