"Kate..." Kelly groaned, turning over to her other side. "Turn the tv down, I have a headache...you're not Kate," she noted as she wrapped her arms around the legs next to her, burying her face in her best friend's side.
"No," Ashley replied. "I'm not."
"Well, can you turn the tv down, anyway? My head's killing me."
"Well, if you wouldn't get trashed."
"I wasn't trashed."
"You don't remember who slept in your bed."
"I remember who I straddled."
Ashley shook her head, sighing.
"Why did you sleep in my bed?" Kelly looked up at her, curiously.
"Because Kate slept in mine."
"Why'd she do that?"
"Because Jill and I put her there after the two of you passed out on the ride back to the hotel."
"Why didn't you put her in here with me?"
"Are you still drunk?" Ashley raised an eyebrow.
"Maybe a little," Kelly admitted.
Ashley rolled her eyes, reaching over for the roomservice tray that was on the other side of her.
"Wait..." Kelly cautioned. "Before you open that, what's in there?"
"Just toast," Ashley assured, lifting the lid on the tray and grabbing a piece of bread, handing it to her. "Eat."
"Thanks," Kelly gave a small smile as she sat up some, taking a bite out of the toast. "I should go check on Kate."
Ashley grabbed her arm, halting her, "Jill's taking care of her. But don't worry, you'll get to be the one to remind her who left the marks on her neck, last night."
Kelly smiled.
"Still don't regret it even though you did it, knowing she wouldn't remember?"
"I didn't do it because I knew she probably wouldn't remember. I did it because it felt good. And besides, it's not like we went too far. I didn't even kiss her."
"There are three hickeys on her neck that beg to differ."
"That's not the same. I didn't kiss her on the lips."
"So what? Is she like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman or something? You don't kiss her on the lips, it doesn't mean anything?"
"Did you just call her a whore?" Kelly's eyes narrowed.
"Slow down, there, killer. It's just a metaphor."
"Simile."
"What?"
"Simile...similes use like or as, metaphors don't, look, that's not even the point. The point is, I don't want you referring to her like that, ok?"
"Ok," Ashley held her hands up in surrender. "Damn..."
"And what was the point of you telling Matt about my low tolerance for tequila, if you were just gonna go and cock block me anyway?"
Ashley laughed, "Did you just say cock block?"
"I'm serious, Ash."
"I told him that because we wanted you to losen up so you'd dance with her, that's it. That's why he only bought you one. The rest were on you. You know how you get. You shouldn't have taken them."
"You should've seen Kate's smile," Kelly shook her head. "And her pout...I didn't stand a chance."
"Yea, well, I'm glad you had fun last night."
"You didn't?"
"No, I was stuck babysitting Jason who was even more wasted than your drunk ass. Apparently some guy groped him on the dance floor, and the only thing that would calm him down was whiskey...have I mentioned that you're the most retarded family I know?"
Kelly laughed softly, "What about Jill?"
"After we had our first round, Jill started dancing with some girl. Then, I didn't see her until just before I called you. She saw me, and just started bawling her eyes out."
"Why?"
"How am I supposed to know?"
"She was dancing with a girl?"
"Well, she wouldn't be dancing with a guy."
"When she walked away when y'all were dancing...was it with the girl?"
"Yea, why...uh-oh."
Kelly leaned back against the pillows, "That's not gonna be pretty."
"Man, that sucks for Meghan."
"Wait, now we don't know Jill actually did anything with the other girl..."
Ashley looked at her pointedly.
"Ok, so there's like a ninety-five percent chance she did," Kelly nodded. "But I mean, that means there's a five percent chance that she didn't."
"We should probably go in there," Ashley nodded to the door leading to the adjoining room.
"They're awake?"
"Yea, I went check on them about a half an hour ago. They're up."
Kelly nodded, sliding out of bed.
"How's your stomach?" Ashley asked cautiously.
"It's ok," Kelly replied. "Thanks for the toast."
"You're welcome," Ashley crawled off the bed.
"I'm just gonna go throw up real quick," Kelly nodded as she took a step forward, quickly turning and hurrying into the bathroom.
"Gotta love tequila," Ashley mumbled, following her into the bathroom to help her.
++++++++++
Kate smiled as Kelly crawled onto the bed with her, resting her head in her lap. "How are you feeling?" she ran a hand through her hair.
"Yucky," Kelly replied.
"How's your stomach?"
"Double yucky. How are you?"
"Yucky," Kate nodded, laughing softly, soothing her thumb over the Texan's temple.
"That feels good..." Kelly mumbled, her eyes closing as Kate continued to massage her forehead.
"Where's Jill?" Ashley asked, sitting on the other bed.
"In the bathroom," Kate nodded towards the bathroom door. "She looked like crap this morning. I don't think she slept."
"We think she cheated," Kelly commented, feeling herself starting to fall back asleep on the taller girl's lap.
"What?" Kate's eyebrows flew up.
"Tell her, Ash," Kelly yawned.
"We, um...we don't know for sure...but there is significant reason to believe that Jill may have cheated on Meghan last night."
"Oh God..." Kate's shoulders slumped. "No wonder she didn't sleep."
Kelly turned onto her other side, burying her face in Kate's stomach.
Kate smiled stroking her cheek softly, watching a soft smile spread across the Texan's face.
"So did you have fun last night, Kate?" Ashley asked with a smile.
"Um," Kate laughed. "I think so. I remember dancing a lot...that was fun. You're a really good dancer," she poked Kelly's cheek softly.
Kelly giggled, snuggling into her further.
"Um, just out of curiousity..." Ashley continued. "Have you looked in a mirror yet this morning?"
"No, why? I look rough, huh?"
"Yea..."
Kate shrugged, "You'll notice that happens a lot, the more you hang out with me."
Ashley laughed, quickly sobering up as Jill walked out of the bathroom.
"Hey," Jill looked at the two of them curiously.
"Hey," Ashley replied.
"Hey," Kate nodded.
Kelly waved, not bothering to turn around to face her.
"So you cheated on Meghan?" Kate questioned.
"Damn, girl," Ashley turned to her. "Your filter is worse than Kelly's, I swear."
Kate raised her hands in innocence. She looked up to notice the tears forming in Jill's eyes, "Aw...Jill...why'd you do it?"
"I don't know why," Jill shook her head, her voice cracking.
Ashley held a hand out, getting her to sit down beside her.
"I wasn't even that drunk," she admitted.
"What all did you do?" Ashley asked carefully.
"W-we made out...and did some other stuff..."
Kate sighed, "You have to tell Meghan."
"What?" Ashley's eyes got wide. "No she doesn't. It was stupid. It was meaningless. She's not meeting the girl again, why does she have to tell her?"
"Because she deserves to know," Kate pointed out.
"All it's going to do is mess things up between them."
"She's our friend, Ashley. Before they started dating, she was our friend. Jill never would've lied to her then, and I'm definitely not lying to her now. She deserves to know. If someone cheated on one of your friends, wouldn't you tell them?"
Ashley frowned, "Yea..."
Kate nodded in satisfaction.
"I agree with Kate," Kelly nodded, her voice muffled.
"Of course you do," Ashley replied.
Kelly gave her the finger, making them laugh, "She's right. You have to tell Meghan. The consequences of not telling her are far worse than telling her."
"Um, I agree with the having to tell her because she's a friend," Ashley nodded. "But I don't follow your logic."
"If you don't tell her, it's gonna come out eventually," Kelly replied, turning onto her back. "And you'd much rather it come out now, when it's your say, and your words, not someone elses. Plus, you do not want to start this relationship out on a lie."
Jill nodded.
Kelly sighed as Kate ran a hand through her hair again, "I can't believe you cheated. I mean...that's not you, Jill."
"I know..." Jill felt herself tearing up again.
"Hey, don't worry about her," Ashley put an arm around her. "She has a zero tolerance policy when it comes to cheating."
"Yea, well, you get cheated on and see how it feels."
"You didn't even love the guy...he was a guy," Ashley pointed out.
"That doesn't mean it didn't hurt," Kelly sat up, her eyes narrowed.
"I forgot how grouchy you get when you're hungover."
"I forgot how insensitive you get when you're breathing."
"Hey now, come on," Kate placed a hand on Kelly's arm. "No need to get upset."
"It's not my fault you can't seem to get over anything. It was years ago, Kelly, over how many CD's will the songs about him span?" Ashley asked.
"Yea, well, it's those songs that are keeping your ass employed, so..."
"It's just getting old," Ashley shook her head.
"Cheating, Ash? You condone that?" Kelly questioned, looking at her incredibly. "And then you want her to lie to one of her closest friends? What the hell happened to you? I am so glad I'm getting out of L.A. while I can, before it sucks me in like it did you."
"It's not like you ever fit in there, anyway."
"And thank God for that," Kelly shook her head, storming out of the room.
Ashley rolled her eyes.
"You know, Ash, I love you, and I know Kelly does too...but sometimes you're a real bitch," Kate nodded before standing and following Kelly to the other room. She closed the door behind her to find Kelly pacing.
"What the hell was that?" Kelly fumed. "Who does she think she is? What kind of best friend says shit like that?"
Kate walked over to the bed and sat down on it, leaning back against the headboard. She waited patiently as Kelly continued to ramble about how crazy Ashley was until the short Texan finally paused taking a deep breath. Kate held her arms open when Kelly turned to her.
Kelly walked over to the bed and climbed on, curling up on Kate's lap.
Kate wrapped her arms around her, pressing her cheek against her forehead, "Feel better?"
"A little..."
"Don't listen to what she said...you know she didn't mean it--not really. There's just a lot going on right now, and everyone's a bit stressed. Y'all had an argument...that happens when you're friends. But the thing about best friends is that you love each other enough to work through it, no matter what."
Kelly nodded, resting her head just under her chin, "I gave you three hickeys last night."
"Oh yea?"
"Yea."
"Did I enjoy it?"
"Yea," Kelly laughed softly.
"Well, that's good, then."
"You're not...you're not mad?"
"I know you...I doubt you forced yourself on me. I tend to get flirty when I drink...it was bound to happen sometime."
"We didn't kiss, though."
"Because we were drunk?"
Kelly nodded, "And when I kiss you for the first time, I'm gonna make sure you remember it."
Kate smiled.
"You're not freaking out," Kelly observed.
"Because I am intensely hungover, and freaking out would not help the situation right now."
"Can you tell me what's on your mind?"
"I wish I could remember more of last night."
"Do you...would you take it back if you could?"
"It's nothing we haven't done before, right?"
"You're retardedly calm this morning."
"I have the worst headache."
"Did you take something?"
She nodded, "Yea, just the price to pay for drinking so much."
"Thanks for following me in here," Kelly straightened up, kissing her cheek.
"I wanted to make sure you were ok," she gave a soft smile, her head tilting slightly, her eyes turning curious.
"What?"
"Do that again."
"Do what?"
"Kiss me," Kate pointed to her cheek.
Kelly did as she was told, placing another kiss on her cheek.
"A little further back."
Kelly kissed her again, further back this time.
"A little bit more."
Kelly kissed her just before her ear.
Kate took Kelly's face in her hands, pulling her back so she could look at her, "Did you do something to my ear last night?"
Kelly giggled, "If I remember right, you thoroughly enjoyed it."
Kate laughed, "I hate this not remembering thing...although, maybe if I did remember, I would be freaking out right now."
"I'd be happy to give you a replay."
Kate smiled, kissing her temple.
"But your mind's on Jill right now," Kelly nodded, curling back up against her as Kate wrapped her arms around her tighter.
"I honestly can't believe she cheated...and on Meghan of all people," Kate shook her head. "She's gonna be so hurt."
"Yea," Kelly agreed. "And not just the friend thing, but the fact that Jill's the first girl that she's really dated. She trusted her with that. That's gonna suck."
"I forgot you've been there," Kate rubbed her back.
"Ashley forgets too. Whenever I talk about cheating, everybody just automatically assumes David. They forget about Claire. But, I guess in all fairness, nobody really new Claire that well. They didn't know about us until after."
"How'd you manage that?"
"I got really good at lying and sneaking around...which I absolutely hated, but it's something that's necessary if I want to keep the charade up."
"How long do you plan on keeping up the charade?"
"I don't know. Until I'm strong enough to deal with all the falling out that is bound to happen."
"I think you're plenty strong enough."
"You're sweet," Kelly ran her finger down her arm.
"Nah, you just don't give yourself enough credit. You are definitely strong enough. You just aren't ready. It's still all new to you. You're still dealing."
"Have I ever told you how much I love that I hardly ever have to explain myself to you? That you just get it?"
Kate smiled, kissing the top of her head.
"You should probably be with Jill right now...making sure she's ok," Kelly noted, regretfully.
"I'm with you right now, making sure you're ok. Ashley's with Jill. She's fine."
Kelly smiled, snuggling into her neck.
"So...my ear, huh? I've never had anyone do anything to my ear before."
"Really?"
"Yea."
"Hey, the offer for the replay still stands."
Kate laughed softly, wrapping her arms around her tighter, holding her close.
Kelly tilted her head up slightly, kissing her neck softly.
Kate took a steadying breath.
"I'm tired," Kelly mumbled against her skin.
"I know," Kate leaned back against the pillows. "Why don't we go back to sleep? We'll feel better when we wake up."
Kelly nodded, feeling her entire body relaxing as Kate started to hum softly.
++++++++++
"Look what I got," Kate smiled, walking out of the bathroom with two coffee mugs.
"Coffee?" Kelly looked up from her laptop.
Kate shook her head, "Tea."
"You made tea?"
"I used the coffee pot to heat up the water," Kate nodded. "One of those tricks you learn in college."
"Oh...like how to tie a cherry stem in a knot with your tongue?"
"What exactly do you think happens at college?" Kate laughed.
"I don't know, but it is fun to think about it...especially with you. You were totally one of those hot college chicks."
"Hot college chicks?"
"You know...sleeps in like just a hoodie with the university's name on it, artsy and smart yet really hot, knows how to do crazy shit with her tongue..."
Kate raised an eyebrow, "What's with the obsession with my tongue?"
"You got all the action last night--maybe I feel neglected."
"No, you don't."
"How do you know?"
"Because you are one of those girls that gets just as much pleasure out of giving as receiving. You love seeing and hearing the other person's reactions to you. You almost get a kinda high off of it."
Kelly smiled, "But what's in it for me?"
"What's in it for you is that since you're so giving, when you finally do concede and let the other person have a turn, they are willing to do anything and everything to please you."
"And how do you know this?"
"You're easy to read remember? It's just your personality. You get your biggest joy out of making those closest to you happy."
Kelly smiled as Kate handed her a mug of tea, "Thank you."
Kate leaned down to her, her head tilting as her lips grazed her neck in a soft kiss, "So you don't feel neglected..."
Kelly's smile grew as Kate sat beside her on the bed.
"So what are you doing?"
"Work, work, work," Kelly rolled her eyes, opening another email.
"Sounds fun."
"A blast," she leaned back on one hand, sipping the tea. "This is really good."
"First lesson, boil water in a coffe pot...check. Second lesson, tie a cherry stem into a knot with my tongue...guess, I better get on that."
Kelly laughed softly, resting her head on her shoulder, her eyes scanning over the email lazily. She sat up straight.
"What's wrong?" Kate questioned.
"The tour..." Kelly shook her head. "Crap, I gotta...Reba and Narvel...do you wanna go for a ride?"
"Huh?"
"I need to go talk to Reba and Narvel," Kelly explained, closing her lap top and climbing off the bed. "Do you want to come?"
"Yea," Kate nodded quickly. "Are you ok?"
"Um, I don't..." she looked around the room. "Where's the keys?"
"Jason has them. They went to some store, remember?"
Kelly frowned, "Are you ok in a taxi?"
"Yea, of course."
"Ok," Kelly nodded. "I'm sorry about this."
"No, it's fine," Kate assured. "You've got something important going on, so I'm here for the ride."
"Thanks," Kelly smiled, taking her hand as they walked out of the hotel room.
++++++++++
"Kelly..." Narvel shook his head as he went through all the papers she had printed out for him.
"I should've waited to fire Jeff, huh?" Kelly looked at him regretfully. "Now the sponsors are leery of everything because he's the one that arranged it all, yet he's no longer apart of it."
"This isn't your fault," he replied. "This tour never stood a fighting chance. Everything about it...it was just done all wrong."
"What do I do?" Kelly asked.
"What do you want to do? Do you honestly feel like this tour is the right thing to do?"
"It isn't me," Kelly shook her head. "None of it is...and it's too soon, I just..."
Narvel nodded, "I think, and this is just my opinion, but I think in the long run the best thing for you to do would be to cancel it."
"Cancel an entire tour?" Kelly felt her throat go dry.
"I know that this is a huge deal, but I think it would be the best thing for you and your fans. Cancel it, and reschedule it a little later your way."
"My fans are gonna be so upset."
"They'll understand."
Kelly rested her forehead in her hands.
"Look, why don't we just take a break from all this?" Narvel suggested. "Reba cooked a great meal, how about we go eat and just relax for a minute?"
"No thank you," Kelly slid the papers over so that they were in front of her. "You go ahead. I'll just go over these some more if that's ok?"
"Of course," he nodded, giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze as he stood before walking out of the room.
+++++++++
Kelly looked up at the soft knock on the door.
Kate stood in the doorway with a plate of food, "I thought you might be hungry."
Kelly gave a small smile, motioning for her to join her.
Kate placed the plate carefully on the desk before sitting beside her.
"How's it going hanging out with Reba? She's keeping you company?"
"Dude...I've been hanging out with Reba..."
Kelly laughed softly, "Crazy, right?"
"Insane," she nodded. "She's pretty cool for an old lady."
"I'll make sure to tell her you think so."
"No, don't tell her that...I don't want the wrath of Reba after me."
"The wrath of Reba?"
Kate shrugged, "She seems like she could get really mean if need be."
Kelly laughed, "Don't worry, I'll keep my mouth shut."
"Thanks," Kate smiled, pushing the plate towards her.
Kelly took a couple bites of food to appease her.
"So how's it going?"
"Not too good."
"What does Narvel think you should do?"
"He thinks I should cancel."
"And do you want to?"
"No, of course not, but I just...it's the only way to fix this mess. I guess, I just have to hope my fans are willing to trust me that I'm doing the right thing."
"I'm sure they trust you."
"People can be fickle."
"Not all people," Kate caught her eye. She glanced down at the plate.
Kelly laughed softly, taking another bite, "Not all people, you're right."
"Do you need something to drink?" Kate asked.
"No, I'm good," Kelly pointed to the water bottle on the desk. "Just...keep me company for a bit while I process all this?"
"Yea, sure," she nodded.
"So..." Kelly reached out, running her fingers over the material. "Did Reba ask why you were wearing a scarf in the middle of June?"
"Yea," Kate laughed. "I told her I was going through an accessory phase."
"Nice..."
"I'm just glad you remembered and we stopped to get it because I'd rather not spend several hours talking to Reba McEntire with three hickeys on my neck."
"Really, it's more like two hickeys and a bite mark, but she would've probably found it funny."
"Yea, a pretty good bite mark too," Kate nodded, pulling the scarf down to run a finger down the side of her neck.
"I've always had a thing for vampires," Kelly admitted.
"Oh really?"
"Yea, something about them is just incredibly sexy."
"So you decided you were a vampire last night and bit the crap out of me?" Kate grinned.
"You enjoyed it."
"Who's to say I enjoyed it? Maybe I was just faking. I mean, I don't really remember, so how would I know?"
"I know moans of enjoyment when I hear them," Kelly smirked.
Kate blushed.
Kelly laughed softly, taking another bite of food, "You know, I've always wondered when the hell did Reba have time to learn how to cook."
"Maybe that's something else she can teach you."
"Maybe so--time management: how to make twenty-eight hours in a day."
Kate laughed, "I meant how to cook."
"Oh nah...I honestly have no desire. I never understood the point of having to prepare something for like two hours, when it only takes fifteen minutes to eat it."
"It can take an entire year to make an album, maybe even more, but it only takes an hour to listen to it."
"Touch," Kelly smiled. "Have I ever told you how much I like you?"
"Several times a day," Kate nodded.
"But usually for different reasons."
"What's the reason now?" she asked curiously.
"You're quick."
"You kinda have to be with you. If not, you're gonna get left behind."
"And you don't wanna be left behind?"
"I don't want to miss out on this."
Kelly smiled, "Quite an adventure so far, huh?"
"Definitely."
"And to think, it's only started..."
Kate bit her lip.
"Ask it."
"You sure?"
Kelly nodded, waiting for the question.
"Are we talking work or are we talking...not work?"
"What were you talking about?"
"I...I'm not entirely sure," she admitted.
"Why can't it be both then?"
Kate shrugged, her eyes holding a hint of nerves.
Kelly smiled softly, "I have formed an amazing friendship with you, and I have loved every minute of getting to know you and I can't wait to find out more about you and all your crazy little quirks. This has definitely been an adventure for me so far...a rollar coaster of sorts."
Kate laughed, shaking her head, "How do you always know what to say?"
Kelly resisted the urge to say that she's been there, not wanting to push her, "Magic."
"Yea, well, even magicians need their energy, so stop worrying about work for five minutes and eat," Kate pointed to the plate of food.
"You totally care about me," Kelly grinned.
"I do," she smiled. "So don't upset me and wear yourself out, got it?"
"Got it," Kelly nodded, taking a bite of chicken. "This is really good."
"Thanks."
"You made this?"
"Reba asked if I wanted to help, and I wasn't about to say no to Reba McEntire."
"I didn't know you could cook."
"Well, like you said, there are plenty of little quirks you have yet to find out about me," Kate smiled, watching her eat. "Maybe I'll cook for you, sometime."
"Yea?" Kelly looked up at her.
"You'd enjoy that?"
She nodded.
"Well, then, I'll definitely cook for you."
"Cool," she smiled.
"Cool," Kate laughed softly.
