"That's my girl," Stephen smiled as Carrie bent down to hug him. "I'm so proud of you."
"I pretty much just stood there," Carrie laughed.
"But you looked darn good doing it," he beamed. "I told everyone around us that you were my daughter."
"Trust me, he did," Carole nodded.
"Well, I'm glad y'all enjoyed it," Carrie smiled. "What did you guys think of Kelly? Pretty amazing, right?"
"That girl has definitely got something special," Stephen agreed.
"She has a very nice voice," Carole replied politely.
Carrie looked around the auditorium for the short Texan. She had promised her before the play that she'd talk to her after, but Kelly had been passed from one person to the next, each wanting to say their own praise to the singer. She finally found her, hugging her mom and dad. "There she is," Carrie smiled, catching Kelly's eye.
Kelly smiled back, looking slightly relieved to have spotted her.
"That's her mother?" Carole asked.
"Yea, she works at the elementary school. You've probably seen her."
"Yes, I have. A lot of teachers have spoken highly of her."
"Yea, she's really nice," Carrie agreed, waving her over. "It's easy to see where Kelly gets it from."
"What are you doing?"
"I haven't had a chance to talk to her yet," Carrie replied, smiling widely as Kelly walked to her, pulling her into a tight hug. "You ok?" she whispered.
Kelly nodded, pulling back, "Thanks."
"You wanna talk about it?"
She nodded again.
"Hey Mom," Carrie turned to her mother. "Is it ok if I stay at Kelly's tonight?"
"Oh, hunny, I don't know..."
"Of course it's ok," Stephen replied.
"Hey," Kelly beamed, shaking his hand. "So...what's the feelings on Brigadoon now that you've seen it for yourself?"
"I say that it is a darn good play, and you, young lady, have a voice that is definitely a gift."
Kelly's smile softened, "Thank you."
Carrie smiled proudly as she wrapped an arm around the shorter girl, "So, what do you say, kiddo? Ready to get out of here?"
Kelly looked at Carole hesitantly.
Carrie followed her gaze and sighed. The girl was way too polite sometimes, "Mom, it is ok, right?"
"Yes," Carole nodded shortly.
"Hey, my mom knows your mom," Carrie commented.
"You know my mom?" Kelly asked Carole curiously.
"Um, well, I've never met her formally, but I do work at the elementary school, yes."
"You should totally meet her," Kelly replied, looking around. "Well, they've already left, but I'm sure you're gonna come to another show, right?"
"Oh, well, I don't know. I have a very busy schedule..."
Kelly frowned slightly, not seeing how her schedule could be anywhere as busy as her own mother's, "Oh...maybe some other time."
"You ready?" Carrie asked, patting her side with her hand.
"Yea," Kelly nodded, allowing her to guide them out of the auditorium. "Kiddo, huh?"
Carrie laughed softly, "Yea, I figured my mom wouldn't take too kindly to me calling you baby."

"So...how was the kiss?" Carrie asked as they sat on the small twin bed, sharing a bowl of popcorn.
Kelly shook her head, "You first...how you feel about your mom?"
Carrie sighed, "Well, she made it to one show, right? I guess I should be thankful for that."
"I don't really get it, though. I mean, I understand why she doesn't want to go to the softball game. I think it's complete b.s., but whatever. But I don't get what she has against spring musicals."
Carrie avoided her gaze, staring into the popcorn bowl.
Kelly reached out, lifting her chin, forcing her to look at her, "Let me guess...she's not the lead girl's biggest fan, huh?"
"Kell..."
"It's fine," Kelly gave a small smile, pulling her hand back. "Not everybody I meet in my lifetime will like me, I'm not foolish enough to think otherwise."
Carrie nodded. The girl was definitely way more aware than most people their age. "So..."
"It was bad," Kelly admitted with a laugh.
"Really?"
"Yea, I mean, I don't know if it was me or if it was him, but--"
"It definitely wasn't you."
Kelly smiled, "Well, whatever it was, it was bad."
"Bad like how?"
"Like, I don't know, it was all just wrong and weird and not enjoyable. Definitely glad that wasn't my first kiss."
"Why?"
"Cause after that, I would've seriously considered never kissing anyone ever again."
Carrie laughed, "And that would've been a shame."

"Hey KC."
"Hey," Kelly smiled back at the student passing them in the hall.
"You're totally a celebrity now," Carrie teased.
"Oh, whatever."
"That's like the eighth person to tell you hi this morning."
Kelly shrugged.
"Hey Kelly. Hey Carrie."
Kelly giggled at Carrie's shocked face, "Who's the celebrity now?"
"Does this mean I'm not the new girl anymore?"
"Looks like it," Kelly nodded, freezing. "What the hell?"
"Looks like someone had fun with your locker," Carrie took her hand, pulling her to it.
"Flowers?" Kelly asked, taking the bouquet of flowers that were taped to her locker down. "Seriously?"
"Is there a note?" Carrie asked curiously, smelling the flowers as Kelly handed them to her.
"No," Kelly shook her head.
"You don't like flowers?"
"Not too big on roses. A bit clich, especially if I don't even know the person that sent them, or if I'm not dating them. Don't red roses represent love or something?"
"I think so," Carrie nodded. "So what's your favorite flower?"
"Sunflowers."
"Aw," Carrie smiled as Kelly went to open her locker.
"Shit!" Kelly exclaimed as several balloons popped out, floating up to the ceiling.
Carrie laughed, "You ok?"
"Give me a freaking heart attack," Kelly muttered, jumping up to grab a string on one of the balloons that held a note.
"You totally have a secret admirer," Carrie teased.
Kelly frowned as she read the note, "Not really."
"There's a name?"
"Eric." eric peets
"The lead in the play?" Carrie's eyes grew wide. "The one that's not a good kisser?"
"Yep."
"Have fun with that," Carrie patted her shoulder sympathetically.
"Shut up. I can't go out with him."
"Why not?"
"I don't like him."
"Maybe you don't know him."
"I've known him since the sixth grade," Kelly pointed out.
"You realize there's three more shows, right?"
"Yea."
"So even though you tell him no, he still gets to kiss you."
"Ugh," Kelly groaned, closing her locker.
Carrie laughed, wrapping an arm around her shoulders as they walked to their English class.

"Snow caps for your thoughts," Jessica offered, sliding a box of snow caps across the candy counter to Carrie as she waited for Kelly to finish her shift.
Carrie smiled softly, accepting them.
"So, what's on your mind?"
She shrugged.
"How are Kelly and Ashley doing?"
"You heard about that?"
"Ashley told me, yea."
Carrie shook her head, "I don't know. I haven't known them as long as you have, obviously, but I can tell there's a difference between when I first got here and now."
"How so?"
"Ashley seems a bit pulled back."
Jessica nodded, "Did Kelly tell you what was wrong?"
"Kelly told me what Ashley told her," Carrie looked up at her.
Jessica gave a slight smile.
"Because of that, Kelly's been hanging out with her more, but I don't think it's helping."
"You know."
"That Ashley likes Kelly? Yea, I know."
"How?" Jessica asked curiously.
"I figured it out. You?"
"Ashley told me."
Carrie nodded.
"Them hanging out more isn't going to help anything as long as Kelly's as naive as she is."
"I know. It's probably just making it harder on Ashley."
Jessica studied her carefully.
"What?"
"It's both. It's making it harder because Ashley's always around her, yet she can't do anything about it. Not to mention the fact that Kelly's always talking about you."
Carrie smiled.
"In the same respect, it's easier because, well obviously, the more time Kelly spends with Ashley the less time she spends with you."
"Is she really jealous?"
Jessica nodded.
Carrie's smile faded, "I don't want to come in between their friendship."
"It's not their friendship that you're coming in between."
"Yea."
"Carrie," Jessica said gently, getting her to look at her again. "Don't, ok? Don't worry about it. This is by no means your fault. Ashley would've had to tell her sooner or later, and who knows how Kelly's gonna react to that. So don't worry about it, and don't do something stupid like take yourself out of the equation to make it easier for them. You'd only end up hurting Kelly instead of helping either of them."
"I don't think I could, anyway," Carrie shook her head. "I'd be lost without her. It's not like I have that many other friends around here."
"I don't know; from what Kelly's told me, you're becoming quite popular."
Carrie rolled her eyes, "Kelly tends to be too sweet sometimes."
Jessica smiled, "Yea, but that's why we love her."
"Yea," Carrie nodded, smiling as Kelly walked into the lobby.

"Ready for your final performance?" Stephen asked as Carrie ate her breakfast.
"Yea," Carrie smiled. "This play has definitely been fun. I'm glad Kelly got me to join."
"It starts at six, right?"
"Yep. You're gonna be there?"
"Well, of course."
Carrie grinned, "It's nice having you around to be able to watch my stuff."
"There is always good in every situation," he nodded.
"What about Mom? Is she gonna come?"
"Care Bear...your mom..."
"It's ok, Dad," she shrugged, standing. "You don't have to make excuses for her. You'll be there, and I couldn't be happier about that."
"Have a good day at school," Stephen offered a smile.
"Thanks Dad," Carrie waved.

Carrie closed the door softly behind her, walking to the back of the apartment, finding Kelly still sound asleep, the blankets pulled up around her. She kicked off her shoes as she walked over to the bed, sliding in between the comforter and the sheets, knowing fully well that Kelly's bare shoulders meant that she wasn't fully dressed.
Kelly's eyes opened groggily, looking at her curiously. She reached out, wrapping an arm around the taller blonde, pulling her closer. Carrie gave her an appreciative smile as Kelly kissed her forehead before falling back asleep. Carrie wrapped an arm around the other girl, allowing herself to fall asleep as well.

"You're not going to get into any trouble, will you?"
"For being late?" Kelly asked, changing the radio station in the car. "Nah. New month, new set of tardies allowed."
"What about the play?"
"It's not like sports, don't worry. I'm good."
Carrie nodded.
"So what happened?"
"My mom. I'm just so...aggravated. I swear she's worse than a child."
"She's not coming to the show tonight?"
"No."
"I'm sorry, Care."
"It's alright. So how's the lover boy?"
"I talked to him yesterday and told him that I think he's great, but we should just be friends."
"How'd he take it?"
"I think he took it ok," Kelly nodded. "Guess we'll find out tonight, right?"
"Yea, if when you kiss him, he breaks down crying, we know he didn't take it ok," Carrie teased as she parked the car.
"He won't break down crying," Kelly rolled her eyes.
"Shoot, I would if you broke my heart like that."
"Well, I guess I just won't ever break your heart then," Kelly smiled, catching her eye.
Carrie laughed softly.

Carrie shifted agitatedly on the side of the stage as she watched the play. They were definitely finding out how Eric took it as he kept throwing in extra kisses to scenes. She could see Kelly growing uncomfortable, and she wanted to punch the guy. She watched as Kelly turned to walk up the prop stairs, exiting the scene, and Eric reached out, taking her arm and turning her back as he kissed her firmly. Kelly's hands were against his chest, pushing back, her mouth open in surprise. She played it off with a smile. Carrie turned to the audience to find Ashley, Lyndsey, and Jessica in the front row. From the look on Ashley's face, Carrie wasn't the only on that wanted to punch the guy.

Carrie finally found Kelly sitting backstage, still in her costume after the show, "Hey."
"Hey," Kelly frowned.
"What a jerk, huh?"
"Yea," Kelly nodded.
"You ok?" Carrie asked, sitting beside her.
"Yea, just a bit pissed."
"Can't say I blame you."
"I told him to stop," Kelly said. "I told him to stop, and he wouldn't. God, why are guys such jackasses?"
"I don't know," Carrie shook her head, rubbing her back.
"I mean, seriously, what did he think? That making me kiss him would make me like him? All it did was reinforce how bad of a kisser he is, and how little chemistry we have."
Carrie laughed, "Maybe it wasn't just my ex. Maybe all guys are just clueless."
"Maybe so."
"But hey, come on now," Carrie stood up, offering her a hand. "No need to pout because of some butthead. Let's get you changed. There's a lot of people out there that want to say hi."
"Ok," Kelly smiled softly, allowing Carrie to pull her up.
