Everlasting Love(Pt32)
Joe was stepping out of the enclosed shower, bare chest and jeans still unbuttoned, vigorously drying his hair with a towel. Nick watched him while tugging the cuffs of the long sleeve black silk shirt he wore, pulling them straight after he put his dinner jacket back on. Combing his fingers through damp blond hair, trying to tame the unruly curls after his own shower.
Joe draped the towel from a hook imbedded in the stone wall, grabbed is shirt and turned around to catch Nick staring at him. “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Nick shrugged slightly. “Trying to figure out what your motivates are.”
“Motivates?”
“Yes.” Nick replied brushing the front of his jacket. “There was a time when you despised everything about me, everything I stood for. Now you seek out my attention, for conversation or more.....intimate moments.”
“You use big words Nick, why don’t you just say, for a fuck?”
“Put in that context, one would think you are using them for that purpose.”
“And what would you have me call it Nick...making love? I don’t think so. Truthfully, I’m not using you.” Joe sat on the bed and tied his shoes.
“It did cross my mind.”
Standing up, Joe stared at him a moment. “I’m not using you. Both of us know how hard it is to stomp out the urge to have sex with a male partner. You can’t be that…that…” Joe frowned, looking for the right word.
“Rough.” Nick said.
“Well…yeah…rough. You can’t be that rough with a woman, for fear of hurting her, but there can also be gentleness with a man. Men know more about the male anatomy and all the right places to please each other in sex. Some women do, but some you have to tell them.” Moving toward the door Joe opened it and turned back to Nick. “Does that make sense?”
“I understand what you’re getting at. Some how I don’t think Rick will understand your motives.”
“I think he will, after I point out the same thing to him that I did for you. Don’t forget how many times or men he took to his bed.”
“I haven’t forgotten…” Nick started. “…you and me together, that’s different. He may have let it slide for now, but what about later?”
“He’ll get over it. We should get back to the party and stop acting so strange, you’re starting to worry me.”
“Strange, in what way?”
“Strange, you know…insecure…so not your style.”
”Me insecure?” Nick snapped.
”Sure, why not. Your questioning my motivates for coming to you and I gave you the reason I’ve done that. Would you prefer I seek that attention elsewhere until Sav is better?”
“No.” Nick shot back.
“You’re worrying about what Sav will do or think, because I sought you out for sex, instead of some stranger.”
”And your not?” Nick replied quickly.
“No.” a slight smile crossed Joe’s face. “I like you better as the arrogant sonofabitch you are. Not this groveling at my feet, seemingly lost Nick.”
“Nick de Brabant does not grovel at any ones feet.”
”Yes you do. I’ve seen you do it at Sav’s feet…a lot and more recently mine. It’s funny to watch you do it with Sav.”
Nick angrily waved his hand in the air, putting an end to Joe’s rambling.
“Just where is this going between us?” Nick asked.
“This what?” Joe gave him a look of puzzlement. “Oh, you mean this...as in us, meeting up or wondering off for a good fuck…absolutely no where. You’re just a diversion for wasting time.”
Nick narrowed his eyes. “That was cruel Joseph.”
Stepping closer, Joe quickly kissed him. “I know, but you love it don’t you?” he whispered close to his lips.
Nick laced his fingers around Joe’s neck, lightly squeezing. “I could snap your neck in an instant.” he hissed.
“I know that too, but you won’t.” Joe leaned forward, kissing him again. “We better get back, before we’re missed.” he told him, taking a step back. Nick fingers slipped from around his neck.
Light conversation passed between them as they made their way down the passage ways to the Gathering Room. Joe was laughing at something Nick had said when he rounded the corner, his laughter died in the air.
“Oh, looks like it broke up already, kind of earlier for that.” Joe commented glancing around the empty room.
“We were gone for nearly three hours.” Nick said from behind him.
“It wasn’t that long.” Joe half turned to see him nodding his head. “Great, now what do we do?”
“A stroll in the cool night breeze would be a welcome change.”
“Yeah that does sound nice.” Joe glanced to where the passage led to Sav’s room, debating weather or not to check on him first. “He’s fine, Mal is with him.” Joe said more to himself than to Nick, although his mind couldn’t feel Sav at the moment.
“Well are you accompanying me or going to see him?”
“Hu..oh, no….he…he’s asleep, I’m sure.” Joe stammered, and followed Nick as he led the way out of the carven.

Joe came to the conclusion while walking with Nick in the jungles surrounding the carven, what Malvin told him, that Sav would die if he left him forever…would come to pass.
That reality struck him hard, sending Joe to his knees on the cool damp ground. He sat there for hours in a daze, trying to imagine life without him and he couldn’t. Joe mumbled to Nick, life wouldn’t be worth living without Sav to share it with him. No one could ever take his place, not even Nick, he would not look for someone to fill in that empty space that Sav would leave. Although Evelyn and Phil, all the family and friends he had, it still wouldn't fill that hole. With new determination to see to Sav’s recovery, Nick hauled Joe to his feet and they headed back to the carven. Ducking back through the entrance as the sun climbed higher in the morning sky. Joe felt calmer about the days ahead and looked forward to helping in Sav’s complete recovery. The doubts he had a few days ago about leaving him, forever, all but vanished. He would never think about that again, no matter how tough it got between them. ‘I’ll stay by his side until the end of time.’ Joe thought to himself, walking down to Sav’s room. With a new sense of urgency to see him, hold him in his arms, tell him everything was going to right between them.
Together they went through the door to his room. Joe noticed Malvin sitting in a chair next to the bed, reading a book. His eyes wondered to Sav, and the large cut on his cheek, down to the large bandage wrapped around the lower part of his arm.
“What the hell happened to him?” Joe’s long strides brought him beside the bed, getting a closer look at Sav, before he spun on Mal.
“He passed out and fell out of the chair.”
”How could he have fallen out Malvin? He was all the way in that chair.”
“Jack asked him to jam with them, he moved to the edge of the chair, played for awhile. He saw you leave with Nick, he was a little upset about that.” Mal marked his place and closed the book. “You missed the song he wrote for you by the way.”
“How did he fall out of the chair?” Joe asked again, announce touching his voice as Mal danced around the question the first time.
“He passed out.”
“Passed out!”
“Why do you repeat everything I say Joe? Yes, he passed out.” Mal held up his hand when Joe started to say something. “Before you even ask, I’ll tell you why. From the day you said ‘I’m not sure’, everything has been thrown off, his rest, feedings, even the medicine that is helping him slowly get better. He’s worried himself backwards from where he was before you came.”
“But I thou…”
Mal once again held up his hand, stopping Joe from saying anything. “He’s not to sick to know what you and Nick did tonight. All of this is on his mind, working him up to a point of exhaustion, which caused him to pass out. Breaking his arm and the cut on his cheek when he hit the floor, two things that will be very slow in healing, the broken arm alone will be painful, therefore setting us back even further.”
“I…I didn’t know, he never said anything to me about being tired and I didn’t see it either, he looks the same as….”
“Maybe you didn’t want to see it, thinking everything was going to get better real fast. Well it hasn’t Joe. You of all people know how he carries guilt around, it’s like a constant companion on his shoulders.”
”Guilt, what does that have to do with this?”
“Everything, guilt for the past, what he has done to you, to Amber, his family, guilt for pushing you away into the arms of another and in the end, to Nick.”
Joe eased down on the bed, weighing what Malvin was telling him. “I know what your saying Mal, he does do that, but how do I convince him it wasn’t his fault that I took those Rubies or went to Nick, or that the guilt he carries around is meaningless.”
“You can’t.” Nick finally spoke up. “No more than you can ease my guilt or convince me that it wasn’t my fault in the way I treated him over the years, when he clearly didn’t deserve it.”
“If Sav were awake he would pass out hearing you admit that.” Mal pointedly said to him.
Joe suddenly stood and paced the floor. “I’ll start, right now…I’ll do better…stop thinking about my needs and concentrate solely on him, for however long it takes.” Joe stopped at the foot of the bed, watching Sav sleep. “Whe…where do we go from here, just tell me what I have to do?”
“You have to leave.” Gabriel said from the doorway.
Joe snapped his head up. “Excuse me.”
“I though it a good idea to bring you here, after Rachel and Malvin spoke to me, but I see now that it was a mistake. We though it would help Rick move along faster in his recovery and we were wrong.”
“Joe, I’m sorry…” Mal started, getting his attention. “…but everyone wants you to leave.”
“Leave, you want me to leave?” Joe glanced back and forth between them. “This is bullshit Malvin. You bring me here to help him and that’s exactly what I’m going to do. Both of you can kiss my ass, ‘cause I’m not leaving.”
“87% of the Community that live here has voted you out Joe, you don’t have a choice.”
“Well fuck you Gabriel…!” Joe shouted. “…and the Community, I…”
Nick moved quickly cutting off his angry outburst. “Getting angry is not helping Joe, calm down and talk rati…”
“The hell with your calm down Nick!” Joe shoved him away and headed straight for Gabriel. “I am not leaving here, not unless Rick tells me. Not you or any one else can tell me otherwise.”
“Then we’ll throw you out.” Gabriel said calmly.
“I’d like to see you try.”
Mal yanked Joe back and pushing him to the far side of the room. “Damnit Joe, don’t make this any harder than it already is. Do as they ask you, leave. No more shouted words or anger. You do that, you might get to come back in a few months to visit, if not…you may not see Rick for a long time.”
“Why are you doing this Malvin? You can’t ask me to leave, this was just a little set back, he’ll get be….”
”A set back that could cost him his life.” Mal cut him off.
“You told me if I left that he would die too and now you’re asking me too.”
“Do it for him, Joe.” Mal felt the anger drain off of Joe.
“I…don’t let them throw me out Malvin…please. I…I’ll do an…anything, just don’t…I can’t leave him again, not now, not when he needs me the most. I promise not to leave his side…please.” Joe fought back the tears that threatened to spill.
“I’ll give you a day with Rick when he wakes up.” Gabriel started. “Then you tell him you have to leave to take care of some immediate family matters at home.”
“You want me to lie to him? He’ll know I’m lying Gabriel.”
“You have one day to convince him that your not.”
“But…”
”One day Joseph.” Gabriel cut him and left the room.
“Malvin…” Joe turned back to him, pleading with his eyes.
“I’ll try talk to them Joe, but I’m not making any promises.”
“I don’t care what it takes Mal. I’ll give them everything I own an…and Nick will too, they have to let me stay.”
“They don’t need our possession Joe.”
”Shut up Nick.” Joe snapped.
“No promises.”
“Ok….go, hurry up, your better at negotiations than I ever was.”
Malvin gave him a weary smile and hurried out of the room.
Joe glanced at Nick before he crawled on the bed and lay beside Sav, caressing his face softly. “I wont leave you.” He whispered.
