When Night Falls(Pt33)
Crystal ran down the hall to the stairs just as Nick was coming back up, she slammed into his chest.
“Whoa!” Nick was knocked off balance, but caught himself from falling backwards down the stairs. He grabbed Crystal as she stumbled forward, almost falling with him. He sat her back on the floor. “What’s your hurry?”
”I have to get Joe. H..he’s outside.”
“He has been very upset lately. Maybe you should leave him alone.”
“No, you don’t underst…”
”Yes I do Crystal. He will be inside before it gets to dange…”
”Rick…Sav is awake. You can’t feel him!”
Nick just stared at her.
Crystal shoved him out of the way and ran down the stairs and out the back door. Jumping over the three steps to the walkway she ran across the yard, knowing exactly where he would be. “Joe!” She ran up the small hill, her bare feet slipping in the wet grass. Scrambling the rest of the way, Crystal grabbed his arm, pulling and yelling at the same time.
“Joe…get up…come on…get up!”
Raising his tear stained face. Joe became aware of how much the sun had risen since he had sat down.
”Are you trying to cook yourself?”
“No!” Joe shot back as he stood up.
“Sav is asking for you…come on.”
Joe yanked her back into the darker shadow of trees. “What did you say?”
“He’s awake and asking for you.”
Joe’s gaze lifted to his bedroom window, his heart hammered painfully in his chest. Crystal watched his figure blur in motion as he flew toward the house, then ran after him.
Nick looked up as Joe hit the door frame, tripping over his feet as he came into the room. The red angry welts on his arm and face came into sharp focus. Motioning for him to come further in the room, Nick sat the empty bottle of uncut blood on the bedside table and stood up to meet him half way.
“Do you need this?” He asked titling his head slightly to the side.
“No..I…” Joe glanced down at his arm. “..don’t feel it.” He brushed past Nick to approach the bed. Sav’s blue eyes stared back at him.
Easing down on the mattress, Joe wrapped his finger in Sav’s, swiping away the tears that ran down his face and smiled the best he could. “I was so worried about you.”
“You...worry...” Sav returned a weak smile.
“I have a good reason too. I didn’t think you were…”
“Your face…” Sav tried to reach up to touch the healing red marks, but his arm felt like a thousand pound weight.
Joe took his hand and placed a soft kiss on the back. “It’s nothing, I hardly feel a thing.”
“You were outside…the sun...”
“I fell asleep.” Joe squeezed his hand. “I was too lost in my grief to pay attention. How did you know I was outside?”
“Saw you…the sun...”
Joe frowned at his words. ‘How could he have done that? He’s been asleep, cut off from all of us.’
“Kyle...he...”
“You have been asleep a long time, your weak, give yourself time to wa.….” Joe started. He could see the fear dancing in his eyes, but didn’t know the cause.
“Tell me…”
Joe shot a look to Nick, who lightly shook his head.
Feeling his fingers tighten, Joe looked back to him. “He is alright.”
“Armand…” Sav closed his eyes, seeing that image again.”Kyle..blood was…gripping his...neck…” Sav opened his eyes again, to darted back and forth between them. “..where..”
”Maybe you should rest more. We can talk later, when you are stronger.” Nick said.
Sav started rolling his head back and forth, then tried to push himself up. “Need to...”
Joe gently held him down, given his weakened state, it wasn’t to hard. “Sav you’re much too weak to get up, please don’t fight staying in this bed…”
“Stop…”
“Damnit lay still!” Joe shoved him a little harder.
“Joseph.”
“Sorry.” Joe cringed at the warning tone in Nick’s voice. “Stop fighting me and trying to get out of this bed. Your outburst could cause you to sle..”
Sav renewed his struggle to get up. “No...h.he...crossroads..”
“Richard look at me.” Nick finally stepped in, he gently, but firmly held Sav’s chin, forcing his gaze from Joe.“Kyle did cross over, he’s one of us.”
“Rick...Tiny…” Sav managed to remove Nick’s hand, then looked back to Joe.
“No.” Joe said softly glancing at Nick, then smiling softly at. “We can talk about this later.”
“But w.who?”
”I did.” Nick released his chin to gently caress his cheek.
Tears ran down the side of his face as he stared at Nick. “You.”
“He would have died if Nick didn’t act quickly.”
Sav began to slowly shake his head. “Nooo…” He covered his face with his hands, heavy sobs shook his body.
“He saved Kyle’s life Sav.” Joe pulled his hands away.
“Why….him?”
Nick frowned at his reaction in learning that he was the one that brought Kyle across, thinking that Sav would be relieved that he did. Joe looked up at him and just shrugged his shoulders, he didn’t understand the reaction either.
Scooting forward, Joe gathered Sav in his arms, holding him tight against his chest. “Shh…it’s going to be alright, you’ll see. We can talk about everything later. You need to rest now.”
“Take me...” Sav pulled back.
“He’s sleeping…” Nick reluctantly added. “…in my room.”
“Before you get all worked up again.” Joe wiped the wetness from his cheeks. “It was for the best that Nick took over his training. I was in no shape to do it, nor was Phil. But, we can leave all of that for later. For now...” Joe stood up to start removing his clothes. “...you are going to stay in that bed. I know you are still in pain, need more healing. Kyle can come visit with you later.”
Just the small amount of protesting Sav gave them stole the tiny bit of strength he had. He didn’t fight it any longer and drifted back to sleep as Joe settle close beside him.
“Do you need anything?” Nick asked.
“No, we will be fine.”
“Very well.” Nick replied softly. “I’ll replenish uncut for you shortly.”
“Thanks.”

Week later….
Sav slowly opened his eyes to a dimly lit room. Glancing around the shadows told him the sun was going down. Stretching the stiffness from his body, he did notice that he was the only on in bed. Soft scribbling of pen on paper filtered into his ears and he turned over to find the source of that sound. Nick was sitting in the high back winged leather chair, his pale skin a stark contrast against the blood red robe that hung open, showing his chest. Black silk pajama bottom covered his legs that were crossed and bunny slippers adorned his feet. To see Nick sitting there, knowing how he was about his appearance, his regal, 13th century elegance…in bunny slippers always made him smile.
“I trust you slept well.” Nick said scuffling papers.
Sav tucked his hand under his cheek. “Yes I did.” His eyes danced with merriment. “Where in the world did you get those slippers?”
Nick wiggled his foot, making the bunnies ears flop back and forth. “They were a gift from a....eternal boy, one that I love dearly.”
“They were meant as a joke to loosen you up a bit, learn to have some fun and not be an arrogant ass all the time.” Sav pushed himself to a sitting position, leaning against the headboard. “I never expected you to wear them, but still funny to see.”
Nick glanced at him over the paper he was reading, then raised his foot to admire the slipper. “I like them, they’re cute, comfortable and keep my feet warm.”
“Cute...keep your feet warm...eh." Sav mocked him. "You can’t even tell the difference weather your feet are warm or not.”
Nick shrugged nonchalantly. “Maybe so, but I still like them.”
“What are you reading?”
“Builders contract.”
”I thought you already did that for the Foundation Building.”
”I did, well most of it anyway. Beth is over seeing the completion.” Nick flipped the page. “This is for the de Brabant Castle.”
“You’re going to rebuild it?”
“Why wouldn’t I?”
It was Sav’s turn to shrug. “I don’t know…money. I know it cost several million dollars the first time.”
“59.2 million to be exact. My possessions inside that I have collected over hundreds of years, were worth much more than that.” Nick dropped the papers on the table, going over to the bed he sat down. “Why should I rebuild? It’s in memory of Thomas and Tracy. I'm going to add a rememberance hall for those we lost. It’s the final piece of the puzzle to pay tribute to them.”
“It shouldn’t be called de Brabant Castle, if it’s in memory of them.”
“What should we call it?” Nick took his hand, a warm inviting smile touched his lips.
“I have no idea.” Sav pulled his hand away, then looked down as he began to twist his fingers together.
In the weeks since Sav woke up, he had been putting distance between them and their relationship. Nick didn’t let his feelings be known to anyone about the situation. He knew that it had something to do with Kyle, but waited for Sav to bring it up when he was ready. Until then, Nick would do anything that Sav asked him.
Breaking the long silence, Nick reached for the bottle on the bedside table. “Are you hungry?”
“Um…no, Joe made sure that I had plenty before he left with Kyle.”
“Ah yes, his next mortal lesson. Kyle is doing exceptional well in his…”
“I think I over reacted when I learned it was you that brought him across. The second I heard you say ‘I did’ my thoughts went everywhere. You took my only son away from me, he’s not mine son anymore.”
“No, that’s...that is not way, he will always be your son.” Nick held up his hand stop him from going further. “I will never do anything to jeopardize your relationship with Kyle.”
“I know how you work Nick. You’re probably already thinking of a way to use Kyle to your advantage, the way you used Joe.”
“In the end, that failed, you are back together. There is one thing I learned during this experience with Armand.”
“That you can’t control everything.”
Nick smiled at his quick response. “No, I cannot, but that’s not what I learned. It has taught me that even in death, I can’t compete with Joe. I know you didn’t come back for my sake, but for Joe and Kyle.”
“And for the rest of the family…that includes you.”
Nick’s features grew serious. “I would and will do anything for you Rick. Yes, I brought Kyle across…for you. I didn’t think of how it would affect our relationship in the future, there was no time for that. Knowing your hatred for me and everything I stand for. I acted, not for my own selfish needs, but yours. I don’t expect any gratitude or a thank you from anyone. I brought him across for you, nothing more.”
“How can I trust you Nick? When you’ve never given me a reason too.”
”All I can give you is my word, as a gentlemen, to never come between you and Kyle or Joe, ever again.”
“Gentlemen? You really need to get with the right century.”
“Well, my upbringing, no matter the century is a hard habit to break. Besides, there are still gentlemen in world.”
“Just keep your word and about Kyle…and Joe.”
“Cross my heart and hope to….to live forever.”
“Good choice of words.” Sav smiled, pushing back the sheet.
Crystal came bounding in the room. “Hope I’m not interrupting.”
“No, we’re finished.” Nick said as he stood up, then helped Sav up.
“Did you need something?” Sav asked her.
“I should be asking you that.”
“I can manage thanks.” Sav pulled his sweat pants up. “I was going downstairs, but Nick can help me.”
“I was going to ask if you wanted to watch a movie or something. Everyone else has gone out and won’t be back for a while.”
“Sounds good to me.” Sav smiled brightly at her. “How about you Nick, care to join us?”
Nick had been quiet, watching Crystal from the corner of his eye. Her body language and tone of voice told him all he needed to know. “I’ll take a rain check. I need to finish going over the contract and plans for the castle.”
“Booo, we don’t want your boring company anyway.” Sav leaned on his arm for support and Nick slowly led him from the room.
