Justin paced the length of the hallway and back again. He was ready to tear someone apart! Seka stood nearby and watched quietly. She hadn’t told him why she had shown up here at just the right time, but Justin couldn’t bring himself to be angry with her. She’d disposed of someone who should have been killed a long time ago. The police were also at the arena demanding answers as to what was happening. Since the man Seka was with was Interpol and claimed jurisdiction, the Miami police were left to impatiently wait.
Sven was in Serpentina’s dressing room with Tara, as was Shannon, Alina and Eden. Sven had asked that Justin keep everyone else out until he was sure Tara was okay, but there was no keeping Shannon away from his wife. Jeff muttered something darkly off to the side and Justin looked over at him with a mixture of sympathy and amusement. He didn’t like being kept from Eden, but she insisted that she stay with her sister.
“She is fine, Jeff.”
“She almos’ wasn’t!”
“She’s tougha than that,” Matt chimed in with a grin, though Justin could see the worry in his eyes. “Look at who ‘er sista is.”
“Yeah, an SHE almos’ wasn’t eitha!”
Justin bristled slightly at the remark but said nothing. He agreed with Jeff at the moment. Tara was almost killed, and so was Eden. For all of their protection, Sven and Justin had not been there to keep them safe. They’d trusted the two to be okay while they were in public. Perhaps he was getting soft. He should have realized that this Samuel, who was also his former stepfather, Adam Bentley, would be able to get to Eden even more easily at the arena.
“She was never in any danger,” Seka replied flatly.
“Oh, she wasn’?” Jeff shot back. “’Cause tha’ gun ‘e ‘eld onner looked kinda dangerous ta me!”
“I would NEVER put Tara in danger,” Seka growled. “She saved my life! She changed it, too! I owe EVERYTHING I am to her. I wasn’t about to let that sick bastard hurt her again!”
“Wait a minute!” Matt rounded on Justin. “THAT was th’ same guy?”
Justin didn’t try to pretend that he misunderstood. He merely nodded and looked away.
“Didja know?”
“Had I known,” Justin growled dangerously, “he would have been dead much, much sooner. Despite my promise to her.”
“Promise?”
“Let it go, Hardy Boy,” Seka advised.
“Makes no nevamind,” Jeff added. “’E still got ta them.”
“I was there. Tara was safe.”
“I see,” Jeff hissed. “But Eden wasn’ yo’ problem, was she?”
“As far as I knew,” she turned an angry glare on Jeff, “Eden was trying to kill you.”
“Your information is commendable,” Justin threw in grudgingly.
“I knew everything about Tara,” Seka replied, turning to him. “The Warrior Series, Shannon, Todd’s addition to the family. Everything.”
“Yet, you never let on.”
“I’m Interpol,” she shrugged. “I can’t tell anyone what I know.”
“Your English is flawless.”
“Tara started me off with tutoring when I lived with her … before …”
“Yes, before.”
“I continued my studies when I got home.”
“Your parents are happy with your career choice?”
“My parents are rarely happy with anything I do anymore,” she sighed. “I guess you could say I didn’t re-acclimate well when I returned from the States the first time. They thought me too ‘Americanized’ for my own good. They tried to force me back into their model child. Needless to say, it didn’t work out too well.”
“And now your cover is blown.”
“Who cares?” Seka shrugged again. “She was the reason I became a field agent,” she nodded to the closed door. “When the killing pattern started up again, I got suspicious. We were way too careful not to let Adam’s details get out.” She looked Justin dead in the eye. “Weren’t we, Dad?”
He smiled at her sadly. Yes, it would seem he’d collected another child. Tara would be pleased, eventually.
The door opened and Alina and Eden emerged, followed by Sven.
“She is cleaned up,” the Scandinavian man sighed. “But she is not calming down.”
Eden went to Jeff immediately and wrapped his arms around her waist, burying her face in his shoulder.
“Shannon is with her.” Justin stated it with confidence.
“He is at his own wits’ end,” Sven replied. He leaned against the wall next to his lover and across from Seka, regarding her cautiously.
“I’ll take care of it,” she replied and pushed herself away from the wall toward the door.
“Hey, Shan’ll handle it,” Jeff groused.
“When Adam struck the first time, I handled it,” Seka shot back vehemently. “She’s my sister. I’ll handle it again.”
“She’s MY sister!” Eden suddenly spoke up. “I’m the one who should be in there.”
“When I come out, you and I can argue the semantics behind belonging to this family,” Seka patiently told her. “But for now just know that before you and Todd, there was Tara. And there was me. Deal with it.”
Seka turned her back on all of them then and abruptly entered the room.
“That’s one tough bitch,” Alina murmured.
“She has certainly changed,” Sven said to Justin.
“Yes, but I believe it is for the better.”

“Baby, talk ta me,” Shannon whispered as he rocked Tara back and forth. “Please.”
“I can’t,” she sniffled as she tried half-heartedly to pull away from him. “Not now. I need to get out of here!”
“An’ go where?” he demanded, tightening his hold. He knew if she decided to pull any harder, he’d have no hope of holding her. But he couldn’t let go. He had to calm her down.
“Don’t know, don’t care.”
“Baby, please,” he pleaded. “Please.”
The door opened again and an Asian woman walked in. She took in the scene of Tara struggling to get away from her husband and sighed.
“Tara, you can’t keep running away,” she said softly.
At the sound of her voice Tara turned her head and saw her. She immediately stopped struggling and began to cry, collapsing onto Shannon’s shoulder in a boneless mass. He breathed a sigh of relief and held her to him, grateful to Seka. He didn’t know much about her, but from what little he did know she was the one who got Tara to respond after Adam had attacked her way back when. Tara’s sobs intensified and she now clung to Shannon as if her life depended on him. And it did, he realized, though the thought only warmed him.
“You have to let Shannon in,” Seka advised as she seated herself behind him so she could look at Tara. “He’s not going to leave you anyway.”
“But I … don’t deserve him,” Tara choked out. “See what I bring him? See what I attract?”
“What?” Seka challenged. “Do you still believe that bullshit? After everyone you’ve touched and everything you’ve done for them?”
“What did I do?” Tara demanded. “Look what I cause!”
“I only see a family who loves you: a husband who can’t stop holding you; two fathers that blame themselves for not protecting you; a sister, the other one, who feels she’s the reason you were almost killed today; a brother who is right now punching the padded walls of an exercise room to keep from exploding; and another sister, who came back for you.”
“Adam …”
“Is quite dead,” Seka finished in a cold tone. “I can assure you I’m a good shooter. And I aimed especially carefully at him.”
“No more people should die for me,” Tara cried pitifully.
“If they try to hurt you, they’re going to die,” Seka replied. “It’s that simple. I made you no promises, like Justin. I’m not making you one now, either, so forget it.”
“Seka, I can’t let you do that,” Tara sounded tired. Shannon silently listened to the exchange and hugged her tighter. “It’s too much.”
“It’s not.”
“I can take care of myself,” the Russian accent appeared.
“I know,” Seka chuckled. “I’ve seen your matches.”
“Huh?”
“I knew you were Rio from the start. You’ve definitely made them proud.”
Shannon knew she was talking about Justin and Sven. He also knew Tara was still thrown by Seka’s admission.
“You knew?” Tara asked. “The whole time? Even when Henry was after me.”
“Henry wasn’t my focus and I admit he totally slipped through my fingers after the deal went down and he escaped from jail,” Seka said ruefully. “But I was on you the entire time. And make no mistake he would have died before he got within 100 yards of you.”
“But Adam?” Tara asked carefully.
“Adam must have snuck in here before the show started, because I’ve been with you the whole time and I never saw him. Trust me, I was watching for him. I’d already known Eden was his trainee. But since she was with you, my surveillance stayed where it was.”
“’Ow’d ya kno’ Tara needed ya?” Shannon couldn’t help asking.
“I was backstage. When I saw the man follow Eden into Tara’s dressing room, I knew who he was and I moved in. I disobeyed orders, too.”
“Wha’?”
“When I called for backup, my supervisor ordered me to wait before proceeding, even though I explained the imminent danger. I ignored him and proceeded.”
“And saved ‘er life,” Shannon whispered gratefully.
He turned slightly to see Seka’s face. She shrugged again.
“Seka, welcome ta th’ family,” he grinned.
