Whispering and uncoherent words disturbing my slumber brought me back to reality, the realm of dreams forgotten as sunlight, of all things, pierced my eyes. The fear running through me causing me to shudder, curling into a tight ball, in hope of protecting myself. A soft, endearing laughter ringing across the clearing that I have forgotten about through the night. “Ville, you’re not going to burn, relax! Enjoy the rays of the sun!” a soft voice breaks through the natural instinct of panic, the one fear burned into my mind from day one in Harms castle. “Ashley?” I whisper as I struggle to get my eyes open, the sun stinging my green eyes as I try to focus on the soft voice. “Yeah, it’s me Ville, the others went to some place called Reykjavìk or something to find clothes, we can’t walk around like this! The humans would notice!” Ashley explains softly, a giggle out of joy escaping my lips as I think about new, clean clothes. The rags I’m wearing at the moment barely covering the important parts. “How will they do that unnoticed?” I ask as soon as the thought hits me, the others not looking any more decent than me. “Burton can apparently trick people’s mind and distort their sight, the demons were the ones who thought out the plan actually! They’re eager to get away from here, and they can’t stop talking about your green flames in the sky!” Ashley laughs softly, his eyes trailing towards the horizon, looking lost in thought. “You’re thinking about Andy again, aren’t you?” I ask softly, the eyes of the angel quickly darting towards me. “Yeah, I’ve missed him for so long, I just hope he remembers me!” Ashley barely whispers, a tear sliding down his tanned cheek glittering as the sun catches it. “He’ll remember you sweetheart! Andy doesn’t seem like the kind to forget easily!” My words aimed to comfort my friend, and all of them true! Andy never struck me as the type to give up and forget, he did speak about his friends after all! I barely get the chance to shoot a smile at Ashley before hollering and laughter break the silence around us. Our new comrades coming into view between the rock formations sheltering us from view. All of them carrying weird bags filled to the brim with stuff. “That Burton demon sure have some amazing skills! Look at all this! We got clothes!” The laughing angel called CC shouts towards us as we rise to meet them, the whole bunch all sporting huge smiles on their faces. “Stop shouting and give him the bag CC!” Jinxx laughs softly before walking towards Ashley, the angel handing over a big white bag as CC gives me one of my own. “So, one last dip in the hot spring before we get presentable?” Lauri suggests as he reaches me. “Sounds like a wonderful idea darling! I think the rest agrees too?” I smirk at the gleaming faces around us, a wave of childish joy suddenly crashing down on them all as they start running towards the water. Shouts of glee once again sounding through the air, such simple things as being clean making them all so happy. Just the pure thought of what they all went through in those dungeons are enough to make me cringe! I will never again let anyone hurt them, never! “Ville, I don’t know what you’re thinking about, but you need to calm down! Your eyes are black and red again, and the grass you’re standing on just froze to death!” Lauri states calmly, breaking my train of thoughts. “Sorry sweetheart! Just thinking about the prison, and how they were all treated!” I smile carefully at the angel, him just nodding in reply, understanding shining through his eyes. “I’ll help you keep them all safe, and Varis too! But now, let’s go and clean up and try on the new clothes!” Lauri smirks motioning for the spring in the distance. “Let’s go!” I smirk back as I start walking, the laughter of the others growing stronger with every step I take towards them, relieving the anger in my heart towards the white angels, even just for a moment.
***********
“What are these?” Linde giggles while holding up a pair of really short and thin black trousers, the rest of us looking at the garment on display. “I have no idea elf! The lady at what they called a store said they were ‘undergarments’! I guess they’re going under everything else!” Burton laughs softly while rummaging through his own bag, pulling out and studying all the items. “oh, ok!” Linde giggles once more as he pulls them on, finally figuring out after trial and error that they go up the legs and not the arms. “No leather?” I ask puzzled as I pull out a pair of black pants, the material soft to the touch, but not the slick black of the leather I’m used to. “They didn’t have any, sorry Ville!” Jinxx chimes in, now fully dressed in black from head to toe. “It’s ok, these will do just fine!” I laugh as I pull them on, the soft fabric clinging to my legs, at least one thing is familiar! Fully dressed in the pants, a red shirt and something called converse covering my feet, I turn to the others. “So, anyone thought about makeup?” I giggle while arching a brow, Lauri laughing in return as he pulls out another bag, handing me a black pencil. Five angels looking towards me in awe as I put the black object against my face, lining my eyes with ease. “You’re used to wearing that stuff, aren’t you?” Gas asks suddenly, his whole face showing his confusion. “I’m a vampire sweetheart! We do what we can to look alive!” I laugh, the black angels chuckling along with me. “Did you bring enough black goop for us too Destroyer? I miss my war paint!” Ashley snickers wickedly as CC grins like a lunatic. “Haven’t heard that name in a while Deviant! But the Mourner remembered! We got enough for us all and a few more!” “What are they talking about Ville?” Burton asks carefully, the demon suddenly appearing at my side with Mige, Linde and Gas right behind. “They’re rebels, fallen angels as you know! But other than that, I have no clue!” I chuckle as I look towards the black angels. All of them diving into pots of inky black paint while giggling hysterically, Lauri standing beside them just watching. The innocent looking guys turning into something twisted before our very eyes, black lines and markings soon covering them head to toe. Ash jumping off the ground and walking towards us having Burton giggling. “What? Never seen an angel being bad?” Ash giggles, making the two demons laugh out loud. “No! And we can understand why you didn’t fit in up there! The other angels must have gotten heartburn with guys like you destroying their picture perfect world!” Gas smirks while patting Ashleys shoulder. “Well, I can see why you two were thrown out of hell! You’re bad at being bad!” CC barks out laughing! “And we’re proud of it!” Gas bellows, the giant demon grabbing CC by the neck before rustling his messy black hair. The black strands looking more like a rats nest as he’s let go again, the angel shooting the demons a bright smile. “Hi! That hair looks good! Do me too!” Jinxx laughs before him and Jake tackles the gentle giant to the ground, the rest of the *grownups* stepping back a bit to not get dragged into the laughing mess of limbs in the grass. “Calm down sweethearts!” I giggle as I reach out for Gas’s hand, hauling the huge demon of the ground with ease, the gentle giant smirking. “Now, if you are all finished playing around, maybe we should start moving?” I smirk at them before looking into the horizon, my instincts picking up the direction we need to go easily. “We’re ready, and we’ll follow you!” Burton states calmly with Linde smiling brightly from his side, the rest of them following behind, all ready to leave. “Well then, we better figure out how fast everyone is, and what’s the best way to travel!” CC giggles, his eyes gleaming with mischief. “Let’s have a race!” “Well darlings, that sounds like a good idea! Lauri, is there any landmarks in that direction?” I chuckle while pointing towards our destination. “There’s an active volcano a few miles that way, we can use that!” The angel smiles brightly while pointing towards a big black cloud in the horizon. “Well then darlings! Get ready!” I giggle, giving them a flash of fangs as I crouch down, letting my inner beast take control. “On the count of three! One, two, three!” CC laughs, bright flashing lights and black flames suddenly mingling among us. Big black feather wings and something resembling batwings sprouting out of the angels and demons backs. My own still hidden and Linde and Mige just smirking as they take off running. My thoughts lost as I let my long legs carry me at a so called slow pace. The mismatched rumble of creatures shooting towards the volcano in the distance.
“You know, those wings of yours are really impressive, but I thought we would have more of a challenge keeping up with you all!” Mige bellows as his bulky frame shoots past CC, the angel looking shocked at the taurus speed. “Never knew you could run like that Mige!” I laugh as I join his side, smirking wickedly as Linde joins us, the elf’s feet seeming to float above the ground. “Let’s see if you can keep up with the vampire!” I giggle, adding some more speed as I shoot past them, still not going as fast as I know I can go. “Eat my dust!” I giggle, before leaving them all behind. Angels and demons included.
*********
“God, this place smells like Jonne!” I exclaim loudly as I come to a halt at the ash covered ground, the bubbling sound of molten rock and boiling water surrounding me just as much as the stench. My eyes quickly adjusting to the mist cloaked surroundings, letting me pinpoint small dots in the distance, growing bigger by the seconds passing. The area around me mapped out in mere seconds, no dangers worth keeping an eye on letting me sone in on a rock perfect to sit on, a few meters away from the bubbling water spewing fumes smelling like hell itself. The first sound reaching me being the one of flapping wings, the proud black crow landing perfectly at my outstretched arm. “A good second Varis!” I chuckle, earning a black eyed stare and a ruffling of feathers as an answer. His master stumbling towards me as a good nr three. “Varis beat you Lauri!” I giggle, looking at the panting angel, his knees buckling before sitting cross legged on the ground. “Don’t even!” The angel moans out before falling on his back, heaving for breath. A couple more dots getting closer in the distance. “Get your rest darling, CC and Jinx will be here in a few seconds!” Said angels stumbling towards us as soon as I finish my sentence. “How the hell can you run that fast Ville?” Cc chokes out before collapsing next to Lauri on the ground, Jinx following suit. “Vampire sweetheart! The perfect predator!” I chuckle softly, waving at the rest in the horizon, one by one they fall into heaving heaps on the ash covered ground. Linde looking no worse for wear among the rest though, his blond hair not even dampened by sweat. “Elf, no bodyweight!” Mige snickers as said elf takes a rest beside me on the rock, the long slender legs crossed at the ankles. “I might not be the fastest, but I can outlast most of you!” The blond pipes up carefully, his pointed ears turning a pale pink. “We don’t doubt you!” Burton snickers, the demons smirk accompanied by his black eyes almost looking dangerous, but a small twinkle of mischief shining through have us all laughing. The hidden inuendo not going unnoticed, we’ve all heard stories about the elf race! “Ash, thought you’d never make it!” Jinx suddenly spurts as another dark shadow approaches, everyone turning silent at the seriousness behind his eyes. “Ville, we need help, Jake failed to mention they broke his wing! He can’t fly! Gas is watching over him at the moment, they’re just a few miles away! But we need someone to reset the wing before we can move him!” “Lauri, you’re the only healer here, let’s go!” The angel sending me a penetrating glance. “Ville, ice, red eyes, calm down.” His words hitting like hot pokers in my heart as I see the rest of our companions, wide eyed and shivering, the ground covered in a thin layer of ice.
“Sorry sweethearts! I guess my temper got the best of me again!” I smile weakly while taking a few calming breaths, hoping it will bring my eyes back to normal. “Why Ville?” Linde whispers carefully, most likely afraid to offend me. “I can’t help it, it’s my instincts. When I think about all the hurt you all went through, I can’t hold it back. I’m a mix of too many elements, and the blood of Harms burns with a vengeance when I think about all the pain they put you through.” I speak as softly as I can, trying not to frighten the elf more than I already have. Linde looking thoughtful for a moment before smiling warmly. “I guess we just have to get used to the earth freezing and your eyes changing then! If that’s the reason, I’m not afraid!” The elf’s smile turning into a bright happy one. “I thought satan himself could get angry, but I guess the old geezer has something to learn!” Burton burst out laughing, earning a giggle from the rest. “Well, the self-righteous might seem scary while angry, but true hatred can only be felt by those with a heart! And that anger is something people should fear!” Lauri states calmly as he stands up slowly, his legs still shaking a bit after the long run. “Well, you, my sweethearts, just relax and stay here for a bit! We’ll be back soon!” I smile at them lovingly before looking to Lauri. “Get on my back sweetheart, it’s going to be a fast run!” I chuckle, the angels eyes widening. “Are you sure Ville?” Lauri asks carefully, a slight blush dusting his cheeks. “Come on sweetheart! Get on!” I giggle while crouching down, one knee on the ground and my back towards him. The fallen angel carefully climbing on after a bit of consideration. “Hold on tight sweetheart! I won’t take it easy this time!” I state before getting up, his arms tightening around my neck, as well as his legs around my waist. “We’ll be back as soon as we can!” I smile brightly towards the others before turning away, letting my inner demon take control once more, my legs moving as they had a will of their own. The speed being nothing the angel has ever even dreamed off before. Grass and ashes flying past us in a blur, the only thing staying a clear shade being the blue skies above us.
My eyes catching the shadows hunched down on the ground have me slowing my pace, even though we left the others barely minutes ago. My feet coming to a halt in front of Gas, the demon looking at me with worry painted across his face. “He’s not able to fly, it’s bad!” The demon states sadly, looking towards Jake, the angel lying on the ground, his breath ragged and face showing the excruciating pain he’s in. Wings sprawled out on the ground, the left one looking beautiful, black feathers glimmering in black and blue under the sun. The right one, torn half to pieces, bloodied and in an angle that shouldn’t be possible. “Why didn’t you tell us sweetheart?” I ask, locking eyes with the angel. “I forgot how bad it was, it doesn’t hurt when they’re hidden.” “Well, we’re gonna have to try straightening it Jake, this is gonna hurt like a bitch!” Lauri states calmly, eying the broken mass of feathers and bones. His small frame sinking to the ground before gentle hands starts prodding at the wounds and peeling away feathers, all sticky with dried blood. “Gas, there’s a spring coming up over there, can you carry him for me? And Ville, I’m gonna need the both of you if we’re going to straighten this out.” Lauri states calmly, taking control of the situation at hand. Gas, the gigantic demon carefully plucking the angel off the ground, his big rough hands making Jake look like a tiny bird. And having us all wondering about the demon, this gentle giant. Catching us staring at him, the giant just smiles warmly. “Too wicked for heaven, too kind for hell.” He shrugs before walking off towards the small spring in the distance. I can’t help but smile at his back.
*********
“Where do you want him, Lauri?” Gas asks as soon as he sees the angel, Lauri already washing his hands in the almost boiling water. “Right there, on the grass, it’s easier to keep it clean there.” Lauri points towards the patch of green among the stones and ashes. “So, what do you need us to do sweetheart?” I motion towards Jake, the angel lying perfectly still on the ground, the demon beside him watching his every breath. “Both of you, go wash your hands. The less dirt the better. I’m gonna start cleaning the wounds.” “Alright, clean hands it is!” Gas states before getting off the ground, his movements fluid like a snake despite his heavy frame. “Now what?” I ask as I take my seat opposite Lauri, the angel pouring water on a rag and dabbing carefully at the blood soaked feathers. “wouldn’t it be easier if we just pored water on the wing? Just getting the whole thing in one go?” Gas suddenly asks, his eyes darting between Lauri’s face and the dirty rag. “If I carry him, Ville steadies the wing and you pour the water, it should be easy.” “I think you might be right Gas, lets try it!” Lauri smiles, nodding towards me. Gas gingerly picking up the angel as I get a grip on the broken wing. The sound of broken bones sliding making me wince, I can only imagine the pain Jake must be feeling. The angels face now damp with sweat and white as a sheet. “Jake? Are you alright sweetheart?” I ask softly, only getting a muffled groan in reply. “Ok, let’s try this then! You got a good grip Ville?” “As good as it can get, I’m afraid of doing more damage.” “can’t get much worse than it is.” Gas buts inn with a dry chuckle. “You ready?” Lauri asks, his eyes focusing on the wing. “Yeah, go ahead Lauri.” The angel wasting no time before starting the clean up. Scooping handfuls of near boiling water over the black feathers, a red mushy mess dripping to the ground. Gas was right, this does work better and we can soon see the open wounds. Ugly gashes with white bones poking through, but at least they’re clean now. “I think that’s as clean as it will get.” Lauri states calmly, his nose scrunching up in disgust at what the water revealed. “Now we just have to straighten it out, pop the smaller bones into place, and close up the wounds. I have no idea how we’re gonna do the last part, but we have to try. Now, carry him back to the grass and lay him down.” Lauri orders, the demon obeying without question and me steadying the wing following carefully. “Ok, Ville! Take a hold of the base of the wing, as close to his back as possible. Gas, grab the tip right before where the bone ends, hold on tightly. I’m gonna support the joint and realign the bones. When I say pull, start pulling slowly but firmly. Ville, make sure his torso is perfectly still and press it down towards the ground. Now, pull gas!” Lauri orders, his eyes glues to the open wounds at the joint and his fingers searching franticly underneath the skin, poking and prodding through the flesh and guiding the broken bones back into place. A loud pop and satisfied sigh sounding as the bones are realigned. Lauris hands quickly going to the next wound, same routine as the first. Digging through the flesh and bending the broken pieces into place. The angel falling backwards to the ground from his hunched position, bloody hands resting above his head. “Now all we need is some way of closing the wounds.” Lauri sighs, his brows furrowed. “We could burn them closed?” Gas suddenly asks, Laurie’s eyes shooting open and the angel jumps off the ground eagerly. “that’s a great idea Gas! We just need something to set on fire! And something metal to cauterize the wounds!” “No need for all that, I can do it, you just have to keep the feathers out of my way!” Gas smirks as he raises a hand towards the skie, flicking his wrist. Blue and white flames engulfing his hand the heat enough to make me turn my face away, and I’m not even that close. “That’s great sweetheart! We didn’t know you could do that!” “To be honest Ville, I forgot! We weren’t able to use it in the prison because of the angel spells keeping us immobile. And I never really found a good use for hellfire, before now!” Gas laughs, his kind eyes crinkling at the corners and his small sharklike teeth glimmering in a huge smile. “Too kind for hell indeed.” A hoarse voice suddenly pipes up, Jakes head turning towards Gas with a small smile in his pale face. “My wing already feels better, what did you three do to it?” “Lauri realigned the bones while Gas and I pulled it straight. The bones should all be back where they belong, and hopefully you’ll be able to fly again soon sweetheart!” I smile at the angel, his tired eyes looking between us all. “And now you’re gonna do some more healing, using hellfire I guess. Go for it, I trust you Gas! Just don’t make my wing go bald!” The Angel chuckle softly, winking at Gas before closing his eyes once more, his breathing slowing down as he falls back asleep. “Ok, I guess I’m the doctor now!” Gas chuckles. “I think I’ll need your help for this Ville, you can stand the heat better than Lauri.” “Good idea Gas, Ville? Try thinking about what happened to Jake and why, and try focusing it in your hands. The ice should keep you from getting burned, and the feathers from melting!” Lauri states matter of factly while studying the wing. “I’ll try sweetheart!” I chuckle softly, the anger and hate towards the white angels boiling in the pit of my stomach. I can feel the grass beneath me freezing and see the white puffs of air from Jakes mouth as I focus on my task. Forcing the cold towards my arms and hands. It might seem easy to you all, but have you ever tried focusing all your anger on one specific thing? “I think I’ve got it.” I say before raking my fingers through the feathers around the biggest wound, peeling them away from the jagged edges so Gas can work freely. “You better do it now sweetheart, the skin is turning blue” I hiss out between my teeth, keeping the cold contained claiming my whole attention. Gas quickly getting to work, his left hand pinching the edges together as he runs his flaming right hand across the wound. The smell of burning meat is almost unbearable, stinging my nose. But the demon did a good job, the wound reduced to a thin line. “Next one!” Gas orders as I move towards another gash, a routine established, me peeling away the feathers and Gas doing his thing. Only a couple of minutes later, and we’re all done. “Go wash up Ville, you’re looking kind of green!” Gas smirks before standing back up, his heavy frame looming above the angel on the ground. “Good idea sweetheart” I chuckle softly, swallowing at the bile rising in my throat. A vampire’s sense of smell can easily become a curse. The burning flesh of your enemies won’t bother you, but the one of those you care about is awful. “Should we get moving then?” Gas asks as soon as I get back. His eyes locked on the horizon. “We won’t be able to move too quickly, but I can carry him.” The demon states, looking towards Lauri and I. “Sure, lets get going. The wounds are already healing, and the bones should stay in place as long as we don’t jerk him around.” Lauri answers and I nod in agreement. “Let’s get going, the others are waiting.” I smirk at the trio behind me. Gas standing there with a limp, sleeping angel in his arms. And Lauri checking the wing once more, a satisfied nod, and we start moving.
***********
We’ve been walking for hours. The last rays of the sun disappeared in the horizon hours ago, the starry skies and moon lighting our way. The scares light just strong enough for my companions to see their surroundings and ground beneath their feet. “Sweethearts, I can see a campfire in the distance. Do you feel strong enough to up the tempo Jake?” I ask quietly. The angel, now on his own two feet, but steadied by Gas just nodding in reply. None of us making unnecessary noise in the darkness. “Ok, lets go sweethearts!” I smirk as I put some more speed into my strides, the three of us moving at human pace, but a bit more rushed than before. The tiny flame in the distance growing larger as the minutes pass us by, and the outline of our companions greeting us.
“Almost there sweethearts!” I whisper happily, smirking as I can see Mige’s bushy head turning towards us. The taurus’s hearing almost as good as mine. Three shadows coming towards us at fast pace. CC being the first to greet us with Jinx and Ash right behind.
“How is he? How’s the wing?” Ashley asks as soon as he stops in front of us. Jinx and CC both looking towards Gas and their friend. “I’ll survive guys, don’t worry so much!” Jake chuckles weakly, the angel about to fall asleep on his feet. “No falling to the ground now!” Gas laughs as he hoists the angel back on his feet and pulling him closer in a more secure grip, Jake almost disappearing against the giant. “Let’s get going, we’re almost at the camp. We could all use some rest sweethearts!” I chuckle at my companions as I start walking towards the campfire. The others falling in behind me on the path, whispering amongst themselves. Filling each other in on the events of the day.
***********
I can feel the heat of the fire as soon as I step into the makeshift camp, people scootching closer together around the flames to make room for the rest of us. A tired Jake being lowered to the ground carefully by Gas, the demon claiming a space right beside him. “Thanks Gas” the angel mutters before yawning. Falling sideways only to get captured by the demons huge arm. “Always knew you were more of a teddy bear than a demon Gas!” Burton chuckles, his eyes looking softer than they should. “You´re one to speak? You´ve been entertaining the younglings all day! You should have seen them Gas!” Linde suddenly pipes up, his cheeks dusted in pink as always. The elf being naturally shy. “Oh, I believe you elf! We would both make awesome nannies!” Gas laughs warmly as Jake snuggles in closer, the fallen angel looking more like a small child than ever. “Too wicked for heaven, too kind for hell!” I chuckle as I look towards them both. The warmth radiating through the camp making us all relax. “Let´s get some sleep sweethearts, it´s been a long day, and we should get going in the morning. There´s still a long way ahead.” I smile at them as I rise to my feet and stretch out my back. My joints are feeling weird after the wings tore through my skin, like everything’s been shifted around. I guess it´s normal, who wouldn’t feel weird after suddenly growing a new set of limbs? “I´ll take the first watch” I state softly before anyone else get the chance, letting the others settle down around the fire before I slide down against a huge boulder just outside the circle. The spot letting me see freely in every direction, my ears only picking up the soft snores and breathing of my comrades, and I let my eyes stray towards the skies. The twinkling stars reminding me of Bam, my soulmate on the other side of the sea.
