Chapter 32
The Friday after Thanksgiving
*****************
While David had gone to the desk to cancel his flight and make reservations for them both on the Sunday afternoon flight, James had been going over the events of the last twenty fours hours in his head.
“But why were you on your way back to LA?” James asked as they walked through the lounge.
“Because you were,” David replied. “I couldn’t let you spend the rest of the holiday on your own.”
“Your parents must have been very upset that you were leaving early. I’m sorry I spoiled their Thanksgiving.”
“They weren’t and you didn’t, Baby… and they’ll be overjoyed to get to meet you after all.”
James linked David’s arm and led him out of the main thoroughfare toward an unused gate.
“But I don’t understand. You mean you were willing to give up the rest of your weekend for me?” James asked in astonishment.
“Of course, Baby…” David said.
James looked up at David’s adoring face. He couldn’t believe how lucky he was to have fallen in love with this amazing man not to mention how lucky he was to be loved in return.
“You’re the most important person in my life now,” David said, softly.
“I am?”
James swallowed. He wondered just how much he did mean to David. Was it too much to hope David’s feelings might run as deep as his own?
David was leaning toward him. He was going to kiss him.
“David, we can’t,” James said, taking a step backwards and glancing over his shoulder at the other passengers drifting by. “Not here…”
David stepped closer and pulled him into his arms.
“…People will see us.”
“Let them. I love you, James, and I don’t care who knows it.”
As they kissed, James heard the odd snigger, a giggle or two, a few Ooos and Ahs and then there was silence as he lost himself in David’s embrace. It was just the two of them. He was in the arms of his lover once more and that was exactly where he wanted to be.
****************
“Almost there now,” David said, pulling off the main highway onto one of the back roads. “We’re about five miles from the house.”
James was none too sure he’d have managed to find it on his own even if he’d had the address.
“Shouldn’t we phone and warn them we’re coming?” James asked.
“I thought we’d surprise them.”
“Are you sure they won’t mind?” James asked. “I mean, they might have made other plans by now…”
“Don’t worry, Baby. Even if they have they won’t mind changing them again when they see us.”
James was getting kind of anxious. He didn’t want to disappoint David or his family.
“What if they don’t like me?”
What if he didn’t like them? But they couldn’t be as bad as his own family. That would be impossible… He hoped.
“They will…”
“You can’t be sure of that.”
“Yes, I can…”
“So, they like all the friends you bring home then?”
“No, but…”
“Ah! See…”
“… but they weren’t you,” David said.
“… And don’t forget, this is the first time you’ve brought a boyfriend home to meet them,” James continued. “I am the first boyfriend you’ve brought home, aren’t I?” James added.
David pulled off the road and stopped the car.
“Yes, Baby, you know you are. You’re my only boyfriend.”
“And they’re okay with you being gay?”
“Yes. In fact, Mom said she’d been wondering if I was for some time. Dad was kinda surprised at first… but they’ve been really supportive… They’re not judgmental, James. They never have been. They’ve always accepted me for who I am… No one’s gonna treat you like Simon did…”
“I wasn’t expecting they would - ‘Intolerance’ has always been Simon’s middle name - but there’s a big difference between accepting a situation and merely tolerating it… I bet they’d rather you were bringing home a new girlfriend…”
Silence.
David wasn’t denying it so he must believe it to be true. James didn’t doubt that David had loving parents who idolised their only son but that didn’t mean they’d automatically take him into the bosom of their family. They probably thought it was just a phase David was going through… that he’d come to his senses in a few weeks and next time he visited he’d be accompanied by some young film starlet or centrefold playmate…
David switched the engine off and leaned across to slip an arm along the back of James’ seat.
“James, please believe me when I say they’ll like you. They know how much you mean to me…”
“They do?”
“Of course… How can they fail to like someone who makes their son happy?”
James had to admit David had a point there.
“And Mom is already a fan of Spike so how can she fail to be impressed by the real you? I might have to fight her for you.”
“Oh, God! A fifty-something groupie. That’s all I need,” James chuckled.
“I think Bo kinda likes the character too…”
“So, this is gonna be like one of those fan conventions we’re going to?”
“Well, I’m not sure about Beth,” David said. “I know she’s seen the odd episode but I don’t think she actually watches the show regularly.”
“Thank God for that. I thought I was gonna be spending all my time signing autographs… I was starting to think leaving Modesto hadn’t been such a smart move after all…”
