When Night Falls(Pt32)
Phil glanced worriedly at Sav, then back to Joe. Doubt that Sav wasn't going to make it slowly crept into his mind. If that happened, then Joe would surely follow him…Phil shook those thoughts away. He wouldn’t think about that. Pushing himself up, he headed for the tunnel. He made it back to where they had swam under the rocks, from there the tunnel was blocked with no way around. He understood now of what caused all the rocks to fall. Armand had set a small timed explosive device, likely set off when the weight of the ropes was removed.
“Shit.” Phil hissed throwing a rock at the large pile in front of him. He thoroughly checked around the small cavern, looking for another way out and found nothing. “We need help…and soon.” Opening his mind wide, Phil reached out to Gail and Rick, urgent pleas for them to hurry.
~~~
‘We may not know the future, but we can show you what happened in the past….all reasons that you shouldn’t stay here, to be a lost soul. The ultimate decision is yours to make.’
“But I though you…couldn’t help me…any…” Sav’s voice trailed off as he watched the many different images and voice’s flash all around him. It all seemed eerily familiar to him. He had seen all of this before, when he came across. He saw his childhood as he grew up in Sheffield…teenage years in high school…starting the band…meeting Joe...the feelings he buried deep…Phil joining the band, forming a bond with Steve…the endless sea of unfamiliar faces…the heavy sadness when Steve died...the new surge to carry on with their lives...Vivian joining the band…his own decent into the darkness…another life…the years with Nick...feelings for Joe reborn to grow into undying love…
Sav unconsciously reached for the ring on his finger, he looked down when he didn’t feel it. Laughter of small children drew his eyes back up to follow more images around him. Amber and Thomas as children, laughing, playing…Rebecca leaning against Joe in the grass watching them…Nick off to the side, flying a kite…he stood behind him, trying to make it fall from the dark starry sky. Sav smiled from the memoirs of that night.
Kyle merged into the images before him…a son he never knew about…Beth, his wife and their grown children…a new reason for living. A 100 years of his life whirled around him, as if caught in a tornado and he was standing in the middle, taking it all in.
Sav shuffled his feet in a slow circle within the mayhem of images until he couldn’t take it anymore.
“Stop!” His scream echoed around him.
Everything around him faded away, all but one that continued to play out in front of him. The French Rivera, 2035 the night everyone was enjoying themselves on the beach. The same night that Sav gave Joe his ring. All too soon, it faded into the mist. Another scene, in another time, another place.
~~~
Going over to where Joe sat, he eased himself down beside them again, leaning back against the stone wall. “It’s blocked. Armand must have set a bomb or something. I didn’t find another way out. We’re trapped in here.”
“Entombed is a better word.” Joe whispered.
“Why would you say that?”
“I don’t…I’m so tired…tired of all this. It doesn’t matter what I or anyone does...he’s not coming back.” Joe slid sideways getting ready to lie down.
“No you don’t.” Not caring if it hurt or not, Phil grabbed his hurt shoulder to pull him back up. “You’re not giving up, I won’t let you. Stop thinking that Sav isn’t coming back, that’s foolish. You told me you just know that he isn’t dead. Call out to Nick, get him here Joe. I’ve already done so with Gail and Rick.”
“How are they going to help us? We’re trapped in here, no way out, no way in.”
“They can fuckin’ dig us out!” Phil spat. “It may take a little while for them to do that, but until then, you are not giving up. Not on him and not on us. I won’t let you.” With that, Phil rose to his feet and headed back to the tunnel.
“Where are you going?” Joe called out.
“To start digging. You sit there, let your shoulder heal and take care of Sav. Do what you can to get him to feed Joe.”
His voice faded away in the tunnel, several minutes later Joe heard rock hitting rock as Phil began the long horrendous task of trying to dig them out.
Joe pulled Sav closer to him and reached out to find Nick, he was met with slight resistance at first, then Nick came through to him loud and clear.
~~~
Kyle was dangling above the floor, struggling against the hand that tightened around his throat, getting weaker as the seconds ticked by. Amber rushed forward, fangs bared and eyes a deep red, slamming into Armand, sending them both across the room. Sav watched in helpless horror as Kyle crumpled to the floor, still grabbing at his throat, blood flowed through his fingers with every heartbeat.
“No.” The hushed whisper rushed from his lungs.
The picture shifted to the fight between Amber and Armand. Anger and hatred for what he stood for drove Amber into a frenzy of slashing fingernails and sharp fangs. Two more figures joined her in the fight to kill him. He was no match for Tiny and Scott as they managed to tackle him to the floor, holding him down as Amber hissed in his face that ‘this is for my brother’ and proceeded to rip his throat wide open, then his chest to go after his dead heart. Amber shakily rose from the floor with Scott’s help, emotional and physically drained from the past several months...the image began to fade again.
“Wait…Kyle, what happ….” Sav spun around to come face to face with yet another.
‘You cannot help him.’
“Where is he?” Sav repeated turning to Rebecca.
‘We are not sure where he is.’
“Where?” Sav almost yelled, realization crossed his face. “The crossroads…I have to get there. How do I get there?”
‘You have to be dead.’
”But I am.”
‘You wouldn’t be in this place if you were.’ Rebecca softly caressed his face. ‘I can tell you this Richard. What you saw happened in the past.’
“H..how long have I been here? What happened to Kyle?”
‘Time has no meaning here.’
“He chose to cross over didn’t he? But who brought him acr…”
Rebecca placed her hands on either side of his face, held his eyes with a loving gaze. ‘Steve may have met him at the crossroads, we are not sure, but I can sense his mother and the father that raised him. There are so many places in our world he could be.’
“Tell me where he is?” Sav whispered as eyes eyes focused on yet another scene playing out in front of him.
Releasing him, Rebecca felt the pull of time, feeling her energy to be here slowing draining her. ‘We can not.’
~~~
Joe briefly felt a change in Nick, back in the dark recess of his mind, but didn’t give it a second thought as to what it was.
“They’re coming Rick…hold on.” He whispered laying his head against the softness of Sav’s hair.
~~~
Sav watched the images flash before him, felt Rebecca squeeze his hand tightly as his friends and family milled about on the grassy, rock strewn hill. Heavy equipment hummed across the shadowed land. The place looked familiar to Sav. It slowly dawned on him where it was.
The picture speed up, sun setting, moon rising many times, people and voices came and went, the heavy machinery whined away. It all came to abrupt stop. Silence settled over the hill, people milled around looking down into the dark abyss. Phil stumbled from the hole in the ground, falling into Gail’s arms…taking the offered bottle of blood from Lily. Nick came out next, carrying him, a grim look on his face as he gently laid Sav on the ground, his whispered words of ‘come back to us’ reaching his ears. Amber led Joe from the cave, his pale face drawn and worried as he slumped to the ground beside him. Nick reached up to softly caress his face, telling him to take the necessary blood from him to help regain his strength….fades again…Nick and Joe arguing until Joe punched him in the face, leaving Nick with a bloody lip…
Sav turned his head slightly from the brighter image, when he looked back, he saw himself lying in bed. Memories of when he was sick assaulted his mind, he felt as though he were living that time all over again, but from this side.
“The longer I stay here, the longer it will take me to…heal…f..from that.”
‘Yes.’ Rebecca laced her fingers through his and gently pulled him forward.
“Months of painful recovery to able enjoy life again with my...” Sav tore his gaze from the bed to see the others in the room, two looked to be one figure, but he knew it wasn’t and knew who and what they were doing.
‘If you stay here Richard, your body would eventually give up the will to fight. You will waste away to nothing.’
“To find out about Kyle...and drive Joe into the arms of another...”
~~~
…both of them wrapped around each other in a blood kiss, Joe shoved Nick across the room, turning he stared at Sav’s lifeless form lying in the bed, a brief glance at Amber. Joe brushed the tears from his face and left the room. Amber smoothed the sheet around him as he lay motionless, then turned to Nick as he stared at the ceiling. She pulled him into her arms.
“He didn’t mean it that way. You know Daddy speaks before he thinks.”
“I know.” Nick titled his head down to rest on Amber’s shoulder.
Crystal came in a few minutes later, a book tucked under her arm. “I’ll sit with him now, if you want to take a break Nick, maybe get some rest. You have been pushing yourself to hard lately.”
Nick released Amber, giving her a small smile, then stepped away from her. He watched Crystal pull her legs under herself to get comfortable in the chair.
“What are you reading?” Nick asked her seeing the book in her lap.
“Hum…volume #37 of Joe’s journals. He said I could read them any time. 36 was missing, so I have to skip it.”
“Good.” Nick snorted, tossing a knowing look to Amber. “Volume 36 is inappropriate for one so young.”
“I’m 17.” Crystal shot back.
“All the more reason not to read it.” Nick kissed her gently on the nose and left the room.
“Gee, what is it filled with…Joe and Sav’s sex-capade?”
Amber giggled behind her hand. “Yes. Daddy hides it so we can’t read it.”
“You’ve read it?” Crystal grew wide eyed.
“One page.” Amber held up her finger. “That was enough. I don’t need to read what they do. I already know.”
“Maybe I will ask Joe if I can read it.”
“Good luck.” Amber kissed her cheek. “I’ll be just do…”
”…down the hall in a light sleep.” Crystal finished for her. “I know.”
“Good night.”
“Night.” Crystal called after her. Opening the book to the first page, Crystal watched Sav a moment. “Joe is becoming a grumpy old bear, because you won’t wake up. You need to so I can get to know you better, we haven’t gotten the chance to do that yet. I know you by what everyone has said or read in these journals.”
~~~
“What of the vampire within me?”
‘Only prolongs dying. That side of you grows weaker everyday.’
“But they are feeding me.”
‘This part of you isn’t there.’ Rebecca trailed her hand down his chest.
“I don’t understand.”
‘It could take a year or more for your body to die. Leaving you trapped between our two worlds until that happens.’
“That’s not what Steve told me. I can make a choice here too.”
~~~
Joe quietly slide the glass doors open, he glanced up at the approaching sunrise as he stepped down into the backyard. He went to a place in the yard that he knew where he would feel closer to Sav. The gently slopping hill held so many memories for them, they would sit there for hours staring over the land and house or lay back in the grass to watch the stars make their nightly journey to the far side of the earth.
~~~
‘Then you should make it soon.’
Sav spun around upon hearing Thomas’ voice. He stared at him a moment before his eyes darted to the image beside him. Joe was sitting on the small hill beside their home, gently rocking as he hugged his knees. The shadows of night getting smaller as the sun rose higher behind him.
‘As much as we love and miss him, Mom and I don’t want him here Uncle Sav.’
“Thomas.” Tears sprang to his eyes. “I’m sorry that I didn’t….”
‘It was to late for me, you couldn’t save me, no one could. I understand that now.’ Thomas stepped closer to him. ‘You have to find peace within yourself, move forward, leave my death in the past.’ Reaching up, he brushed the tears that freely fell down Sav’s cheeks. ‘You have to go back, help Dad over come his deep grief, only you can help him.’
Sav tore his eyes from them, to see Joe still sitting on the grassy hill. “This is in the past. He could already be…”
‘No, this is the present.’ Rebecca started, staring at Joe. ‘It’s happening right now.’
“Joe has too much to live for to die.” Sav whispered.
‘Does he?’ Thomas nearly yelled, startling Sav.
“He has Amber, all his grandchildren, everybody…”
Rebecca turned her loving gaze back to him, ‘He doesn’t have you there with him Rick.’
Sav darted his eyes to Rebecca then back to Joe.
‘Go home Uncle Sav, tell dad that we have won and that we love him very much and this…’ Thomas closed the short space between them and placed a long lingering kiss on his lips. ‘…give that to him from both of us.’
Sav touched his lips where Thomas had kissed him, then looked back at Joe. Even in this place, it pained him to see him going through the hurt of what drove him to be on that hill. If Joe died, Thomas, Tracy and all the others, Armand would win his sick game.
“I promised Joe that I would never leave him again.” Sav whispered, still lightly tracing his fingers over his lips. “If I go back now, help Joe with his grief, get on with our lives together, we would win this sick and twisted plan of Armand’s to kill all of us.” Sav looked to them again, taking a small step forward. “I can feel him now, uncertainty, betrayal, strength...love...we can, we have over come so much in our life...even death...we always find our way back to each other…” Another small step forward, Sav stopped and looked at them again, a small smile touching his lips. “I’ll give him more than just a kiss.”
Thomas rolled his eyes, making a face at what Sav implied. ‘At least I can be else where on this side when you do. Bye Uncle Sav.’
“Oh, it’s never goodbye Tommy.” Sav’s smiled widen. “I know you’ll be around.” He locked eyes briefly with Rebecca, then turned to the fading image, gathering himself for the pain he knew to come, felt the strength from the ones he was leaving behind and stepped through the misty image.
~~~
Eyebrows jutted together from the aches and sharp jabs of hunger in his stomach. Sav concentrated on moving his tongue, swiping it across his dry lips, swallowing past the lump in his throat to take a deeper breath.
“humm...Joe.” His horse voice called out.
Crystal sat in the same chair as before, reading a book that she borrowed from Nick. The quiet in the room was broken by Sav’s whispered voice, startling Crystal from her reading. Tossing the book to the floor, she jumped from her chair and leaned over him.
“Joe.” He called out again as his eyes fluttered open.
“Oh shit…” Crystal gasped. “You’re awake.”
Trying to turn his head toward the window, he could only groan against the pain it caused.
“I..I’ll find him.” She raced from the room yelling for him.
