Winds of Destiny(Pt29)
“Land ahoy!” Sav yelled over the deck an hour later.
“You are supposed to yell that when you first see the land Richard, not when you are surrounded by it.” Nick told him.
“So I’m a little late.” Sav giggled and scurried toward the stern.
Nick shook his head and released the clamp to lower the bow’s anchor.
Sav quickly approached Chelsea, gently taking her hand to stop her from finishing her task of securing the mooring line for the aft anchor.
Sav smiled brightly at her. “Travis, may I have the honor of escorting your lovely wife to shore?”
Travis stared hard at him, then glanced at Chelsea. “Um…sure.”
“We have to finish securing the yacht first.”
Sav took a quick glance around. “Looks secure to me.”
“Well…” Chelsea started as she too looked around. “I guess it will be, nothing that can’t wait until later. Thank you Rick.” Chelsea smiled, squeezing his hand tighter as she went toward the dingy.
Sav pulled her back. “I was thinking you could fly over with me.”
“What?” Travis whipped his head around.
“Fly!” Chelsea gasped. “Oh…I don’t know about….”
“You will be perfectly safe with me.”
“It’s really fun Chelsea.” Crystal said as she joined them, taking Travis’ hand when she stepped into the dinghy. “I’ve done it a lot of times with them.”
“You wouldn’t drop me?”
“Of course not.” Sav laughed, scooping her up in his arms. “If I did, you would land in the water.”
“That’s not very reassuring.” Chelsea scoffed.
“I’m not going to drop you...promise.”
“Keep your hands to your self.” Joe smacked him hard enough on the shoulder to send him forward a step.
“I’ll be holding onto my precious cargo, so my hands can’t roam.”
Travis attempted to move to them, but Nicks hand on his shoulder held him in place. “Richard…mind your manners.”
Ignoring him, Sav leaned closer to Chelsea ear. “Hold on tight.” With a gentle push, they lifted from the boat’s deck.
Chelsea gasped and tightened her arms around his neck, glancing down at the water some twenty feet below them. Looking back at him, she met his eyes, saw the slight smile on his lips. “H..how fast can you fly?”
“I’m not sure…really fast if I have too. It takes a lot of energy…flying fast anyway. At a slow leisurely clip it doesn’t…and I didn’t want to scare you by going fast.”
“Being this high is scary.” Chelsea mumbled.
Sav laughed. “I’m afraid of heights, so I don’t go high.”
Chelsea smiled at him and looked around her. “I bet the island would be beautiful flying over during the day….without a plane.”
“I’m sure it is.” Sav replied, squeezing her tighter as he descended toward the white sandy beach.
Landing softly, Sav frowned as his legs became wobbly. Taking a small step forward he stumbled, next thing he knew he was staring down into Chelsea startled face and became very aware of his body pressed against hers. Sav’s eye’s traveled down to her parted lips and barely moved to close the distance before his mind screamed at him to stop. “I’m sorry, falling wasn’t part of the plan.”
Chelsea pulled her mind together, tried to ignore his lean body pressing her into the cool sand. “I warned you about walking on land after so many weeks at sea.”
“I want to kiss you right now.” Sav replied softly, as the thought tumbled from his mouth. Instead of doing what he wanted, he held back the groan and pushed himself up, then pulled Chelsea to her feet.
In the bright moonlight, Chelsea briefly held his eyes. Clearing her throat she started brushing the sand from her clothes. “You shouldn’t say such things when you know it cannot happen.”
“If I tried to kiss you, you would probably slap me again.”
“Probably.” Chelsea defensively replied, then noticed that he was intensely staring toward the dense foliage. “What?”
Sav tilted his head slightly, picking up the sounds and very familiar vibrations. “We have company….stay here.”
Chelsea went to protest but Sav was already gone. Minutes later, she heard the woman’s scream, rustling of brush, then sound of another man’s voice…then quiet.
Becoming uneasy, Chelsea glanced over the water to see where the others were, she started backing toward the water, ready to swim if she had too. She nearly jumped out of her skin when the soft female voice whispered in her ear.
“Hello.”
Chelsea spun around, clasping her hand over her heart. “Who are you?”
“Gail Collen. You must be Chelsea?”
“How do you know who I am?”
“We are a very tight family, nothing goes unnoticed or secrets kept.”
“I’ve heard your name mentioned, but did you have to scare the life out of me. Does all your kind do that?”
Gail smiled apologetically. “I’m sorry.”
Chelsea turned to the laughing voices coming toward them. In the moonlight, she could see that Sav had his arm draped over a man’s shoulder and a woman had her arm around his waist. When they joined them by the water, Chelsea recognized the woman as Joe’s daughter, Amber.
“Hi Chelsea, glad to finally meet you.” Amber smiled and pulled her into a light embrace, feeling her relax after Gail scared her.
“You father has told me so much about you.” Chelsea replied.
“Daddy always did love to brag about his children.” Amber informed her.
“I’m sure Joe didn’t say a damn thing about me….Phil.”
“Yes he did.” Chelsea giggled and shook his hand. “I didn’t recognize you or Gail he never showed me a picture.”
“Typical of Joe.” Phil frowned.
“Everyone else is hiding out there. They can come out now!” Sav yelled.
“You should have felt us miles back.” Phil punched him in the arm.
“I was distracted and wasn’t paying attention.” Sav glanced at Chelsea with an apologetic smile, then to the other family members that clamored from their hiding places.
Chelsea marveled at the large group of people that had gathered on the beach, all talking and greeting Sav, then introducing themselves to her, making her feel welcomed.
“Daddy…can’t you row any faster!” Amber yelled over the water. “I’m not flying out there.”
Joe’s laughter floated to her. “This little boat is motorized.”
“Then put it in high gear to make it go faster.”
“I like her already.”
“Don’t even think about…”
“Relax Joe. I’m a happily married man.”
“Amber is happily married also.” Nick put in.
“No she isn’t.” Joe shot back.
“She didn’t tell you?” Nick feigned shock. “Scott and Amber were married two months ago.”
“What!” Joe bellowed and shot to his feet.
“uh oh…I guess she didn’t tell you.” Nick didn’t bother to hide his smirk.
“I will be having a private conversation with my daughter about that later.” Joe flopped back on his seat, frowning a moment before he turned back to Nick. “Did she really get married?”
“Yes Joseph.”
“Why didn’t she tell me?”
“I’m sure Amber will discuss that with you.” Nick told him, jumping over the side to pull the dinghy onto the beach.
“She must really love him.” Crystal patted his shoulder and let Nick help her from the boat. She was immediately pulled into Gail’s waiting arms.
Joe stumbled from the boat and went straight to Amber, taking her face between his large hands. “We have to talk later…privately.” He glanced toward Scott who was standing a few feet away.
“You bet.” Amber smiled up at him.
Hugging her tight a few seconds, Joe released her and kissed her forehead, then turned to the rest of the family members.
“You have a large family Joe.” Travis said after meeting everyone.
“It has grown since the old days in the band.”
“Yeah it has, but how did they know we were going to be here?” Sav asked glancing at him.
“Surprise.” Joe whispered in his ear.
“You did all this?”
Joe smiled and kissed him. “With Malvin’s help.”
“Chelsea and I knew also. Joe gave us the heading and swore us to secrecy.”
Sav stared at him shrewdly. “What are you up to Joe?”
“Some long over due family time together.” Joe grabbed his hand to pull him toward the palm trees. “OK everybody, time to get this party properly started, Mal lead the way.”
“Is this Crystal’s early birthday party?” Sav asked.
“No, we’re going to celebrate that in Dublin.” Nick said from behind him.
“Did you know about this?”
“I didn’t tell him anything…” Joe started. “…Nick has a problem keeping his mouth shut.”
“You have that problem Joseph, not I.”
“He sure wasn’t opening it about this.” Sav grumbled.
Joe turned his head to look at him, grinning mischievously. “I was opening my mouth for much better things.”
“I feel like I’m being lead into the lions den.” Sav mumbled.
“Why would you think that?”
“I don’t know what is waiting up ahead, because you kept it a secret.”
“Oh stop complaining, it’s a party to celebrate...to end some of the worst years we’ve ever had to endure, to help put it in the past. Not with just family….” Joe put in as he came to the clear in the palm trees. “…with very close friends too.”
