Eden slowly made her way backstage to greet Tara. On her route she smiled awkwardly at several of her old coworkers. They all seemed to recognize her and gave her wide berth, considering they now knew who her sister was. Eden had to admit it felt nice not to have to watch her own back for once, especially now that she sported a broken arm. The bruises on her face were almost healed and covered easily with make up, but there was no way to disguise the cast she had to wear.
It was hard to get Jeff to agree to let her go to the back alone but she was insistent, preferring to meet with and personally apologize to Serpentina before she was subjected to Jeff’s scrutiny. While Eden knew what she’d done to Boa was wrong, she also knew that Jeff would be hard on Serpentina until he was sure she was no longer a threat. And the snakelike fighter deserved some consideration before she endured that. Eden stopped before the closed door of her old dressing room and knocked.
“Tare?”
“Come on in,” the small blonde called cheerily. “I’m just drying off from my shower, so make sure you’re alone.
Eden smiled as she walked in and quickly shut the door. Tara stood in front of the mirror toweling off her lean little body. Eden noticed there wasn’t even an ounce of fat on it and Tara’s muscles, though small because of her size, looked strong and defined. The small currently-redhead tossed the towel aside and pulled on a pair of panties, then a clean black sports bra and a pair of black jeans.
“You really do love all the black, don’t you?”
Tara laughed at Eden’s observation. “When I was traveling in the Series, all my fighting gear was black. It just went well with the silver.”
“I saw,” Eden smiled.
Tara looked up at her quizzically through the mirror. “Something on your mind, sis?”
Eden looked up at her sharply then her cheeks reddened and she shook her head.
“You sure?”
Eden sighed. She still didn’t understand how the woman could read her so well when she hardly knew her.
“It’s just,” Eden started as she looked down. “I wanted to thank you. Not just for today, but for everything.”
Tara held her gaze thoughtfully. “Jeff’s actually the one who started it all,” she finally replied. “Maybe you should be thanking him.”
“I have,” Eden smiled as she blushed. “He just keeps telling me that having me in his life is thanks enough. But I don’t get that. How can he be so thankful for me when I almost cost him his life?”
The small redhead straddled the chair in front of the mirror and put her mirrored sunglasses on, keeping her eyes on Eden the whole time. It was an unnerving yet sympathetic stare.
“I know just what you mean,” Tara said. “When I first met them, that’s when Henry took notice of them. And Jeff was his primary target. But you can’t blame yourself, Eed. Trust me. That boy was looking for you long before you were asked to kill him. You can probably blame me for that, though I won’t apologize now. You needed Jeff more than he needed to be protected from you. And it all worked out in the end.”
Eden was about to speak when the door abruptly opened and a pair of cold steel eyes met hers as she looked over. Her jaw dropped and an icy chill ran down her back as a nauseous feeling gripped her. “S-s-samuel?”
“Yes, Eden.”
Tara jumped up and stood trembling in fury next to her, and Eden sensed Rio immediately take over.
“Rio Angele.”
“Mmm,” she said noncommittally.
“Allow me to introduce myself,” Samuel said smoothly. “I don’t like to be rude. Particularly when I’m about to kill you. My name is Samuel Stone.”
“An apt name,” Rio replied. “Much better than your former one, Mr. Bentley.”
Samuel’s cold eyes suddenly lost their confidence and he dropped his feigned polite mask. “You know me?” he hissed.
Rio nodded and slowly removed her glasses. “And I assume you remember me … Adam.”
Eden watched the exchange in horror, not sure what to think.
Adam looked at the redhead for a long while as he tried to place the woman’s face. She was so familiar. Who the fuck was she?
“Oh, come on, Adam,” Tara said, dropping the accent. “You always remember the one that got away, don’t you?”
Samuel’s features twisted in rage as he suddenly clicked the face into place. “You stole my Ginger Candy!”
“And I also had the nerve to live through it,” Tara laughed. “Oh, how disappointed you must be now. Look at me, Adam! Look at what I became?”
“Rio,” he spat.
“Rio,” she nodded as she stepped forward and pushed Eden further back into the room. “I can only imagine what kind of deal you made with the devil to escape that fire.”
“It wasn’t hard,” he shrugged. “I wasn’t knocked out. Once Thomas took you out of the room, I merely escaped out the window before the fire got really bad. So naïve of you to believe you’d killed me.” He leered at her suggestively. “My but you’ve changed, my dear.”
“I suppose I should thank you,” she said dryly and Adam nodded at her. “But I don’t think I will.”
“Why not?” he taunted. “Without me, there’d be no Rio Angele.”
“Don’t you dare take the credit for creating her!” Alina hissed from behind him, now out of her snake costume and sporting a green bandana over her bald scalp. “Whatever you did to her to cause the rage deserves no mercy!”
Samuel glanced over his shoulder and chuckled. Alina scowled and pushed him into the room, forcing him to his knees. Eden was shocked to see her nemesis helping her and her sister.
“She’d still be that simpering cashier in Chelsea, Massachusetts,” Samuel sneered as he got to his feet and smoothed out the wrinkles in his jacket and leaned against the sidewall. “I MADE her!”
Tara fumed in front of him and Eden could tell she was only barely containing the monster that fueled her in the ring. Samuel had done something horrible to her in the past. Eden knew it. She didn’t know what, but she knew it was devastating.
“You ‘made’ me, too, you BASTARD!” Eden finally shouted. “You took EVERYTHING away from me growing up!”
“More than you know,” he smiled.
Eden’s senses picked up a vibe in the way he’d said that. She knew the man well enough to know he was gloating about something. She looked him directly in the eye, willing her fear to stay down.
“What do you mean by that?”
He put his hands in his jacket pockets and grinned widely. “Your mother looked so much like you do now,” he said softly. “She was so young and sweet.”
Eden felt the rage in her grow as she listened in terror. He’d lied. The son of a bitch had lied to her about her past.
“I met her in the park one fine day,” he went on nostalgically. “Central Park is beautiful in the summer. You were playing in the grass and she was sitting on a bench, watching you.”
Alina and Tara listened to his story as well, and Tara knew what this was probably doing to Eden. The psychopath had murdered her mother, and then lied to her while he raised her. It was a miracle Eden hadn’t been killed before this.
“I didn’t take her right away,” Samuel shrugged looking down at the tip of his shoe and smiling. “I waited for her to trust me first.” He looked up coldly into Eden’s eyes. “She’d never married your father. In fact, she’d never had a chance to tell him about you. She told me he’d died in a surfing accident.”
A tear fell down Eden’s cheek as she stared at him in morbid fascination. His smile widened as he watched her.
“She was easy to kill,” he said with glee. “It didn’t even take much to get her into bed. Once there, well.” He glanced at Tara. “You can probably tell her better than I, since you lived it.”
“You cold bastard,” Tara muttered in contempt.
He shrugged again.
“And then you stole me,” Eden spat out in a rage she’d never felt before. “And renamed me. Then raised me to be a monster!”
“I didn’t rename you,” he replied. “I let you keep the name she gave you. I found it … ironic. But I did fail in trying to train you. In retrospect, I can see why the experiment was doomed from the get-go. You never had it in you.”
Eden wanted to rip her cast off and tear into him when she noticed his hand suddenly come out of his pocket. He was brandishing a small gun and pointing it right at her. The next few seconds seemed like they went in slow motion. She saw Tara grab his hand and wrench it down while Alina lunged for her and then she heard the gun discharge as she hit the floor, Alina landing on top of her.
She looked up and Alina looked back at her blinking furiously. They were both unharmed. They each looked up at the wall behind them at the same time and saw the bullet hole right where Eden’s heart had been only a moment earlier. A series of grunts indicated that Tara was still fighting with Samuel for the gun. They looked over and saw Tara on her back on the floor and Samuel kneeling over her trying to point the gun at her head. Alina jumped up and was about to join the fight when another gunshot rung through the air. Eden’s heart almost stopped. She looked in terror at her sister. Tara’s face and body were covered in blood but she jumped out of the way as Samuel fell over, his eyes opened in an eerie glassy expression. Eden knew he was dead. She looked up again and saw Tara’s eyes locked on someone standing just outside the slightly opened door.
“S-seka?” Tara whispered just before her eyes closed and she began to drop. Alina caught her before she hit the ground.
