Winds of Destiny(Pt31)
Small groups of family members milled about the clearing on the island, talking and laughter among them. One small group of men were huddled together, quietly arguing between them, heads would occasionally pop up to glance around, making sure no one came closer to find out what they were doing.
“I have only one arm, so I can’t do it.”
Phil stared at him. “Since when did that stop you?”
“It’s my defense for getting out of it. You do it, it was your idea.”
“Oh no, I don’t want them pissed off at me.”
“And we do?” Kyle countered.
“They wouldn’t do anything to you Kyle.” Rick giggled.
“All the more reasons for you do it.” Phil said.
“Ah no…that’s alright Phil, I’ll pass and just watch.”
“Live dangerously for once.” Phil whined.
“I did live dangerously, every time I stepped into the courtroom.”
“You’re scared.” Phil shot back.
“Speak for yourself.” Kyle scoffed.
“Let Ethan do it, he’s an Elder, they don’t dare beat up an Elder.”
“Not a wise proposition, Rick.” Ethan rocked back on his heels.
“So you won’t do it either?”
Ethan grinned and shook his head.
“OK. What about you Tiny?” Alex pointed at him.
“What…me? Oh no..no…no…not me, I don’t have a problem with them.”
“You wouldn’t!” Phil exclaimed a little too loud.
“Keep it down.” Kyle glanced around again.
Phil did the same thing then turned back to Tiny. “Think of it this way, both of them would tackle you to the ground, good chance to let your hands grope.”
Tiny smiled at the thought. “Nice try Philip.”
“Oh good grief…somebody has to do it!” Phil hissed.
“That somebody is you Phil.” Alex pointed at him again.
“Scott.” Phil grabbed him as he tried to pass the group. “Here take this.”
“What for?”
“For them.” Ethan pointed to where Joe and Sav were dancing very close together, putting on a heated exhibition for everyone.
Scott started laughing and handed it back to Phil. “I’m already in trouble with them, doing this would make Amber a widow.”
“What about Nick…” Rick started. “…been a while since he was beat up by them.”
“Naa, he wouldn’t do it.” Phil craned his head looking for Nick, he was talking with Amber and Amanda while closely watching their group.
“If no one wants to do it, then drop it, let them alone.” Ethan glanced at everyone in the group. He started walking away only to stop, turning back to the group. “You seem to have forgotten you’re not human and have extraordinary speed.”
“Oh, I forgot about that.” Kyle said. “But I’m still not going to do it.”
“I want to be able to see their faces.” Rick beamed.
“Fine…” Phil grumbled. “I’ll do it…stand there long enough to see their expression then run like hell.”
“Flying would be better.” Alex chuckled.
Phil stuck his tongue out and spun away. Taking a deep breath he walked toward the two men that were literally making out in front of everyone. Determined not to let the jitters get him before he could finish the crazy mission. Phil stopped several feet from them and hoped they didn’t see him as he gripped the handle tighter, swung his arms back and then quickly fling them forward.
“aahhh…” Sav gasped as the cold water rained down on him.
Joe sucked in his breath and blinked his eyes several time to clear water, then slowly turned his head to glare at who had thrown it on them. “Collen…you are so dead.”
Phil dropped the bucket and held up his hands. “Now Joe…calm down before you do anything rash.”
“Rash.” Joe narrowed his eyes and slowly moved toward Phil.
“Yeah…” Phil backed up. “..rash…like seriously hurt me.”
“I’m going to do more than seriously hurt you Philip.”
‘uh oh.’ Phil cringed inside. ‘He never calls me Philip unless he’s really mad.’ “Well, we had to do something…the way both of you were dancing, kissing…it was getting little heated between you…more than it usually does around us.”
Joe continued to advance on him, Phil continued to back away. “So, you though by dousing us with cold water would cool us off.”
“Well…yeah…” Phil stumbled backward. “..at least to a very…tiny…burning candle flame..from the roaring bon fire it was…you couldn’t even tell it was cold.”
“My memory didn’t fail me on how cold water can be.”
“Did it help?” Phil smiled.
“No.” Joe growled and lunged for him.
The attempt at calming Joe quickly dropped. Phil spun around and took off for the thick under brush and palm trees. He could hear Sav’s raised voice to Joe about not hurting him to bad and laughter from other parts of the group.
Sav shook the water from his hair, then glared at the small group of men standing a short distance away laughing. “Did you have a good laugh boys?”
They immediately shut up and shook their heads, quickly scattering to various other people. Phil yelped from deep within the palms, then started laughing hysterical. Both of them emerged several minutes later, Joe went straight to Sav to scoop him in his arms, kiss him hard.
“I don’t think he’ll do that again.” Joe chuckled.
“Maybe we should get away from each other for awhile.”
“Better do that before I take you back to the boat and ravish you.” Joe dropped his head down to nibble on his neck.
“I like that idea.” Sav moaned softly as he pushed him away. “But we do need to spend time with the family.”
“You're right.” Joe sighted. “I’ll catch up with you later.” Sav brushed passed him and Joe smacked him on the butt. “Don’t run off with Rachel again, leave some for me.”
Sav winked and ambled off to check on Phil.
Joe watched his ass as he walked away, grinning like a cherish cat.
“He can still stir the blood.” Nick commented as he too watched Sav.
“Oh yeah.” Joe growled and dropped his arm over Nick’s shoulder. “Buy me a drink.”
“I’ll buy you anything you want Joseph.”
“Just a drink will do for now.” He laughed and led them to the table set up with food and drinks.
For several hours everyone milled about, either standing in small groups talking or sitting at the few tables set up around the clearing. Enjoying the relaxing atmosphere, the company of each other or the fine buffet, fine blood wine that was provided. Small fires were strategically placed illuminating the area with soft light, while music played in the background for those that wanted to dance.
Ethan excused himself from the small group of young mortals to amble over to Nick, noticing a rare smile upon his face.
“Nicholas.”
“Ethan.”
Both men stood in tense silence as they watched everyone enjoying themsleves. Both of them watched as Joe swept Evelyn up in his arms to gently sway to the music. Nick sipped his blood wine when Sav’s laughter floated on the wind to his ears. The tingle it brought forth within his body upon hearing it. His eyes found him talking with Rachel, the radiant smile that spread across his face when he caught Joe’s gaze.
Glancing at him, Ethan decided to start the conversation, knowing that Nick wouldn’t. “We want to extend our acknowledgment of the troubles you encountered over the past two years. I’m aware that no amount of sincere apology we extend will give you comfort.”
Nick chose to sip his drink, instead of acknowledging what Ethan said.
Drawing in a breath, Ethan continued. “You must understand, The Elders cannot intrude into every quarrel that rares up in the Community, those have to be sorted by the ones that started them.”
Nick turned angered eyes to him. “Quarrel...it was going to be annihilation...Armand would not have stopped until all of them were dead. That does not include the innocent lives he took or going take to try an accomplish that goal. My faith in The Elders is severely shaken in what they are suppose to do...to protect immortals and mortals from rogue vampires.”
“I hold no ill will against you for stating your mind Nicholas.” Ethan regraded him a moment, then looked back out into groups of people.
“I, on the other hand, will hold it against The Elders for a very long time…”
“As you wish.”
“...and their inability to help put a stop to the ‘quarrel’ that plagued my family.”
“What is done, is done, learn from it, leave it in the past.” Ethan spoke softly, sensing that Nick was not willing to carry on with the current conversation, he brought up what else was on his mind. “There have been troubling rumors that are arousing the Community to murmur again. Ones that we managed to vanquish before.” When no response was forth coming from Nick, Ethan continued, “Vampires of Old, pure blood lines.”
Nick stared down into his drink. “This is not the place, nor the time for that discussion. To many prying ears could be listening.”
“Everyone is too engrossed in having a good time to listen what our discussion will be. These rumors are very recent, stemming from Marseilles, a group of three that encountered Rick at a club. Spent time with him doing...well, we know what he does. One of them, Devon was his name, over heard a conversation Sharna Galente had with you in her apartment.”
Nick snapped his eyes toward him. “There was no one else there that night.”
“He was on the balcony, off the kitchen, arrived shortly after she closed the club, heard everything within those walls.”
“I was to focused on getting to Rick and his injury to notice another vampire was there.”
“Understandable. He talked to a few others about it, one of which alerted The Elders. We confronted Devon, who else he told…”
“How did he know?”
“He remembered it from the first rumor-go-round about forty years ago. Unfortunately for him, twice was to many to hear the same rumor. We must protect that blood line.”
Nick sighed. “That we must, no matter the cost.”
Silence stretched between them again. Once again Ethan probed Nick to talk. “As I understand it, you told part of the family.”
“I did.” Nick swallowed the last of his blood wine. “If you would have been there as I requested, you would understand my reasoning for doing so.”
Ethan prompted him again when no explanation was offered. “That reasoning would be?”
“Their bond.” Nick indicated toward the two men that were at that very moment in a deep discussion with Rachel. “Everyone was at a loss of what to do about Joe in those months after Armand took Rick. In the past, Joe would lapse into deep depression whenever he left him. Rick would return when Joe was on the brink and pull him back.”
“You mentioned Anthony and Marissa.”
“I did.” Nick whispered. “I told them of their bond, how it was different from others. The same one Rick and Joe share. The depth of that connection, how it was discovered. I think everyone was satisfied about that explanation. Not all of them understood how that same pure blood line could be carried so far into the future. One that I vowed to protect.”
“As did The Elders.” Ethan added. “We never thought that Armand would go to such lengths to destroy that blood line.”
“He felt threatened by that, from the moment he learned of it. Even more so when they stood in the council chambers all those years ago. It took him this long to plan out their demise. He didn’t take into consideration how strong that bond is between Rick and Joe or the bond within the entire family.”
“Your conclusion is the same as the council determined was the reasoning behind what Armand tried to do.”
“Joe tried to pry more information from me about that blood line before. The again during the cruise, he brought it up. An attempt to cause disdain between Rick and I...he failed.”
“There maybe a time in the near future, they must be informed of what they possess between them.”
“I’m aware of that.” Nick glanced at him, then pointed to his empty glass. “I’m in need of a refill.”
Ethan smiled. “When the time comes, contact me. We can discuss the best plan of action going forward. When that is in place, we can request a meeting with them and the council. It may take more then words to convince some of them of the truth.”
“I’ll be in touch.” Nick replied and ambled off to the tables.
Mal stood quietly to one side of the clearing, watching Nick walk away from Ethan. He noticed they were talking in hushed tones so their voices wouldn’t travel. It looked to him to a be a serious topic, something he would ask Ethan about at a later date.
He looked toward the tree tops, sensing the suns approach in a few hours, time was getting short. All too soon the night would quickly fade for those that would have to seek shelter for the day, therefore ending their family time together. But the night still held one more surprise for those gathered around.
Malvin smiled to himself thinking of what was to come. ‘Yes…surprise for some, relief to others...maybe some tears.’
