Chapter 32
When Gerry told Ann later that night that they were going to Amsterdam, Ann was confused and asked how he knew she would want to go there. His response was, “You know, I did pay attention when you and Lynn told all those stories about what you did in high school.” Ann said thank you, smiled and shook her head. Gerry was sure that he heard her mutter something like “I hope you know what you’re getting yourself into,” under her breath.
Ann insisted that they ride the train to Amsterdam, which Gerry wasn’t a fan of, but he let her have some control. All in all, the four and a half trip wasn’t all that bad. The scenery was nice and Ann slept in his lap most of the time which left him four hours to reread the script for his next movie, a comedic action. Finally he found a part where he got to save the girl and not die trying. It had really been Ann that had coerced him into taking the part. “You are funny to me, but I have been reading on a few of your fan sites that they want to see you try comedy,” Ann said a month or so back. Thought Gerry had read through several scripts he liked, he had almost forgotten about them when that thing with Adam happened. It wasn’t until Ann had rescued him from a bottle and Lisa had given him a through tongue lashing that he realized he needed another job. He was lucky to sign on to do a movie that was still a month and a half from shooting, so he had time to beef-up and go on vacation with Ann.
Ann awoke just as they were pulling into the station in Amsterdam. Gerry could hardly contain a laugh at the sight of Ann. She had serious nap hair and her eyes looked quite tired. “We are almost there and then you can go back to bed,” he said helping Ann into the cab. He knew, however, that Lynn and Brendan were waiting for them at their hotel and that Ann would no longer be in a mood to sleep. It was rare that Lynn and Ann spent that much time apart. From what Gerry knew, just Ann’s side, when they went to two different colleges, the separation had been hard on Ann. He knew that Ann missed Lynn even if she didn’t say it. There was just a bit of her spark missing. That is why, despite all of his whining, Gerry wasn’t that upset to share his vacation with Lynn and Brendan. The girls could shop and re-hash old times while he and Brendan could just laugh and wonder what crazy things the girls were going to do next.
Just as he had predicted, as soon as Ann saw Lynn, there was a very high pitched noise and he felt as though he was going deaf. After the squeal subsided, he was greeted with looks of great thanks from Ann, thought he didn’t really know why because he had not much to do with Lynn being here, and a stiff handshake from Brendan.
Even thought, at least now, no one was really that tired, they all made a collective decision to stay in that night and just have a rest. As they tried to decide where to get dinner, they managed to find one of the few places that served what Lynn called “normal food”. It wasn’t that she was picky; she just knew what she liked. But then everyone is like that.
Dinner was quiet, at least from the boys point of view and even Lynn’s. For once in her life Ann was doing all the talking. Ann filled Lynn in on all of the things that had happened. She told her of Gerry adorable niece and the boat ride after seeing Phantom in London. Ann also told Lynn of the Imperial War Museum and that Gerry had bought her a small cottage in the middle of nowhere in Scotland. Lynn put on a smile and listened; though the entire time Ann was speaking she wanted to puke. All this lovey dovey shit was making Lynn sick, but she knew that is was Ann wanted. Lynn loved her relationship with Brendan. They had an understanding that they both loved each other very much; they just didn’t need to say it all the time.
On the way back to their hotel, they passed quite a few bakeries. “Where did Lynn go?” Ann asked when she noticed that she had disappeared.
“Just getting some dessert,” Lynn said as she walked out of one of the bake shops. She gave Ann a wicked smile and Ann instantly knew what it was about. The girls laughed and the four of them continued on. About a block from their hotel they passed a liquor store window.
Ann stopped dead in her tracks and stared at a bottle with brightly colored green liquid in it. “Gerry, I will be right back,” Ann said as she ran inside.
“What’d ya get?” Gerry asked when Ann returned.
“You’ll see. Lynn I can now guarantee that everyone will have an interesting night.”
“If I know what is in that bag, I would say so,” Lynn said with a smile.
When they got back to their hotel, Ann went with Lynn to her room while the boys went up to Ann and Gerry's room. “How did you get put in a closet?” Ann asked when they walked in.
“They didn’t have any suits left when we got here.”
“But don’t they know who you are?” she asked with a laugh.
“Apparently not.”
“Well you are in luck.”
“How is that?”
“The suit they gave me and Gerry as like three bedrooms. It was the only one they had left when he called. So you two can just move up there.”
“But we are only going to be here for like three days.”
“Well you are moving up there and that is that.”
“Well I better do as I am told.”
“You can stay here if you want.”
“Are you crazy? Shit yeah I’m coming up there. Call up Brendan and make the boys move this shit.”
“Good idea.”
After Lynn and Brendan unpacked in their new room, Lynn decided it was time for a brownie. Of course Gerry and Brendan refused one. “How would it look if my fans found out?” they both said.
“Suit your selves,” Ann said as she and Lynn “clinked” brownies. Over the next few hours, things got a little strange. Ann laughed so hard when Gerry said something about needing a new button on his shirt that she started crying. Then some how, Lynn convinced Gerry and Brendan to drink some absinth. The four of them finished the bottle.
“Ann,” Gerry said with a strange look on his face, “are we on a bus?”
“No. Had a bit too much to drink?”
“Well the walls are moving. Or am I moving?” He started to wave his hand in the air. “My hand is following it self. God bless the man who invented that green stuff.”
“How do you know it was a man?” Lynn asked. “A woman is just as capable of creating something as kick ass as absinth.”
“Lynn please you are messing with my buzz,” Brendan said.
“Seriously, Lynn, just enjoy yourself,” Ann said as she slid off the couch to the floor.
“You act as though the feminist movement never happened Ann,” Lynn said with a harsh tone. “Why do you care about nothing?”
“I don’t care about nothing.” Ann paused and Lynn looked as though she wanted an explanation. “I have no emotional attachment to it at all.”
There was a dead silence. Ann had a satisfied smile on her face, but then she looked around. No one got her joke. “You people have no sense of humor.”
Three hours later, Lynn finally got it. All of a sudden she began to laugh. “I get it! You have no emotional attachment to the word.” Both of the boys looked at her and said “Oh I see.”

The next morning, Brendan and Gerry noticed that it was a bit difficult to get the girls up. Finally around 10:30 the smell of fresh coffee was too much for them. As the girls sat in the living room enjoying breakfast, the boys were telling them all the placed they could go. “There is the Ann Frank House,” Gerry said. Everyone seemed to agree that they wanted to go there. Then there was the argument about which art museum they would go to.
“Don’t get me wrong,” Ann said, “I love Van Gogh, but I have wanted to go to the Museum of Modern Art for practically my whole life. That is where I am going.”
“No need to get testy,” Lynn said. “We will take a vote. Who wants to go to the Van Gogh Museum?” Gerry raised his hand. “And who wants to go to the Modern thingy?” Brendan raised his hand.
“I never thought I would say this Lynn,” Ann said as they were about to leave, “but maybe we really have picked the wrong guy.” They both laughed but the truth was that as far as what each of them had in common with the boys, sometimes it made more sense for Ann to be with Brendan and Lynn to be with Gerry. Ann and Brendan had the same taste in movies and Lynn and Gerry had similar taste in art. The only thing that made a switch is their theories on relationships. Ann and Gerry were just to cutesy, something that made both Lynn and Brendan want to puke.
The first part of the afternoon was spent at the Ann Frank House. There was a video at the beginning of the tour that made both Ann and Lynn cry. There was somberness to the conversations between the four of them as the walked through the museum. The thought of people having to hide out in tiny attics and basements to survive the Holocaust and in some cases not survive long enough was heart wrenching to all of them.
They had lunch on a floating restaurant on the edge of one of the many canals. “So after the museums shall we meet in the tulip garden?” Gerry said.
“How did you know that I wanted to go there?” Ann asked.
“Well you only said you liked tulips about a thousand times.”
“True I did.”
While walking through the museum, Brendan and Ann talked about everything. It had been so long since they had time to themselves. After a while Brendan brought up his feelings for Lynn. “Ann I need to ask you something.”
“Okay.”
“You know how I feel about Lynn and you know how she feels about me. So my question is, do you think she would marry me?”
Ann stopped dead in her tracks and stared at him. She was completely and utterly surprised. Ann always thought she would get married first. Brendan looked at Ann waiting for her answer. For a second, Ann thought Brendan could tell what she was thinking. “Of, of course she will,” she answered quickly.
“What’s wrong?”
“Nothing. Why would anything be wrong.”
“Well you look like you are about to cry.”
“Because I am happy that you want to marry Lynn.” A tear ran down her cheek, but it was obvious to Brendan that Ann was upset by the news.
“I know you are happy, but you are sad about something. What is it?”
“Oh nothing.”
“Tell me right now or we will leave without seeing the Pollock.”
“Please don’t tell Lynn or Gerry I said this, but the way she talked about love when we were younger, I always thought that I would be the first to get married.” They were now sitting on a bench and Ann was crying on Brendan’s shoulder. “I just never thought that she would fall in love let alone get married. Please don’t think that I am not happy for both of you.”
“I may not understand where these feelings are coming from, but I suppose I can see where you are coming from.” Brendan held Ann in a hug for a few minuets until she stopped crying.
“You much think that me being upset that she is getting married first a little ridiculous.”
“Do you want the truth?” He paused, looking at Ann to make sure she heard him. “I do, but I know you well enough to know why you feel like that.”
“I know. Thanks for listening.”
Brendan looked at her. Ann tried to smile, but Brendan saw the effort she put behind it. “You’re not telling me something.”
“I just don’t understand…Why hasn’t he asked me? I mean I know he loves me, but…”
“If you know he loves you then why are you worrying? Can I tell you something?”
“Sure.”
“You have to remember that Gerry is a guy and no matter how much he loves you, marriage is a scary thing. It is like that for all men. You just have to give him time. As you said, you know he loves you and I know that he loves you, so don’t worry.”
Ann looked at Brendan for a minuet. At first, she was a little shocked at what he said, but then it occurred to her that he was right. “Thanks for talking some sense into me.”
As they hugged, Brendan said in a funny tone, “What would you do with out me?”
“I would most likely be a big cry baby. Lynn doesn’t let me cry like you do,” Ann said with a smile.
“Now that’s better, you with a smile. I know what would make you smile even more.”
“What is that?”
“Tulips. We are supposed to meet Lynn and Gerry in a little bit.”

At the Van Gogh Museum with Lynn and Gerry…
“Come on, Gerry,” Lynn said as they walked around, “you can't tell me you don’t find it funny that both you and I and Ann and Brendan have a lot on common?”
“Well I guess it is funny. But you don’t find it strange that we seem like opposites?”
“Haven’t you heard the saying ‘Opposites attract?’”
“You have a point.”
“I know I do.”
When they got to Van Gogh’s painting, Gerry was taken aback. “I knew I liked it, but I didn’t know it could be so captivating.” Lynn laughed. “What?”
“Oh it is just I heard Ann say practically the same thing about a Monet in New York.”
“I think this is my favorite that we’ve seen today.”
“It’s Ann’s favorite too.”
“I know. I just wish she could be here to see it.”
A voice came from behind. A cool, unfeeling voice. “Who is Ann?”
