++++++++++++++
"You read a lot," Kate noted as she lay curled against Kelly's side while the Texan sat up in bed, reading a book.
"I do," Kelly agreed, wrapping one of her arms loosely around the blonde.
"You don't like tv?"
"You can put it on if you'd like; I don't mind."
"No, it's ok," Kate snuggled into her as Kelly's nails ran along her back. "I like this."
"And it's not that I don't like it, I just...we only had like the three basic channels when I was growing up, so the only thing I'd ever watch was football and the Grammys. I'm just used to not watching it all the time."
"You read a lot when you were little?"
"Mmhmm."
"To pass the time since you didn't watch tv?"
"That's part of it, yea."
"And the other part?"
"The same reason why I still read a lot," her hand soothed over Kate's arm.
"And why's that?"
"I thought you were supposed to be able to see right through me," Kelly teased lightly.
Kate looked up at her with the softest of pouts.
Kelly smiled, stroking her cheek, "To escape."
"From?"
"Then? Everything. The hate I carried around for my biological father. The fact that we were poor and only had three channels. The small town I lived in and was afraid I'd be stuck in forever..."
"And now?"
"All the bullshit with the business side of making music...all the craziness that comes with being famous...the fact that there are some moments, extremely rare moments, but there are some where I wish I could go back to that tiny house in that small town with the three channels."
Kate tilted her head down, kissing her palm as Kelly's thumb brushed across her lips.
"In most ways, things were a lot harder then, but in some ways it was easier."
Kate glanced at the black book on the bedside table, "That's always out in your room."
"It is."
"I've never seen you read it."
"It's not generally something you read with other people around. It's hard to think like that. I tend to read it when I have trouble sleeping."
"How does that work?"
"I turn the lamp on dim so it doesn't wake you."
"No, not that," she giggled. "I meant...you're very religious."
"I am?"
"You don't think you are?"
"God is the most important thing in my life, and I have my beliefs about faith and all that goes with it, but religious...I don't know. I'm not a very good Baptist if you go by the normal standards."
"Normal standards?"
"I don't go to church every weekend. I'm lucky if I go three times a year. I'm always working, and if I'm not...me being there takes the focus off the service, and I don't really like that."
"But you go sometimes?"
"My mom makes me whenever I'm at her house on a Sunday."
"She makes you?"
"My mom can be very scary when it comes to God," Kelly laughed softly.
"Have you two always been so close?"
"There were a few rough years when I was little with the divorce and her remarrying, but we got through it. Kinda had to--she was the only family I had."
"So, you may not be religious by some people's standards, but you do consider yourself a Christian, right?"
"Yep," she nodded.
"So how does that work?"
"How does what work?"
Kate placed a hand on Kelly's stomach, her fingers soothing over her skin through her t-shirt.
"Ah..." Kelly placed the book she was still holding on the bedside table. "I'm gay."
"Did you forget?" Kate grinned playfully.
"Kinda hard to forget when I have a gorgeous blonde pressed against me."
Kate buried her face in Kelly's side at the feeling of her cheeks threatening to blush.
Kelly smiled, rubbing her back.
"Is it hard?"
"It was at first."
"Then what happened?"
"I talked to my mom. It took her a while, but she finally got through to me that it was ok. And I mean, she's one of the most conservative, religious people out there, so if she's ok with it, then it couldn't be as bad of a thing as I made it out to be, right?"
"I'm glad you had your mom there for you."
"Yea, she helped me out a lot with that aspect of it...the whole guilt thing. I mean, now, I feel so stupid for ever feeling guilty in the first place. What is there to feel guilty about, you know?"
Kate's eyes raised up to look at her.
"There's nothing to feel guilty about," Kelly said surely.
"My family...we weren't really religious growing up. The only time we went to church was for Christmas and when someone died, but I believe in God, and I believe that you have to live a good life if you want to end up on his side of things after all this, so I just...I'd been wondering..."
"Can I ask you something?"
"Of course."
"Do you think I live a good life?"
"I think you might be the kindest, most giving person I've ever come across, so yes, I think you live a good life."
Kelly chuckled, "Well, I wouldn't go that far, but I do always try to do the right thing, and I try my hardest to love everyone I come across, and sometimes I fail miserably, but I think in the end, the trying is all that matters. Who you choose to share your life with...I don't think God cares about that, all he cares about is that you love the people around you with all your heart just like he loves you."
Kate nodded.
"So, now that I've gone all 7th Heaven on you, let me go back to my sleazy romance novel," Kelly reached over, picking up the book she had been reading. "It was getting to the good part. Michelle was feeling Jack throbbing through his jeans."
Kate laughed loudly, "You're so full of it."
"What? You don't believe me?"
"Why would you read that?"
"I haven't had time to go to the book store since we've been here, so I stole one of Ashley's. She loves these things."
"She's definitely a strange one."
"That she is," Kelly agreed. "You want me to read to you?"
"You want to read me a sleazy romance novel?"
"What? It'd be kinky," she wiggled her eyebrows. "I'll just change Jack's name to Charlotte."
"And what about Charlotte's...extra appendage?"
"I'll just roll with it. I'm good at adlibbing."
"I don't think slipping and saying 'she' instead of 'he' in your songs counts as adlibbing."
"Well aren't you a little smartass," Kelly laughed, poking her side.
Kate giggled, wrapping her arms around the short singer's stomach.
"Or how about instead of reading one of Ashley's crappy novels, we watch a movie?" Kelly offered.
"Not looking forward to going back to L.A. tomorrow?"
"How can you tell?"
"You keep thinking of ways to stay up."
"You're good."
"I know, but hey, we have the picnic tomorrow before we go, don't forget."
"I seriously doubt that is something I would ever forget," Kelly gave her a playful squeeze
Kate smiled as she reached across her and grabbed the remote from the beside table, "Let's see what the hotel has...my treat."
"You realize that whatever movies we buy will end up on the bill that I'm paying, and that I won't let you pay me back, right?"
"Shush, and let me believe what I want."
Kelly smiled, stroking Kate's hair as she flipped through the movies, "Alright, your treat...and to pay back your generosity, I'll even let you choose the movie."
"That's right, cause I'm the boss."
"Oh yea?"
"Well, in bed at least."
Kelly snorted with laughter.
Kate blushed crimson, "Not what I meant."
"Sure it wasn't..." Kelly kissed the top of her head.
"You suck."
"We've had this discussion before."
Kate growled.
"Do you have any idea how hot it is when you do that?"
Kate felt her cheeks turn a deeper shade of red, if that were even possible, as she buried her face back in the Texan's side, biting her playfully.
Kelly giggled, kissing the top of her head once more, as she wrapped both arms around her, hugging her close, "You're so cute."
+++++++++++
Kate giggled as Kelly held onto her hand, leading her down the pathway, loudly singing the song that had been playing in the car when they arrived. "Dork."
"You've known me for how long now, and that's the best you can come up with?" Kelly asked teasingly.
"It's the word that best suits you," she shrugged.
"Whatever," Kelly laughed.
"It's very quiet here."
"I know...nice, right?"
"Very," Kate agreed as Kelly led them away from the path. "You sure you know where we're going?"
"Nope."
"Well, that's reassuring..."
Kelly laughed, squeezing her hand as they made it to a clearing.
"Oh..." her voice came out soft.
"What do you think?" Kelly studied her face, trying to gauge her reaction.
"It's beautiful," Kate nodded, following Kelly down the soft hill that led down to a small river.
"Here's good?" Kelly questioned, stopping midway down where the ground started to even out.
"Yea, perfect," Kate smiled as Kelly put down the basket that she was holding, and dropped her hand in order to unfold the blanket.
"Um, in the movies they always have like these red and white checkered blankets when they go on picnics, but I couldn't find one, so..."
"Ninja turtles," Kate nodded, looking down at the blanket.
"Ok, in my defense, we're in Nashville, and all I brought was clothes and bathroom stuff, so I had to hurry up and go to the store this morning, and that's all I could find," she looked up at her sheepishly.
"Well, I guess it's a good thing that I'm a big fan of the ninja turtles then, huh?"
Kelly smiled.
"So a ninja turtle blanket...should I be afraid to even ask what you brought to eat?" Kate motioned to the basket Kelly had set down.
"Oh, um, there's some veggies and fruit and drinks, and I asked Ash what you normally bring on a picnic to eat, and she said sandwiches, so I picked up Subway."
"Perfect."
"Yea?"
Kate nodded, "Yes."
Kelly gave a soft smile before turning to look down at the blanket.
"So, if all that's in your basket, then what's in here?" Kate asked, raising the picnic basket that was in her hand.
"Dessert," Kelly replied simply.
Kate laughed, "Dork."
Kelly's smile grew as Kate wrapped an arm around her, pulling her into a hug, "Honestly...how bad did I screw this up?"
"Honestly...so far this is the best picnic I've ever been on."
"Well, duh...I mean, this is me we're talking about," Kelly pulled back with a grin.
Kate shook her head, laughing softly.
"Wondering what you're gonna do with me?" Kelly's eyes lit up.
"Shush," Kate warned with a smile.
+++++++++++
"I was a lion," Kelly nodded as they sat next to each other on the blanket, their shoulders touching as they leaned back on their hands.
"A lion?"
"Yep. It was Noah's Ark, and I was a lion...that's my first memory of being on stage."
"I bet you were a very good lion," Kate nodded.
Kelly laughed, shaking her head.
"No?"
"It was like one of those full body costumes, you know? And I don't know why they'd let a five year old put on her own costume, but they did, and I got the head piece right, but the body part I put on backwards, so the tail was in front, and I thought that was the funniest thing ever. When I was on stage, I kept turning my hips back and forth making my tail swing...my mom wanted to die."
Kate laughed, "I can imagine."
"And I mean, thinking about it now, the whole tail thing takes on a rather dirty connotation, right? But back then, man, I was just amazed that my tail was in the front, and I thought it was so cool."
"The innocence of youth," Kate giggled. "I bet you were a handful when you were little."
"I was," Kelly agreed. "And I mean, it's not like I was a bad kid or anything. Like I never even drank until my twenty-first birthday."
"You know, from my experience, that isn't a very good idea."
"Oh, it's not, trust me, but that's a story for another time."
Kate laughed softly.
"But yea, I was a good kid, but it just always seemed like I was getting in trouble. I blame my mouth."
"Never shut up?"
"Couldn't do it, plus the whole sarcasm thing...adults just didn't appreciate it as much as I did."
"Adults never appreciate the good things in life," Kate shook her head.
Kelly laughed, bumping their shoulders together.
Kate smiled, "I like it here."
"Yea, it's really pretty."
"No, I mean, yea, but I meant here like Nashville here."
"Oh yea?"
"Yea," she nodded. "It's much better than L.A."
"I agree."
"And you're happier here."
"I am?"
"Yea, a lot happier. I mean, it's not Texas happy, but it's way, way better than L.A. happy," Kate turned to her, watching as she nodded in agreement as she looked out at the river. Her eyes slowly traveled down the Texan's neck as Kelly's head tilted in the opposite direction. She took a deep breath before leaning forward and brushing her lips across the shorter girl's shoulder that was left nearly bare by the simple tank top she was wearing.
Kelly turned to her, her eyes curious.
Kate offered a shy smile.
Kelly mirrored it, her hand slowly inching to the left, moving further behind Kate until it reached the blonde's hand, sliding over it.
Kate's smile grew, her head turning back to the river when a movement caught the corner of her eye, "Aw...baby ducks!"
Kelly turned to find five little yellow ducks all walking in a row behind a mother duck.
"They're so cute."
"Come on," Kelly laughed, jumping up.
"Kelly, no," Kate got up and chased her down the hill. "You're gonna scare them."
"I just wanna see them up close," Kelly pouted as Kate caught up to her and wrapped her arms around her, holding her back. She watched the ducks hurry to hide behind a nearby tree.
"Yea, but you can't be running after them," Kate laughed softly. "They're just little bitty baby ducks. Imagine what it looks like to them when some giant human starts chasing them."
"You would be the giant human. I'm a normal sized human"
"To them," Kate poked her stomach, making her giggle. "To them you're a giant human."
"I wanna hold one," Kelly turned back to the tree with a determined look in her eyes.
"Ok, well, you gotta be patient," Kate led her closer to the tree. She knelt down, pulling Kelly down beside her.
Kelly watched Kate hold out a gentle hand as one of the baby ducks peeked out from behind the tree.
"Hey little duckie," Kate smiled, her voice soft. "Come see little guy...come on, it's ok...we're not gonna hurt you..."
Kelly bit her lip as the tiny duck slowly started to waddle towards them.
"See..." Kate lowered her hand as the duck neared. "It's ok...hi, little guy..."
"How do you know it's a guy?" Kelly asked, watching as the duck gazed up at the two of them.
"I don't know...he looks like a little guy, don't you think?"
"Yea," Kelly agreed, following the baby duck's gaze. "Plus he's totally checking out your cleavage."
"And you're not?"
Kelly quickly diverted her eyes back to the baby duck.
Kate laughed, wrapping an arm around her as she sat down. She pulled the singer onto her lap as two more baby ducks walked out from behind the tree.
Kelly smiled as Kate took her hand and held it out to the ducklings.
"They'll probably let you hold them," Kate noted, wrapping an arm around the brunette's stomach.
"You think?"
"Mmhmm," she nodded.
Kelly placed her hand palm up on the ground.
"Patience," Kate reminded in a whisper as one of the ducks slowly made it's way towards her hand. She smiled at the Texan's giggle as he walked across her fingers.
Kelly slowly raised her hand when the duck reached her palm. "He's so little."
"He's adorable," Kate rested her chin on her shoulder.
"We should name him."
"I'm sure his momma already named him."
Kelly pouted.
"Ok, we can name him," she laughed softly. "How about Charlie? He looks like a Charlie."
"Charlie," Kelly nodded. "I like that...and if we're wrong and he's a she, then it'll still work."
Kate giggled, "Very true."
"I have a car named Charlie."
"You have a car named Charlie?"
"Yep."
"You're a strange one, you know that?"
"You learn to deal," Kelly shrugged.
Kate laughed, kissing her shoulder again.
Kelly leaned back against her, "Charlie the duck."
"Charlie the duck," Kate agreed. "Um...Kelly..."
"Yea?"
"Maybe we should put Charlie the duck down..."
"Why?"
"Because Charlie's momma doesn't look too thrilled with us."
"Huh?" Kelly looked up to find the mother duck staring at them rather menacingly. "Oh..."
"Yea, so how about we just put Charlie down very gently..."
Kelly lowered her hand, letting the baby duck walk off of it, back onto the ground.
"And now we just stand up..." Kate took the hand that Kelly offered. "And back away slowly..."
"Slowly?" Kelly swallowed as the mother duck took a step towards them, honking threateningly.
"Run...run very, very fast," Kate nodded, holding her hand tightly as they both turned and ran, the mother duck chasing them up the hill.
"Why are we stopping?" Kelly asked when Kate slid to a halt halfway to the car.
"The picnic stuff."
"Leave it," Kelly shook her head. "It's the ninja turtles. They can fend for themselves."
"Oh shit..." Kate's eyes grew wide, looking over her shoulder.
"What?" Kelly turned. "Holy crap..."
"It can fly?" Kate's voice squeaked as the mother duck rose from the ground, flying towards them.
"It's a duck--duck's fly," Kelly reminded.
"Run faster, run faster," Kate instructed, tugging on her hand as she raced towards the car.

"So how was the date?" Jill asked as she packed her suitcase while Kate sat on Ashley's bed, watching.
"Date?"
"Didn't you and Kelly have a date today?"
"We just went on a picnic."
"So it was a lunch date," Jill nodded.
"It wasn't...did Kelly call it a date?" Kate asked curiously.
"No."
"Then why do you keep saying that?"
"Because it was what it was, and it was a date."
"How?"
"The two of you all alone on a romantic picnic..."
Kate scrunched her nose thoughtfully.
"What?" Jill laughed.
"Do you think Kelly meant it as a date?"
"Would that be a bad thing?"
"Jill, I..." Kate sighed as she looked down at her hands that were folded in her lap.
"You're stuck right now. I know," Jill replied gently as she sat next to her.
"Everything's just so...I just never thought that this...I'm confused as hell," she finally admitted. "And yes, I know how clich that is."
"Yea, but it's the best way to describe it."
Kate nodded.
"You ok?"
"She makes me happy," Kate replied simply.
"Oh yea?" Jill smiled.
"Just everything about her, it just..."
"You know that's ok, right? That you have the right to be happy, and that you have the right to be with someone who makes you happy, no matter who that someone is."
Kate nodded again, resting her head on her best friend's shoulder.
"And you know that I'm here if ever you want to talk, right? Advice from personal experience...it's usually the best kind, you know?"
"Thank you," Kate whispered softly.
"You sure you're ok?"
"Yea, I'm fine," she sniffed.
Jill laughed softly, rubbing her back, "It just all kinda hit you hard, huh?"
"Yea..."
"Well...you've been hiding from it for a while."
"I wasn't hiding."
"You were hiding," Jill nodded.
"Do you think...do you think I have feelings for Kelly?"
"Wow..." Jill breathed. "That's not hiding...that's so far beyond hiding, I don't even know what to call it."
"Jill..." Kate fussed.
"Sorry, I'm sorry," she apologized. "And I think the only person that can answer that question is you."
"What if I'm too scared to answer it?"
"Why would you be scared to answer it?"
"Because then everything's going to change."
"Oh, hey, no, nothing's gonna change," Jill assured. "Trust me, you have no idea how lucky you are right now."
"How?"
"Because Kelly is so beyond amazing. She is way too sweet and cares about you way too much to ever force something on you just because you have feelings for her. You have no idea how insanely patient that girl is, especially when it comes to you. I have no clue how she hasn't spontaneously combusted by now trying to keep herself in check around you. And even if you do want something to happen between you, what's going to change? You already spend all your free time with her. You two act like a couple in pretty much every way possible except one."
"The sleeping together part."
"Well, I was going to say the kissing part..."
Kate chewed on her bottom lip.
"Kelly would never ask you to do something you weren't ready to do."
"If you're with someone...she's gonna want to."
Jill laughed, "I'm pretty sure she wants to already."
"You think so?"
"Kate, that girl is so far gone with you, it's ridiculous. She wants you, trust me, she wants you."
"But she...she's never even tried to kiss me. I mean, we...but she never actually went for it."
"Like I said, she'd never ask you to do something you weren't ready for. There is no reason for you to be nervous about this...not with her."
"What if I'm horrible at it...at all of it. I don't...she's a girl. What am I supposed to do? Do I hold the door open or does she? Do I buy flowers or does she? Do I pay or does she? Do I--"
"Kate," Jill interruped. "It's Kelly, she'd never let you pay whether you two were together or not. She'd never let you pay even if you were her mortal enemy."
"True," Kate laughed softly. "She's really sweet."
"She is."
"And so funny."
"Yea."
"And she has the most amazing eyes."
Jill giggled.
"And she's hot...did you know she doesn't think she's hot?"
"Maybe you should tell her."
"It's not that easy."
"She compliments you all the time."
"Yea, but she never listens when I compliment her."
"Then make her listen."
Kate nodded, sitting up straight as Ashley walked into the hotel room, "Hey."
"Hey," Ashley nodded.
"Where's Kelly?" she asked curiously.
"Taking a short nap before the flight," Ashley replied, closing the door behind her.
"Get 'em girl," Jill nudged her towards the door that joined their two rooms.
"Now?" Kate's eyes grew wide.
"No time like the present," Jill smiled.
"Ok...yea," Kate took a deep breath before opening the door and walking into the room, quietly closing it behind her. She smiled as she noticed Kelly curled up into a tiny ball on top of the comforter. She crawled onto the bed, sliding in right behind her, watching a small smile form on the Texan's face as she wrapped an arm around her stomach. "Hey."
"Hey," Kelly placed her arm over Kate's, pulling her closer.
"I, um...I had a lot of fun today."
"Me too," she nodded. "Thanks for making my first picnic one to remember."
"Yea, well, anytime you want to get attacked by a crazy momma duck, you just let me know."
Kelly giggled, her fingers sliding through Kate's.
"I, uh...I wanted to tell you something."
"Ok," Kelly yawned, her eyes still closed.
"I think you're beautiful," the words escaped her mouth before she even had time to think about them.
"Well, I think you're beautiful too."
"No, Kell," Kate sighed. She turned the shorter girl onto her back.
Kelly's eyes opened slowly, and she smiled up at her. "Yep...just as beautiful as I remember."
"No," Kate mentally cursed herself for blushing. "This is not your turn."
"Ok?" Kelly laughed softly.
"This is my turn to tell you how beautiful I think you are, and you don't get to say it back because when you say it back it means you're not really hearing me, and I want you to hear me, ok?"
"Ok," Kelly nodded, an amused smile on her face.
"Ok," Kate swallowed hard as she tucked a curl behind Kelly's ear. "I think you are insanely beautiful. I think...I think you have the most amazing eyes I have ever seen, and I think you have a smile that when it's a real smile, not one of those you fake for the camera and for others, but when it's real...it could melt even the evilest person's heart. And your cheeks--"
"My cheeks?" Kelly raised an eyebrow.
"I know you hate them because you think they're chubby, but I think they are so adorable, and very much necessary in order to counteract the damage that your eyes can do when you're angry. And I know that right now in your head you already have a list of compliments you want to spout off to me because that's just how you are, but can you please for once keep them to yourself and pretend that you believe me when I say that I think you are so, so beautiful."
Kelly nodded, "Ok."
"Thank you," Kate let out a deep breath.
Kelly smiled, reaching up and stroking her cheek, "Do you want to take a nap with me?"
"Yes, I do, but I need to do something real quick, ok? I'll be right back," Kate promised as she climbed off the bed and hurried into the adjoining room, closing the door behind her.
Jill and Ashley both looked at her in confusion.
"I have feelings for Kelly," Kate admitted in a rush.
"Woo!" Jill and Ashley's hands raised in victory.
"Yea," Kate nodded, finding herself slightly breathless.
"So now what?" Ashley asked excitedly.
"Well, I told her I was gonna take a nap with her, so I'm gonna go do that."
"Well, go," Jill shooed her back out the door. "Don't leave her waiting."
"Yea," Kate smiled. "Thanks guys."
"Enjoy your nap," Ashley waved.
Kate blushed as she walked back into her and Kelly's room. Kelly was curled back up on her side, but this time had managed to make it under the covers. Kate climbed back on the bed, sliding in behind her once more.
"What was all the cheering about?" Kelly asked as Kate wrapped an arm around her, pulling her against her.
"Oh, you know, just Jill and Ashley being weird like normal."
"They are pretty weird," Kelly agreed.
"Yea," Kate laughed softly as she rested her cheek on Kelly's, feeling the shorter girl's body relaxing more and more in her arms as she fell asleep.
