Chapter 30
When Ann awoke the next morning, her head felt as though it was being pounded by an eighty-foot sledgehammer. When she turned over and opened her eyes, she saw a glass of water and a bottle of Advil on the bedside table. Happily she took three, knowing that was over the normal dosage, but she really didn’t care. She sat up in bed. Gerry's side was already made. She looked at the clock and saw that it was just past noon.
Ann got out of bed, put on her robe and walked into the bathroom. She thanked God that there was a window in there so she didn’t have to turn on any lights. In her state, the less light there was, the better she felt. She hopped into the shower, taking a rather long one. The hot water just felt so good.
When she got out of the shower, Ann put her robe back on and walked into the living room of their suite. Gerry was gone, but in his place were a big bouquet of flowers and a note from him. ‘Not another scavenger hunt,’ Ann thought. Thankfully, that wasn’t what the note said. Gerry had written that he had gone to workout and that he would be back around 2:00. ‘Good, cause I need to ask you how much I had to drink last night.’ As she read the bottom of the note, a sudden look of fear ran over her face. It said “PS: Happy Anniversary.”
“Oh shit!” she said out loud. “I completely forgot.” Ann quickly got dressed, grabbed her purse and the room key and ran out the door. She got downstairs and hailed a cab. She told the driver to go to the first place that came to her mind. “Harrods and quick. I’ve got less than two hours to get an anniversary present for my boyfriend.”
As the cab pulled onto the street, Ann heard the driver giggle a bit. She looked up and saw that the driver was a middle-aged man. “I don’t mean to laugh Miss, but this is the first time in history that a woman has forgotten their anniversary.”
When Ann got to Harrods, she proceeded directly towards the men’s department. After she got done picking out a beautiful dark plum and bright dark blue striped button down shirt, a tie to go with it, and a pair of really nice Italian leather loafers, she ran upstairs to the lingerie department to get something for later that night.
When she finally got back to the hotel, about an hour and a half later, she had just enough time to put her pj’s on and flop onto the couch before Gerry walked in the door. He kissed her on the forehead after saying hello and walked into the bathroom. “I am glad to see that you are up,” he said as he got out of his sweaty clothes to hop in the shower. “When did you get up?”
“Around noon,” Ann replied.
“What have you been doing? Watching TV?”
“Yep, that is pretty much it.” Ann smiled nervously. ‘Oh Ger, if you only knew,’ she thought to herself.
“Could you order some food, babe?” he said as he turned on the shower and got in. “That workout gave me an extra appetite.”
In her rush after she woke up, Ann had forgotten to eat anything and was thankful that Gerry was hungry, so that she could order room service. When they had finished their snack, Ann walked over to Gerry and curled up next to him. He looked at Ann, almost laughing at what he no realized. “You forgot didn’t you?” he asked.
“Forgot what? Our Anniversary? No I didn’t forget,” Ann replied with a nervous look on her face.
“I think this may be a first for you. You never forget stuff like this.” Ann looked like she was about to cry.
“Now you hate me don’t you,” she said as a tear ran down her cheek.
“No, no, I’m not mad at all.” He wrapped his arms around her. “In fact, if you think about it, it is kinda funny,” he said laughing a bit.
“I still feel bad.” Ann laid her head on his chest to hide her extremely embarrassed face.
“Well all is forgiven. Don’t worry; I’m still going to take you out tonight.”
“That was the last of my worries,” Ann said as he ran his fingers trough her hair. “Where are we going?”
“Dinner and dancing.”
“What kind of dinner? Nice or really nice?”
“Really nice.”
“But I don’t have anything to wear. I only brought one dress and I wore it the other day. Now I have to go out and get a new one.” Ann started to get up with a worried look on her face but Gerry pulled her back.
“Don’t worry. I have everything taken care of. While I was out I even found someone to come over here and help you get ready, if that is okay. They should be here around 5:30. I made the reservations for 8:00, but I also told them that we may be a bit late. I convinced them to hold the table for us until we got there, when ever that is.”
“So you bought me a dress and shoes to go with it?” He shook his head, yes. “When did you do this?”
“Before we left New York.”
“Did you take Lynn?”
“Yes but she only had to help me with the shoes. The dress I found myself.”
“Well…” Ann said giving him an expectant look.
“What?”
“When do I get to see it?”
“Be patient.”
“If I have told you before, I have told you a thousand times, I have no patience. Will you ever learn?” Ann said with a laugh.
“I guess not, but you will still have to wait.”
“Well I guess you will have to wait to see yours as well Mr. Smarty Pants. But I also got you something you can wear tonight. Did you bring that black pinstripe suit?”
“Yes, but I wasn’t going to wear that tonight.”
“Well now you are.” They laid around for a few more hours, just watching TV. Ann had just dozed off when there was a knock at the door. The beauty team had arrived. While they set up in the bedroom, Gerry took a shower. When he got out, he discovered that all of his stuff had been moved to the living room. “What is all this about?” he asked Ann.
“Well I couldn’t have you spying on me now could I? You will just have to wait. But before I disappear, I want you to open you present.” When Ann walked back to Gerry, she had a sudden nervous thought. ‘What if her doesn’t like it?’ Then Lynn’s voice came into her head. ‘Ann stop being so ridiculous. You may be an idiot, but he still loves you.’
“Happy anniversary. And sorry again for my memory slip. I really should get a planner or something,” Ann said with a smile. As Gerry tore open his packages, he became awe struck at Ann’s ability to shop on a time deadline.
“It amazes me that you always know what to get me,” he said hugging her. “This shirt is gorgeous and I love these shoes. Thank you so much.”
“You’re welcome. I hoped it would go well with your eyes and I know how much you hate shoe shopping.” The stylist called for Ann. “Well I best be going off to get ready. Oh and Rico wants to know what the dress looks like so he knows how do my hair.” Gerry whispered to him what it looked like and the color if his helped. Rico gave him a very excited look and told him to kindly vacate the bedroom, they had work to do.
Gerry sat in the other room watching TV and drinking tea. Every once and a while, he was startled by a giggle or a scream of laughter. A few times the laughing was so loud Gerry had to knock and tell them to keep it down so he could hear the TV.
Finally, around 7:45, Rico emerged from the room saying that Ann was ready, except for the dress. Gerry walked over to the closet near the door to the hall. He pulled out a garment bag and a shoe box and handed them to Rico. “How does she look?”
“Well,” replied Rico, “I can't give specifics, but I think it is some of my best work.”
Ann, who had just gotten over the shock of how good her hair and makeup looked, wasn’t sure if she could take anymore surprises. “I’m gonna step into the other room,” Rico stated as he laid the bag and box on the bed. “You just let me know if you need any help.
“Okay and thanks again for everything.” Ann heard the door shut behind him. She grabbed for the zipper, opened it just a little, and decided to start with the shoes. When she opened the box, she found a pair of simple black strapie shoes. There was nothing special about them except that to Ann’s excitement, they were Jimmy Choo’s. ‘Even if he didn’t pick these out, he is still going to be rewarded,’ she thought as she laid them next to the box.
She looked back at the garment bag on the bed. ‘Just open it,’ she told herself. She Pulled down the zipper one more time and opened the bag. It revealed a dress more beautiful than she could have imagined. It was a black Grecian looking dress made of satin and silk organza. She slipped off her robe and stepped into the dress.
After Rico had come back into the living room after helping Ann get zipped up and shoes on, he returned to the Living room, where Gerry had now gotten to his feet, nervously looking at the door waiting for Ann. “We’re ready,” Rico announced.
When Gerry saw Ann for the first time, he was almost out of breath. He hair was up with little curls hanging down from all over. The necklace he had given her a short time ago laid softly on top of her cleavage which was shown off by her perfect fit of the dress. Gerry hadn’t said anything until Rico cleared his throat. A little startled Gerry said, “You look amazing.”
“Well you have good taste,” Ann said blushing. “You don’t look so bad yourself.”
“Thanks.” Gerry took her hand and they left for the restaurant. When they got there, they were seated at a small table in a room lit only by the soft glow of hundreds of candles. As they ate, they talked about different things, how beautiful Scotland was, how crazy Ann had been the night before. Gerry leaned across the table and took Ann’s hand. “I don’t mean to use a cliché, but you took my breath away tonight.”
“I could tell. I must admit, I didn’t have much left. This is one of the best dresses I have ever owned and the fact that you picked it out by yourself is just amazing. It is beautiful. Thank you so much.”
“Well, I’m not done giving presents yet. Ann you remember a few days ago when we had that picnic by the loch?”
“”Yes, of course I do.” Ann could remember every detail of that picnic, but she couldn’t, for the life of her, figure out what Gerry was getting at.
“Do you remember you said you could live there forever?” Gerry had the most ridiculous grin on his face, and Ann was getting a little nervous.
“Yes. What are you getting at?”
“Well you remember that little house near the loch?”
Ann nodded that she did. She was finally catching on. “You aren’t saying what I think you are, are you?”
His grin was now so wide, that if he could have, he would have stretched the width of the room. “Well, that statement inspired me, inspired me to make an investment in you.”
“What are you talking about?”
“When I went up to the little house to use the restroom, I talked to the man who lived there. I told him what you had said and he told me that he was far to old to take care of the place. He sold it to me for reasonable price.”
“What?” Ann said more surprised that she thought she could ever be.
“I bought the house and the land and the loch for you, for us.”
“But why?”
“Because I love you, and I love the way you love Scotland just as much, if not more, than I do. When we were next to that loch, I had never seen you look so beautiful. I loved the way you smiled when the sun hit your face and the way the breeze brought the smell of you hair to me.” By this time Ann was crying. “I want that to happen more often. I want this place to be a retreat for us, a place where we go to get away from things and to remember where we came from.”
“I don’t know what to say,” Ann managed to get out. “Not that this matters, but that is the biggest gift I have ever received.” Ann looked into his eyes for a moment, searching for what to do next. “I love you so much,” she said as she leaned across the table and pulled him into a mouth-searing kiss.
The mood of dinner lightened after dessert had arrived. Ann was mildly ashamed of herself when she realized that she was actually feeding Gerry pieces of her chocolate mousse cake, but more ashamed of him that he was letting her.
Next they went to a small salsa club. They danced there until almost midnight when things got too heated during the tango, they decided to leave, and leave quickly.
When they got back to the hotel, Ann told him that he too had one more gift coming. When she tied him to a chair and did the most erotic strip tease he had ever seen, he finally knew what she meant. Three hours after Ann’s last article of clothing had hit the floor, every piece of furniture had been christened. Tables were upturned, couch pillows thrown everywhere. When Gerry woke the next morning and walked to the door to get breakfast, he saw what a mess had been created. When the bellhop wheeled in the cart of food, he took one look at the room, then to Gerry, ended on a short snap of Ann necked and sprawled across the bed in the other room and told Gerry that there would be more coffee sent up when they wanted, free of charge. “By the looks of this room,” he said with a badly concealed laugh, “You will need all the energy you can get.
