Jessica Goicoechea had been having no trouble getting along with everyone, since she had all the time in the world and a lot of friendly neighbors. She sat at a table with Gordon at breakfast one morning. He looked tired, hunched over a bowl of cereal; perhaps he just wasn’t a morning person. Jessica attempted to make small talk.
“Did you have a good evening?”
Gordon shrugged, “I watched Cheetah Girls 2.”
“Ah, I saw that movie years ago,” remarked Jessica. “A Disney Channel movie, sí?”
“You get the Disney Channel in Spain?” Gordon asked. “Man, we’re really sorry.”
Jessica laughed before eating a spoonful of yogurt.
Gordon propped himself up on his elbows, “Last night, I also went ahead and looked you up.”
“Oh? What did you find?”
Jessica secretly hoped he would say he liked what he saw.
“I found a couple of photos you did with this photographer . . . damn, what was his name again? Kessel?”
Daniela and Raven conveniently walked by and corrected him, “Kesler.” Gordon jumped slightly, but remained courteous.
“Yeah, that. Thank you.”
Daniela and Raven sat down at the table right next to them. Gordon then turned back to face Jessica.
“You were impressed by his work?”
“I’m getting to that.”
Gordon and Jessica each took a spoonful of their respective meals.
“I sent Captain a link to those photos. Two minutes later, he shows up at my door saying we need to hire him or whatever.”
“Why? Captain can see my bum whenever he wants.”
“Ask him yourself. I’m too tired from writing emails to tell you everything he said.”
Gordon looked back down over his cereal and kept looking down.
“Did you at least like the photos?”
“Huh? Oh yeah, I did. Very lovely.”
Daniela waved at Jessica from her seat. Once she got Jessica’s attention, she pointed at Gordon and mouthed “mariposa.” Jessica quietly mouthed “oh” in response before returning her attention to Gordon.
“Do you like working here?”
Gordon looked up from his cereal. That was a rather deep question for her to ask him.
He shrugged, “I like the people. Makes my job easier. Captain is a mixed bag, though. He’s a nice guy, but . . .”
Gordon invited Jessica to lean in, “He likes to have things his way.”
“Really? I never got that impression from him. He is always so accommodating to me.”
“Oh, he’s always accommodating to the women. Trust me - he will never be anything less than a gentleman with you. But with anyone else, he’s . . . let’s see, how do I put this? . . . he’s assertive.”
Jessica questioned, “How so?”
Gordon shook his head, “I don’t think I should tell you. He won’t try to drag you into his personal problems if he can help it, so my advice is that you just let him worry about them.”
Jessica sat back down and pondered aloud, “Then I should just show him my bum?”
Gordon was impressed, “Now you’re speaking his language.”
As if on cue, Captain walked into the cafeteria and approached Emmy. Jessica ate her yogurt and watched as they chatted a bit before leaving together. Gordon turned and looked, then spoke to Jessica.
“See that? That is a man who thinks breakfast can wait.”
Jessica giggled, her yogurt spoon still in her mouth.
“I completely understand. Emmy is amazing.”
“You think you’re on her level?”
“Oh no, I am not nearly that vain.”
Gordon made a small nodding gesture, then patted Jessica on the back of her hand.
“Good answer.”
His cereal finished, Gordon got up to leave. He invited Jessica to hang out in his room, an offer she humbly accepted.
