Chapter 31
Friday morning
****************
“What time’s the flight?” David’s father asked as they pulled up in front of the terminal building.
“Seven forty five. I’ve plenty of time, Dad,” David replied. “It’s only just after six now. I don’t even need to check in for another forty minutes.”
“Well, have a good flight, Son, and ring us when you arrive. You know how your mother worries.”
“Yeah sure, Dad, and thanks… Thanks for being so understanding…”
“Take care and give our best to James. Make sure you bring him for a visit soon, won’t you?”
“I will, Dad.”
David gave his father a quick hug and hopped out of the car. Retrieving his shoulder bag from the trunk he stood on the sidewalk and waved as his father drove off.
Turning around he headed into the terminal building and to the check-in desk.
***************
The flight attendant had just announced they could use their cell phones once again now they were taxiing to the gate. As he turned his phone back on, James realised for the first time he had no idea where David’s parents actually lived. He knew it must be within an hour’s drive of the airport but he’d never thought to ask for the address. There had been no need. Shit! He was gonna have to ring and ask for directions. That’d go down well, waking the family at this hour. He hoped David’s cell phone was switched on. Of course, he could always go and get breakfast and kill an hour or so first…
***************
As David strolled to the gate he wondered what he should do about ringing James. He’d promised to ring in the morning. They hadn’t agreed a time but he knew James would be expecting him to call first thing. If he waited until he touched down in LA it would be nearly noon. That was too late but on the other hand if he rang now James would be sound asleep. It was the middle of the night in California. David wondered what time James would have gotten home. Maybe he hadn’t gone to bed yet and, even if he had, David knew James didn’t sleep well at the best of times. He was probably lying awake worrying about his mother, assuming he hadn’t cried himself to sleep that is.
As David approached the gate, the first of the arrivals were coming off the plane into the lounge. The inbound flight couldn’t have been more than half full if the numbers already making their way toward him were anything to go by.
He was about to take a seat when his phone started to vibrate in his pocket. He put his bag down and reached for the phone, wondering what he’d left behind this time. There was always something. His mother had once joked that he did it subconsciously to provide himself with an excuse to come back but, of course, they both knew he never needed an excuse to visit his parents.
“Hi, what did I forget?” he asked as he answered the phone.
“Er… it’s me,” he heard James’ voice say. “Sorry to ring you so early.”
“James! I was just thinking about you, Baby, wondering if you were asleep. I guess we’re both up early today. Are you okay?”
David grabbed his bag and stepped out of the flow of people passing through the lounge.
“I’ve done a really stupid thing…” James began.
David’s heart missed a beat. What now?
“James?”
“I’m at the airport…”
“Oh, poor Baby, have you been there all night?”
Had he dozed off and missed his flight?
“No, I’ve just landed…”
That didn’t make sense. Noise abatement regulations didn’t permit any flight to land at LAX at this hour.
“… US Airways flight number 17 to Los Angeles will commence boarding at seven fifteen. Passengers should make their way to gate number 32…” a disembodied voice announced over the PA system.
“Sorry, James. I didn’t catch that… the boarding announcement drowned you out.”
There was a pause at the other end of the phone.
“James? Are you still there?”
“Where are you, David? It sounded like…”
“I’m at the airport,” David said. “I’m waiting to board. I should be home at lunchtime. I can’t wait to see you…”
“Maybe you won’t have to,” James said. “Turn to your left.”
“What?”
David did as he was told and gasped in astonishment as he saw James standing six feet in front of him.
“James!” he cried, rushing toward him.
David wanted to grab James and kiss him but decided against it in such a public place. He settled for a hug.
“I love you,” he whispered in James ear. “Why didn’t you tell me you were coming?”
“Thought I’d surprise you…”
“Oh, you’ve done that, Baby…”
“It was a spur of the moment decision. I didn’t wanna wake you up…or risk disturbing your family by calling so late.”
“They wouldn’t have minded, Baby. Oh, they’re gonna be so pleased to see us both when we get to the house… We’ll get a rental car. Dad’ll be almost home again by now. He dropped me off this morning.”
“Shit!” James exclaimed. “We came this close to missing each other.”
He made a gesture with his fingers.
“But we didn’t and you’re here now. We’re together and we’re gonna stay that way if I have anything to do with it…”
