When Night Falls(Pt31)
Joe pulled the car to a slow stop in front of the barricade, headlights shining through the down pour on the sign that read Road Closed.
“Great…” Phil threw his hands up. “…no more road. Now what?” He glanced at the man beside him. The look he saw on his face was one of defeat. “Joe.”
“We’re never going to find him.” he whispered.
“Yes we will. We just have to wait a little longer, maybe he’ll drift back from where ever he went and we can feel him again.”
~~~
Standing in the grayish fog that crept around him, Sav peered into the darkness, other than the swirling fog and endless blackness, there was…nothing.
“Where am I?”
~~~
“Maybe we went the wrong way…maybe we should have turned at one of the roads we passed back there.”
“I think we went the right way.” Phil reached over and eased the car in park, then turned the key.
“What if…?” Joe started.
“Do you doubt your instinct that Sav is alive?”
Joe looked at him then. “No.”
“OK, then we wait.” Phil grabbed his hand and held it tight. “Turn the lights off, don’t want to drain the battery.”
Joe flipped the switch for the lights, throwing them into darkness, save for the flash of lightening that danced around them.
Leaning his head back on the seat, Joe blocked the sound of heavy rain pounding on the roof of the car. ‘Where are you Rick? Help me find you again.’ Closing his eyes he concentrated on Sav, willing him to heed his calling. Joe turned his hand over squeezing Phil’s, their minds working together to try and find Sav.
~~~
‘A place of limbo between your world and my world.’ Steve replied as he appeared beside him.
“Why here, why not the cross roads like before?”
‘This place works in the same way. You make a choice here too.’
“Have I ever been here....it looks familiar? Did I come here when I tried to kill myself?”
‘No, but you weren’t dead that time either.’
“Am I dead now?”
~~~
Over an hour later, Phil’s eye’s fluttered open. He stared straight ahead at the sign through the rain. A strong wind had kicked up at some point, blowing the rain sideways. He looked at the clouds as the rising sun brightened them to a dark gray.
“There is trouble at home Joe.” Phil said looking over at him.
“I know.”
“Shouldn’t we start back?”
“No. I trust Nick to take care of….Armand.” Joe opened his eyes. A frown creased his brow a few minutes later. “I don’t know what’s going on now, everyone has me blocked.”
”So am I. We should go home.”
”No.” Joe quickly shot back. “Don’t forget who else is there. It will be fine, I’m sure of it. I trust Nick to kill the bastard this time.”
“You do?” Phil’s reply was laced with surprise.
Joe finally looked at him. “Yes, I do.”
Phil studied him a moment before he said anything. “Never thought I would hear you say that.”
“People change. Nick has over the years.”
”So have you.”
“He helped me through some really rough days in the past. I got to know him better. Under that arrogant bastard he likes to display for everyone, is a caring soft heart person...in..in his own twisted way.”
Phil’s mouth hung open. “I have to agree with Rick, you’ve lost it somewhere.”
Joe smiled. “Maybe, but I still trust him to look after our family. Nick would die to protect them. You’ve known that for a long time.”
“Yeah, but I’m still worried about what’s going on.”
“When it’s all said and done, we’ll know.” Joe glanced to the clouds. “We need to seek shelter before these clouds start to break up.”
Before Phil could answer him, Sav trickled into their minds. Joe shot up straight in his seat, gripping the wheel. He whipped his head around to stare at Phil.
“He’s close.” They said together.
Both men threw open their doors and scrambled from the car, hurried footsteps brought them to a stop in front of it. Rain began to soak through their clothes as they got their barring on Sav.
“This way.” Joe said pointing off to the left.
Flying across the mile wide field, Joe came to skidding stop on the water soaked ground, glancing one way, then the other when Sav began to fade again. Joe reached out to him with everything he had, pleading with him to stay a bit longer.
“We’re so close. Hold on baby…please.” Joe whispered in the pouring rain.
Phil yanked his arm, dragging him up the sloping hill to a thicket of trees and bushes. Plowing through the thorny underbrush, that left deep scratches on any exposed skin or dodging trees, they came to another halt.
“I lost him…shit!” Phil huffed, turning in circles, frantically looking around them.
Joe was doing the same. “He felt…different...giving up…RICK...” His yell getting muffled by the rain and surrounding trees.
Phil was about the start yelling too, when his gaze stopped on the outcropping of rocks at the foot of the hill, some 40 feet away. He peered harder at the dark indention.
~~~
‘This place is where the lost souls come too, when they can’t find their way or uncertain of what they want.’
“I’m not lost or uncertain.”
‘Then why are you here?’
~~~
His eyes widen as he realized it to be a narrow opening in the rock formation. “Over here!”
“Where. Do you see him?” Joe asked following behind him as Phil made his way toward the hole.
“No, I don’t see him.”
“Phil…” Joe started, then saw where he was leading them to. “Sav..he’s not in there.”
“Where else would he be Joe? Look around you. Do you see him out here? This is the only place he could have been all this time, away from the sun. He is very close, that much we know.”
Joe peered into the hole. “I’m not going to fit through there.”
“I’ll push you.”
“No, you go first. If I get stuck you’ll be able to keep going.”
“You’re not going to get stuck.” Phil told him and squeezed his smaller frame through the opening.
Joe looked doubtful at the small hole a few minutes. “Armand couldn’t have gotten Sav through here.”
“Well…he did.” Phil replied thrusting his arm back out. The rock he held in his hand had dark red drops on it…Sav’s blood. “Come on. I can see a few more drops. It gets little bigger once you get past the opening.”
Joe turned sideways and maneuvered through the hole, almost getting stuck by a large protruding rock that pressed painfully across his chest. He backed out of the hole and dropped to his knees, twisting his body he squirmed beneath the rock and went through. Once inside, out of the rain, he pushed the wet hair from his face.
“This is insane.” Joe grumbled. “How did he get Sav through there?”
Phil just looked at him.
“Never mind…don’t answer that.”
“It was a stupid question.” Phil said and moved forward.
“Good thing we can see in the dark, its pitch black in here.” Joe grumbled behind him.
Water trickled down the rocks in several places as they made their way further through the passage way. Water began to rise around their legs until it was waist deep and a wall of rocks loomed ahead, blocking them from going further.
“There has to be a way around.” Phil mumbled as he looked for another way. He ducked under the water as Joe flew to the top and found a hole big enough for his arm to fit through, but nothing more to help them.
Phil came up a few minutes later. “It goes all the way through.”
“Armand knew about this place. He never intended to bring Sav home.”
”He’s had a lot of years to plan everything.” Phil told him and disappeared under water.
Joe soon followed behind him, swimming through the cold water to the other side. After climbing from the water, he glanced around, the passage narrowed again ahead of them. Doubt settled deeper in the pit of his stomach as he continued to trudge behind Phil wondering how far back this tunnel went.
Phil stopped again about five minutes later, he heard Joe grunt behind him as his foot landed in the hole he had stepped over. Phil’s eyes sweep the cavern before him, perhaps 20 ft wide and 60 ft high...high above right in the middle was Sav. Phil’s gaze traveled up the thick rope that bound his wrist together, to where the rope was tied securely to clamps in-bedded in the hard rock.
Joe bumped into him. “I felt him again…wasn’t much…” The last word died in his throat when he saw Sav.
“Wait!” Phil grabbed his arm, pulling him back.
“Let go of me…Phil!” Joe yelled.
“Joe…stop…lo..look below him!”
Ceasing his struggle, Joe did what he said. 15 feet below Sav, the floor was lined with sharp pointed wooden stakes, with barely enough room to walk between each one.
“That shouldn’t be a problem.” Joe said as he moved forward and stopped. The night at the warehouse with Crystal and Lily slammed into his mind. He searched the floor in front of him for any signs of trip wires.
“What are you looking for?”
“Wires. He had the warehouse rigged with them, they set off flashes…fires all across…I don’t see any…”
“What about up there?” Phil said pointing upward.
“We’ll go slowly just in case he stretched some across. I’ll hold him and you break the rope or untie it, whatever is easiest.”
“Breaking it.” Phil replied. Giving himself a gentle push from the ground.
Several minutes later both men hovered by Sav, relieved somewhat that they didn’t run into any wires. Joe wrapped his arm around Sav’s waist, trying to ignore how thin he was and even though he was this close, he couldn’t feel him in his mind. Joe pushed aside his fear that they were too late and lifted him a little more to relieve some of the tension on the rope. He heard Phil groan and the rope crackling, popping until it snapped apart.
Joe lowered them to the ground, gently laying Sav on the cold stone floor. Pulling his shirt off, he began to clean the dirt and grim from his face, neck and chest, getting a better look. A few deep gashes still trickled blood after wiping them off several times. Small cuts and bruises marred his pale skin in many places.
Joe softly caressed his cheek, he didn’t stop the burning prick of tears this time and let them fall. “Rick, you have to wake up…we’re here...you’re safe now…”
~~~
“I..I don’t feel…the...” Sav ran his hand over the broken ribs where Armand had slammed his fist there before leaving him alone in the cave. He didn’t feel the grinding in his back of those chipped vertebra.
‘Don’t let that misguide you. You may not feel it, but I do. This….place isn’t where you want to spend eternity.’
Sav’s wayward gaze fell on Steve. “To stay here means no more pain, no more pain and hurt to the ones I love. Staying here means that Joe will not have to be reminded that I failed him, disappointed him…that I couldn’t save Thomas.”
‘Staying here means to fail him too.’ Steve whispered.
“I’ll constantly be reminded of that Steve…to see all of that and more in his eyes for the rest of my life, however long that may be.”
‘Joe will not be the only one you failed. What of the others? Armand will win if you stay here.’
Steve disappeared, Sav darted his eyes around looking for him. His ghostly voice whispered through he fog, Think of your son, Kyle, your grandchildren. Don’t they mean anything to you? Aren’t they worth living for?’
“Yes they are, but is it enough...three times, three times I’ve been forcibly taken from them, from...from my soul mate, love of my life. I’m not sure if I...can’t do that again...be taken from my family...from Joe...in the future...not again.”
‘Yes, Joe will be there for you, has always been your destiny, nothing will change that. You can live for thousands of years without your family, not with out Joe. One cannot live without the other.'
Phil dropped to his knees beside them, getting his first real look at Sav’s battered body. Swallowing past the lump in his throat he took a closer look at the holes in his stomach where the wood slivers had been, blood slowly bubbled from them. Leaning sideways he followed the multi-colored bruising from his side around to his back.
“Lift him up more.” Phil probed his fingers over the vertebra while he glanced at the angry red welts from the whip. “I..I think..it feels shattered again. We have to try and feed him.”
“o..OK…right…” Joe shifted position, pulling Sav’s upper body on his legs. His fangs dropped into place. Biting into his wrist he quickly placed it against Sav’s mouth
Phil stuck his finger in to open it. “Tha..that’s really creepy, his eyes are slightly open. There is no color to them, just black pupil.” The blood pooled in his mouth, then ran down his chin and neck. Phil started rubbing his throat in hopes of making him swallow.
“It’s not…I don’t feel anything. He’s not taking it.”
“Here...try this.” Phil pried his mouth open more, wiggling Joe’s wrist enough to be able to push Sav’s fangs into the flesh.
Moments later Joe was shaking his head, “N..nothing...”
“We’ll try it another way.” Phil snatched Joe’s arm away, grabbing Sav’s at the same time. Cutting a deep gash in Sav’s arms Phil held them firmly together. “Anything?” He questioned a few seconds later.
Joe once again shook his head when loud rumble vibrated through the cavern. Rocks tumbled from the walls all around them. Still holding their arms together, Phil laid his body over Sav to protect him from the rocks that rained down on them. Joe hunched over his head and took a hard blow, he felt the bones break in his shoulder blade. A cloud of dust settled over them, making them cough and blink from the microscopic particles embedded in the dust.
Phil sat up and glanced around the haze filled room, then down at Sav and Joe. “What the fuck was that?”
“I don’t know.” Joe spat out between his teeth as he sat up, the movement jarring his shoulder.
Phil felt his pain through their bond, seeing it on his face. “Are you alright?”
“That is a stupid…ahh…question Phil. To answer with a stupid answer…NO!”
“Where?”
”My shoulder…I think a rock hit me...I felt the bones break.”
“You think? That’s all that fell!”
“Don’t worry about me, go check the tunnel we came through.”
“You’ll have to hold your….” Phil started.
“That’s not working either. I didn’t feel the slightest pull from him.”
~~~
“Yes.” Sav spun around to where Steve’s voice was coming from, only to find he wasn’t there. He glanced around at the vast endless space, fog drifted around his legs, the deafening silence, painful in his ears.
“Steve.” Sav called out in the eerie grayness. “Steve where are you?”
‘My time is growing short here. I’ve helped you all I can.’
“Wait…don…Steve don’t leave me here alone!” Sav took a step back as he appeared before him again.
A smile spread across his face. ‘You’ve never been alone. I have always been there just lurking in the shadows of your mind.’
“What happens now?”
‘We don’t know what’s going to happen in the future anymore.’
“You told me you knew what the future held.”
‘We changed that by helping Joe to find you.’
Sav once again looked behind Steve, to see his pale, battered body enfolded tightly in Joe’s arms. “I..I though you cou…”
‘We may have changed the future, but Joe will always be your destiny.’ Steve reached up and brushed his cool fingers over Sav’s cheek. ‘Now, I really must go.’
“I d.don’t know if I want to go back.”
