Life Goes On(Pt30)
“Grandpa,” Alex ran toward him. Joe squatted down and hugged him. “Are you feeling better now?”
“Yes I am. Have you been behaving?”
”Yes. Everybody has been worried about you.”
”Well, they can stop worrying now, can’t they?”
“Yeah.” Alex smiled and pulled him further into the living room where everyone was waiting.
“Hey Rick, Phil. What are you doing here?”
”Evelyn called us.” Phil said embracing him. “Said that you were…dying.”
“Dying. Who told you that Evelyn?”
She glanced at Nick and in turn Joe looked at him. “Oh you would like that wouldn’t you Nick. That would leave Sav alone. Maybe to seek out your attention again.”
“It’s not necessary for you to die Joseph. He does that anyway.”
”You wish. If that were the case, then why hasn’t he came to you since he returned?”
“Richard has been…occupied with your health.”
“Among other things.” Joe smiled smugly. He turned away from Nick and hugged Amber.
“Just because he’s back doesn’t mean…”
”No Daddy that will never happen between us. While he was away I think I got over my feelings.”
”You think?”
”I’m sure I have.”
”Sure.”
“Is this always going to be an issue for us?”
”Only if you want it to be.”
”I don’t. I’m glad that you’re up and about. And now that you are, we’ll be going home in the morning.”
“But…can’t you stay a few more days?” Joe asked.
“Alex needs to get back in school.”
”Oh.” Joe said a little disappointed. He stepped over to Evelyn and pulled her into his arms. “I’m sorry I scared you like that.”
”I’m not going to say it is ok. Because it’s not.” She pushed away and ran upstairs, almost colliding with Sav on his way down. She glared at him, then pushed him aside and continued on her way. Sav stared after her, shrugged his shoulders and joined the others.
“What’s wrong with her?” Joe said still staring at the stairs.
“Don’t be dense Joe.”
“I’ll have to be this time Rick. I’ve been…out of it for a few weeks.”
“Uh hu. You want the long version?”
Joe smiled. “Indulge me.” watching Sav pour two glasses of blood wine as Nick joined him by the bar.
“Evelyn doesn’t think you love her enough…”
“What? I…I do.” Joe cut him off.
“Not enough to pull you out of the trance you were in.” Phil finished.
Joe raked his hand over his face. “I don’t need…guess I better talk to her. Try to explain…damnit…Rebecca would understand.” he grumbled and headed upstairs.
“She’s not Rebecca, Joe.” Rick yelled after him.
“Are you going to tell me where you've been all this time?” Nick asked Sav sipping the drink he had poured.
“It burns you up that you couldn’t find me doesn’t it?”
“I was worried about…Joe.”
“Yeah right. Worried that your boy toy wouldn’t come back to beat around on.”
Nick looked down at the bar. “That’s not what you are to me Sav.”
“Really. That’s funny, guess the fool in me figured that’s all I am to you.”
“No you’re much more than that.” Nick held his eyes briefly before Sav looked away.
“Whatever.” He said with a wave of his hand. “Where was I? I went underground. Ever heard of that place?”
Nick’s posture went stiff. “I didn’t know you knew of such a vile place.”
”It maybe vile to you, but it was a safe heaven for me.”
“It’s far from safe. The outcasts that reside in such a place are demeaning to the Community.”
”Oh so I’m an outcast now?”
“That is not what I meant. You belong here with…as much as I hate to say it…with Joe.”
”With you, you mean.” Sav took his glass and started away from him.
“You don’t deserve him you know.”
“Give it a rest Nick.” Phil said from his place on the couch.
Ignoring him, Nick plowed ahead. “How long will you be staying this time? You can’t ride Joe’s coat tales forever. Get a life of your own.”
“Get a life of my own.” Sav repeated. “How am I supposed to do that? You always manage to screw it up for me.” “You do it all on your own.”
”That’s bullshit and you know it.” Sav hissed. “Look, I’m not going to have this same meaningless conversation with you…it’s pointless.” He was about to leave the room again when he stopped. “Oh…I should mention this.” Sav turned and faced Nick. “Maybe you should go there. They may teach you about the value of friendship. But then again, they may do…other stuff to you. You might enjoy it since you like to beat and force others to do what you want.” Sav bid Phil and Rick good night and went upstairs, leaving them to wonder what he meant.
*** Evelyn came in and tossed her keys on the table by the door. The house was empty again. Rick and Phil were heading home, they both stayed a while longer, which turned into a month. They spent a lot of their time in the studio reminiscing about the old days and playing music they all still loved. Wrote and recorded a few songs and agreed to release in a few months under the label.
Sav was still being very protective of Joe, but never got in the way of her relationship with him. Of the many times they would lay in each other’s arms late at night, Sav kept his distances. As far as she knew, they hadn’t slept together since Joe recovered. And it made her wonder if everything was really ok between them. Evelyn’s thoughts were interrupted by a load bang upstairs, followed by another. She went up to investigate. Going into their bedroom, she looked around at the mess. The mattress was halfway off the bed, clothes were all over the floor from the chest of draws. A few things came sailing out the door of the closet, followed by Joe’s angry voice.
“Where the hell are they?”
Evelyn cautiously stepped over and peered inside. “Joe what are you doing? You’re making a mess.”
Joe was digging through a box, then dumped it out, dropping it on the floor and grabbed another one. “I’m looking for…know where…I can’t find them…I need to find them.” Joe dumped out another box. “Damnit where are they.”
It dawned on her what he was looking for. Evelyn went over to her jewelry case and opened it. Taking out the velvet box she went back over to the closet. “Are you looking for these?” she asked opening the box and held it so that Joe could see.
He spun around, then tripped over the stuff on the floor to take them from her. “Where did…where were they?”
“I’ve had them put up since Phil gave them to me. I figured you would want them back one day.”
Joe pulled her into his arms, kissing her hard. “I love you Evelyn.”
“I love you too.”
He pulled away from her and noticed the room. “I made a mess.” And started cleaning it up.
Evelyn stopped him. “I’ll take care of it. Go….”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes.” Evelyn smiled and kissed him.
“Tha…thank you.” Joe backed out of the room tripping again on the stuff scattered everywhere.
Evelyn giggled at his boyish behavior. It reminded her of a teenager on his date with the most popular girl in school. She went over and fixed the bed, then went about picking up the cloths and refolding them. It took her two hours to straighten up the room. By that time she was hungry and went downstairs to fix her something for dinner.
*** Joe closed the door to Sav’s room and went about lighting a few candles before he joined him out on the balcony. Sav was standing at the railing, looking out over the dark Irish countryside. Joe grabbed the bottle of blood wine from the table and stood behind him.
“More.” Joe whispered in his ear. Sav held his glass up for him to pour. Joe sat it back on the table and circled his arms around Sav’s waist. He drew in his breath when his hands met the bare skin of his stomach. Leaving feather light kisses along Sav’s shoulder then nibbling on his neck. His hands had a mind of their own and traveled up the smooth expansion of his chest.
“Hungry.” Sav asked him, closing his eyes, enjoying what Joe was doing.
“No….I missed you.”
Sav turned his head and Joe immediately took his mouth in a deep passionate kiss. “I missed you too.” Sav whispered when he pulled away.
Joe held out the box in the palm of his hand in front of Sav.
“What’s that?” he asked looking at it.
“Open it.”
“I didn’t think you would keep these.”
“I remember the night you gave it to me. How shy you were.” He took Sav’s right hand and slid the ring on his finger. “I want to give it back. It belongs there, not in some box.” Joe kissed his finger. “Never take it off again.” Sav dropped his eyes to his hand. He remembered that night also and what he had said to Joe. “Never.” he whispered. Joe wrapped his arms back around him. Gently swaying back and forth and began to hum, then let the words spill out.
I'll be your dream I'll be your wish I'll be your fantasy I'll be your hope I'll be your love Be everything that you need.
Sav chuckled. “Joe, that song has to be what….50 years old?”
“Just shut up and sing the next verse.” Joe kissed his neck.
“Um…” Sav thought for a few seconds.
I'll love you more with every breath Truly, madly, deeply do
Joe picked up the next verse
I will be strong, I can't say that I'll be faithful 'cause I'm counting on
Together
A new beginning A reason for living A deeper meaning y-yeah
Together they did the next lines of verse.
I want to stand with you on a mountain I want to bathe with you in the sea I want to lay like this forever Until the sky fall down on me
Sav closed his eyes and listened to Joe’s soft voice in his ear.
And when the stars are shinning Brightly in the velvet sky I'll make a wish send it to heaven Then make you want to cry(together)
Then Sav
The tears of joy for all the pleasure in the certain
They switched off again
That we're surrounded by the comfort and protection of the highest powers In lonely hours The tears that devour you(together)
Together
I want to stand with you on a mountain I want to bathe with you in the sea I want to lay like this forever Until the sky fall down on me Oh can you see it baby? Joe growled.
“Oh yeah.” Sav replied.
Together again You don't have to close your eyes 'cause it's standing right here before you All that you need will surely come
Sav took up the first lines.
I'll be your dream I'll be your wish I'll be your fantasy I'll be your hope I'll be your love Be everything that you need.(together)
Joe took over the ones Sav sang before
I’ll love you more with every breath Truly, madly, deeply do
I want to stand with you on a mountain I want to bathe with you in the sea I want to lay like this forever Until the sky falls down on me
I want to stand with you on a mountain I want to bathe with you in the sea I want to lay like this forever Until the sky falls down on me
I want to live like this forever Until the sky falls down on me
Their voices trailed off from the last lines and silence settled between them.
“Hum. Not to bad, maybe we should record it like that.” Sav said turning to Joe as his hands became restless on him.
“Later.” Joe replied and leaned forward to kissed him. “I’ve waited long enough Rick and I know you want it as much as I do.”
Sav was steadily unbuttoning Joe's shirt. “Maybe.” tugging it from his jeans, pushing it from his broad shoulders. He let his fingers move over Joe’s chest, down his stomach to the top of his jeans. Sav quickly popped the button, easing the zipper down.
Joe’s eyes never left his face as Sav undressed him. He sucked in his breath when he fingers grazed his hard shaft. Sav looked up at him and saw the fire of desire burning in the green depths. Kissing him lightly on the lips, Sav sidestepped and went past him. Joe took a deep breath and blew it out, to try and stop the tremble of his body from his touch. He spun around and followed Sav into the room.
