Chapter 33
Vin was furious, “She lied to me, lied to me, and as if that weren’t enough then she brings me to some restaurant to dump me!” “I thought things were going to be all right, I thought we were back on track…I should have known…I should have known when she disappeared this afternoon that something was wrong.” “I can’t believe she’s doing this, she got up out of bed with me and went straight to him…damn her!” “Damn Her!”
He screamed at the steering wheel as he pulled the car into Raven’s driveway. “Well, that’s all right, she’s wanted all along to pay me back for Michelle, now she’s done it” “For her sake I hope the doctor makes her happy, cause it is definitely over!,” “Damn you Raven, you told me you forgave me…” he said aloud, “You forgave me…you said you forgave me” “No retribution…no payback you said….” As he stormed up the stairs the phone began to ring, Vin ignored it as he pulled his travel bag from the closet and threw it on the bed. As he collected his toiletries from the bathroom he glanced out the window and saw the red pickup pulling into the drive. “Well, at least she had the decency to bring her ass home.”
As Eric pulled into the drive he looked at Raven from the corner of his eye and told her, “You’re not going into that house alone, not with him like that.”
Raven protested saying that Vin would never hurt her, but Eric wouldn’t hear any of it,
“He’s already hurt you Jicarilla, over and over.” “If you think I’m going to let you go into that house alone think again, after what I saw today it ain’t happenin’, understand? “It ain’t happenin!”
“Promise me that you’ll stay out of it,” she said, “Whatever he says, you’ll stay out of it and let me handle it”…”Promise me or you’ll never get past the front door!”
“Okay! Okay! I’ll let you handle it, but if he’s disrespectful with you or he comes at me…all bets are off!”
As they climbed the steps of the porch Raven looked back over her shoulder to see two more pickups coming up the road.
”Oh God,” she moaned…”Your brothers” Eric turned to see Aaron in one truck and Devon and Jarod in the other. The headstrong twins were the first ones on the ground.
“Where is he?” Jarod questioned angrily as he strode towards the porch.
“Get back in the truck,” Eric answered, “Get back in the truck and go home.”
“But Ric?”
“Don’t but Ric me, Go!” “I don’t need any help, you’ll only make things worse if you stay…go on, go home!”
The more levelheaded Aaron looked out his window, “Are you sure?”
“I’m sure bro, go on, go before things get out of hand” “And take these two baby rattlesnakes with you.”
“Personally I think we ought to ‘jack him up’… puttin’ his hands on thanké, Devon sniped under his breath, and Jarod quickly added “Don’t worry ‘bout it…I think Ric’s got that part covered.”
By this time, Raven had entered the house and made her way upstairs to the bedroom. Vin looked up as she entered the room, but did not stop packing.
“What are you doing?” she asked.
“What does it look like I’m doing? It should be apparent to anyone…I’m leaving!”
“What is going on with you?” “One minute everything is fine, and the next you’re biting my head off in front of a restaurant full of people and trying to drag me outside….”
“So, you’re gonna stand there and act like you don’t know right??”
“Don’t know what…what are you talking about?” she yelled.
Vin picked up his bag and headed downstairs with it. Raven was right behind him, and the phone was still ringing incessantly. Eric was standing just inside the front door, leaning against it with his arms folded across his chest. As he saw Vin approaching he stood up in preparation for whatever might come.
Vin eyed Eric up and down, “I see you brought your bodyguard home with you”
Eric moved from the door and was now face to face with Vin.
“Oh no you don’t! Raven yelled, “I won’t have it! Eric back off! And Vin, just stop it! Stop it right now! “Whatever your problem is it doesn’t have anything to do with Eric, and I won’t let you take your frustrations out on him…or me for that matter!” “Now I don’t know what’s got you in such a state, but whatever it is at the moment you’re the only one who knows what’s going on….”
“Doesn’t have anything to do with him? “How can you even stand there and fix your mouth to say that, it has everything to do with him!”
Ric didn't like Vin's tone or the wild way he gestured when he spoke. He moved in even closer, trying to position himself between Vin and Raven..just in case.
“Well suppose you just ‘enlighten’ me bro…,” Eric said as he stepped even closer tossing his brother’s hat on the hall chair as he did. The phone was ringing off the hook and it was starting to drive Raven crazy.
“Don’t either one of you move! “I mean it!” “Eric you promised to let me handle this…”
“Oh, so now I’ve been reduced to something that you “handle,” right?”
“Stop it Vin!” “Just stop it.” “I’m going to get to the bottom of this , God! Just let me stop this damn phone”
“Hello?’
The feeble sounding voice on the other end could barely speak. “Raven?” “Raven it’s me…”
“Chris?" “Honey is that you…I can barely hear you darlin’ speak up.”
“Raven…you have to come…you have to come now.”
She raised her voice now, “Chris, what’s wrong?”
At the mention of Chris’ name and the possibility that something might be wrong the two men in the hallway turned to listen to her conversation and moved slowly towards the phone.
“It’s Craig..” her brother said tearfully, “You need to come now…Raven you need to come now..”
As she listened to her sibling explain Vin and Eric stood watching the color drain from her cheeks…as she turned to face them her knees buckled out from under her. Eric caught her before she hit the floor and Vin grabbed the phone.
“Chris, Chris it’s me Vin, what’s wrong?” he yelled into the phone, Chris tried to explain, but it was difficult for Vin to hear him…over the screaming.
