“So, where are you now,” Kelly asked over the phone, sitting back in her bus as True Blood played in the background.
“Oh, we should be in Tulsa in about a couple of hours,” Carrie answered excitedly. “From there, my parents are meeting me and we’re heading home.”
“Aw,” Kelly smiled fondly knowing Carrie was dying to see her family. “I’m glad you get to see them, babe.”
“Me too, but I am kinda nervous,” she admitted as she tossed the magazine she’d been reading prior to Kelly’s call on the bed.
“I’m sure it’ll be fine,” Kelly tried to reassure her as well as herself. “Have you decided if you’re going to tell them,” she asked gently. They had gone back and forth on the best way to tell their parents. Neither one was exactly sure how to go about it, but they knew that they would be running out time in a matter of weeks.
“Well,” Carrie sighed. “I honestly don’t know. I mean, they always quiz me about if I’m seeing anyone and stuff when I’m home. I’ve decided that if they do, I’m gonna be honest about it.”
“Oh,” Kelly nodded. “Ok,” she was slightly caught by surprise. “I think that’s fair.”
“Thanks,” Carrie chuckled. “I really hate that you can’t come to Oklahoma this break.”
“I know, babe,” Kelly pouted. “I wish I could be there too, but I’ve gotta do this award thing for Reba in Nashville. Seriously, the woman wins awards left and right. Honoring her may become a full time job soon.”
Carrie giggled, loving Kelly’s sense of humor. “I know. Such is the price of working with a legend, huh,” she teased.
“I guess so. No, but really, I love Reba…even if she’s keeping me from you a bit longer.”
“Speaking of,” Carrie gently pressed.
“Oh, yeah,” Kelly laughed knowing full well where Carrie was going. “Well, we had quite the chat last night. I asked her to come on my bus for a game or cards and some wine.”
“Yeah,” Carrie nodded, as she lifted Ace up on her bed. He immediately crawled on her lap, waiting on her to pet him.
“Yeah. After the game, she started asking about what I had planned for the next while, you know, after the tour…and I told her.” She heard Carrie gasp over the phone. “So yeah,” she giggled.
“Um,” Carrie stammered. “What did she say?”
“Well, at first, she was floored and started laughing hysterically asking me if she was on that Ashton Kutcher show. I had to bite my lip because she was cracking me up. But when I turned serious, she stopped laughing.”
“Oh uh,” Carrie whispered.
“No, actually. I was open with her and laid it all out, so to speak. She was actually very surprising and told me that she was glad, that she’d seen how much happier I’ve been lately and she knew something was up.”
“So, she knows it’s me,” Carrie asked completely taken aback that Reba McEntire was that cool.
“Well, yes, silly,” Kelly teased. “No, I’m gonna go and tell her I’m dating Britney.”
“Ew,” Carrie groaned. “Seriously, what is it with you and that girl?”
Kelly laughed openly. “Care, I was kidding. And really, I only have eyes for you.”
“Ok good,” the blonde interjected. “ But no sappyness over the phone.”
“Sorry.”
“So, she’s cool that it’s me?”
“Awww,” Kelly melted. “That’s what this really is about, huh? You wanna know if Reba approves of you?”
“Well,” Carrie got a bit shy. She knew that Reba meant a lot to Kelly, almost like a surrogate mom, at least on the road. “Kinda.”
Kelly growled frustrated. “Why must you be so damn cute when I can’t, like, attack you with hugs or make out with you?”
Carrie giggled. “Save it for later?”
“Oh, yes, most definitely.”
“Good.”
“And for the record, Reba totally approves. She teased me about scoring myself the hottest babe in music.”
Carrie was thankful Kelly couldn’t see her deep blush. “Yeah,” she laughed. “Reba said that.” Her tone conveying that she didn’t buy it at all. “You sure that wasn’t you?”
“Ok,” Kelly conceded. “Fine. She didn’t quite put it like that, but she did say that you’re a really sweet girl and that she was happy for me. Better?”
“Yes.”
“Care,” Kelly noticed Jason walking towards her. “Listen, Jay’s here and I think we need to review some scheduling stuff about the award show and I don’t even remember what else. Call me later when you can? I don’t want to interrupt family time.”
“I will,” she smiled. “Tell him hi for me. I’m expecting a Guitar Hero rematch.”
Kelly laughed. “I’ll let him know. Oh, and tell Steph I said hi and hope to see her again soon.”
“Ok. I love you.”
“Love you too,” Kelly smiled as Jason made a gagging face.
“Bye.”
“Bye,” she whispered hanging the phone. “Jay,” she swatted his arm.
“Sorry,” he shrugged. “It’s weird seeing you this mushy,” he sat next to his sister.
“Whatever.”
“Hey,” he whined. “Be nice to me. Do you know how many strings I had to pull for your little surprise?”
“Ok, ok,” she apologized immediately. “But you know,” she batted her eyelashes. “You’re my favorite brother!”
He rolled his eyes. “I’m your only brother.”
She smiled brightly at him. “So, we’re good?”
“Yes, it’s a go in a few.”
“Score!” She bounced excitedly in front of the couch. “Wanna watch TV,” she pointed to the screen.
“Sure. So where is this one?”
“Oh,” Kelly reached for the remote. “I think Tara was getting fired…again.”

Carrie bundled excitedly out of her bus as she saw her parents waiting by their car. “Mom!”
“Hi sweetie,” Carole smiled, giving her a huge hug. Carrie sighed wrapped up in her mom’s hug. No matter how old she got, that was always her favorite part about getting to see them.
“Ahem,” Stephen cleared his throat.
Carrie pulled away from her mom. “Hi Daddy,” she chuckled against his chest.
“Hi Care Bear,” he smiled fondly. “It’s good to see you.”
“Y’all too,” Carrie sighed as she wrapped her arm around her dad’s waist. “It’s great to be home.”
“Oh. I’ve got to get Ace and my bags,” she motioned towards the bus.
“Nonsense,” Stephen argued. “I’ll get them.”
Carrie frowned. “Dad, I really can get my own luggage.”
Carole smiled. “Let him,” she pulled Carrie aside. “Makes him feel useful.”
Stephen stepped away from them, as Carole wrapped an arm around Carrie’s shoulder. “Let me look at you,” she pulled back. “Sweetie, you look great.”
“Thanks, Mom,” Carrie nodded, with a slight blush.
“It’s like you’re almost glowing….oh,” Carole’s eyes grew wide.
“Uh-uh,” Carrie vehemently shook her head. “No,” she laughed. “I’m not pregnant before you even joke about that!”
“How did you…” Carole laughed.
“Because,” Carrie rolled her eyes. “It’s what you always ask. And I’d like to think that you raised me better than that.”
Carole laughed. Not very many mothers and daughters joked about something like that, but she knew that Carrie was right. She would be extremely surprised if something like that happened.
“We did,” Stephen broke in with the bags and leash in one hand. “Here,” he handed the leash before Ace got tangled in his feet.
“Thanks, Daddy,” Carrie smiled, bending down to pick up the terrier. “So, can we head home?”
“Of course,” he guided them to the car as he loaded her bags in the trunk.

After dinner, Carrie sat on the couch with her parents. Carole was knitting a scarf and Stephen working on crossword puzzle.
Carrie had been trying to figure out when the right time to tell her family would be. As the hours passed, it became harder and harder for her to not just blurt it out. The nerves where killing her and she figured that once it was out in the open, she’d feel better. Though, there was a smaller part of her completely thinking that maybe she shouldn’t tell them at all. As she was thinking of keeping the news quiet, she got a text from Kelly. “Hope U R ok. I’m here. ILY. KC.” She smiled completely amazed at Kelly could’ve known that she’d needed that reassurance. The girl just never ceased to amaze her.
“So…” Carrie began nervously.
Carole glanced at her daughter. From the look on her face, she could tell she had something important in mind. “Hmm?”
“Mom, Dad…” she took a calming breath. “I’ve got something I want to share with you,” she tried her best to keep her nerves at bay and her voice from breaking.
“What’s going on,” Stephen put his paper down.
“Well, I-I wanted to share why I’m glowing, like mom said,” she got up off the couch and walked in front of the coffee table to face them. It was quite the role reversal from when she was growing up and getting the speech about something from her parent.
“Ok,” Carole smiled gently.
“Well,” she fidgeted, signaling to both Carole and Stephen that she had something serious to say. “I met someone.”
“Oh,” Stephen nodded. “Not another athlete, I hope?”
Carrie chuckled. “Nope. Definitely not,” she smiled briefly.
“Ok, so…” Carole asked excitedly. “What does he do?”
Carrie sighed. “Oh, musician. Singer, actually…and songwriter.”
“Oh, is he famous,” Carole nodded in approval. “Did you meet him in Nashville?”
“Yes,” Carrie began. “I did, but see…the thing is….” She looked down at the floor, not sure how to exactly phrase it.
Suddenly, she felt Stephen’s arms around her. “What,” she asked surprised.
He looked down at her with a smile. “We know,” he put it simply.
Her emotions finally got the better of her and she started crying. “But,” she managed through her tears. “How?”
“Well,” Carole stood up taking Carrie’s hand and guiding her back to the couch to sit in between them. “You see, your sister…”
Carries eyes narrowed. “She had no right to,” she began to protest.
“Hold on,” Stephen tried to calm her down. “Your sister was having a bit of a hard time processing this all. She came to us to talk hypothetically about a friend who was going through this situation. From the way she was talking, we eventually got it out of her.”
“But,” Carrie sat there stunned. “Why didn’t you call me or ask or something?”
“Honey,” Carole shook her head. “Because we knew that you would tell us when you were ready.”
“We love you, Care Bear,” Stephen pulled her against his chest. “We raised you to be a good daughter and to know that you can come to us with anything. We were just waiting for you.”
All Carrie could do was cry on her father’s shoulder, completely amazed and feeling extremely lucky to have such loving parents.
“You know,” Carole rubbed her back soothingly. “I would’ve thought you’d be relieved.”
“I am,” she sniffed, facing her mom. “I’m so lucky,” she shifted to hug her mom. “Thank you,” she whispered.
“Don’t thank us,” Stephen nodded as the door opened.
“Hey,” Stephanie walked into the room. “What’s going on,” she asked concerned as Carrie wiped away her tears.
“Nothing,” she stood up to hug her sister. “I don’t know what you told them, but thank you.”
“Aw,” Stephanie gently rubbed her arm. “It was nothing.”
“So,” Carrie managed to focus. “Why are you here? I mean, I thought I wasn’t supposed to see you until tomorrow.”
“Oh,” Stephanie turned to the doorway. “I had something to deliver. Couldn’t wait til morning.”
Kelly poked her head into the room, before bouncing in. “Surprise!”
