Chapter 30
Having reached the cave where the Brahmaparush lived, Nick told everyboo sto stay behind him when they walked in. He didn’t want the demon to feel threatened at first, hoping that he might give up the information they needed, without having to resort to violence. But if it came down to it, and the demon did decide to attack, he had msuresure the humans were prepared for battle. Even if the demon was outnumbered, that particular breed was known for its strength and viciousness in battle, so it would not be an easy fight. There might also be more demons hiding further back in the cave.
Slowly the group entered the cave, Nick leading and Kevin bringing up the rear. It was dark and dank, and it smelled like something had died in there. The humans were all equipped with flashlights but Nick had changed into his vampiric visage, improving his night vision.
Hearing something scuttle across the floor of the cave, Jess gasped, but was held back from screaming by Howie’s hand flying up to cover her mouth.
“God!” Dani whispered, “Could this get any creepier?”
AJ rolled his eyes, “Great! Thanks! Yost jst jinxed us!”
Dani glared at him, “Shut up” she hissed, “I didn’t!”
“Yeah…whatever” was his reply.
Nick turned around, glaring at both of them, which was only made scarier by the glow of his demonic eyes, “Would you be quiet?” he asked.
Dani shuddered, nodding, and AJ glared back for about two seconds, before sulking and nodding as well.
The cave started expanding until finally they were at a junction. There were three different ways to go. Nick sniffed the air, making AJ think of a dog or something and he couldn’t help snickering. Nick turned around sending a hard glare his way, before pointing to the grotto to the right.
The group started waling again, but only for a minute or so, before Nick raised his hand telling them all to stop. He turned around and indicated that they should stay there, and he while he walked deeper into the cave. When everyone had indicated that they understood, he turned back and proceeded forward. About a hundred feet further down, Nick finally reached what they were looking for.
The cave opened up into what could only be described as a room, filled with old furniture that had seen better days, and burnt out candles on every surface. Nick sniffed the air again, smelling that not long before they had arrived, the candles had been lit, meaning that Fensahuit was most likely still hiding there.
Nick decided not to sneak around, as that might give the wrong impression, so he silently called out, “Fensahuit?” he looked around the cave, “are you here?”
There was a rustling in one of the corners of the room, and then a voice hissed, “Vampire…what is your business here?”
Nick squinted trying to make out the shape in the corner of the room, “I’ve come to ask about the Slayer” he answered truthfully.
“What business have you with the Ssslayer?” Fensahuit hissed crawling a little further out into the room, obviously intrigued.
Nick was finally able to make out Fensahuit’s features, and even though he was a vampire, a monster, himself, Fensahuit scared him just a little.
Fensahuit was thin, with long arms and legs. His skin was almost gray and it looked like old leather. His eyes, big and shaped like a cat’s, burned red in his wrinkled, weathered face. His fangs where so long he wasn’t able to close his mouth and he had no hair on his head covering his small pointed ears. The only thing covering his body was an old loin cloth, which Nick suspected might be as old as Fensahuit himself.
“I’m trying to locate her.” Nick answered honestly.
Fensahuit took another step forward, looking straight into Nick’s eyes. The red eyes narrowed as Fensahuit studied Nick, “You seek her because you love her.” he stated. “Why should I help you?”
Surprised that the demon had been able to read him so easily, Nick struggled to come up with an answer that would satisfy Fensahuit.
“I can guarantee your safety from the Slayer if you help me” Nick answered. Of course he didn’t know if that was true, but it was the best he could do. “Either way, I will find the Slayer.”
Fensahuit started to sway from side to side, while contemplating his answer. He was humming in a low voice, so deep it almost sounded like a growl. Finally, it seemed like he had found the answer he was looking for, as the pitch of his humming got higher and he finally stopped swaying to look into Nick’s eyes again.
“Your answer pleases me.” he told Nick. “The Slayer is no longer among us.”
Nick’s eyes got large and if he still had a working heart, he knew it would have stopped at that moment.
“Dead?” He asked, not really wanting to know the answer.
Fensahuit chuckled, which actually sounded more like hacking, “No vampire. She is not in our world anymore. She is in the world where oceans are yellow, forests are blue, the sun is the color of blood…such a nice color…” He sighed thinking about the blood red sun, “Tasty sun…It is the world where vampires may roam day and night!” The last part was shouted, startling Nick. “Now go Vampire, I have no more to say!” Fensahuit retreated back into the corner where Nick had found him at first, and Nick began walking back to the humans waiting outside the room, relieved to know that Angel wasn’t dead, but there was still the trouble of getting to the dimension she was taken too. They would need some serious magics for this.
When the gang saw Nick walking back toward them, a frown on his face, they all feared the worst, that Fensahuit had not been able to help them. Kevin was the first one to say anything.
“Could he tell you anything?” He asked Nick as they began the trek back to the entrance of the cave. Nick turned to look at him,
“Yeah…How are you with magic?” He asked looking at Kevin.
“Magic? I…I’m capable I guess, but what would we need magic for?” Kevin was surprised at Nick’s question. He had expected to be told where Angel was being held captive, and they go there and free her. That there would be magic involved, had been far from his mind.
Nick’s face looked grim as he said, “Angel’s being held in another dimension, a hell dimension. We need dark magic to even have a chance at going there.”
If it was possible Kevin could have sworn he felt the color drain away from his face. He had heard stories of some of the hell dimensions, and none of them pleasant, and he knew exactly how dangerous a rescue mission to one of them would be. But he would not be deterred. Angel was his responsibility, and he would do anything to get her back. If there even was the slightest chance that she was still alive, he would conjure up Beelzebub himself, to save her.
“Then that is were we go.” Kevin said looking into Nick’s eyes. He could see that the vampire agreed with him, and he knew that Nick would do all in his power to save Angel, just as Kevin himself. Somehow, a bond had started forming between the two.
