“Dude,” Jimmy frowned as he walked up to Matt. “You could’ve told me. And, I wouldn’t have looked like such a douche.”
“What,” Matt asked completely clueless.
“Oh, come on. The reason Kelly’s here…”
Just then Matt’s phone went off. He reached his belt and saw the name. “Sorry, man. It’s Carrie. Let me get this and we’ll talk in a sec.” He was very thankful at Carrie’s timing considering he didn’t want to have that conversation with Jimmy. Well, the news wasn’t really his to share. He’d have to tell Carrie so she could deal with it.
“Matt,” he heard over the line. He could sense something was up just by the way she said his name.
“I’ll be right there,” he answered knowingly before hanging up. “Gotta go. But we’ll catch up when I get back.”
“Alright,” Jimmy shrugged.
=========
“What’s going on,” Matt asked concerned as he stepped on the bus. He walked up to the table where the girls were sitting hunched over Kelly’s laptop.
“I can’t believe they got those pictures,” Kelly shook her head.
“Oh, shit,” Matt whispered. “It’s out?” He braced himself for the news he’d hoped would remain quiet.
“Um, well,” Carrie shifted and turned to him. “Not exactly. Here,” she turned Kelly’s laptop to face him as he read the screen. “Surprise: What do Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood have in common? It's not just Idol.” He glanced up at her.
“Just read,” Carrie sighed, running her hand through her hair.
He turned his attention back to the words. “Spotted: Original American Idol Kelly Clarkson must be closer to her fellow Idol Carrie Underwood than we thought. She was seen at one of the country superstar’s recent shows. We are intrigued as Carrie usually stashes her dates on the sound boards. The next Sam and Linds? We doubt it, but sources also confirm that they were seen together in Australia. We think this new friendship is just a cover. For what, you ask? Well, we’re not sure, but click below for pictures of Kelly getting up close and personal with Carrie’s assistant. Maybe she’s moved on and found a decent guy after all. What do you think, love match or no?”
Matt’s jaw dropped as he finished reading. “What the…?” The girls shared a laugh at his reaction.
“Yeah,” Kelly shook her head. “See,” she shifted the laptop so they could all look at it. “Someone must have recognized me at the show last night.” She scrolled down further so Matt could see the thumbnails. They were pictures of the two of them
standing by the sound boards watching Carrie onstage.
Matt shook his head in disbelief. “Wow. They don’t waste any time, do they?”
Carrie frowned. “No, definitely not.”
“But where do they get that we,” he motioned between him and Kelly. “Are a couple? I mean, they’re hinting at you two.”
Kelly laughed. “Oh, here.” She clicked on a small image that showed her with her arm around Matt, leaning into his ear. “I think it was when I was asking you to take me backstage. I leaned up close, and of course, they snapped the picture at that right second.”
Matt scoffed. “Figures.”
“So,” Carrie began tentatively. “What should we do?”
“I’m not sure,” Matt answered honestly. “But it does explain my encounter with Jimmy earlier.”
Carrie laughed. “What happened?”
Matt smiled amused. “He was grilling me about why Kelly was here.”
“That’s it,” the Texan spoke up.
Both Matt and Carrie turned to her. “What is,” Carrie frowned at her girlfriend.
“Matt,” Kelly smiled at him. “So, you wanna be my boyfriend?”
His eyes grew wide as Carrie practically choked. “What,” the blonde began to protest.
“No, see,” the Texan looked over reassuringly at Carrie. “Think about it. If people think I’m dating Matt, it gives us the perfect cover. I get to be around and no one’s gonna question it too much. What do y’all think?”
Carrie frowned. “I don’t know that I like that idea…”
“I know,” Kelly sighed. “But, at this point, my being around is now public knowledge among the gossips. So it’s either that…or that People cover.”
Carrie smiled sadly. She knew Kelly was right. They weren’t ready to declare their relationship to the world. Their siblings and certain friends knew, but it wasn’t something they wanted their parents to find out through the media. She’d already had to dispel a few rumors her mom was told by friends and family.
“Fine,” she sighed. “Only if he agrees, though.”
Matt nodded. “Well, I’m not too fond of the being a part of the gossip. But I guess there are worse things than being thought to be your boyfriend.”
“Hey,” Carrie pouted before Kelly could speak up. “That’s my girlfriend you’re talking about.” Kelly giggled at the blonde.
“I know. Which is why I’ll do it….for y’all. But you know, this is only a temporary solution, right?”
Both girls looked at each other nervously. Neither one was fond of lying, but for the time being it was the best solution. It would buy them time until they could figure out the best way to deal with the situation.
“So,” Matt looked at Carrie. “What should I tell Jimmy?”
The blonde sighed. Her fiddler player’s interest in Kelly was amusing at first, but now she really had to think about it. She took a deep breath as she turned to the Texan. “I think I should tell my band anyway.”
“But, Care,” Kelly began to protest, but stopped when Carrie nodded.
“Kel, I don’t want to lie. Not to them. We’ve all been through a lot as a group, I don’t wanna betray that.”
“Carrie,” Matt warned. “I know how you feel about them, but the more people know, the worse it will be to keep this under wraps.”
“I know,” she frowned. “But I really don’t think I could keep up the charade around the people I see more than my family sometimes. We can still pretend y’all are together when outside the bubble.”
“Babe,” Kelly took her hand, making the blonde’s head turn. “Are you sure about the band? I mean, we’ve come up with a solution for now. And not everyone’s gonna be as supportive about us as what we’ve experienced so far…”
Carrie ran the thumb over Kelly’s knuckles. “I know that. But do you know how hard it would be for me having to see you and Matt together when we’re around our people?” She shook her head. “I mean, I know you guys aren’t, but it’s already been two days of torture not being able to just hold your hand or give you a hug when I wanted to.”
Kelly melted at the admission. She knew they were in for some hard times, but as she stared into those gorgeous hazel eyes, she felt a sense of calmness. She took a deep breath to keep her tears at bay. “Okay. I will support whatever you decide to do.”
The blonde smiled as she whispered. “I love you. It’s all that matters.”
Kelly leaned forward with the intention of kissing Carrie’s cheek, but she was caught off guard as the blonde’s lips captured hers. It was a slow, gentle kiss full of love and reassurances. After a few seconds, she pulled back blushing.
The blonde noticed. “What,” Carrie smiled as she leaned her forehead against Kelly’s.
“Nothing,” Kelly smiled back, her eyes twinkling. “It’s…just…the first time we kiss in front of anyone,” she whispered.
“Oh,” Carrie pulled back, suddenly feeling embarrassed. “I’m sorry.”
The Texan barely shook her head holding her gaze. “Don’t apologize. It feels nice. I love you. And I kinda think he knows, anyway,” she teased.
Matt stood there, feeling quite awkward, but happy for his friend. “Um,” he spoke up making them turn to him. “I think I’m gonna go,” he motioned with his thumb. “Give you girls some privacy.”
“No, it’s ok,” Carrie glanced behind him as her tour manager was tapped the window and motioned to his wrist watch, signaling show time was rapidly approaching.
“Crap,” Matt frowned as he turned and saw him. “Yeah, gotta go!”
Carrie stood as she walked up to Matt. “Thanks,” she gave him a hug. “For everything.”
“No problem, kiddo,” he shrugged.
“Are you coming,” Carrie asked as she noticed Kelly didn’t move from her spot.
“I think maybe I should wait here…”
“But,” Carrie pouted and sighed. “Nevermind. I guess it makes sense….I mean, unless you wanna show off your boyfriend.”
Kelly stood and shoved her playfully. “Oh, yeah,” she quickly pulled her into a hug. “I’ll show you boyfriend,” she joked
leaning in.
“Ahem,” Matt lowly cleared his throat. “I’m still here!”
The girls pulled apart giggling. “I’m sorry, hon,” Kelly smirked as she patted his shoulder. “Just had to wish her a good show.”
Matt laughed as he attempted to guide Carrie out of the bus. “I’m glad you decided to tell the band.”
“Why’s that, “ she asked confused.
“Cause there is no way y’all can keep your relationship a secret from anyone who’s around you more than a minute.”
Carrie smiled as she gave Kelly a quick kiss before following Matt out of the bus. “See ya in a while.”
“K, have fun,” Kelly waved from the bus, kneeling down to catch Ace before he ran after Carrie.
======
“So,” Garrett asked. “What’s up?” Matt had gathered all the band members in the back room after the group prayer. They were stuck waiting for Carrie. She was holed up in her dressing room retouching her makeup one last time.
“Carrie wanted me to ask you guys to come to her bus at the end of the show.”
Jamie frowned. “That’s different. Something wrong?”
Matt sighed. “No, she just wants to hang and catch up a bit.”
“Cool,” Jimmy nodded. “So, where’s Kelly,” he stared pointedly at Matt.
“She’s hanging in Carrie’s bus. Keeping Ace company, I guess.”
Jimmy shrugged. “You know, for your girlfriend, she sure does spend a lot of time with Carrie…”
The whole band turned to Matt in disbelief. He put his hand over his forehead not knowing exactly what to say. He took a deep breath, stalling for some time.
“What?” Jamie’s jaw dropped. “Kelly Clarkson?”
“Dude!” Garrett laughed, ready to give him a high five. “You serious?”
Matt finally spoke up. “Hold on, hold on,” he raised his hand. “Kelly is here because she is Carrie’s friend.”
Just as he was about to continue with the explanation, Carrie emerged from her dressing room. Before any more could be said, the tour manager was shouting for them down the hall. “GUYS!”
“But,” Jamie whined. “I wanna know about this Kelly thing!”
“We’ll talk after,” Matt explained. “Have a great show, y’all!”
======
Carrie paced around her room in the bus, trying to think of a way to share everything with the band. She’d pondered how she would address everything once their relationship became public but wasn’t sure now that the moment was in front of her.
Kelly sat on her bed watching her carefully. She was letting her get it out of her system before she finally reached for her. “Care,” Kelly asked tentatively, taking her hand and stopping her mid-stride.
“Hmm,” the blonde came out of her haze.
The Texan didn’t answer, just stood from her spot and wrapped her arms around Carrie. She held her close and took a deep breath. Carrie followed her lead and it helped her relax.
“I needed that,” Carrie smiled.
“Me too,” Kelly answered simply, still holding on to her, gently caressing her cheek.
“I’m scared,” the blonde finally admitted. Kelly nodded, encouraging her to continue.
“I mean,” Carrie looked down. “This is real. It’s gonna be real…”
Kelly wasn’t sure how to take that. She’d always had a fear in the pit of her stomach that Carrie could freak out when the weight of reality finally came. “Yeah,” she whispered. She wasn’t sure what to say, and didn’t want to make the situation worse.
Carrie lifted her head in time to catch Kelly’s eyes and immediately read the fear in her girlfriend’s eyes. “No,” she grabbed Kelly’s chin. “I’m not backing out,” she reassured her. “I love you, Kel. That’s not up for debate..and neither is staying together.”
Kelly let out a breath she didn’t notice she’d been holding. “Really?”
“Yes, silly,” Carrie spoke softly. “I’m just a little afraid, but it’s not about us…it’s about everyone else.”
“I know,” Kelly finally relaxed. “I’m afraid too, you know. But I’m not one to give up. And I’ll stand with you for as long as you want me.”
"Good. 'Cause I'm about to start putting it all out there...and I kinda wanna be with you for a long, long time." Carrie leaned forward to place the gentlest of kisses on Kelly’s lips.
“Are you ready,” the Texan asked when they finally pulled apart.
“Yep,” Carrie took Kelly’s hand in hers and squeezed it as she walked towards the door.
