Chapter 33
The Friday after Thanksgiving
*****************
James watched David unlock the front door and step inside. He followed hesitantly.
“Bo? Jon?” a female voice - presumably David’s mother - called out from a room at the back of the house. “Did you forget something…”
An attractive woman in her late fifties appeared in the doorway of what James supposed to be the kitchen, or perhaps a hallway leading to the kitchen. Over her blue jeans and pale pink t-shirt she wore a floral apron. She was clutching a tea towel in one hand. She smiled when she spotted David and her whole face lit up. James was in no doubt where David had inherited his smile from.
“David!” she exclaimed excitedly as she realised her mistake.
“Mom,” David said, returning her smile.
She peered around David to where James stood.
“And, if I’m not mistaken, this is James,” she added, hurrying toward him.
“I found James at the airport,” David explained. “He was arriving just as I was about to leave.”
“Please to meet you, Ma’am,” James said, unsure whether to offer his hand or to give her a hug. David had done neither but then he supposed they’d not long said their goodbyes.
“These are for you,” James added, thrusting a bouquet into her outstretched arms. David had assured him she would like them. James just hoped she liked the colour. There hadn’t been much choice at the gas station. He was annoyed with himself for not thinking of getting her a present before they left the airport but he was so pleased to see David all other thoughts had slipped from his mind completely.
“Oh, what beautiful roses!” she said. “Thank you, James. That was really thoughtful of you…and my favourite colour too…”
James relaxed slightly. He was glad he’d gone with the pink this time.
“Don’t look at me, Mom. James chose them himself,” David said.
“Well, you have excellent taste then, James… David, would you put them in water for me…”
She handed the flowers to David.
James tensed, wondering what she wanted to say to him that she couldn’t say in front of David.
“… but, of course, I knew that already. You’re with my son, after all…”
David chuckled and disappeared through the doorway she had emerged from earlier.
“James, I’m so glad you could make it but I’m afraid you’ve just missed David’s sister, Bo, and her husband. They’ve taken the children out for the day. They’ll be back this evening though… and we’re expecting Beth, David’s other sister, to join us all for dinner. David’s father is in the back yard chopping wood for the fire - at least that’s where he was when I was clearing away the breakfast things just now… We’ll go look for him in a minute. I know he’ll be really pleased you’ve come…”
She stepped closer to him and lowered her voice slightly.
“James, I want you to know that you’re a very welcome guest in our home… and I want you to think of it as your home too from now on…”
James was flabbergasted.
“I… er…”
He didn’t know what to say. She seemed genuinely pleased to see him, to actually want him to spend time in her home. With his own mother, the annual visit had always been more of a ritual for all concerned, something to be endured, not something to look forward to. She was smiling at him. He smiled back, nervously.
“Thank you,” he said awkwardly, conscious that his words were inadequate to express the warm glow this woman was generating in his heart.
“David has told us so much about you…”
She glanced over her shoulder to check that David was out of earshot.
“… in fact, he’s talked of little else since you two first met,” she added conspiratorially, “but he never mentioned you were so good looking…”
James felt his face start to heat up.
“Come here, Pumpkin…” she said, reaching up to place her hands on his shoulders.
Before he knew what was happening he found himself being pulled into a hug. He relaxed, enjoying the embrace. David was so lucky to have such a sweet mother.
“Welcome to the family…” she added, kissing him on the cheek. It was a proper kiss. He couldn’t remember when his own mother had last kissed him.
“Stealing James from me already, are you, Mom?” David said emerging from the kitchen followed by a man who James guessed could only be David’s father.
“Hello, Son,” David’s father said, extending his hand to James.
James took the hand and shook it firmly.
“Pleased to meet you, Sir,” he said.
“Now, we’ll have none of that,” David’s father admonished. “I’m Dave and this is Patti,” he continued, indicating David’s mother.
“Or, you can call us Mom and Dad,” Patti added. “We don’t stand on ceremony here. Do we, Darling?”
“No, Mom,” David replied, moving to stand beside James.
James felt David’s arm slip around his waist and he tensed waiting for the looks of disapproval from David’s parents. Instead, they simply glanced from one to the other and smiled.
“We were just about to go out…” Patti began.
“We were?” Dave mumbled, seemingly confused.
“Yes, Sweetheart,” she continued. “You remember…”
A look which James couldn’t fathom passed between them.
“Oh, yes… I remember…” Dave said.
“Why don’t you show James where he can freshen up, Darling,” Patti said, turning to David. “I’m sure he’d like a shower after his flight and maybe a nap.”
She was turning to face James again.
“Did you manage to get any sleep on the flight?”
“Er… not really…” James replied.
“Well, then. You rest up for a few hours. We’ll be back at lunchtime.”
David was grinning at his mother, behind her back.
“Thanks, Mom,” he whispered before kissing her on the cheek. “See you later, Dad.”
With thatid gid grabbed both their bags and started up the stairs.
“Come on, I’ll give you the tour… starting with the upstairs…” he said.
A slightly stunned James nodded goodbye to David’s parents and followed David. Had David’s mother really just suggested they take themselves off to bed or was he imagining things? He concluded he must be dreaming. He was still on the plane somewhere over Kentucky. No one could have a mother that understanding…
