Chapter 31 Don’t Make A Scene
Tadesco’s was a small family owned restaurant. It seemed like it had been a fixture in the community for generations. Raven remembered her parents talking about having had dinner at Tadesco’s the first night after they came back from their honeymoon, and she remembered hearing Miss Amanda tell her mother that it was the first real restaurant that Standing Elk had taken her to while they were dating. She found Eric seated at a table on the west side of the room near the picture window, the table, as she recalled, had always been their favorite place to sit whenever they came here because of the view of the incredible sunsets. He stood as she approached the table, a look of surprise on his face. As she reached him she slipped an arm around him and leaned in for a kiss on the cheek.
“Where’s your guest?” Eric asked, hoping that the answer would be Bora-Bora or some such other distant land.
“He’s outside signing some autographs for a few of the kids.”
“Humn, always the star huh?” he said as he pulled out her chair and seated her beside him.
“Eric,” she chided, “that’s not like you.”
“Well, Jicarilla things change, I guess Chicago has rubbed off on me a little.”
“Well I hope you’re not gonna act like that tonight, cause I wanna have a nice quiet dinner…I’ve missed you Xa-he’-Ta-no’ .”
“Wow” he said smiling and shaking his head, “You haven’t called me that since….”
“Since that night” she said covering his hand with hers.
As Vin climbed the stairs to the porch on the restaurant he found himself in a bit of a logjam at the front door. Tadesco’s was a very popular place and tonight was no exception. As the crowd eased into the front door, he found himself standing behind two Native gentlemen who were deep in conversation. He couldn’t hear everything they were saying, but he did pick up bits and pieces of their talk and there was something about it that made him uneasy.
He didn’t know why but he didn’t like what he heard. The older gentleman was telling the younger man something about “Ric going out to see her,” “having a long talk,” and “getting the answers he wanted.”
At first it didn’t register, it was just eavesdropped conversation in the foyer of a restaurant, but then as they got closer to the door Vin was able to get a better look at the man, he looked strangely familiar; he looked like….Eric. The next few seconds proved him right, for as they entered the dining room Standing Elk spied Raven and Eric on the far side of the room and nodded in their direction as he nudged Aaron, saying “There they are.”
As Vin finally got through the door he could see Raven sitting holding Eric’s hand.
“I can’t believe her,” he said to himself, “brazen as all get out,” “right in the middle of the restaurant,” “I guess this is supposed to be the old ‘invite ‘em to dinner’ and dump ‘em ploy.” “Well not tonight sweetheart, not tonight!”
As he reached the table he stood over Raven and gruffly said, “Let’s go.” Raven and Eric looked at him as if he’d lost his mind.
“What do you mean let’s go?” “We just got here?”
“Yeah?” “Well now we’re leaving,” he said as he reached to grab her by the arm.
Eric was on his feet instantly, moving quickly between them. “Unless you’re looking to lose that hand you better let go of her arm.”
“You’re out of your league bro.” Vin said vehemently.
“And you’re out of your territory partner.” Eric shot back.
Raven pried herself loose from Vin’s grip and tryed to reestablish the calm before the other restaurant diners noticed there was a problem, she moved between the two men, with her back to Eric she whispered at Vin through clenched teeth,
“What-is-wrong–with-you?” Are you deliberately trying to embarrass me?”
Raising his voice Vin replied, “I think it’s time that your ex and I got some things straight”
“Sounds like a plan.” Eric said as he started to remove his jacket, “Cause you definitely look like you need to be straightened out.”
By this time all the patrons at nearby tables were staring dumbfounded at the confrontation, waiting to see what would happen next. Thankfully for Raven, Aaron had kept his eye on them after he and Standing Elk entered the restaurant, and he was moving now across the room to his brother’s side. As he arrived at their table he clamped a firm forearm around each man’s neck asking quietly, “What’s going on guys?”
