Let Me Be The One
Lyrics and Music by Def Leppard
Sav settled in the chair, once Joe sat him down, tucking a blanket loosely around his waist. Joe sat with him for a little while, then got up to make rounds around the room, talking with some that he had gotten know since his arrival and meeting new ones. Joe would occasionally glance in his directions to make sure he didn’t need anything. Nick sat with him for a bit and finally ambled off somewhere else, when the conversations didn’t go anywhere with them. Most of the people, Sav guessed around 60 or 70, in the large room at some point came and talked to him, then Miranda bounced her way over and promptly flopped down beside him and started talking away. Sav smiled and laughed at some of her comments about living in a cave….with vampires and let it slip that she thinks her mom likes him...a lot. Sav tickled her sides and told Miranda that he likes her mom too. Miranda startled him when she kissed him on the cheek, something she had never done and took off for another part of the room.
He had time alone to himself after Miranda left, giving him the opportunity to watch everyone. People milled about in groups, standing or sitting, laughing, drinking blood wine, just having a good time in general. Some one had taken it upon them selves to sit at the grand piano and the soft music floated through the air.
Feeling tired all of a sudden, Sav laid his head back against the soft cushion of the chair, closing his eyes to let the sounds in the room dim to the background. They had been there for a long time, so it seemed to him. ‘I’m not getting enough rest.’ Sav thought. ‘Maybe coming tonight was a little to much.’
He felt the cushion dip down a bit and a soft touch on his arm. “Rick, are you alright?”
Sav raised his head and smiled at her. “I was wondering when you were going to come talk to me?” Taking her hand, he twined his fingers with hers. “Maybe a little tired, that’s all.”
“Maybe I should get Joe, so he can take you back to your room.”
“You don’t have to do that, besides I would have missed seeing you or get the chance to talk everyone else.”
“I could always accompany you to your room.” Linsey whispered. “We can be alone together.”
“And be out of the line of vision of prying eyes.” Sav told her, catching Nick’s steady gaze.
Linsey didn’t need to look behind her to know who he was talking about. “Why does he do that? You haven’t told me much about your relationship with Nick and I’ve heard some of the stories around here, before you came here.”
Sav dropped his eyes to where he held her hand. “He thinks he owns me. Shortly after Lacy brought me across, Nick killed her, or says he did, I'm not really sure about that anymore. He staked a claim on me and has made my life miserable ever since.”
”If he does that, why not send him packing?”
“I’ve tried, believe me. Some of it I hardly talk about and would just soon forget, but that's hard too, because of the prefect memory that comes with being a vampire.”
“When you’re ready to tell me about it, I’ll be here to listen.”
Sav looked up at her with a slight smile, then glanced over to see Nick still staring at him. ‘Why is he staring at me, more importantly what is he thinking? Why has he been blocking me lately?’ Joe came to stand beside Nick and said something to him that Sav couldn’t hear over the other voices in the room. Nick glanced at Joe, saying something in return. Both of them then looked at Sav for a moment before turning away and heading to a different part of the room.
Sav once again dropped his eyes. “Um…Linsey, I have to ask you something?”
”You can ask me anything.”
“I um…we haven’t know each other that long, but I need to know how far you want to take this?”
“I’d like to think we can take our relationship further than just friends Rick. My feelings for you grow more with each passing day, but you don’t feel the same do you?”
Sav kissed the back of her hand. “Mine are the same as yours, but…”
”But…” she replied softly when he stopped.
“The last time I tried to have a meaningful relationship with a woman, Olivia. Nick stepped in and put a stop to it. Tried again with Amber, but my fear of losing Joe and my conscience got the better of me.”
“How did Nick stop your relationship with Olivia?”
“He repeatedly threatened her life and raped her while I was away. Olivia wasn't the same when I returned and a year later, she committed suicide. What Nick did to her was too much for her to handle. He has never let me have a lasting relationship with anyone, other than Joe and even then, he tried his best to tear that apart."
“That’s terrible Rick. I had no idea.”
“So you see, that’s why I want to know how far you want to take it. I don’t want you to get hurt because of Nick. Although he gave me my freedom…I still don’t trust him not to screw up a relationship with you.”
“Well…” Linsey gently touched his face, feeling the light sheen of sweat. “…I’m not going to let Nick get in the way of what I want.”
“You don’t know him like….”
Linsey covered his lips with her fingers. “I can handle Nick, don’t worry.”
“That won’t be easy, because I will.”
“Are you sure you’re feeling alright?” Linsey asked again.
“Yes, I’m fine…well other than what’s obvious.”
“Your sweating is obvious.”
“I’m fine re…”
”Malvin.” She called him getting his attention as he was passing by.
“Hi Linsey.”
“Rick is being stubborn. He’s sweating and says he just tired.”
Mal reached out to feel his face.
Sav leaned back avoiding his touch. “I’m fine really.”
“Are you hungry?” Mal asked, looking closer. “You have been pushing yourself to much lately. Let me get Joe to take you back to your…”
”No…I’m fine, now leave me alone Mal.” Sav waved his hand to shoo him away. “Besides Joe left a few minutes ago.”
“He did? I didn’t see him leave. Where did he go?” Mal was looking around the room and didn’t see Joe anywhere.
“You were busy talking with Gabriel. I guess he went somewhere with Nick, they left together.”
“Oh.” Puzzlement crossed his face. “Why would he do th…”
”I don’t want to think about why they left, now drop it ok.” Sav shot back to cut him off.
“You don’t think they…”
“Malvin drop it.” Sav glared at him.
“Ok, I get the hint.”
”Not soon enough.” Sav mumbled under his breath.
“I’ll just get someone else to take you back to your room.” Mal scurried off to get someone. Sav took a deep breath and shook his head.
Several guys sat down around them, holding guitars. Jack glanced up at Sav as he plucked a few cords.
“Hey Rick, do you feel up to jamming with us? We did that a lot the last time you were here.”
A guitar was shoved in his lap before he could answer. Linsey helped him get in a better position and moved to another seat.
“Yeah we did, but…it’s been a while since I played.” Sav fingered the strings like a long last friend, the strings biting into the tips of his fingers. Sav felt the slight vibration against his legs as he picked at the cords and few minutes later the others picked up on what he was playing and joined in. It wasn’t long before a crowd formed around them, toes tapping and bodies swaying to the music.
Jack looked up at Sav. “You get to sing the next one Rick.”
“Don’t even try it Jack.”
“Why not? You have a great voice.” Mal put in.
“No I don’t, that’s why I sang back-up in the band.” Sav was shaking his head, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
“Who wants to hear Rick sing?” Jack asked the crowd, to which Sav shot him evil look. The group cheered to get him to do it.
Sav rolled is eyes. “Alright.…” holding his hand up to quiet them. “…ok, which one?”
“How about the one you wrote when you were here last?” Jack looked around the small group of players.
“Um…ok, if I can…remember the cords.”
“Funny Rick.” Jack smiled. “Just start it off and we’ll join it.”
Sav strummed the strings and found the rhythm. His voice came in not long after.
Something in the way you move
Let’s me get to close to you
I tremble when I look at your face
And I want all the world to see
Tonight the world belongs to me
Touch me with your animal grace
Put your hand on my heart
And feel the need in me
Let me be the one
Lead me into temptation and
Show me the right side of wrong
Let me be the one
Take me in from the cold
And give me something to hold
Let me be the one
Let me be the one
Burning in the afterglow
Catch the wind don’t let it go
Washed away like words in the sand
A passion that’s so physical
Electric and untouchable
Don’t want to let it slip through my hands
Put your hand on my heart
Feel the need in me
Let me be the one
Lead me into temptation and
Show me the right side of wrong
Let me be the one
Take me in from the cold
And give me something to hold
Don’t let this dream pass by
Just spread your wings and fly
Reach out and touch,
Let your heart just breath me in
I’ll be your oxygen
Put your hand on my heart
Feel the need in me
Let me be…….
Sav’s voice trailed off, his fingers stilled on the strings. Lost in the memory of why he wrote the song a few months after he left Joe and to deal with Vivian’s death. Even though it hardly had any barring on his relationship with Joe, that is whom he was thinking about when he wrote the words on paper.
“Sav are you alright?” Mal asked placing his hand on his shoulder from his place behind the chair.
“Uh….” Sav twisted a bit to glance at him. “I’m fine…memories.”
“I told you he could sing.” Jack blurted out. Loud cheering from everyone agreeing with him.
The somber mood quickly left Sav, when Jack launched into and old song by the band he spent over half his life in. “Hey friend, your taking this one.” He told Jack laughing.
Jack belted out the words to Let’s Get Rocked.
Half way through the song Sav slowed his playing, the sounds in the room dimmed, strangely to him, it sounded like he was listening through a tin can. His vision darkened around the edges, dizziness swept over him, he became light headed…then nothing.
