“So,” Carrie cleared her throat as she walked to the front of her bus. Jimmy, Jamie, Garrett, Mark, Ed were piled on the couch while Shawn, Jonathan, Chad and Matt were sitting across from them at the dining table. Carrie stood in the hallway as they all turned, looking expectantly at her.
Kelly, unsure of what to do, walked a few steps behind Carrie. The blonde noticed so she reached behind her. “You can be a part of this, you know,” she motioned for her to join them.
“You sure,” Kelly asked avoiding eye contact with anyone but Matt. “I don’t want to intrude.”
“Well, yes. And you are not intruding.”
“Ok.”
“What’s going on, Carrie,” Jimmy asked, his eyes glued to Kelly. He felt like there was something odd about the way they were acting.
The blonde took a deep breath to collect her thoughts. This was it, the moment she’d been thinking about for the past couple of hours. Well, she’d casually pondered it before today, but it was finally here. She exhaled as she began. “Y’all have been with me through most of this ride. And I’m really thankful for all your support.”
“Are we getting fired?” Chad broke in nervously.
Carrie shook her head and raised her hand. “No. There’s just some news that we think is going to start spreading and I wanted to talk to you all before it does.”
“Um,” Jamie spoke, feeling totally clued in. “Is this the Kelly and Matt thing? ‘Cause I mean, it’s really not that big a deal.”
Carrie and Kelly shared a smile, before the blonde continued. “No. Well, I guess, in a way, but no,” she shook her head with a laugh. “What I mean, is…Matt and Kelly aren’t dating.”
“Oh,” Jimmy tried to cover, but smiled slightly. Maybe there was some hope for him after all.
“She’snotdatinghim… causeshe’smygirlfriend,” Carrie rushed as she quickly glanced at Kelly who smiled reassuringly. She turned her attention back to the band and found everyone staring blankly at her.
Garrett’s eyes grew huge. “Huh?”
“Are you kidding,” Ed’s jaw dropped.
“No, I’m not,” Carrie pulled Kelly closer to her. “Ok, here’s the short story. We met, well, not met, we saw each other again. We started hanging out, we just connected and well, here we are.”
Her band members sat there still stunned. They were all looking at each other, all thinking twenty different things, but no one wanting to be the first to speak up. It was definitely the last thing any of them would’ve imagined.
“Why tell us, though,” Chad spoke up.
Kelly smiled nervously as she saw them turn their eyes to her. “Y’all mean a lot to her,” she spoke softly.
“That’s true. And, well,” Carrie ran her fingers through her hair. “Somehow the bloggers found out that Kelly was at the show last night. That’s where the rumor about Kelly and Matt came from. Of course, the rumor was after they made a couple of comments about us hanging out. But since they got pictures of the two of them, they assumed…”
Matt finally stood up and joined Kelly and Carrie. “Guys,” he spoke up for the girls. “I’ve seen them. They’re happy…and I’m going to do what I can to help them.”
“Wouldn’t it have been easier not to tell us,” Jamie frowned. “To keep the secret? Not that any of us would tell, but secrets are better kept the fewer people know.”
Carrie turned to her. “Yes, but, first, I hate lying. And second, I think it would really take a lot of effort to lie all the time, especially around y’all.” Everyone nodded. “ I mean, how many times can excuses be made about why I’m not around or wanting to be by myself on the bus and stuff. I would rather be honest with you and tell you what’s going on.”
“But you’re still gonna be lying,” Jimmy reminded them.
Carrie sighed. “That’s only out of necessity…and only for a while.”
Kelly took Carrie’s hand, as she chimed in. “Look, I hate lying to people, especially my fans. And I don’t want to lie, but let’s not kid ourselves. Carrie and I being a couple isn’t exactly going to be welcomed news to a lot of people. And it’s not that we’re never going to tell the world, I’m sure we will. We just think this is the best answer for the time being. It’s really a very short term solution.”
Carrie nodded in agreement. “To answer the unspoken question, yes, we’re together and we love each other.” She noticed the surprised looks as she verbalized what loomed in the air. “But we still need to share the news with some members of our family. We’d like to do that before making a public announcement.”
“Oh, wow,” Mark spoke up. “They don’t know?”
Carrie shifted nervously. “I’d really rather not talk about it, but yeah. Some do, but not all.”
“Good luck to you,” Jamie offered, supportingly. “I’m sure that’s gotta be a fun conversation.”
Kelly and Carrie shared a nervous laugh. “Oh, you have no idea,” Kelly deadpanned.
“Ok, C,” Ed smiled. “What do you need us to do?”
“Yeah,” Garrett nodded in agreement.
Carrie seemed to relax. “Well, nothing, really. I mean, Kelly’s gonna stick around for another day or so before she has to get back to her tour. So, just don’t answer anything about her if you’re asked. I mean, I know that y’all won’t, but just making sure.”
“You got it, babe,” Chad piped up, smiling at both girls.
“I guess no more scary movies after a show for a while, huh,” Jimmy pouted.
Carrie giggled. “Sorry, bud. Only a couple of days, though.”
“Fine,” he shrugged. “It’s just not fair,” he motioned between the girls.
“I’m sorry,” Kelly offered, apologetically. “You’re a fun guy, but well, I’m kinda taken,” she nodded towards Carrie.
Jimmy blushed in response. “You mean…you had an idea? ” He felt pretty embarrassed to be called out in front of everyone.
“Yes,” Kelly nodded, laughing. “I may be with Carrie, but my eyes still work. I’m flattered, though. And I might know a couple of single girls I can hook you up with.”
“See,” Garrett nudge him. “There ya go, dude.”
“Whatever,” Jimmy shoved him off.
Mark stood as he turned to the girls. “Well, I think I speak for all, or most of us, when I say, that we’ll take care of you Carrie.”
The blonde teared up as she noticed her whole band nodding in agreement. “You guys,” she sniffed. “Have no idea how much this means…”
Kelly stood and watched while she held back her desire to wrap her arms protectively around Carrie as Ed came over to give her a quick hug.
“Thanks, Ed,” she smiled through her tears.
“No problem, you,” he smiled. They had been touring together since the beginning. He was one of the few who’d been with her since her first recording sessions back in Nashville while she worked on her first album.
Matt turned into protective mode as he noticed that the girls needed time alone. He figured this conversation had taken quite an emotional toll on Carrie. “Guys, how about we head out? I hear there’s a nice blues club a few miles from here.”
“Yeah,” Garrett perked up. “That sounds like fun. Y’all coming?” he turned to the girls.
Carrie looked to Kelly. She could tell the Texan would rather stay in and be able to spend time alone with her, but also didn’t want be that obvious in front of everyone. “Um,” she hesitated. “I’m kinda beat.”
“Oh,” was the drummer’s crestfallen response.
“Can we take a raincheck,” Kelly smiled hopefully.
He nodded. “Sure.” There really was no way to resist Kelly’s charm. Even when she was turning you down, she had a way of making it feel like it was your idea in the first place.
“So,” Jamie stood. “You boys ready?”
“Yeah!”
“Let’s go, then,” she smiled at the girls before everyone made their way off the bus.
==========
“What are you thinking about,” Kelly asked as she wrapped her arms tighter around Carrie’s waist. She was sitting against the headboard, propped on pillows with Carrie laying on her stomach on top of her, facing her.
The blonde sighed, enjoying the feeling of the Texan’s body beneath her. “I’m just really enjoying this…” She barely lifted Kelly’s shirt to place a brief kiss on her stomach.
Kelly could read her tone, and decided to press gently. “Are you sure?”
“Well,” Carrie tilted her head to look into Kelly’s eyes. She knew the girl below her could read her like a book sometimes. “No. I mean, I’m glad the conversation with the band went well, but what are we going to do?”
“What do you mean?”
“Babe, they know you and I are hanging out. The so-called press is going to be following us like hawks.”
“I know, Care. I thought we agreed that we’ll do what we’re doing and if anything, they can assume about me and Matt. It’s not like I’m gonna confirm that either.”
Carrie sighed as she sat up. “I know. I hate that. I really wish people would let me have something to myself without having to explain it and share it with anyone else. I mean, what do they care if I have someone?”
Kelly smiled in understanding. “Trust me, I feel the same way you do. But it’s part of the fantasy. I think of it as being one of the popular kids at a giant high school. Everyone wants to know you and who you’re dating.”
Carrie frowned, but quickly smiled as Kelly leaned forward and placed a gentle hand on her cheek. The Texan looked deeply into her eyes. “I can’t blame anyone for wanting to know who you were dating,” she whispered. “I’m just really thankful it’s me.”
The blonde sighed. “Me too,” she closed the gap between them. She used her body as leverage, bringing Kelly back down to the pillows as she pressed her body against hers. Kelly moaned as her hands found their spot along Carrie’s waist where she began sliding her hands under the blonde’s shirt.
Carrie moved her hands from Kelly’s hair as she pulled back and began kissing along her neck.
“A-are you sure,” Kelly whispered.
The blonde quickly shifted to look at Kelly. “Yes. Why are you asking?”
“Because I know you have a lot on your mind right now.”
Carrie melted at the look of concern on the Texan’s face. “And that right there,” she smiled softly. “Is exactly why. Yes. I’m sure,” she nodded emphatically.
Kelly chuckled. “Good,” she sighed as she pulled a surprised Carrie to her, pressing her hips down against the blonde’s before sliding her knee against hers.
A moan escaped from Carrie’s lips as she involuntarily rolled her hips, grinding against Kelly’s knee. “Kel,” she hissed.
The Texan had started kissing along her jaw line, down to that spot right below her ear, before settling on her pulse point, knowing full well that drove Carrie crazy.
======
“So you have everything,” Carrie asked from the bed as Kelly zipped up her bag.
“Yes,” she nodded looking around the room once again.
“Kay,” the blonde smiled, tugging on Kelly’s hand and bringing her onto her lap. “I’m gonna miss you.”
“Me too,” Kelly sighed, closing the gap between them.
“What am I gonna do without you,” Carrie brushed her thumb against Kelly’s cheek.
“Be lonely,” Kelly teased gently. “Like me.”
“Aww.”
“But it’s ok, Care. We’ll make up for lost time when I see you, ok?”
“Oh, you better believe it,” she kissed her softly. “Now I guess you better get going,” she giggled as they heard Matt knocking. “Your ride is here.”
“But,” Kelly pouted. “I’m not ready yet,” she stole another kiss before standing up.
Carrie joined her and wrapped her into a hug before whispering, “I love you…and I will see you soon.”
